Learning from life and death

A great book. Great story, characters and power development. Though this book is not as action packed as the last book it is full or revelations and some resolutions.

I like how Yanko is developing in this story. Yes he missed out on going to school, but he is being learning as he goes growing stronger surviving life and death situations. He even meets his legendary/infamous mother. It is interesting how the meeting changes both of them as well as giving Yanko insight to his powers fro. One of the most powerful battle mages of all time. I also like the fact that Yanko uses a move he saw someone else use now that he has more of an understanding of the science behind it.

Though I said their is not as much action in this book compared to the first book but there is still quite a bit. Though I prefer the martial arts action over magic or mental sciences I definitely understand why this book concentrates on that aspect in this book.

A great continuation of the story I can't wait to see what happen next. This series is full of interesting possibilities. Sword, sorcery, science and truly funny moments with great and witty dialogue this series book has it all.

It feels like it's been forever since I read Warrior Mage even though it was only released last year, so I was over the moon the minute I had Snake Heart in my grubby little hands. It is so, so good, and I have the all-nighter-induced eyebags to prove it. I enjoyed the first book, but this one really knocked it out of the ballpark - I feel like it's really found its groove and rediscovered the things I loved best about the Emperor's Edge series (set in the same universe). The banter that I felt keenly the absence of in the first book is here, Yanko's growing stronger by the page as a protagonist and really coming into his own as a mage, the character conflicts and relationships are more fleshed out (there's one heck of a fractured mother/son relationship here which makes for interesting reading) and we finally know more about Dak. Even Arayevo stops annoying me, which is quite possibly one of the biggest improvements from book 1.

Now that most of the setup is out of the way and the main players have gathered, the story really takes off in Snake Heart. Yanko & Co. now know what they must search for in order to find the lost island of the Kyattese... the problem is that it appears every other nation wants to find it as well. Cue island-hopping adventures as Yanko chases down the lodestone, engages in sea battles with pirates and enemy mages alike and avoids a few more attempts on his life. Just another day at the office. If you wanted to see more magic use and exploration of mage powers in the first book, as I did, you'll find it here in spades.

I didn't have strong feelings about Yanko as a protagonist prior to Snake Heart, although I sympathized with his plight and insecurities. The poor guy was just so out of his comfort zone after a rather sheltered childhood, with no real idea of what he's doing or how to go about his mission. He'd barely even had proper training as a mage! In the previous stories, the naive Yanko had a tendency to see everything in black or white and believe everything he was told; in Snake Heart, Yanko is forced to change the way he looked at everything, from the way he viewed Arayevo through rose-coloured glasses to his blind faith in the dictates of his Nurian elders. Meeting his mother and finding out that she might not be the cold-blooded fiend he'd judged her to be based on her reputation is the catalyst that push Yanko to mature as a person and grow in confidence.

For starters, he works up enough courage to be more upfront in his dealings with Dak, which leads to a strengthening of their reluctant partnership now that he can stop second-guessing Dak's every action. Yanko's familiarity with Lakeo grows as well, which means we have the two of them exchanging some of the best back-and-forth banter in the book (reminiscent of Maldynado and Books' bickering in the EE series) - all in all, the group feel much more like a team now that Yanko is opening up more to them. More importantly, Yanko's interactions with Snake Heart forces him to make some difficult decisions about who commands his loyalty and also take some real steps towards harnessing his evidently vast potential as a mage. Instead of wasting his time thinking about how fireballs aren't his specialty, Yanko starts to realize that his talent for earth and mind magic can produce equally devastating results. Not so pleasant for Yanko, but absolutely great for me - it brings back the old feeling of anticipation when I watched Harry Potter learn and excel at new spells, or when Aang mastered the bending of elements and astounded his companions with his power.

As for the other characters, we get to know Dak a little better as someone who isn't just Rias' efficient but outwardly emotionless relative; it's interesting to find that he has his internal conflicts regarding his mission to deal with as well. Lakeo doesn't get much to do here, but Arayevo is finally bearable - she's less selfish, inconsiderate and self-centered here, perhaps because she's finally realized there are more important things than her having fun. And thanks to Yanko manning up regarding his feelings, he finally takes the step I'd hoped for since the Sword and Salt short stories: THANK GOD, and good luck, Yanko. The one side character that I really hope to see much more of, though, is Snake Heart. Controversial and morally ambiguous she may be, but her brief time with Yanko is the highlight of the book. Somewhere in a little corner of my heart, I'm hoping book 3 will see the two of them mend their fences and work together more.

With the promise of Turgonia being the upcoming destination in the next book, can I also hope for a cameo appearance a certain assassin and his partner, the veteran schemer?

I received a free ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Yanko's bildungsroman continues. Yanko, his one-eyed 'bodyguard' Dak, light-fingered Lakeo and Arayevo (Yanko's former babysitter and current subject of his unrequited love) are travelling with a bunch of pirates looking for an island where a former museum thief left his hoard of stolen artifacts, including a lodestone which is rumoured to lead the way to a forgotten land. Yanks has defeated the warrior mage Sun Dragon with the assistance of a kraken but Yanko is scared that Sun Dragon will catch up with the pirates and try to kill him again. Although Sun Dragon is not a current threat, Yanko's mother the warrior mage Snake Heart Pey Lu is leading a rival group of pirates in search of the treasure. Oh, and if that isn't enough, Sun Dragon has sent a mage hunter assassin to kill Yanko!

Lindsay Buroker has written another great novel in this series. Yanko is such a likeable character in his desire to do the right thing and not harm others, he even shies away from killing the assassin that tried to kill him! He feels inadequate against the magic skills of Pey Lu and Sun Dragon, the fighting skills of Dak and Lakeo, heck he even feels inadequate compared to Arayevo. But the reader knows that Yanko is destined for better things, he just needs to grow into his magic.

In this book Yanko also gets the chance to speak with his mother and find out more about why she left her husband and children to become a pirate. He also finds out who Dak really is (it's a doozy).

Whereas in the last book we had a kraken, in this book we have magical constructs, killer kelp, lost continents, a flugnugstica, fireballs, pirates, a magical rock and TWO warrior mages. This series reminds of some of my favourite series: the Narnia books and David Edding's Belgariad, Can't wait for the next book!

Beware, there's sort of a cliff-hanger.

Holy, that ending. Yes, I expected something to happen. BUT wow, Buroker threw us everything from magical continents, lava murders of questionably evil Sun Dragons, reckless birds, and jail cells. I totally didn't expect the continent part to actually happen in this book. (Okay, it's not actually magical, but I won't spoil what I meant.) But I'm glad it did. At least the lodestone wasn't just a macguffin.

And reading that ending reminds me again why I'm still reading - the books have a good blend of action, mystery, and character development. On the romance, yes, sorry Yanko, that wasn't going to happen, but at least she let you down slowly and kindly. Yanko deserves someone who likes him back.

Onto the next one, a more comprehensive review for this another time (especially about Yanko's mother, of which this instalment is eponymously named).

Good, but a bit on the slow side toward the end

Enjoyed this second volume in the "Chains or Honor" series. There were many good moments in this second volume, not least being the parrot popping every so often to remind us how much this series is about pirates :D With that said, I thought the meeting with the mom was a bit underwhelming, and fairly flat overall. Same goes with some of the later interactions with Sun Dragon. However, the assassin character is intriguing enough that some good stuff might come out of it in the subsequent volumes. Fingers crossed.

Snake Heart is my favorite fiction book so far in 2016. I know that the year is still young but I have already read a LOT of books. I have definitely read a huge number of books between Warrior Mage, the first book in the Chains of Honor series, and Snake Heart. Reading Snake Heart reminded me that I truly love the Chains of Honor series; possibly more than any other series in Lindsay Buroker's fantastic collection of books. Since I keep coming back over and over again to read Buroker’s books that says a lot. I love her world building and her characterizations. Buroker also has a great sense of humor (I think that I say this in every review).

As opposed to the Emperor’s Edge series, which exists in the same world but who’s heroes are Turgonian we are given Nurian heroes in the Chains of Honor series. It is hard to pick a favorite side when you love both sets of characters but since I claimed this as the series that I like most I guess that this means that I am on team Nuria. Yikes… flashback to the days of Twilight.

There are so many great characters to love. I can usually dial down on my favorite but there are a few extras that I have had to give a nod too as well.

Kei is back, and will remain my favorite as long as he remains within the pages of a story. I’m going to state that what Hemingway has to say in the quote below should also apply to parrots.

“When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.”
― Ernest Hemingway, Death in the Afternoon

Dak comes in second. He may be scarred by battle and the happenings in his life, which are just beginning to get fleshed out for us it is evident that there is much more to him than his warrior abilities and the wounds of his past. He is wise and he shows himself a loyal friend even though his goals are often in direct competition with Yankos. Dak is a character that I would enjoy getting to know better. I hope that he is expanded upon more in book three.

In my review of Warrior Mage I mentioned that I wanted to get more of Pey Lu, Yanko’s pirate/mage mother who left Yanko and his family behind when Yanko was vey young. We definitely learned more about her and saw her in action in Snake Heart. I am craving more though. My hopes are on book three for a greater chance to know what makes her tick as well.

Snake Heart is a win win for me and the ending left me desiring more. It’s a long wait until the fall for book three but it is worth waiting for.

Ugh

I don't know what people on Goodreads are thinking, giving this a 4.37 but thanks for wasting my time. I put up with the first book largely because the reviews for the next 3 in the series were so good. But this is essentially the same book, if not worse.

Yanko is still the most boring character imaginable, constantly worrying if the bloodthirsty cutthroats actively trying to kill him might have stubbed their toes while he runs from them. I stopped reading at about 100 pages and I think 60 of them were about him boy-scouting it up.

He's also a complete child. I get that he's 18 but he believes himself to be "in love" with Arayevo this entire series thus far. But pretty much everything she does or says he disagrees with and wants her to change. He's in love with the idea of her and it's just annoying to constantly hear about. Maybe that would get resolved in the end but it's just so annoying. I don't know how a woman wrote something like this.

Anyway, before I rail into this book too much, I'll wrap it up. The book is boring, the characters are bland, and I struggled for 5 days to read 100 pages that I would normally read in 2 days. Take from that what you will.

I was so excited to find out that the next book in this series was out. I adore the honorable, nice guy hero in this series. Yanko is coming into his own in this novel and is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

I really love Yanko. He is such a good guy. He tries so hard to be honorable. He tries to save lives even the lives of his enemies. He is able to laugh at his own shortcomings. His companions are interesting and the parrot who adopted him is hilarious.

Chasing down a long missing stone that could point to a longer missing uninhabited piece of earth, is what Yanko's quest turns into.
Bit along the way his enemies are strayed against him.
First might be Fak, the Turgonian. Or not?
Then there is his mother, the pirate queen who seems to be equally interested to obtain that "rock"
And there is the white clad young wizard huntress equally determined to remove his head somehow.
And let's not forget another rather irate wizzard called Sun Dragon, who thinks Yanko insulted him, suffering his own deletions of grandeur.
Life has turned rather precarious for Yanko!
Nail biting also becomes rather a habit for the reader as you start nearing the end of Snake Heart.
Enjoy.

Exciting

If you enjoyed the first book, the second has as much action and adventure. It also delves into the side characters a little more, though at the cost of some of the others. We learn more of Dak, but Lakeo and Aryovelo become one dimensional, even Yanko forgets about Lakeo often. Also, took a star rating off for the cliffhangers. Neither book is a satisfying read on it's own, baiting readers to buy the next installment with obvious "how will the hero's live this time???" endings.

There's something about this that feels even more YA-ish than the previous stories. I think it's a combination of things, mostly centered around people liking and wanting to work with Yanko more than it seems that they should. Beyond that, the romantic aspects feel a little juvenile in it, Arayevo seems a bit disconnected from reality, and Sun Dragon is just a bit too chatty and villainous to be completely believable. That said, it's stil pretty easy to root for our protagonist and it's a really good adventure story, with plenty of exciting action.

Lots of Adventure!!

Yanko is captured by Snake Heart, his mother, will she hurt him? How should Yanko feel about his mother a black hearted pirate? What will happen now. Where is Dak and Yanko's friends, Lakeo and Arayevo? Will Sun Dragon and the mage hunter find Yanko? Will Yanko and friends find the lost continent? Read the book to answer these questions and more. You won't be disappointed.

Another fun adventure, this one full of pirate ships and island mysteries. I listened to part of it in Audiable and I didn't love the narrator, but only because his voice - while pleasant in its own way - didn't seem to suit the characters very well. It also probably didn't help that his voices were so extremely different than the mental ones my brain had already applied to the characters in the first book.

The story keeps getting better!

In book 2 of the Chains or Honor series, Yanko gets to deal with some mommy issues. He and his cohorts are being pursued by parties from 3 nations as well as independent pirates led by his mother. Depending on who you ask, he's either a traitor, a thief, a murderer, or an ungrateful son. Can it get any worse? Read it and see...

Excellent!

A thoughtful followup to the first book with characters and a storyline that continues to get richer and richer. A deep, thoughtful storyline that had twisted but did not overly complicate, is compounded with complex characters. Can't wait to see what book 3 had in store!
