Shivers! #2

The Pirate Who's Back in Bunny Slippers: A Middle Grade Adventure Story for Reluctant Readers (Ages 8-12)

Rate this book
Shivers, the scaredy-est pirate to ever sail the Seven Seas, is back. Comic book–like illustrations in each chapter bring Shivers to life and invite even the most reluctant readers to join the adventure. Perfect for fans of such series as Stick Dog, Big Nate, Dork Diaries, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

This time, Shivers must set sail again to get his beloved ship, the Land Lady, back from Mayor Sheila B. President. Shivers won’t be going alone, however. He’ll be bringing his best pal, Margo, and his loyal fishmate, Albee, on a clingy-clam and hot dog filled adventure. Like all good pirates, Shivers will just have to grab his swimmies (and his bunny slippers) and jump right into this epic tale.

Slightly Demented, Antic Fun

I wasn't entirely sure about this because the whole pretend-pirate thing felt like it could get too precious. I was pleased to see, though, that the authors knew exactly how to take the silliness right up to the edge and then back off and stay on the rails.

Shivers is a pirate kid, bunny slippers and all. He is afraid of almost everything, (get it? - "Shivers"), but that doesn't keep him from adventuring. His first mate, actually "fishmate", is a goldfish. His best pal, Margo, is a resourceful, no-nonsense girl who keeps everything on a reasonably level keel, (and who is easily a leading character in her own right). It's never entirely clear how much of what is happening is real and how much is Shivers' overactive imagination. (Does he really live on a landlocked pirate ship on a beach? I think so. Was that cannon fire? No, it was microwave popcorn. Did they just make a raft out of beach balls, surfboards and swimmies? Probably.)

MILD GENERAL PLOT SPOILERS. Anyway, Shivers and Margo have to follow rhyming clues to find a treasure, which takes them through a number of increasingly antic set scenes. Then there's a race to the treasure. And a pirate to pirate fight over the treasure, and it all just gets more and more barmy. As you might imagine, the plot itself doesn't make a lot of sense, but this isn't a standard mystery or treasure adventure. It's an excuse for non-stop gags and jokes.

Some of the jokes are of the "And don't call be Shirley..." variety. Some are pretty clever and some are downright inspired. Lots of puns and a fair number of sophisticated deadpan throwaway lines. There's also a fair amount of making fun of the genre and some inside jokes for people who read a lot of these sorts of books. Funny exaggeration is shot through the entire narrative. (Someone dives "head first, then body second, then feet third"; I think that's pretty clever for a kid book.) Of course, we have a lot of gross food, some puking, a few unsavory characters, smelly things, slimy things, weird food, and the like. But the book moves along so quickly, the cross-talk is so fast, and the plot is so manic that we never linger over any one joke or bit of business for more than a line or two. And it's all so lively and good-humored that the kid humor never feels forced or calculated.

So, this is a book that revels in its clever nutty kid friendliness. And it's all so good-natured and positive, (no false or odd steps in the humor or characters), that the reader is happy to go along for the ride. An interesting and appealing find.

(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

My Review:
I don’t even know where to start, Shivers is one of the most fantastic characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading. He is so adorable and in a complete panic. I can’t get enough of him and plan to grab every shivers books that comes out. Shivers is back and in Bunny Slippers, he is being called out by the Mayor to help get the torch back that was stolen in the last book. Only problem is Shivers has no idea where it is and the Mayor just stole his boat house. Shivers doesn’t do very good on adventures, he’s a pirate that prefers to stay on land. With the help of his friend Margo and his fish first mate Albee they set off on an adventure to find the torch and get his house back.

Shivers is scared of pretty much everything and can even make, making popcorn sound terrifying. This book was so cute and just like the first one, I loved every minute of the adventure I went on with Shivers and Margo. I laughed so hard and cheered Shivers on often, you would think for a middle grade book things would go smoothly but nope not for Shivers once you think things are about to get better, BAM, something else happens and Shivers is freaking out all over again. I love how just when you think he is about to be brave he explains why what he is doing scared the heck out of him, to funny.

I adore Shivers and love going on adventures with him. I look forward to seeing where Shivers goes never. This is a fun series for all ages and even though Shivers is mostly panicked, you can really seem him overcome some of his greatest fears and I think that is a great lesson for kids young and old. I love this series, something I recommend reading, you wont be disappointed and the illustrations are so fun too.

I understand I am not the target audience for this book, but an 8-year-old, wouldn't like this book, and he is the target audience. He left before the book finished. That's pretty bad.

I don't even know what aspect to write about first. The main character in this wild book is Shivers; he is an adorable pirate, one of the best pirates I have ever read about. He is always in a panic, and he is cute. I can't get enough of him, which was very surprising. He is the only reason why I didn't quit reading this book half way through.

In this novel, Shivers is back, in his cute little bunny slippers. He has been forced by Mayor, President, which seriously, eye roll in this name. She forces him to start a quest that forces him into dangerous and adorable situations. He is on his way to get the torch to save his boat from whoever took it.

The story line is all over the place, there is zero point to this book, as shivers never really overcomes his fears. I dislike stories that seem to have no purpose or point.

Overall it was an okay book, but if your kid likes it then that is great. I would just recommend this with caution.

Shivers, the pirate who's afraid of everything, has completed his very first adventure returns, but finds himself in trouble with the mayor. She has confiscated his ship The Land Lady, and given him until the end of the day to return the Treasure Torch which she is sure he has stolen. So, Shivers and his best friend Margo, must solve a riddle that will lead them to the elusive treasure that every pirate covets, but can't find.

My 9 year old son checked this out from the library- he raced through the first book in the series by himself. This one didn't hold his attention as much, but I still thought it was cute. The premise is a pirate who is afraid of everything- my son could BE this pirate, so I like how relatable they are. The chapters all build together nicely. My son didn't realize it, but the author is part of the Story Pirates team, and we love them! We were excited to read it for family storytime.

This book reads like an episode of the Fairly Oddparents. The way Shivers reacts and responds to things, the way everyone in this story works, it's really very cartoony. The illustrations just help reinforce this fact.

It does take a reader who doesn't like TV cartoons much some effort to push through, but ultimately it should be good for reluctant readers who enjoy Nickelodeon type cartoons.
