Shadowstorm

Rate this book
In the sixth novel of Dianne Sylvan’s Shadow World series, vampire Queen Miranda Grey’s immortal family is on the verge of breaking. She and her husband David now rule most of the United States since their mysterious new enemy, the Order of the Morningstar, began assassinating the leaders of the vampire world. Her best friend Deven is a broken ghost of who he once was after a loss that should have taken his life. And Nico, the creature who left his entire world behind to help them, is losing his immense arsenal of magical power – and his will to live - inch by inch.

But now, in the midst of a national tour to support her recent album, the situation goes from bad to worse: Miranda’s darkest secret is about to cause her two worlds to collide. When Morningstar moves more of its pieces into place and nearly destroys one of her own, the only choice Miranda and her family have is a gambit so audacious it could change the entire game…but will the fallout be a blessing, a curse, or something made of both?

There's just something about these characters that keeps me reading this series although I must admit that I was definitely tested this time.

It's been two years since what happened in the last book and Deven is still depressed as hell. He has withheld all affection from Nico who is literally on his last leg. Everyone is trying to help him and Stella is the one that actually performs a spell tying Nico to David...yes, David.

But things can never be that easy...not for this group and unfortunately, it's Nico's turn to go through hell and back. Which leads us to a very Laurell K. Hamilton-esque scenario but mainly, let's put it this way...What David wants, David gets!

And again, things don't end there...it's someone else's turn next and there's all kinds of twists, ending with that crazy epilogue! Who knows what Dianne Sylvan has in store for us next! Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long to find out.

I tried. I really did. But I could not do it. I couldn't finish it.

I must warn you that my rant contains spoilers. Not anything big because I didn't get very far but the object of my rage may be considered a spoiler. Read at your own peril.

Oh, and the cover is awful. Like, what is that?!

Shadowstorm is the sixth book in the controversial Shadow World series and the first to be self published. The journey that the author has decided to take her characters on hasn't been every reader's cup of tea which is a shame because the world building and writing is solid. The premise here continues on from the previous story line David Solomon and his Consort Miranda Grey-Solomon must battle the fanatical Morningstar whilst trying to complete the circle of eight to bring back the power of the Goddess and ensure harmony and peace in the Shadow World. And as usual there is the question of monogamy between the bonded pairs which is a deal breaker for many readers.

So really if you have enjoyed the series in the past you won't be disappointed it is a very readable paranormal series but if the fluid sexuality of the characters is an issue.. don't bother.

This was a different book to book 5. A quieter book but after the events of the last book, not surprising.

The book was slow at first but I liked that, even with the time jump, Deven was still grieving. It re-enforced the depth of the loss of his soul mate. I hate it when authors move the story on time wise so they can skip things like this and have the character "bounce" back.

Once Deven got his "groove" back though, the story picked up for me. I love Deven. He is a character that I disliked in book 2 but now, has really grown on me over the course of the series.

The one thing I wasn't too keen on was the change in relationships. Deven, I expected but Nico - hmm. My fear was it was going to go all "Anita Blake" on me - another series I used to love but ... I think I'll be able to bear it if it just stays the four of them.

Ugh! I am so disappointed in the direction this series seems to be going.
1. Why skip two years between books 5 & 6? There doesn't seem to be any reason for this, and we are missing a ton of seemingly relevant plot lines because of it. It doesn't make sense that the entire world has been put on hold for two years. We end book 5 with Morningstar killing primes left and right and the Circle has the Codex which is supposed to help them figure out how to stop them. We open on book 6, two years later, and nothing of any significance has happened in that battle? They haven't made any progress with the Codex and Morningstar has just stopped fighting (even though they had the Circle on the run after what happened in California)? It doesn't make sense.
2. I'm still mad about what happened to Jonathan, and I hate what Deven's character has become.
3. Since when do David & Miranda have an open marriage? The Deven thing makes some sense- both Miranda and David have a close connection with him - but now all of a sudden both of them are ok with a completely open arrangement and they are both free to pursue affairs with anyone? Seems like a ridiculous stretch to me.
4. David is a main character - if he has fallen in love with Nico, shouldn't that have been part of the overall storyline? Shouldn't we have seen that? It seems to come out of nowhere and it doesn't make sense in the overall scheme of things.
5. What about Stella? We ended book 5 with Nico and Stella beginning to see sparks...we start book 6 with Nico and Stella sleeping together (but no longer having sex because Nico is "too weak"). Then all of a sudden, Nico jumps into bed with David (and then Miranda and Deven) and seems to drop Stella out of the equation entirely. WTF?
6. It really irritates me when writers use magic as a means to force characters to have sex with each other - Deven & David had a great connection from the start, there was no need for the magical imperative and its kind of insulting to the reader.
7. Why introduced Deven's grandmother if your just going to kill her five pages later? There doesn't seem to be any reason at all for this. Nothing is gained, it doesn't progress the story, it's just cruel.
8. The overall storyline doesn't progress much in this book. The only purpose of this entire book seems to be to push the two pairs into a ménage à quatre. They still haven't figured out the Codex and the only advancement we have in understanding Morningstar is what happens to Kai...and that ends on a cliffhanger (something I absolutely hate).

Dafuq happened to this series? It used to be kickass and now it's everyone having sex with each other. WTF. And fuck David. Couldn't stand him as the Hero after he cheated.

Oh that was good, that was really good. the story has several main characters with their own back stories so it's very detialed. Last time I reread the previous books just so I could catch up. This time, I just reread the last chapter of the previous book so I could get a reminder of where the story was. We had a decent ending no cliff hanger but with a good set up for the next book. Persephone, the first born, Persephone's warriors and perhaps we will see the end of the evil prophet or just a story arc that will lead to the end of the evil prophet. Either way it's all good.
There is a story thread in here that leads to an interesting if unanswerable moral discussion. As third born, they are forced kill a human being at least once a month to survive. At first I didn't like the justification that at least they try to pick low lifes to kill really bad criminals, pedophiles or the ilk... but that's explained more in depth in the story line and I like that.
But you gotta think even though we're not all out there sucking people dry of the blood to live like the vampire heroes in this book- we do all kill to survive- with the exception of milk and honey- I don't know maybe unfertilezed eggs... even fruit doesn't count becuase the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees as the saying goes. But you gotta wonder at the nature of the god that makes it necessary to consume another life force to maintain our own- and even you vegans out there are killing something- carrots used to be alive. We make differentiations in life force- Hey! I'm not a carrot. I'm a red blooded highly intelligent mamal.... It's different! Red meat and carrots are not the same but both contain a life force and I wonder if the creator of the life force sees so much of the difference we see. What's the difference between eating a cow or eating a horse I've always wondered. Today, I wonder why do we have to eat to live? Who's bright idea was that?

Two years between books made it difficult to remember where things left off. But, I eventually remembered the heartache we'd been left with at the end of SHADOWBOUND. While this installment wasn't my favorite, not by far, I was happy to have the chance to reconnect with these characters and find out how they were healing - or not. I'm hopeful, based on the final sentence, there's at least one more installment coming. I hope that comes sooner than 2018.

This is really a 3.5-star rating. I did like it, loved parts of it even, but it's sort of a middle book. I can see it's needed to get to the end of the total story arch but it does lack something the other books had. Might be the lack of an editor, might be something else.

I like the main storyline of this series with the Circle forming to battle against Morningstar, the connection with the elves and the Order of Elysium, but the relationship part of the book is an unnecessary mess. First off, there’s way too much of it. It’s out of balance with the real story.

I wish David would get his heart sorted out. He seems to be attracted to everyone he meets. He’s like a child with no control or discipline. If he can’t control his heart then what about his ability to control other things in his life. He’s a leader. He needs to act like an adult and decide what he wants and stick to it. It all makes me wonder if he really loves Miranda. Yes, you can love others, but loyalty and commitment are important.

Miranda seemed to have her head on straight at first and I feel sorry for her. To see her husband falling for everybody he sees has to be hard on her heart even if she says she’s okay. I know they agreed on extracurricular rules but he’s a bit too abundant with his choices. Seems like she wants a circle of friends while he wants an orgy. But then like Kai said ‘She’s not obliged to keep up with her husband’, though it looks like she might.

Since it doesn’t seem like we'll get much of the main story! I’m glad there’s only one book left. It's getting too weird.

Footnote: 1) the same thing happened with the Anita Blake series. At first it was great, then it got too involved with the sexual relationship combinations and the series lost most of its fans, like me.

Best scenes: Kai playing the piano, David’s greeting upon Miranda’s return, juggling cookies and the joining of the four.

I switched favorite genres years ago yet there are a handful of paranormal/ urban fantasy series that I just can’t seem to let go and the Shadow World is one of them. What I love about the series is seeing how a weak and vulnerable human – Miranda Grey changes over the years.

She isn’t the only one changing. The story line itself now involves not only vampires but now witches and elves too. Witnessing how the different beings create this formidable bond is what keeps these book interesting.

The story starts off shaky at best. After the loss of his beloved, Deven is out of control and is taking Nico down with him. David is just about done with him which is concerning considering their history. I kept wondering what would it take for him to snap out of it and my gosh Dianne Sylvan doesn’t disappoint in delivering blow after blow.

Again, the twist and turns are endless. Way to shake up the Shadow World! After Deven got it together, I was completely immersed. I definitely couldn’t put the book down.

My only regret is the wait…Dianne, any chance you can write the next book any faster? I need more of this tetrad in my life! Wait, what? Yes! I know you’re curious now. If you are a fan of the series like I am, pick this book up and find out what I am talking about!

I just...don't know how I feel about so much of this book. There was SO LITTLE action, and SO MUCH TALKING. It is nothing like the series when it began, and while I get that a lot of healing had to be done, it just...was a little much. I feel like this book was more of a placeholder than anything. The worst part was that I really loved book five, but this book was nothing like that. There were no epic battle scenes, the MCs don't really seem to be ANY closer to finishing off Morningstar than they did in book five. I feel like some of the characters like Olivia and Jacob and Cora should have been present and weren't basically AT ALL for no real reason. They are part of the Circle and yet we barely see them?? Not. Right. If there is going to be another book I really hope it gets back to what it was before and forgets this book happened for the most part. I love Deven's character, but even he was overly whiny in this book and it annoyed me to no end. I feel like the ONLY one who didn't whine incessantly or annoy me was Miranda, who ALSO wasn't nearly as present as she should have been. I feel like this entire book was all about Deven, Nico, and David. Mainly Deven and Nico being emotionally broken and coming back from it. Not great, not happy.

Yep I should've stopped this reading this book after the 1st page like I wanted to.
It pains me to give this book only 2 stars because this used to be one of my favourite series. But it's gotten that bad and doesn't even deserve the 2 stars.
The gap between this book and the last one was too long and it made it really difficult to remember what happened.
The characters are nothing like who they were at the start.
The overall plot was boring.
They introduced new characters for literally no reason and then killed them off pretty much straight away.
And all of the sex scenes and love triangles were just infuriating and not needed! There is nothing worse than when authors introduce love triangles thinking it'll spice up the book when in actual fact it does the complete opposite. Sometimes 2 people being insanely inlove with explosive chemistry is enough!
And then the orgys started and I just about threw my iPad. No, just no.
This series is now ruined and I'm still slightly upset over it.

i couldn't finish reading this.
should have given up in book 2. however, i kept coming back bc i didn't want to give up on this series. book 1 was so good and the story itself had so much potential.
then it's like the author thought it was great to just throw random characters in the book and make them have sex with each other. what happened to this whole "soulmate" thing? the world building in book 1 didn't give readers any clue about "open" marriage or that it was a common thing to be not loyal to your soulmate. maybe that's why i find it so distasteful in this series. there were many cries of outrage in book 2 when "that" happened. i feel like the author was getting back at us and rubbing the infidelity in our faces in the subsequent books. anyway, i am so disappointed with the direction the series took.

It's really hard for me to rate this book because I loved and hated at the same time.

Amazing storytelling and writing but got too technical with the hocus-pocus theme, sighs...

Hated the directly of romance she had for my teddy-bear-geek, David...he's becoming more like a spoiled gigolo, ugh! Whereas Miranda remained strong and true. And at times carried everyone's trouble on her own. She's selfless, hands down! Deven, after the amazing previous book, had been spiraling out of control and worked his way back to everyone's graces, especially Nico.

The mystery of the Morningstar, the Circle and Kia continued in the next book. Hopefully the next book coming out sooner before she loses me. It was difficult to get into the series...

Really this should be a 3.5. I was very frustrated with all the drama and self-indulgent morbidity of the main characters. Several of them needed to be smacked into reality. I still like Miranda and David, but Deven and Nico were getting on my nerves. I was honestly hoping this would be the last book in the series. I had a suspicion things were going off the rails when the author stopped being published through Ace. I feel invested in this battle, and I really hope it ends soon as I would like to leave these characters behind. If we could have stayed focused on Miranda's magnificence, that would have been one thing. But this whole world has become one big drama sink.

There have been some really harsh reviews of this series which is an absolute shame. Specifically because of the sexual content. First let me remind you all that these books are fiction. Let’s Face it these books are very mild compared to the Anita Blake series and received way more harsh reviews. Plus if you look at the reviews, no one has anything derogatory to say about the writing nor the storyline itself, just the sex.

Frankly, I love the series. I check periodically in hopes that the next book in the series is finally released.

Best one so far!

OMG! I spent more on this book than usual. I couldn't wait for the price to drop, but it was worth every penny. It was the best so far. I only wish the next one was out already. If you like vampires and epic story-tel!ing and intensity, you will love this series!

This book is such a disappointment, and a total waste of money. The first books were fantastic. This one put the majority of focus about everyone sleeping with each other, instead of the actual plot. I'm not even sure I can finish reading it.

Don't waste your time.

I used to really really like this series, but this was not up to the emotional intensity of prior books.
Let's just say that when I went to add the dark angsty book I finished last night to goodreads, I simply couldn't remember and finally had to grab my Kindle to see it was this one. I'll probably read at least one more anyway.
