Joshua Weil is torn out by the roots when his mom goes off to medical school and his dad takes him to live in a rural commune. After being home-schooled for several years and spending most of his time with adults and older teens, Josh thinks of himself as almost a man when he turns thirteen. But the older girl he's in love with sees him only as a bright boy who can help her with her homework. The challenges he faces make a man of him, but not in the way he expects.
