TRUST NO ONE

Cassidy DiRocco knows the dark side intimately—as a crime reporter in New York City, she sees it every day. But since she discovered that she’s a night blood, her power and potential has led the dark right to her doorway. With her brother missing and no one remembering he exists, she makes a deal with Dominic Lysander, the fascinating master vampire of New York, to find him.

Dominic needs the help of Bex, another master vampire, to keep peace in the city, so he sends Cassidy to a remote, woodsy town upstate to convince her—assuming she survives long enough. A series of vicious “animal attacks” after dark tells Cassidy there’s more to Bex and her coven than anyone’s saying. That goes double for fellow night blood Ian Walker, the tall, blond animal tracker who’s supposed to be her ally. Walker may be hot-blooded and hard-bodied, but he’s hiding something too. If Cassidy wants the truth, she’ll have to squeeze it out herself… every last drop.

Melody Johnson is the author of the “out of this world” Love Beyond series and the gritty, paranormal romance Night Blood series published by Kensington Publishing/ Lyrical Press. The City Beneath (Night Blood, book 1) was a finalist in the “Cleveland Rocks” and “Fool For Love” contests.

Melody graduated magna cum laude from Lycoming College with her B.A. in creative writing and psychology. Throughout college, she wrote contemporary love stories, but having read and adored the action and dark mystery of vampires her whole life, decided to add her fingerprint to the paranormal genre.

“The vampire sub-genre of paranormal romance has always been one of my favorites to read,” says Melody. “But it was just as important to me to explore the monster within the man as it was to reveal the man within the monster. The juxtaposition of good and evil and all the gray in between that composes a person is just as unique in my vampires as they are my human characters, and because of that, my heroine has more man troubles than she ever bargained for.”

Melody's unique perspective on vampires lends fresh bite to a classic paranormal genre. In addition to a reimagined transformation—the requirement of night blood—vampires have gargoyle-looking, vicious day forms, an orgasmic bite, and as the series progresses to Sweet Last Drop (book 2), a mindless, rampaging, zombie-like breed is introduced. Melody is constantly upping the stakes, and Day Reaper (book 4) is no exception.

Beyond the Next Star is an exciting branch from Melody's paranormal romance roots, keeping the dark grit from her Night Blood Series and taking it to new worlds. Told from the dual perspectives of both human pet and alien owner, Melody's story weaves a slow-burn romance that explores the bonds of love in all its forms, navigating the main characters’ relationship in delicate stages from oblivious ownership to woke, romantic love.

“Reading and writing romance is my life’s passion, but I’m particularly excited to add my voice to the sci-fi romance genre,” says Melody. “This book allowed me to explore the unconventional parameters that constitute home and family, something my heroine was denied in childhood and torn from in adulthood. But as she discovers through her adventure on Lorien, a home isn’t built with a foundation of concrete but of love.”

After moving from her northeast Pennsylvania hometown for some much needed Southern sunshine, Melody now works as a digital media coordinator for Southeast Georgia Health System’s marketing department. When she isn’t working or writing, Melody can be found swimming at the beach, reading at the pool, and exploring her new home in southeast Georgia.

4.5 This is a great newish series, and I am absolutely looking forward (and waiting for) the next novel.

This series is really well written with an erudite, insightful author.

The principle character is truly likable and well defined and is drawn with a good dose of complexity.

The possible love interest becomes ambivalent and definitely not of a passive nature, and the romance plot thickens.

If you're looking for a simple romance here, you won't fine it. There is plenty of action with a good dose of vampire violence and a very light hint of romance to come (or not).

Sweet Last Drop by Melody Johnson
Night Drop series #2. Dark vampire paranormal romance. Should be read in series order.
Cassidy DiRocco is a crime reporter in New York City. She is also a night blood. She’s traveled upstate to find her brother getting help from a few different master vampires, and a fellow night blood. But it’s a dangerous road and she’ll lucky to survive the search.

Politics and power. Who has it and who wants it.
Slow start for me but the tension ramps up. I didn’t like Cassidy getting hurt so often. I’m not a fan of violence and this book has a lot. But I knew that going in it was a dark vampire power grab. It doesn’t fail in that respect.
Minor cliffhanger at the end.
A slightly different twist on vampires. Compelling, bloody and dark with romance turning almost to a triangle between choices.

Sweet Last Drop by Melody Johnson

Enrapturing second book of the Night Blood series! I was totally engrossed in the plot and unraveling of this tale! The story picks up just where it left off in book one.
Cassidy goes to the country, Erin, New York, where Ian Walker lives, hunts vampires, and has secrets he hasn’t yet shared with Cassidy.
Cassidy goes on assignment for her boss at the paper, but even more so, as part of a deal she has struck with Dominic in order to affirm and realign Bex with his coven as he requires her strength as the leveling approaches. In turn, Dominic agreed to search for news of Cassidy’s brother, Nathan.
Relationships become increasingly more complicated and complex with Cassidy, Dominic, and Walker—as well as other influences. More cast joins the story and characters from the previous book join the story with both simplicity and recklessness.
There was so much covered in this book! I was distracted in the beginning because, although it is the second of the series, it explains the backstory of book one in enough depth that it could be read as a stand alone. I do, however, highly recommend reading them in order. The author has a vast vocabulary but often reuses specific wording and phrases.
I’m continuing to book three! The suspense is infectious and begs to be read without pause!

Sweet Last Drop pulled me in with its mix of mystery and romance, keeping me curious about what would happen next. The characters felt real, and their struggles made me root for them, even when things got complicated. If you’re into paranormal stories with a bit of suspense, this one is worth checking out!

Sweet Last Drop,  Melody Johnson

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, Fantasy and Sci-fi

I’d somehow missed book one but it’s only 83p so I bought and read that first, then then just has to see what;’s next so its was Click Request and a hurrah when I got this one.

I love Cassidy’s character, she’s very moral and determined to do what’s right but she’s practical and when in the last book she learned about vampires she didn’t like the covering up of murders, but understood the need, that it would prevent far more even though her journalistic roots were shouting Publish and Be Damned – hiding the truth goes against everything she’s built her career on but she reluctantly accepts it has to be done.
Once her eyes were opened to the other world living side by side with hers, there’s no going back, the vampires know of her, they know she’s aware of them and its a thin line to treat to stay alive. She’s lucky in that she’s a Night Blood, one of a few humans whose blood allows them to be transformed to a vampire.

After the fracas and mayhem of the last book she really needs time to recover and that happens to coincide with Dominic needing to cement relations with another master Vampire, Bex. She’s in the area where Walker lives and he’s invited Cassidy to stay with him for a while, to teach her what he knows about being a Night Blood and how to protect herself. She agrees to represent Dominic there to Bex, as his Night Blood if he’ll search for Nathan, her missing brother. He’s disappeared just after the start of the murders in book one and she’s worried. They only have each other, no other family and he doesn’t just go away without contact.
Of course Walker has some ulterior motives, he’s not revealing everything, Dominic always has another motive, its never simple with him, Bex is a complicated person and she’s not revealing all, and to add to the drama the murders seem to have followed Cassidy and she gets embroiled in them once more. So much for her relaxing break with Walker and persuading Bex she wants Dominic as an ally.
Its all systems go, surprise after surprise , murder after murder- at times quite gruesome, these killings are real, bloody, aggressive, visceral. These vampires don’t sparkle, live off animals, look pretty all the time, they treat humans as food, though to stay hidden they rarely actually murder, just dip and sip and a bit a dazzle to make humans think something else happened. Is it a vampire committing the murders though? Cassidy thinks so, but Walker says no and Bex is adamant none of her vampires have killed, she’d know if they did. The police think its some kind of animal at first, but then things get even more complex and Cassidy gets drawn into the heart of things, and faces fighting for her life all over again.

I like Cassidy, but I think she’s got blinkers on as far as Walker is concerned. She’s in two minds about Dominic, sees him as  vampire/not human,  she’s seen him in all forms, not just the handsome polished human facade, but can’t seem to help being attracted to him. Her head though is ruling at the moment and warning her against him, where her heart pulls Walker forward when I think Dominic is the better man of the two. They’re both strong characters, both seem to want Cassidy but both hiding things. Dominic is nearly 500 years old and he didn’t get to that age by spilling all to a pretty face so I kind of understand, he’s got the coven to protect too but Walker, I think he puts his hatred of Vampires first, and when we see where it started I think he’s mistaken.  There’s lots to see here though and the triangle gets ever more complicated, and tangled, and I’m so unsure at times which side I’m with. But – hey- I’m forever on the wrong side when it comes to relationship triangles so what do I know? And this book is so much more than just that too, its just another side of the story.

Stars: Five, a great read and one to keep.

This series needs to be read in order. This book picks up where the first book left off. It took me a bit to get into the story again since it had been so long since I read the first book. The book has a lot of action and a bit of a cliffhanger. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next book.

"Sweet Last Drop" is book two in the "Night Blood" series by Melody Johnson. I absolutely loved this book. I'm usually partial to the first book in a series, being the best, but this book I felt changed my mind set real quick. Melody had me turning the page faster than I wanted to. I just couldn't get enough, and it threw me off so much with what happened. I seriously didn't see it coming, and I'm still thinking about the book. I can't wait to read the next book and see what happens next with Cassidy. Cassidy is such a strong leading character, and her give no crap attitude just makes me love her more.

Dom described Cassidy’s blood as a rare dish. Even though Cassidy was attracted to Dom she was scared of him,for Dom was the master vampire of NYC. Cassidy had fought with Dom against rogue vampires and it had put her in the hospital. Dom had come to see her as often as he could even after she came home from the hospital. Dom had a leveling soon where he would be totally weak and wanted Cassidy to go to Erin to make sure there was an alliance between himself and Bex who was the master vampire there. Also there was Ian who lived there and when he had been in NYC there was an attraction between them and he lived in Erin also. Ian was another who wanted something from Cassidy and had called daily for the last three weeks. Ian and Cassidy had night blood which met they had a hereditary gene that would enable them to transform into a vampire and survive. Cassidy was doing a story on city versus rural New York crime fluctuation. When Ian was taking Cassidy to his home they come across a dead body and then Dex is there and states she’s never let a vampire kill be found. Cassidy's brother has been missing and Dom had agreed to help her find him if Cassidy helped Dom. Cassidy also found out how much Ian absolutely hated vampires of any kind once she was with him in Erin. Cassidy hadn’t realized how Ian really was.
I loved this story and a lot. Another new twist on vampires. This story had all kinds of action, death, betrayals, bonds, secrets, attacks, Cassidy being dangerously hurt several times, vampire covens, master vampires, vampire proof house, romance to a degree, and so much more who would not love this. I also really like the characters but Cassidy the most with all the twists and turns she goes through and managed to survive. I highly recommend.
I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.

I am enjoying the journey of this series. The vampires and their world are dark and there is a lot exploration into the state of their humanity. I am not liking one of the characters at this point in time and I am not sure if I am supposed to or not. The other has flaws but seems to be better in general. Cassidy is badass with a grasp on her limits. I bought the next book and will be diving in soon.

Sweet Last Drop is the second book in Melody Johnson’s excellent Night Blood vampire series. Cassidy is a night blood, a human with DNA that makes it possible to be turned into a vampire. Night bloods are highly sought after by vampire covens. Cassidy has no desire to be turned but has aligned herself with Dominic the master of the New York City coven. Dominic is approaching a time when he will be vulnerable and wants to shore up an alliance with another master vampire. He sends, Cassidy to Erin, New York to confirm the alliance. Fellow night blood Ian Walker with whom Cassidy shares a past also lives in Erin.

The book is full of action. Cassidy learns more about Ian and is unsure what to make of the information. There are shifting loyalties and surprises in the story. Through it all Cassidy remains true to herself but does what she has to do to survive. The book ends on a very slight cliffhanger not involving the main story of the book. I highly recommend this series. The books must be read in order.

Cassidy is heading to Erin, NY to visit with Walker and investigate crime rates. Only, the crime rate spikes when Cassidy arrives, seems the NYC serial killer has followed her. She meets with Bex to try and solidify her alliance with Dominic before his leveling in hopes she will help him survive. The more she is around Walker the more their philosophies seem to clash. This story takes a heartbreaking turn and it will take Cassidy all her wits to survive this. Great story and looking forward to seeing how things play in in next story!

This book was awesome it was hard to stop reading every page leaves you anticipating what is going to happen next when you turn the page. I believe chapter 15 gets the book going really good and you think you know how it’s going to end but it was a surprise for me when I got to the end. I’m hoping it’s not the end of Cassidy and Dominic I will be disappointed. I will just have to wait to see and start reading Eternal Reign right now

I didn't get enough Dominic! Walker is not my favorite character, but I understand why he was such a major character in this book! This book for the first 25% or so had me skimming the pages, because there was not any new information that led to over arching plot for the series! I will say I did not except the plot twist at the end with the creature!! That seen alone was a full star! Give this author a try, she writes very detailed and graphic action!

DNF. Found myself confused and bored, maybe I would have held a different opinion if I had had of read the first book in the series, I don't know. Considering the characters and the writing style, I can't say I'm interested in wasting my money/time trying to give the first book a go.

This is my review of the book Sweet Last Drop by Melody Johnson. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. The beginning of this review does not contain spoilers and I will indicate when spoilers begin.
This book takes off from where the previous book in the series ended- The City Beneath. I definitely recommend reading the first book in the series before this one so that the events that have happened prior to this book will make sense. Cassidy agrees to visit Ian’s master’s coven as Dominic’s representative, to strengthen the two covens ties as allies. In this book we see sides to Ian Walker’s character that alter the reader’s view of him, proving the saying that honesty is the best policy. We also see the dynamics of Cassidy and Dominic’s relationship begin to change. I thought that one of the plot lines in particular was so subtle that it wasn’t until the end of the novel that I realised its significance. Overall I would recommend this book to both young adults and teenagers alike and I give the book four out of five stars.

----Spoilers from this point onwards----

As I mentioned earlier, we see sides to Ian’s character that were hinted at in the first book, but only fully come to light in this book. The book starts out with Cassidy and Ian beginning to form a relationship. We are introduced to other night bloods that Ian has met throughout his life. Yet we soon see that he is not being entirely honest with her. She finds out Ian has been having seizures all along and had never mentioned them to her. He also lies about why there is blood smeared around a house, claiming not to know anything about it. The reader learns that it is actually one of the ways to help keep vampires from entering a house. He is responsible for killing Rene, and at the end of the novel he and Cassidy’s relationship is torn apart. I was happy that she finally saw him for who he was in this book, as I was worried at the beginning of the book that she would continue to overlook that the priority in his life would always be killing vampires. She would only ever be second is his list of priorities.
As Cassidy and Ian’s relationship begins to fray, her and Dominic’s relationship begins to very slowly strengthen. In order to help find her brother, she agrees to be Dominic’s night blood representative and visit another master’s coven- Bex. She notes that while she is away from him she begins to miss his protection. “I would feel the void of his protection like a tightrope walker performing without her net.” He helps her to save Nathan who was transformed into one of the damned despite the major risks involved in attempting it.
The plot line as mentioned earlier that I liked the most was the most subtle- Cassidy begins to be able to smell blood and crave it. I never guessed that she still had a connection to Jillian who was using the connection to gain stronger.
The ending of the novel was also brilliant. Why is Dominic able to compel Cassidy when he never could before? I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series to find out.
