The Paramedic's Angel is a slightly stronger follow up to the first novel in this series, with more of a focus on plot building and less on the paramedic procedural aspects. It does however fall foul of several of the issues I had with the first book, and perhaps adds one or two new issues.

The dialogue still felt very stiff and I struggled to really engage with the characters because of it. I can't put my finger on exactly what is wrong, but it reads very strangely and feels unnatural and forced. I also struggled more with the characters in this novel; whilst the lead characters are well developed, the characters aligned with the Cause seem to have really flimsy motivations for their frankly appalling behaviour. I'd have liked to see more depth and thought gone into what is pushing these individuals into the Cause and driving their hatred for the Unnaturals. I also felt that whilst some of the side characters such as James are developed well, others were left as more like cardboard cut-outs.

More irritatingly, the ending of this was just as disappointing as the ending to the first novel. It's not quite as large of a cliffhanger, but it still felt unfinished. I suspect the first three books are really one full novel that has been padded out to make three long novella's. I can't be confident of that without reading the third novel, but it wouldn't surprise me to find many of the loose threads are resolved and the ending more complete. To my mind, that is a sign that a decent editing process and a single book would have been a far better option here.

That said, I still enjoyed the urban fantasy world on offer here and the medical callouts that Dean goes on with his colleague. Davis incorporates real medicine into his fantasy setting well. I like the variety of characters on offer here; from zombies, to vampires, werewolves, dryads and many more. I just feel like there are more flaws than upsides here; the writing style, particularly the dialogue, needs work, the bad guys need to be fleshed out rather than comic book cartoon figures, the side characters need to be fully fleshed out and the books need to actually finish a narrative arc instead of dropping on a cliff-hanger and requiring you to pick up the next book.

I'll likely go for the third, if only to see if I'm right about the narrative arc being that of one book split into three. I'm not sure I'll go much further though as there are too many recurring issues.

This is a cool concept, but I'm just not getting sucked in the way I hoped I would. Part of it is the continued under use of contractions in the dialog. Especially in the audio book, the characters end up sounding very stiff, to the point that it's distracting.

"The Paramedics Angel" is another good installment in the Extreme Medical Services series. This read features the budding relationship between newbie paramedic, Dean and his new girlfriend, the Eldara, Ashley.

The others is a group of human set on the idea of attacking the unusual of the city. After a former paramedic, Zach, sought and failed to recruit Dean, he and his organization are going scrutinizing associates of Zach including Gibbie the vamp and the zombie chef. If that us not enough, Dean is concerned that Ashley will be next. However, Ashley is not without skills and shares her vision that Dean and James are the key to this problem and they need to start getting along.

There are some harrowing moments, lots of twists and turns but what this series continues to lack is emotional depth. The emotions are low, the passion in the relationships is dialed down to tepid making the overall story line less than what it has the potential to be. The author needs to turn up the heat and passion if they truly want the reader to 'love' rather than 'like' the series. I'm just sayin.'

I loved Jamie Davis' "Extreme Medical Services" . The emergency medical procedures were always interesting and well paced and they mixed well with the story of Dean, a new paramedic on probation learning to deal with his new knowledge of "Unusuals" living among humans and his role of treating them.

The second book, "The Paramedic's Angel" is lighter on the procedure, and heavier on well plotted story, as the Unusuals face a major threat in a group of humans led by Dean's supervisor Brynne's old partner Zach, who want to expose the Unusuals as monsters and a threat to society .

By far the best part of this book is Dean's relationship with ER nurse Ashley, who is in actual fact an Eldara Sister (basically the oldest and highest rank of angel).

Jamie Davis writes relationships in a very moving and often emotional manner. He tends to focus on the warmth and comfort in love , the conversations, and the smaller nuances that make a strong relationship. Dean is insecure, confused and out of sorts and with very good reason, yet inherently a good person. Ashley, while "needing" Dean to fulfill a prophecy which I will not give away, seems to genuinely care for him, acts as his rock, and brightens his world, while showing strength and grace in character. Never does she make him feel used or like her affections are ingenuine. Davis tends not to bring out immature pining in his characters, nor does he go for the cheap thrills often found in fantasy with a romantic subplot. Instead he focuses on the powerful and often cathartic feeling of being alone in the world and finding an angel.

A lot more happens in this book. As always with a Jamie Davis book it's 200 pages are stacked with excellent action , interesting characters, plot twists and raised stakes, but for me, Dean and Ashley made me love this book. Can't wait for book 3

The Story Continues.....

The evil conditions "the Cause" continues to create around town between the humans and the unusual scare some of the unusual patients from calling the Paramedics for help. Gabby, the Vampire, whose used their services several times, decided he wants to help his fellow unusual, by becoming a first responder. He happens to be at the right place, at the right time, and he does a lot to help a young girl who has a bad cut. When Dean and his boss arrive and discover what condition the girl is in, they are shocked, but realize Gibby is serious about helping. Brynne decides to do something about it, and they get permission to teach Gibby and a handful of other Unusuals who are willing to put the time into earning their Certification. Dean and Brynne teach the classes at Station No. 191, instead of the academy, because of the problems that would cause, especially with Mike being the head instructor, and the possibility of his involvement with "the Cause".
Dean learn more about Ashley, being an Eldara, when they go away for a relaxing weekend, and have anything but!
They come home to find more of a mess than when there had been before they left, and learned they were even more in danger than before. So they had to move into James' building to live, until things got settled with the Cause.
At the end of the book, we see who Mike is actually working with, who is running the show. We haven't heard his name before, but find out something quite interesting about him.......he's a......

This was first published on my blog " Lecture toute une Aventure"

My opinion:
This isn't a standalone at all so you must have read book 1 minimum , the prequel could also be read before but it also works after as we do get glimpse of event told in this book that makes us want to read it if we haven't do so yet but still we are not lacking anything if we wait longer.
In fact, this story start just were book 1 stopped so we are immediately in the action and that's great, even better if read back to back.

In this instalment we do get some medical actions ( still some big ones), some sweet moments even, but less than in book 1 as we focus on the actual threat and we get to see how it could be even worse and deep. On the plus side we do learn more about unusual as well as we are discovering about the Eldara and learning with Dean, who made his choice.

This story immerses us more into the winding of the system and what is happening behind the scenes with some informations putting us on edge about what is coming. This time the ending is less abrupt since we are not in the middle of an intervention but it still let us on edge for the next one in the series. I do prefer that to an abrupt cliffhanger.

I really liked this second book and want more.

Just as good as the first book in the series and maybe a little better.

In this book, we begin to learn that someone is sabotaging the EMT service and setting up Unusuals for being killed. They believe in "the cause" and feel that Unusuals are Monsters and not people or worthy of living.

Most of the book dealt with the budding romance between Dean and Ashley (an Eldara which is what we would call and Angel.) There are several medical service calls that once again prove the author's familiarity with the medical field and the EMT field in particular.

The entire cast of characters from the first book are here Brynne, Dean, Tammy, Bill, James( the vampire boss) Mike, Zach, Rebecca, Daisy (the waitress), Freddy (a zombie chef), Gibbie (a vampire who wants to be an EMT), and Kristoff (a Djinn or Genie). In addition, we get to meet other patients like a fairy who gives birth to a baby girl, a dryad, and a few others.

I will say that for a supernatural book it is very entertaining with a good plot and likable (for the most part) characters.

Now I will buy book 3 and maybe book 4 though I see there is also a book 0.5. :)

an exemplary paranormal urban fantasy mystery series

This is an exceptional and entertaining paranormal urban fantasy mystery series. A great cast of characters in a unique and entertaining storyline. A paramedic unit in a metropolitan area that deals with strictly supernaturals and paranormal. A cabal of people trying to expose the supernatural world and drive them out. a group of paramedics and their friends trying to stop it. Vampires werewolves fairies and angel and many other different types of paranormal live among us. For the most part they just live their lies go to work and do their thing just like the rest of us. Yet there’s some out there they want to expose them and drive them out. Follow the adventure of Dean and his partner and the rest of the EMS unusual unit as they fight to take care of the supernatural population. Forces are at work trying to destroy that capability and expose the paranormal to the world. Action packed with lots of mystery lots of twist and turns in great characters.

The story picked up directly after the events in book 1 no downtime had to be filled in.

I liked the story but I found that the author was very to the point about what was going on with no real subterfuge or suspense. Even the reveal that Mike was on the side of The Cause was very bluntly figured out.

In the first book, the author displayed their knowledge of the medical field so I don't think that they needed to add as much of the step-by-step field guide in the second book and all the medical stops actually pulled away from the story rather than enhancing it.

The relationship was fleshed out, but it wasn't given as much attention as I thought it would be, considering the book is supposed to be about his 'angel'.

I still believe that this would make a good tv show.

This is insanity! So little is being done and exposed, yet the story wasn't boring as The Cause was making a lot of problems. It all centers on Dean which is confusing as to why. Then that epilogue with whomever Artur is and what he has against Ashley and James. I'm so curious to see what is going to happen. Mike is an absolute idiot. He got butthurt because Brynne fell for James. Like why was it his place at all to judge or get upset? I feel that way about Dean, but he's starting to get over his crap. And Ashley is a huge help and I love how understanding she is. There is so much happening in the background, yet nothing is coming forward. I know it's only book 2 but I'm getting impatient to see how all this plays out.

I love this series so much. I love how the medical side of things and life on an ambulance is factual and very close to true life….and I would know since I am a paramedic. Jamie Davis does a great job of taking his medical knowledge and weaving fantasy through it to make a truly unique series. This book also added some growing tension in Elk City and the ending has a bit of a cliffhanger. This book also had some suggestive spice to it, but nothing too scandalous (I actually just recommended this series to my 13 year old son that wants to be a paramedic….so I would give it a MAYBE PG-13 level). I definitely recommend this book and series to anyone that enjoys fantasy books, especially if they are looking for a different spin on it!

The second iteration of the Extreme Paramedic Service series continues where Dean juggles between a group of nut cases off to harm the Unusual community he treats, his pervasive feelings of disgust regarding coworker Brynne’s boyfriend James just because he is a vampire who occasionally drink her blood, and a supernatural love interest of his own with an angel or Eldara named Ashley who becomes attracted to him because he was an open minded healer whose decisions could stall good or bad for the city.
Our favorite sidekick characters from book one return. Freddy the zombie continues cooking meals that hopefully don’t have severed fingers for the paramedics and the always hyperactive vampire Gibbie buys a creepy stalkerish white van and tries to pretend to be a paramedic which causes a couple awkward situations.
The book also has a few antagonists who are trying to lure Dean into their cause. It will be up to him to decide which side he is on. While I do feel like the ending was very… anticlimactic (I sincerely suggest buying the 3 book boxset like I did and consider all 3 books to be sort of meshed into 1 big story instead of three parts), I continue to really enjoy how the book goes from here.

Great story! HORRIBLE FORMAT

I am giving this 3 stars because of the way the author has opted to sell chapters of one novel as separate books. At best, they could be considered novellas, but clearly break at the end of a chapter. No, that does not constitute a book “series.” Yes, that is a way of squeezing more money out of readers. This second installment took about 75 minutes to read. I won’t be reading any other “series” by this author, and if the price continues to increase for each successive chunk of chapters, I am done. This is unfortunate because the story has a fresh approach to a plot line sorely overdone in paranormal fiction.

The second in the series, this is a nice follow up to Paramedic Dean’s story. This time he is now involved with an angel, aka an Eldara, who is the ER nurse Ashley. When they are threatened by members of The Cause, who want to rid Elk City of all Unusuals, they move to an apartment building owned by James the vampire leader. While I enjoy all the medical lingo, the author’s writing is stiff and unnatural sounding. I was ready to be done with this book, and don’t plan to read any more of the series.

Great concept, terrible execution. I was hoping the writing of the first book would improve but instead it got worse. The dialogue is stilted (why does no one use "it's" or "we're" or any other common speaking contraction?) and I swear 60% of the non dialogue sentences start with "He" ("He rolled out of bed. He walked over to the window. He looked out at the cars in the street." The other five sentences in that paragraph also started with "He.") I wanted so much more from this story than the writing was capable of giving me.

And the mystery heats up!

Who did it? We know why. Zach made a very bad decision. Dean can't think straight. James will help but someone wants his job too. And Freddy no fingers keeps cooking away. What's next? Ashley will stand by her man no matter what. Will someone else die? Will it all be wiped away? Will Dean go to jail? Next book will keep you on the edge. Let's get to reading!!

READ THIS STAT!

Why should you read this book? Because it's GREAT fun. I've quite enjoyed the creativity of the books in this series. The stories blend monsters and myths with medical cases and mysteries and even throw in a little romance. There's something for everyone to enjoy. I am not fond of the cliffhanger endings, but the story itself keeps my attention. If you must miss a good tale this, year don't let it be this one.

STICK with iT. It starts a little slow ..the author loves medical lingo which I love but others may take a bit to get into. Im not going to lie by the end of the First book I was on the fence about continuing the series. I started BOOK 2 of the Series ..first have still slow but by the end of 2nd Book the storyline started getting good..the books just got better and better as the series add another book.
I will give the Whole SERIEs a solid 3.9🌟. 😍.

Dean is learning all about good vs evil as he meets someone new and discovers someone he trusted could be batting for the wrong side. Dean is caught in the middle and is relying on his co-workers and friends to help him through is tough choices. He must learn to make amends and befriend James, the Vampire, while still staying true to himself. Love is on the horizon and so is danger, I can't wait to see what happens to Dean and how he figures it all out.

Engrossing read!

I just started this series. I read the first two books in a day and a half. I couldn't put it down. Very well wrote. The pace is fast. I like how the author starts you on a journey quickly! The characters are intense and the paramedic action is just technical enough but not over the top so the reader gets lost in medical lingo! The only issue is, the books are too short!

The saga continues. Dean is a human paramedic and he’s patients are unusuals. Vampires, the undead, fairies and so many more! He ends up having to choose between sides in battle he doesn’t want to be a part of.
This is a series of books so you could read this by itself but it may confuse you. Plus reading them in order gives more backstory to the characters. I just bought book 3!

Just as great as the first book, bring on more!

I loved that this book took a turn from the original and has more of a romance built in. It brought a lot of character development. It still had all the supernatural and medical stuff from the first, but with more. I can’t wait to see where the series goes!

The Cause!!

I rated this book a "5" because I think it is a well written story. The medical parts were written realistically and the patients are unique. the Cause is doing its part causing the general fear among the Unusuals and trouble is brewing. Can't wait for the next book in this series. You don't want to miss it.

I like it but it’s just dragging a bit. Some of the characters need more depth. Things are left to the readers imagination more than I would like when we are still in the beginning stages of a series. I think what I want is more understanding of why certain characters do what they do. I will read at least one or two more because I really do want to know what happens.

Good read

I enjoyed reading this book. The story and characters are interesting. I like urban fantasy and this is a slightly different take on the... normal? person in the modern supernatural world. I like the clinical/ procedural side to the paramedic angle. I plan to reac the next book to find out what hairball to Dean and his friends next.

Very original

I am really enjoying this very original series. I haven't read very many books with these types of "Unusuals" but to me, this is all just the coolest idea. I especially like the realness and accuracy of the medical aspect.

I would absolutely recommend this mostly clean series! I have already downloaded the rest!!!

Excellent paranormal read!

This is a great series that accurately portrays the medical decisions made by EMTs and paramedics. The unusual situation is the type of patients treated. That’s where the paranormal comes into play. There is a bit of repetition but it didn’t really effect the enjoyment I had while reading. I’m looking forward to book 3.

There are times we all could use an angel looking out for us. Dean really needs one. He's good as a paramedic, but someone doesn't like his patients. That creates great difficulties for him.

Tag along with Dean as we see the interesting things that can happen when your patients are Unusual. It certainly present complications in their treatment.

I've now read the first two books and while I like the premise of them they tend to drag for me. I find myself swiping my Kindle really fast til I get to some meat of the story. I will probably read the third installment even though I swore I was done.
