Rate this book
Leah Tomson has been on the run since she was a kid. Every day is a struggle to stay alive. Now turning thirty, she wonders why she’s still here. When her path crosses with a boy who’s sucked into her world, she's got someone else depending on her for the first time. She won't let him down. When she finds them trapped by a mercenary and his crew, death is imminent. She knows she’ll fail a child, again.

Commander Hannes 'Otso' Otila just finished a mission and is on his way home when his trip is disrupted by an unexpected cargo of the curvy, mouthy, and sassy type. With this luscious woman comes a boy and a lot of problems that drive him bat shit crazy. But instead of letting them go, his biggest desire, and that of his polar bear, is to keep her forever. He'll happily hold her his captive and if the moment comes, give his life for her.

A big-time drug lord wants Leah dead, and it's up to Hannes and Leah to keep her and the boy alive. That's turning out to be harder than either anticipated when his second-in-command turns on him. While Hannes protects Leah from danger, protecting his own heart from her is a lot more difficult. The burning need to have her pushes his control, but is she worth the chance of another broken heart? Hannes is about to realize that no matter what he decides, his bear made a choice: Leah is his and no amount of internal struggle will change the animal's mind.

Apparently, I am reading a whole different story than everyone else because I could barely follow the book. I had to read the first 25% twice just to understand the pacing. I love all of Milly Taidens writing but this is a disjointed mess.

Constantly switching between names or references to the H is confusing if it is within a short time frame. The H is called Blondie, Commander, Otis, Hannes, Otso, bear king, polar otis, all within the first 15% or so and some of the names changed page by page. The first "bad guy" is a bald bastard aka Korhonen, lieutenant, monster, bald monster. All of these names for both characters were used interchangeably within scenes. I'll stop here but I could go on. Longer in a book that can be fine as you get to know the characters and their alias are but jeez that's too much too early.

Just starting out I thought I was missing pages or I had multiple characters and was going crazy. A ton of plot line threads was opened and barely touched on in the very beginning to be "suspenseful" but was barely skimmed and few were just plopped in. These sentences can heighten the suspense but you can't have 4 or 5 of them without taking the plot deeper otherwise you get readers like me who go...OK so wtf is this book about and why are everyone and everything a fuckin mystery. Basically, it was fluff, one liner about a character's background to try and be mysterious... more fluff, couple names thrown around, another mysterious one liner about a different character...more fluff....The pacing was extremely off and ditch the freaking four thousand names for each character. I am sure that if I kept reading it would all come together but now I have a damn headache and it isn't worth it to keep going.

What finally made me DNF was this.

If I didn't know Milly's name as an author I would assume this is a debut unedited workpiece....

I am happy she is delving out from her norm but this one was not a winner.

The blurb for this was sounded intriguing so I was eager to give it a try. Sadly I was very dispappointed. I really don’t like writing negative reviews, but the only thing about this book that I liked was that it was offered as a kindleunlimited. Aside from that it was pretty bad in all aspects. Boring, bland and generic feeling characters. A ridiculous plot and story development. The writing style was very choppy – there were numerous times I would have to re-read certain sentences and paragraphs just to make out what was being said. Needless to say, not a book Id recommend.

Fast paced, sexy, funny, and super exciting new series from Milly Taiden.
A definite new favorite from Ms. Taiden. I was enthralled from the beginning on this one. A new type of book from this author. Milly's known for her super erotic sexy reads and while this one was sexy it didn't have the same amount of erotica of her normal books. No complaints though. The storyline was so captivating and the build up between the characters made it completely worth reading.
I loved Leah and Hannes, the relationship between the two was quite amusing. They had a definite attraction and chemistry but at times didn't even really like one another. It made for some very fun and interesting interactions between them. And Ivan, he was a riot. I loved the motherly instincts he brought out in Leah and sometimes the pure frustration.
With lots of action, excitement, and some supernatural elements this series is going to be a major hit with readers. I eagerly am awaiting the next book.

Wow! A totally different side of Milly Taiden!
I loved this book, this was more suspenseful then anything she has ever written. Not as much romance and very little smut, but still just as awesome as her other work.
I loved the instant connection Leah had with Ivan, and how she protected him.
Leah, was extremely tough but then again she had to be. Ivan was like the comic relief that was definitely needed in this book.
Hannes, was a mystery throughout the book. So glad to see a change in him at the end.
Can't wait for more!

This book is different from any others I've read by Milly. This was more heart racing action and romantic suspense then the more light hearted PDA series. I'd say it was more like the Protector series then any of the others. Leah's backstory is heartbreaking and it comes through in her every decision. Hannes was very difficult to like, but by the end of the book I loved him. I'm really looking forward to more adventures like this. I hope this is a start to another wonderful series by Milly Taiden.

She's on the run and he was completing a mission, neither expected the electricity that flared between them! Milly Taiden spins a suspenseful paranormal tale in The Bear King's Captive that will enthrall and keep you turning the pages to see what will happen next. In this 'Curvy Paranormal Shape Shifter Romance', you will find humankind and shifters living side by side in a world that is filled with danger and death. This is the Bear King, commander Hannes Otila and his mate, Leah Tomson's story.

Trapped by a man that stars in her erotic dreams, Leah doesn't know what to do. Will he turn her over for the bounty? Ten million is a lot of money to say no to! Hunting a way to escape and at the same time keep the innocent trapped with her safe is a daunting dilemma. Can she trust the Commander when he says he does not want the money and will keep them safe? Her bigger problem, however is how she can keep the big oaf at arms length!

His bear is tearing him apart trying to get out and claim its mate. What does that mean? Who is this spunky, sexy woman and why can't he let her go? There are dangerous people that want her at any cost and some are hidden within plan sight. He needs to protect her and keep her for himself. This may be one mission that doesn't have the ending he planned.

Once again Milly Taiden has created the perfect book for her readers to enjoy. It has an intriguing storyline and beautifully crafted characters that will entertain you to the last page. As always Ms. Taiden's sex-i-lous alpha males bring the heat and sizzle to life as the book unfolds! Great job and an excellent addition to my library.

Milly Taiden fans take note. She definitely flipped the script with this release, The Bear King's Captive. First, the book is among one of her highest page counts, topping almost three hundred pages. But, that's not the thing that is most noticeable about the story. The Bear King's Captive dialed down the sexy that Taiden is usually known for and amped up the suspense, drama, and intrigue. Yes, never fear...there are sexy times between the characters, but the focus of the story IS the story and not just what happens between the sheets. The Bear King's Captive contains a woman on the run, a teenager who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, mercenaries...and PIRATES. Oh yeah, Taiden stepped it up with this one. New and old fans alike will definitely enjoy this. It's a fresh take on a paranormal romance.

While I love Milly Taiden's writing (& this book was no different) the writing does stray a bit from what she normally writes. Leah witnessed something as a child that no one should. She is also scary clever with computers.

Hannes is drawn to Leah, but doesn't want to be because of something he has been through. Then there is the 10 million dollar bounty on Leah, tempting I'm sure for a "mercenary" like Hannes.

It's an interesting development, the relationship between these two. Toss in a kid in the wrong place at the wrong time, a greedy lieutenant with no respect and a very low view of women, pirates, and an Alfred-like butler and this turns into quite the ride.

The Leah and Hannes' story doesn't end with this book and I for one am eagerly waiting for the next book, The Bear King's Revenge.

Disappointed

I love Milly Taiden books. This one was a huge disappointment. I struggled through the first half of the book until I finally just gave up trying to read it. I didn't like the hero or the heroine. The plot was weird and hard to follow with bits of unrealistic events even for shifter fiction. I hope she goes back to writing the stories with characters you root for and relate to with a story you can follow.

I wanted more, a longer story & by gosh I got it. Milly Taiden nailed it. A very good story line, very different from the fast paced world wind sexy hotness Milly does. This was tense & funny, it drew me into a whole new dangerous & exciting world. A very intriguing character line, strong & witty with deep passion. Loved it.

overall I liked the story. The pacing was good with enough action and quiet scenes to make it an easy read. I was disappointed that the gutsy living on the streets one step ahead of the bounty hunters hacker chick turns into a busty eye candy in a white frock then into a wimp. I liked the 'made into' shape shifter rather than a born into it shape shifter. The story contains all the usual tropes of butler, hidden fortunes, estranged family and crazy bad guy which Milly Taiden handles well. I am looking forward to seeing her work in ten years time.

Bow to the king

This has to be one of my favorite books by this author! I love the back stories on both the main characters, the trusty side kick, and the hint of a deeper connection to the kidnapped kid at the end. The author did a fantastic job of creating a story that is going to pull you in and keep you reading until the very end. I hope the next book comes out soon! I can’t wait to read it.

Brilliant

The Bear Kings Captive by Milly Taiden. Bear shifter Hannes is on his way home when he finds Leah and Ivan on the docks near his ship. Leah has a price on her head and Ivan has just taken a bullet meant for her. Hannes takes them both on his ship because he can’t leave Leah, she is his mate.

Not a favorite but an alright read for the most part. Nothing really happened as far as the problems Leah and Hannes faced so by the end it’s frustrating. It was a dead giveaway who Ivan was to him just by his reaction but the next one should be better.

Leah is on the run and has been for a long time from the man that killed her family. As if life isn't complicated enough for her, she narrowly escapes an attack and seems to have picked up a sidekick, a teenage boy, Ivan, that has gotten dragged into her world. But he's with her now and she'll protect him with everything she has.

Hannes is on his way home from a mission when he inadvertently runs into Leah and Ivan. But it seems the captain that Hannes and his crew are catching a ride with are delivering their package, aka Leah, in order to collect the "reward" for her offered by the dangerous man that ruined her life so long ago. While Hannes doesn't like it, he doesn't stop anything from progressing, but he does try to help Leah and Ivan when he can.

Regardless of how many times Hannes tells himself, and his other half the polar bear, that she, and by extension Ivan, are not their concern, he is inexplicably drawn to her. He fights it though, writing it off as lust, as he vowed years ago to never love again after losing the woman he thought was his one great love. (Psst...we later learn he had drunk goggles on whenever she was around and someone close to Hannes was able to see her as she truly was.)

Hannes and Leah have suffered tremendously in their lives, both emotionally and physically, and have erected walls around their hearts to save themselves from more pain. But it seems those walls don't stand a chance against fate and they quickly become important to each other, all the while still fighting the inevitable. *silly characters*

Will Hannes find out the truth about one of his "trusted" crew members before it's too late? Will Hannes let Leah be delivered to the man after her? Will Ivan be reunited with his Mom? Is it a coincidence that Ivan and his Mom were at the station the same time as Leah? Or are they somehow a key part of the story and/or maybe of a character's past? Will Hannes and Leah accept that they're meant to be together? Will they both conquer their pasts and look forward to the future? What will happen in book two?

One-click now and find out all these answers and more. Ha, you thought I told you everything? No way! That takes away the fun of reading and I could never do that to you.

On a side note, I have to say I love that the beginning of this book takes place in Cleveland, and mentions Cincinnati. As a native Ohioan that grew up and still lives 30 minutes from Cleveland, it's always nice to have a shout out to my home state and I loved Leah as soon as it's mentioned she's wearing a Cavaliers' hat. *Go Cavs!*

What a long strange trip it's been!!

Leah & Hannes story is different from other Milly Taiden stories I've read. It's longer, full of more details, not a love at first sight affair, & I love the whole storyline of who the characters are! I can't wait for the Bear King's Revenge!!

Enjoy!! I did!!

Oh what a book. Milly Taiden took me on the adventure of epic well told stories. I was so enraptured I didn't want to put it down or it to end. As book 1 of this series and knowing there is going to be more I truly can't wait to see where it goes from here.

“Run and hide. I find you one day. The nightmare faded. Anguish tore her heart as it always did after the dream.”

Leah had a child hood made from the nightmares that came true. She refused to let one man control her life and she will do everything to get back at him. After her last attack at him the price on her head is now 10 million everyone is out for a piece of that. She is caught by not turning her back on a boy she meets at a train station and trying to keep him safe. Then the next part of her life begins and it is no easier then her past. Always some one out to capture and use her.

“You being nice means a bullet in the arse instead of the head. True nice is not wanting to hurt another’s feelings--showing you care.” Hannes frowned. “I’m a soldier, Win, not a Romeo.”

Commander Hannes Otila or 'Otso' meaning bear Has no idea what will happen when he finds his sister and goes to talk to her. The hellish life he has lead in the service of his country has lead him to the person he know is. Until he meets Leah she cause his inner side to want what he cant have. Why would one of the most dangerous drug dealers want a woman like her what caused the bounty on her to be so high? and can he keep her safe even form one of his own?

“Show her.” What was he talking about? Show her what? K’s hand wrapped around Leah’s throat. “I said show her, bear.” His insides froze. He understood what the man wanted: for Leah to see the beast within so she would run in fear of him. He’d never have a chance with her.”

Great story but a little confusing at parts. Will keep you hooked

Leah saw her family killed when she was eleven. She hacked the man who killed them and took a bunch of his money, put him on no fly lists, now he has a ten million dollar bounty on her head. She is at a train station and a boy gets caught up in her escape and they both end up on a ship with the bounty hunter.
Hannes is ex military and a polar bear shifter. He is commander of some mercenaries. His bear part knows Leah is its mate but he has been hurt before. He takes her to his home in Finland, to keep her safe but she thinks he's just waiting to turn her over to the drug lord. When one of his men shows up and beats her, Hannes comes back just in time to save her but his second in command gets away. He stays by her side until she is better and tells her everything about himself. Now he hopes she will forgive him and stay with him.
Bears. Hackers. Crazy man. A butler who knows all the secrets. Can't wait for second book.
__________
WOLF FEVER
Only thing I didn't like was I got to page 177 and it was the end of the book. I thought is was supposed to have been 235 pages. There is a short story at the end. I loved WOLF FEVER.
Raine escapes from a sleep study, feeling something is wrong with her. She feels like there is something inside her. She goes to Ryder's bar to buy his services. She wants him to kill her but one look and he knows she is his mate. Raine knows they injected her with a wolf serum making her strong. As they search for Ryder's missing cousin, they try to figure out who injected Raine.
Great story with plenty of sex, Alpha wolves and a crazy scientist. Hoping there will be a story for Mandy and one for Theo.

Bear King's Captive is probably my favorite book I've read by Milly Taiden.

This book isn't like all of Milly's other books. If you've read any of her other books you are used to hot steamy sex scenes, Alpha shifter males, and curvy females who have a lot of sass!
But even though this one is a bit different, it's no less AMAZING!

Leah Tomson has known pain nobody should ever know. She's seen her family killed and has felt hunted all her life. After never being part of a loving family and living in an orphanage all her life she has hardened her heart and sworn to get revenge for those taken too soon from her. She doesn't let anyone get close to her and never stays in one place to long. But one trip to the train station results in her running for her life again and with a kid. Leah is determined this time to not let someone else die who is depending on her.

Commander Hannes 'Otso' Otila has also known pain that nobody can ever imagine. Being tortured mentally, physically, and emotionally is only the tip of the iceberg. Hannes has also had an animal forced in his blood, and now him and the beast are always fighting for dominance and secrecy from others. But a run in with Leah at the docks has his beast determined to keep her and mate her.

This book is chalk full of adventure, laughs, sex chemistry, and suspense. You can't help but wonder when these two will finally quit being stubborn and give in to their feelings. This is a full HEA book. But I can't wait for the second to have more Leah and Hannes adventures =)

A longer book you can really sink you teeth into! Commander Hannes Otila is a polar bear shifter collecting evidence on a powerful drug lord when he crosses paths with Leah Tomson, the woman that the drug lord he collecting information on wants so bad, he put a $10 million bounty on her head to be brought to him alive. Hannes has done his best to suppress the bear he doesn't understand, but the bear refuses to be silenced when it comes to Leah, the bear knows she is their mate, even if the man has doubts. Leah has been hunted by the drug lord since she was eleven and he killed her family, she's managed to elude him for twenty years when her luck runs out and she gets captured and treated to a free one star cruise headed towards Spain and the drug lord. Both characters have been though terrible things and I really loved how Leah was spunky and sassy despite her otherwise horrible life, she found the positive in things no matter how small. Hannes shut down after going through his terrible experiences but it was amazing to watch him open up and change as he allowed Leah into his life. The interactions between Leah and Ivan were fantastic, Ivan made a very goofy, dorky sidekick to Leah and I was sad/happy when he got to return home. I hope we get to see more of him. I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what shenanigans Leah and Hannes get into next and what happens with the drug lord.

Leah was a loner, always on the run with her only friend which is her computer. She is running from her past, running from opening up to people for fear of losing them. She has hardend her heart so that she does not get hurt. She's seen her family killed and has felt hunted all her life. After never being part of a loving family and living in an orphanage all her life. Hannes is a merc and kidnapping was not his way of doing things and not what he signed up for. He inadvertently kidnapped his mate and a boy. Now he isn't sure what to do with either. Hannes has also had an animal forced in his blood, and now him and his beast are always fighting for dominance and secrecy from others. But a run in with Leah at the docks has his beast determined to keep her and mate her. Leah running for her life and Hannes doing an about face on protecting her because he does not want to hand her over for the $10 Million dollars that is on her head. Leah and Hannes are pulled to each other, they want each other, but they are stubborn and set in their ways they think they do not deserve each other. Will they let themselves be together and face the danger she is in or will they stick to there ways?

Mrs Taiden has done such a great job on this new series there is a lot of adventure, hot chemistry, and it has you pulled into the story and makes you want to be there to see how the story on folds.I look forward to reading much more of this series and see how the story’s end.

Finally I am so happy this author has written a full length book! This is what I had been missing from this author. This is one of the best Bear shifter full-length books I have read.

Leah Tomson had been on the run for years. They were after her and wanted her dead. She had a bounty on her head. She was also a video gammer, hacker, computer geek too. Now they had found her again and she had to run again. As she is evading this new guy, she comes across a teenager who is frustrated because he can't get passed a game level. She helps him by explaining how to beat the level. He is thrilled and they talk and he realizes who she is. Then all heck brakes loose. She runs, but the kid follows. They come across a gorgeous specimen of a man.

Commander Hannes 'Otso' Otila is on a secret mission with his team when he is getting ready to embark on a ship. He helps the woman and kid and he ends up taking them with him on the ship.

From here on out it is an adventure filled with action, tension, and passion. The storyline is very well rounded. It is a storyline I had no read before. Both characters are complexed and intriguing.

I was only disappointed that it continues with their story in book 2. I thought the second book would be about Axel. It left you with some unanswered questions in reference to Ivan and Lt. K.

Now I hope this author does not take too long to get the next two book out.

31 year old Leah has been hiding and running for a long time you see she has a very high bounty on her head after having witnessed the murder of her entire family when she was 11. She has been very successful at till now that she has a tag along she wasn't counting on and must keep safe. How to escape this bear of a man, that awakens feelings in her she shouldn't have, especially a dangerous mercenary. Leah discovers some surprises about the mercenary though.

Hannes is a very scarred man, he has made it his mission to save others from the horrors that he has lived, but on his way to a mission he is waylaid by a mouthy chit and her companion, but he can't seem to rid himself of the baggage that seems like trouble, but he has the feeling that she is in more trouble than she is. He has also closed himself off from any type of relationship after having lost his love, but the girl stirs something deep in his his bear, but he fights it, maybe it's best that she believes what she will of him. Will he be able to control his beast, will Leah melt his cold exterior?

This is a great standalone, suspenseful, action packed new series that will keep you glued to the end. I look forward to reading the next book.

Milly is stunning in her talent to capture and hold us and she does it so well. Her latest story the Bear King’s Captive, a bit diff than I normally see from her but no less great story and great writing.

A shifter that doesn’t quiet know what is going on, his bear is all but foaming at the mouth wanting to tear out and claim their mate. Hannes is smart but a bit clueless in that aspect. All he does know is that he has an overwhelming urge to protect, well yes and bit Leah.

Our girl is on the run and has been for a long time. Leah has lost a bit of her personality yeah the girl can be rude. Combined with horrible secrets in her past and being on the run most of her life can do that to a girl.

This was a full novel, with characters fitting their personality and meshing well within the story. Its not a lot of hot sexy drop on all fours butt wiggling sex. Milly spoiled us a little I think - laughs. But a bit of a mystery is afoot, danger in the air and a lot of money offered on the table. How did that song go Money for nothing and tricks for free?

Consider this sexy and sassy read recommended. Enjoy

This is a great book by Milly Taiden. Leah Tomson, has been on the run since she was a child, running from the man who was responsible for killing her parents. She is once again on the run and ends up getting trapped by a mercenary and his crew. She knows if they turn her over to the man who killed her parents, that they will kill her as well. Commander Hannes ‘Otso’ Otila is finished with his mission and is on his way home, when his trip is disrupted by an unexpected cargo, Leah and the boy she is with. When Hannes meets Leah he realizes she is his mate. He will do anything to protect her and the boy. If you are looking for a great book with romance, bear shifters, humor, and suspense then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Our heroine has been on the run for most of her life. The hero has a past that haunts him. When they meet there is an immediate attraction. This was a very different shifter romance. There was a lot more suspense than this author usually writes. There is a lot of fighting and the hero gets to save the day, but I like that he also has unexpected help. He is a shifter in an unusual way, and he is still adjusting to that.
The chemistry between the hero and heroine is great. The interactions between the heroine and the teenager that gets drawn into the story are also a very good touch. I wished I liked the hero better, but I'm not so into the strong, silent time with angst. He has good reasons for the angst, and it is well written, though.
I didn't think a couple important plot points were consistent with other things we were told about the main characters.

This is another amazing story by Milly Taiden. Take two of the most stubborn, pigheaded people and throw them together for any length of time, and you definitely get sparks. Take these sparks, add danger and blur the lines between the good and bad guys- it adds up to one suspenseful and great read.

To tell you how intensely the characters are portrayed and draw you into the story is difficult. I spent the beginning of the book so frustrated at the characters for being so stubborn, and then to watch their growth and change over the whole book was really entertaining. I read this book in 1 day because I just couldn't put it down. I needed to know how they were going to live!

This book left questions unanswered, but there are no major cliffhangers that I can't handle. I know this is the first book in a new series, and I can't wait for the next book to be released!!

Where do I begin? This book is wonderful. It is so different than most of Milly's books. For one thing it is longer than her books usually are and it is more in depth. Once I realized that this was not going to be one of her funny yet hot books, I settled in for one of the best rides of my life. I think that for those of us who have read every Milly Taiden book we are used to funny humor mixed with shifter heat and this book is simply not that.

This book is in depth. The characters show pain and real life emotions. Leah is being hunted and has been hiding. Hannes was sent to find her and turn her in for a huge bounty but can he? This is a different kind of romance more of a mystery suspense romance with some shifter thrown in. I highly recommend it.... just keep in mind it is not like her shorter books. This is the start of a new direction I hope for us fans.
