UPDATED! Contains a final chapter written in 2022, where the author shares how she's doing now, after 14 years with the Coimbra Protocol.
"The Coimbra Protocol relies on doses of vitamin D that range from 40,000 IU to 200,000 IU per day."
Mounting scientific evidence clearly shows that vitamin D has a powerful effect on autoimmune diseases, yet most doctors continue to prescribe no more than 1,000 IU or 2,000 IU a day to patients that suffer from such conditions.
In this book, Ana Claudia Domene describes her experience with multiple sclerosis and the treatment that has radically eased her symptoms, allowed her to discontinue all conventional medications, and restored her health.
Developed by Dr. Cicero Galli Coimbra, a neurologist practicing in São Paulo, Brazil, the Coimbra Protocol is a therapeutic approach that relies on high doses of vitamin D to halt the misguided attacks of the immune system, and it has enabled thousands of patients around the world to keep their autoimmune diseases in permanent remission.
I was so happy to find this book with what appeared to be a great alternative treatment for MS. I was excited to hear how incredible vitamin D was in its healing effects on the immune system when taken in mega doses.... but where was all the supporting medical research from others also supporting this? Very disappointed.
I picked up this book a couple months after being diagnosed with MS, and being told by the Neuro that how I felt at the time of diagnosis would be how I would feel for the rest of my life. Well, I don't like to take 'no' for an answer and I don't like being told what I can and cannot do. My mother always said I was too independent. This book gives me incredible hope! I know it's just one person's story, but she actually included testimonials from several different people who have gotten on the Coimbra Protocol (super high doses of Vitamin D, and no other meds or strict diet) and have all reversed their symptoms and decreased or even completely been healed from the lesions on their spinal cord. People who have been on the protocol for 8, 10, 13 years....I realize of course that this is not a medical journal and it's independently published, which means I can't just take it as is. If people have died of toxic intake of Vitamin D3 trying to follow this plan, I could see why she might not divulge that info in her book.
The Coimbra Protocol is not just for MS. It's been used to successfully treat several different types of auto-immune disorders. I am going to look further into this, as I have always been deficient in D, a state which the medical community is starting to see can be a surefire predisposition to develop MS. This book looks to be well resourced and cited, but I haven't taken the time yet to look up all the studies she referenced. I'm just praying I get a doc and neuro who have heard of this and are willing to let me try it. Great read and worth talking to your doc about if you suffer from an AID.
