FBI profiler Jeff Crandall returned to Fiddler, Idaho, to work on new Bureau protocols in peace…and because he hasn't been able to stop thinking about Abby Quinn. Kind, beautiful and quietly sexy, the petite rancher next door is loved by the entire town but keeps fiercely to herself. She's a mystery that doesn't want to be solved, though he's desperate to try.Whether that interest is professional or personal is a question he'll sort out later.Abby knows sharing her secrets would bring death and destruction to Fiddler. She survived her childhood, barely, but a long list of stepfathers weren't nearly so their bodies are buried across the country, waiting to be discovered. The best protection is silence, anonymity and isolation, though the handsome agent next door seems hell-bent on destroying all three. And he just keeps kissing her…When Jeff is called in to investigate an interstate serial killer case spanning two decades, Abby knows it's only a matter of time before he connects the dots, sees her for who she really is and walks away. But it's when he's standing in the crosshairs of Abby's past that Jeff faces his biggest challenge how to give the woman he loves the life she doesn't believe she deserves.Book two of Agents UndercoverThis book is approximately 90,000 words

ARC provided by the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jeff is an FBI Agent looking for some peace and quiet in order to complete a project for the FBI. He rents the ranch next to Abby and is drawn to her love for abused animals and the air of mystery she surrounds herself with. He is drawn into her life and when the FBI need him to assist on a serial killer case over 20 years old, he has no idea that Abby is connected.

Abby has made a life in Fiddler, Idaho caring for horses that have be badly abused. Her love for these animals that others have misused and abandoned comes from experience. She lives in constant fear that her past is going to return and this time she won't be able to escape. She desperately wants to trust Jeff, but people Abby trusts tend to end up dead.

Reading out of order in a series is a chance you take. Sometimes the series is written in a way that each book can be read as a standalone and other series, like this one, are much better read in order. I really hate feeling like a fish out of order when the author makes references to the characters and plot of the previous book. Even the H/h of this book, Jeff and Abby, meet and interacted in the previous book. With that said, this is a very good romantic-suspense plot and Jeff and Abby are a couple you really want to see get their HEA. 3 1/2 Stars

**I received this book from Book Enthusiast Promotions in exchange for an honest review**

You know that book where you enjoy the characters, the plot is solid, but it sorta rings familiar? You've read that book, haven't you? Well, THIS. IS. NOT. THAT. BOOK!

I picked up Hard Silence from Book Enthusiast for two reasons. One, I have a manuscript with Carina Press, so I considered the fact that it would be good to read something from the publisher. [ha! don't judge me] But, I've been looking for something romantic suspense--desperately looking to add to my Must-Have-It author list.

And from the first line: Body Found In Well. No, not that one... go back even more. To my mother. This book is not about her... Yes! That one! :D What a great start to a story about family, secrets, lies, and healing.

I think I really like Mia Kay! Her sense of humor must be a boon to her entire family.

But, back to the book.

The characters. I have never met the heroine, Abby Quinn, before Hard Silence. She was flawed, weak, determined, strong, beautiful... How can a person be weak and strong? Read the book and find out. Her smarts often inhibited her heart, and I loved seeing her overcome that. The thing I loved about Jeff was that he was a gorgeous [of course], slightly world-weary, laidback guy. He didn't kill me with an Alpha personality [although, every man has alpha tendencies, and you never want to miss them, especially when their protective instincts are awoken]. Mostly, I loved seeing him wake up [literally], step out onto his front porch in his jeans, his scruffy, messed up head of hair, and his bare feet with a mug of coffee in his hand.

The plot. The twists and turns in this story kept me reading this book to the end... like 0100 and finally, I was able to toss my phone to the nightstand, close my eyes, and drop into a happy sleep. Serial killers, revenge,...and secrets. I can't say more. You must get the book and see what I am talking about.

You will love the town of Fiddler, the people who took Abby in and brought life to her messed up, sad, sad world.

This book made me happy inside. I know if I took more time, I could probably think of something to critique, something that I would have done differently...but why? I was, am, and always will be, first, a reader. And I loved this book. I will definitely be going back to buy the first book. And I will buy any more of her books that come out, as well. Thank you Mia, for giving life to a great story.

Wow! This is a phenomenal book that I couldn't put down. It had me turning pages just as fast as possible. This is a tightly crafted romantic suspense that follows Abby, a lone women with dark secrets. She is quietly going about her life surrounded by the animals she loves when an FBI profiler (Jeff) moves next door to take time off to write his protocols for the FBI.

Jeff is intrigued by Abby and is desperate to get to know her and her secrets - almost as desperate as Abby is to keep those secrets. But sometimes monsters are real and can climb out of the shadows for all to see....

What follows is a deeply engrossing book that I'm sure will continue to haunt me. This was written by an author new to me, but I have added her to my must read authors' list.

Part of Agents Undercover series, in which FBI profiler Jeff Crandall is chasing a mystery while writing new Bureau protocols and procedures. The mystery starts out simple: a murder decades old becomes complicated by others and Jeff suspects a serial killer.

Next door to his temporary digs lives Abby Quinn, with secrets of her own, so many that she rarely speaks, though her artistic photography speaks for her. But what she can't say with words is that she knows the victims AND the murderer. She rears that person may come after her, particularly when she continues to send letters to the cops about those murders. WHY do they keep ignoring what she's trying to tell them in letter after letter?

A thrilling end to a story filled with intriguing characters whose realistic reactions to bad stuff and good will keep you up at night and wanting still more when you finally reach the last page of the tale.

If you think YOUR mother was bad, just pick up HARD SILENCE…then call your mama and tell her how awesome she is!!!

Dr. Jeff Crandall takes perverse pleasure in raising Abby Quinn's hackles. An FBI agent staying in town for a writing sabbatical, Jeff is immensely intrigued by his neighbor's selective mutism, and why the woman is such a mystery to him. Abby CAN talk, she just has a hard time speaking to people she doesn't know well...or people in general really. All she wants is to live her uncomplicated life in peace, but then Jeff comes in and complicates it all over again. And when he's asked to take a look at a serial murderer case, Jeff has no idea just how close he is to sleeping with the enemy.

HARD SILENCE is the second book in the Agents Undercover series, and I enjoyed this one much MUCH more than the first. Abby is such a complicated character; she grew up with an abusive black widow mother, whom she watched murder every one of her husbands, however her heart is pure and she even works with abused animals to help rehab them. She's writing anonymous letters to the FBI detailing the whereabouts of the remains of her mother's prey, is an accomplished photographer and website designer yet can barely string a sentence together around people unless she's totally comfortable. Jeff is also a complicated guy; he's a forensic scientist working for the FBI with a couple of degrees under his belt. He thinks Abby is the weirdest woman he's ever met, but he wants her nonetheless. The two had a strangely potent chemistry between them, and I found myself really diggin' their back and forth. The characters all had a terrific depth that kept me wanting more.

The suspense elements are well thought out and well written too, and I enjoyed the edge of my seat feeling that this story evoked. There wasn't much sex, and what was there was sweet and loving instead of swingin' from the chandelier, but it fit nicely with the overall tone of this book. I'm looking forward to more in this romantic suspense series.

Bottom Line: This wild ride with a monstrous mommy dearest will leave your jaw on the floor (when it's not clinching your teeth together in a myriad of emotions). Enjoy! - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...

Rich characters and a compelling plot make Hard Silence a must-read for fans of romantic suspense!

Main characters Jeff and Abby will take readers on a wild, yet tender, ride. Although I didn’t remember either of them from Soft Target (it’d been a while since I read it), the duo rose to the challenge of being the manuscript’s front and center. Weeks since reading, and their story still resonates with me.

As much as I liked Jeff, Abby’s storyline is the real feature here. Daughter of a toxic mother, Abby suffers ongoing recriminations due to events beyond her control. Fear and guilt affect her ability to form new, trusting, and lasting relationships—an element of her character that made perfect sense to me considering her back story. As one with a soft spot for shelter animals, Abby’s fondness for rehabbing neglected pets won me over fairly early on. She’s a likable, selfless, and hard-working heroine.

Jeff is steady, considerate, and curious—the latter a valuable quality in his job as an FBI profiler. Nevertheless, his interest in temporary neighbor Abby goes beyond mere professional curiosity.

And when the personal and professional overlap? Well, that’s where action and emotion ramp up!

Miscellaneous:
• The flickers of jealousy between the two MCs were fun for me. Even though there’s some serious stuff going on, these flashes of insecurity revealed their emotional vulnerability.
• I loved reading and learning about the villain. Hadn’t read anything quite like that before.
• Although Gray and Maggie, protagonists from Soft Target, made brief cameos in this installment of Agents Undercover, as secondary characters they didn’t overpower the narrative (which is one of my pet peeves in series with interconnected characters).

Verdict:
Loved it! Fresh elements and relatable, likable characters made Hard Silence a page-turner for me. For readers who like a side of sweet with their suspense, Mia Kay’s latest deserves a spot on your TBR.

This book was a struggle for me. I understand the slow build up giving the readers a great understanding of each of the characters and why they do what they do. However this book was just a little to wordy for me and for a character who didn't talk lot she sure had a lot to say in her head. The book reminded me of a light windy day you can feel the wind but it doesn't do much but give you a taste of cool. Than all of a sudden a big gust of wind and it gone. No more wind nothing.
This book is that gives you small moments of mystery and questioning and than BAM its over. Writing style was great she knew where the story was going and how she wanted the reader to get there is just was to wordy.
Abby Quinn is very damaged and the author has you feel her pain and struggle to find peace in her life. Jeff Crandall was just your traditional Alpha male and he stood out just enough. She wrote a couple of really good lines for him but again just traditional. I didn't read the first book and felt a little lost on all the different friends that came in and out of the story.

Mai Kay knows where her story is going from beginning and finish and she is taking you on her story. However the personal monologues caused the story to drag along.

What a unique and fabulous story! I'm not a huge fan of romantic suspense but I like to shake it up sometimes and this story was perfect. I was fascinated by Abby's character - the daughter of a serial killer. So of course her love interest ended up being an FBI profiler! Jeff was a wonderful hero - a bit older with gray round the edges. He was a yummy mix of alpha male but with a soft side to him. The story of Abby's past unfolds slowly and you just know the s#@t's going to hit the fan...and then it does! I love it when the heroine / hero face their fears head on and defeat their own demons. And although I was really pissed at Jeff for a while, I could at least understand where his head was and could forgive him for being a dummy. Men! But the HEA was well worth waiting for. My only complaint is that I would've love to have another chapter or epilogue to share more in their togetherness. Hard Silence is well worth the read and will have your heart aching.

Hard Silence by Mia Kay is an exhilarating read! She creates realistic characters and pulse pounding drama.

Jeff Crandall is a serial dater who catches serial killers for a living. Abby Quinn is a woman with dark secrets and the last thing she needs is an FBI Profiler poking in her business, but she can’t resist her attraction to him.

Jeff and Abby and their story will stick with you long after you’ve finished reading.

Hard Silence is the second book in the Agents Undercover series but also a stand-alone story. I enjoyed the first book, Soft Target, but I totally devoured this one. I only hope there will be more to come. I look forward to spending more time in Fiddler, Idaho!

Hard to put down romantic suspense

Abby Quinn is a complicated woman with so many contradictions, but Jeff Crandall is attracted to her and cannot help himself from profiling her as he would one of his subjects. What will happen when he begins to suspect her of terrible crimes? Will Abby learn to trust in anyone besides herself? The author did a good job of maintaining the suspense in this story.

I was given an ARC of Hard Silence from NetGalley for an honest review and this is my review.
I really could not get into this book as much as I wanted too. The pace was way too slow for me and I could not get into the style she was writing in either.
I just did not like the book that well and it was only okay so I am giving it three out of five stars.

I did not read the first book in this series and while this book can be read as a standalone, I think reading the first book would have added to my knowledge of many of the characters in this book. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and do not believe that not reading the first book in this series lessened by experience at all.

Jeff has returned to the small town of Fiddler to work on training material for the FBI. When he runs into his shy, beautiful neighbor he is immediately attracted to her. He finds himself wanting to get to know her further, wanting to help her and wanting to learn what secrets she is hiding.

And secrets she has....although it's pretty obvious from the middle of the book what those secrets are they are still shocking when they come out. Abby keeps to herself, trusting only a handful of people and never really lets herself get close to anyone. She does all this to not protect herself, but to protect everyone around her. The last thing she wants or needs to have attention drawn to her or the people around her.

Jeff is determined to get to know Abby despite her efforts to push him away. While there were plenty of times that I wanted to scream at Abby and beg her to trust Jeff, given the secrets she was hiding it was easy to see why she couldn't trust him. Her world is turned upside down when the secrets she has been keeping for far too many years end up right in front of her and threaten every person she loves and trusts.

An incredible book that keeps you interested from the beginning. A few technical issues prevented me from giving this story 5 stars: why didn't Abby change her name if she was so afraid of being found? In reality, Jeff's opinion on Abby fostering the child would never have been considered since he wasn't involved in the case on a professional level. Everyone knows where Abby lives but no one asks how she ended up there or why she was able to live on someone else's property? The owner has been missing for far too many years and Abby just gets to stay there rent free?

Despite my technical issues, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author.

Wow. I'm not sure what else to say about the book. It had adventure, intrigue, and mystery.

Abby had a tough life growing up. She's what I call a selective mute. She can speak to others. She just doesn't feel comfortable doing so. She just wants to live in peace. Too bad Jeff Crandall returns to Idaho and complicates her life.

FBI profiler Jeff Crandall returns to Fiddler, Idaho so he can work on new FBI protocols in peace. He's intrigued by his quiet neighbor. He's asked to look at a case, but he has no idea it involves the girl he wants so badly. He thinks Abby is weird, but she intrigues him.

What I liked about the book: The adventure, mystery. It kept me guessing. I couldn't put it down! I kept wondering how Jeff would find out the truth. How much did Abby know? It starts out with Abby's stepfather being found in a well for god sakes! That alone makes it a page turner. Jeff complicates Abby's life. She's not ready for the ride Jeff takes her on, but once the truth comes out will they stay together or tear them apart?

Being an FBI profiler makes Jeff complicated. I mean come on! Who would've thought he'd look into a case involving the weird girl he wants? Yes, the case Jeff is looking into has a mother who doubles as a murderer. So, can they get through it together?

The book is well thought out, and well-written. I now want to go back and read the first book just to see if Abby or Jeff are in it. Are they? I sure hope so.

What I didn't like about the book: Books written in the third person aren't my favorite, but this one is an exception. The plotline is sort slow in the beginning, but when you're about 50 percent through it, it picks up fast.

Dark, Deep and Dangerous though also Delightful – this novel would not let me go. There were twists and turns, deceptions and delights, wonderful characters and evil ones. The plot was strong and moved along seamlessly. It must have been difficult writing a story with the main character so at a loss for words most of the time.

Abby had a horrid childhood and it left her damaged but not daunted. She is productive, earns her way and takes care of the abuse whether human or animal. Not having read the previous book in the series I am guessing the Jeff, FBI profiler, met Abby in book one and was intrigued. He may have wanted to figure her out at first but she ended up being more than a puzzle to him.

There is evil to overcome, pain to be experienced, saving to be done, creativity to share and a relationship to build. I enjoyed watching this story build as Jeff and Abby got to know one another better. I liked the fact that Abby was not a mouse even if she was often quiet as one is supposed to be. They say communication is the key to good relationships but when communication is nearly impossible it takes more than speaking to make sure everything is understood.

I really liked this book and want to thank NetGalley and Carina Press for the Copy to read and review.

When you open this book, you'd better plan on staying up all night because you won't be able to put it down. This isn't a fresh take on a common story. This is a plot and characters you haven't read - or watched - before. This is Mia Kay's third book, and it is the one that will put her in your "must read" pile. I won't talk about the plot since others already have shared pieces, and I don't want to spoil the thrill of the ride Mia has created.

Instead, let's talk about the characters. I have to be honest. Jeff Crandall has jumped to the top of my favorite hero list. Intelligent, funny, sexy, strong - think Anson Mount mixed with a splash of Robert Downey Jr. Absolutely drool worthy. And best of all, he lives next door. (from the descriptions in the book he doesn't look like the cover guy - he's so much hotter!) He's alpha in all the right ways.

The heroine, Abby, has been well-crafted to hold her own with him and makes both character arcs believable. She's beautifully damaged yet a strong and hopeful survivor with moments that will make you want to stand up and cheer.

And the sex scenes - you'll never look at ice cream or sriracha the same way again.

Buy it. Read it. Love it. And then join the rest of us impatiently awaiting her next one!

I LOVE THIS BOOK! Now that I have that out of my system, I’ll tell you why. Hard Silence is Mia Kay’s third book and she has definitely hit her stride. Our hero Jeff, a big-city FBI profiler, is buffaloed by his attraction to Abby. Our heroine -- who just happens to be a photographer, owner of a thriving web design business and rehabilitator of abused animals -- fiercely shoves away everyone who tries to show her any love. What Jeff and everyone in my new favorite town of Fiddler, Idaho, don’t understand is that caring for Abby could be fatal. Jeff and Abby are well-developed characters who have a lot of sizzle (I will never look at an ice cream sundae the same way again!), but what makes this book a standout is that the love story between the two main characters is not what brings them together -- an emotionally wounded little boy shows them both what true love can do. And did I mention there’s a serial killer? Good story, good suspense, and an ending that … well, you just need to read it for yourself.

"Nothing ever happens in a small town" certainly doesn't apply to Fiddler, Idaho, the setting for Hard Silence. Mia Kay writes with authenticity about the inhabitants of Fiddler; creating characters that make the reader yearn for small town life. Once Kay has you lulled into her charming world, BAM! She hits you with a damaged heroine, a rugged hunk, and a serial killer.

I'm looking forward to the next book!
