Ryuji Takasu has learned the hard way that appearances can be deceiving. Despite his inwardly sweet personality, his unintentionally sharp gaze and aggressive features give him the air of a delinquent thug, putting his chances at making friends, let alone a girlfriend, next to zero.

It’s Ryuji’s first day in junior high school and it seems as if things are looking up. He gets to sit in between his only friend, Yusaku, and, more importantly, the girl he’s secretly crushing on, Minori Kushieda. But just when he thinks the stars are aligned in his favor, he unwittingly crosses the most feared girl in school, Taiga Aisaku, making her onto his arch enemy. To top it off, Taiga has moved in right next door to Ryuji and happens to be Minori’s best friend! Can this school year possibly get any worse?!

I've been sitting on this one for a while... umm... 1o years actually. But, I'm surprised. I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. I think you need to be in the right mood though. I know, if I read this on the wrong day, I wouldn't have had such a good experience with it. This is a style of comedy/romance that's very hit-or-miss for me. But, I think because the comedy was based more on the individual character's personality, and less-so on just the situation, it worked a lot better than similar stories. The only problem now is that we only collected the first volumes... it'll probably be a while before I can read the rest and really make a valid judgement of it. Oh well.

3.5 stars.

I watched the anime many years ago, and I decided to start with the manga. I can honestly say that I like the anime more. There is a lot of dynamic, lots of action in here, that just doesn't translate well to print. A lot of the humour is lost (to me) and I don't like Taiga that much.

Taiga in the anime was a total bitch, but in this one she is that even more. Or it just has been too long since I last watched the anime. :) Either way, I found her actions particularly mean and rude. So our main character isn't allowed any happiness, even though he promised he would keep her secret a secret. She keeps interfering and being annoying. Her attitude is more of a girl aged 3 or 4, or one that is 10/11. Everyone has to conform to her and her alone. Dare to come close and she will be sure to practically kill you. As expected, she has barely any friends. This is a big reason why I rated the first volume a 3.5. Attitude is fun, but Taiga takes it a few notches to far.

Our main character, I really liked him. He hasn't changed from the anime and he is still himself. I really liked how everyone was scared of him, but soon they find out he isn't that bad. He is just a guy cursed with scary eyes. :)
I loved his crush and how he acted. You don't see that often, a guy who stutters or blushes when they get close to their crush. Mostly it is the other way around.
I really like him, though I wish he would speak up against Taiga and just tell her no. Screw it that your secret comes out, screw that. No one deserves being treated as a dog.

One fun thing though was that I could imagine the characters with their anime voices. :) I could just hear Kugimiya Rie shout as Taiga.

The art is decent, it had a few hitches and bad spots, but all in all I liked the art.

I am not sure if I would recommend this manga. Maybe when I read volume 2 or further. I do know I would recommend the anime.

Everyone thinks that Takasu Ryuuji is a juvenile delinquent. But he's not. He just has squinty eyes, which make him look like he's glaring even when he's not. Really, he's just a normal high school guy with a demented parakeet, a mom who sleeps all day because she works nights at a club, a bespectacled best friend, and a huge crush on Kushieda Minori, a cheerful girl in his class. But then he finds a love note to his best friend in his bag, put there accidentally by the meanest, toughest girl in the school: the 'Palm Top Tiger', Aisaka Taiga. As it turns out, Aisaka had forgotten to put the actual letter in the envelope, but she doesn't know this, and attacks Takasu in his sleep at his house. Luckily he avoids being bludgeoned to death, and, after giving the envelope back, they reach an agreement: Aisaka will help Takasu get closer to Kushieda, but only if he helps her get closer to his best friend, and practically be her slave. This means making her meals, waking her up in the morning, walking her to school, etc. etc. But then their classmates start wondering why they're spending so much time together...
I laughed out loud reading this book. Which is kind of embarrassing when you just so happened to be reading in public. The art is good, though the panel placement is about average and could stand a little more creativity. The characters are amusing, the premise is interesting, and the ending does a great job of making you want the next book (NOW!!!) I recommend it, even for those who don't like shoujo very much.
Now if you'll excuse me I've got to get my hands on volume two. Goodbye.

2.5 -

This was such a let down. I had so much secondhand embarrassment while reading this, especially during the first few chapters. I ended up having to take a break from it because I was so frustrated! Usually that doesn’t happen, since it’s a)mostly pictures and b)tops 200pgs long. This one really required a break, though.

The one thing that prevents me from rating it even lower is the consistently good art and paneling skills. I like the style and how the tone was used.

I really really really don’t like Taiga. She was rude and pushy. She didn’t really give off the Tsundere vibe that it was trying to give her. Most the time I enjoy Tsunderes, but not this time.

Ryuuji was one of the better characters (even though he’s dumb in some instances. But let’s face it; we all are).

The overall plot was a good idea but didn’t carry out in a way I enjoyed. It was a little much.

Loved the main character Ryuji ( a.k. a Dragon). He is a total sweetheart. However, the main girl Taiga (a.k.a Tiger) gets on my nerves sometimes. I have some problems with extreme tsundere types. Still their interactions were enjoyable.

Taiga è pericolosamente imbranata, facilmente irritabile, terribilmente permalosa e, senza alcun dubbio, estremamente scontrosa.

Ultimamente i manga romantici mi sembravano tutti uguali.

Since I've already reviewed the Toradora light novel there's not much point in me rehashing my thoughts on the plot and characters. This manga adaptation is exceedingly faithful to the source material -- more so than the anime, which, though excellent, had to compress all ten novels into about twelve hours -- and captures the essence of the story, though we do sometimes lose Ryuuji's thought process.

Zekkyo's artwork, like the anime, is based upon Yasu's illustrations from the novels, so the characters look more or less the same from one version of the story to another. Still, I find Zekkyo's versions the best. In the novels and anime, Minori was certainly cute but nothing more -- unless Ryuuji has a moe fetish, it's hard to see why he was so hot for her. The manga, however, actually makes her look sexy, although I can't point to any changes Zekkyo made to the design to achieve this. Taiga, likewise, looks just like her novel and anime depictions, but Zekkyo makes her more expressive -- not that she couldn't rip your heart out in the anime, but in the manga she seems to have a lot more depth.

The guys differ a lot more in their design. In the anime, Kitamura came off looking like a Politburo member, making it rather difficult to believe that Taiga and Kihara were both crushing on him. Zekkyo's version is simultaneously geekier and cuter, and the way he acts around girls makes it believable that they want to take him home and corrupt him. The difference in Ryuuji is even more profound. Yasu's illustrations never really captured Takemiya's description, and the anime made him way too nice looking -- if it weren't for the scenes early on where people fall all over themselves not to piss him off, you wouldn't know he's supposed to be intimidating. The manga alone captures Ryuuji's fierce features and makes him look like a guy you'd run from if you saw him on an empty street at night.

The one peculiarity I find with the manga is the structure. This first volume only makes it through about 2/3 of the novel, and the point it stops at serves as little more than a minor cliffhanger. If the story had continued a few more pages, it would've reached a more fitting end point, with Taiga and Ryuuji seemingly defeated in their quests. This stopping point also means that the next volume will finish up the first book and then have to start on the Ami-chan arc, which will make for a disjointed story -- imagine Star Wars ending before the Battle of Yavin, and then a second film that covers the Death Star attack through to Han rescuing Luke on Hoth. Not a very solid structure, is it?

Of all the ways for two characters to be brought together being united in an oblivious attempt to pursue other romantic interests is possibly one of my favourites. I'll help you with you're crush, if you help me with mine! Hijinx ensue!!

I think this first volume of Toradora is a great jumping off point. It sets up the characters personalities so perfectly that you just know this is going to be good. Our two leads, Takasu Ryuuji and Aisaka Taiga, may not not seem like a good fit at first, but you can feel their chemistry almost automaticly. I expect tons of adorableness is to come from these two! If you've read or watched anything Haruhi Suzumiya related then this couple is going to feel very familiar. The kind, domestic guy, that works hard and has trouble with girls, paired with the loud, hot tempered girl, who is used to getting what she wants, but is ultimately just a huge spaz. What differs these two series is very important as the similarities stop with the characters. Haruhi Suzumiya is supernatural, science fiction, fantasy focused and Toradora is a romantic comedy romp, but the similarities are striking enough that cross recommendation is probably bound to happen.

I'm just super enthusiastic about reading the next volume. This is the first manga volume one I've read in a while that I've liked without coming away with a ton of complaints. You've got my attention Toradora!

The Most Pretentious Review of Toradora, Vol.1 Ever Written (with apologies to William Blake)

Taiga, Taiga, violent sprite,
Existence a tsundere delight,
Will classmate with Yakuza eye,
Come to love thy fearful symmetry?

Your home life is a touch obscene,
You cannot cook, you cannot clean,
The both of you seem to aspire,
The hearts of others to acquire.

And I love the plotting (and the art),
And the thawing of your icy heart.
I appreciate the many subtle ways,
Ryuuji helps you through your days.

Yes, you can surely be a pain,
But there are reasons to explain,
A defensive girl with cutting word,
Who wields a giant wooden sword.

When the plot gets into motion,
It causes quite a huge commotion,
Will Ryuuji’s plans, from what we see,
All end in massive calamity?

Taiga, Taiga, burning bright,
Please note you don’t have any height.
I think this is my final word,
Wait, there’s also a fattened bird.

It was meh. I thought I would like it a lot more than I did.

It's super Tsundere, and sadly, there was nothing I saw to like about Taiga, the tsundere rep. I found her more annoying than anything else.

A friend had suggested I watch the anime. Instead, I read the manga. Perhaps I should've taken my friend's suggestion more literally.

Not as cute as the anime is.
A lot slower too.
Lots of use of what people would now consider ableist slurs but it was like 2012. Maybe the translators would make different decisions based on the Japanese now. I hope so.
There’s some elements that don’t sit well with me, which again seem like potential translation issues but without checking the Rae’s I can’t be sure
The fact that Ryuuji’s mum is heavily sexualised isn’t my fave but I also like that he just takes care of her and helps her out, even though I don’t love depictions of inept parents his mum is only 32 with a 16 yo son soooo like she’s kind of had to figure life out with a kid the whole time. She’s allowed to be a mess and he never judges her for it.

I will continue to manga only because I would like more of toradora since I love the anime. If it isn’t as good though I’ll just pretend it didn’t exist lol.
Another TBR book finally down though after sitting on this list for years.

Decent adaptation of the anime but sadly lacking the craziness that made it fun. The character’s overreactions kind of fall flat on paper and I realized the excellent japanese dubbing added a lot of fun to the anime but here it doesn’t show.

If Taiga's tsundere personality is more or less correctly portrayed, Yusaku’s and mainly Minorin’s left the building with Elvis. I mean, the first time you see Minorin in the anime you understand she’s half bonkers and a walking time bomb. Here she just seems a bit hyperactive. For their part, Yusaku’s eccentricities are nowhere to be seen.

So, what to say?
If you haven’t seen the anime it’s a decently funny rom-com series, give it a try.
If you have, you might want to stay on the good impression it probably left you.

This is one of those slice of life books. The MC is in love with a girl. The main protagonist is also in love with the same girl. The both of them are rivals for this one girls affection. But they also start helping each other out. Also, the MC is a guy that has an evil look, but has a really soft heart so he is often misunderstood. The main protagonist/other MC is a tsundre lady. With this mix you can see how things go from strange to wierd in like .5 seconds. Nothing really new to see here. I wont be getting the rest of the series.

Toradora is one of my favorite anime and is the story that helped me branch out from action/shonen only. I have been wanting to read this manga for a while now and have finally pulled the trigger. The art was good and the story immediately starts off and gets me re-invested in the characters. Very excited to move on to volume 2.

I'm not a huge fan of romance, but whether it's the show, novel, or in this case comic, Toradora does a great job of making you care about its love quadrilateral. I wish someone would cook for me like Ryuuji does 😂
