Peter wants to get his mother the perfect gift for her birthday. His sisters paint a picture and bake a cake--but they won't let Peter join in. Instead, he dreams of giving his mother the most beautiful tree in the world. Granddad promises to help, but Peter is disappointed with the black stick he digs up. How could anyone think this was a beautiful tree? Then the seasons change, and so does the tree. Will Peter's tree flourish?... This enchanting tale of childhood and seasonal transformation is brought to life by Bernadette Watts's beautifully observed illustrations of the natural world.
3.5 stars. This is a nice enough story about a boy who wants to find something special for his mum's birthday. The illustrations are nice too, gentle pictures and story. I didn't like the way Peter was told by older siblings he was too young to cook or paint, apart from being unkind it is nonsense and doesn't go with the gentle Steiner style feel of the book.
Delightful simple story with charming illustrations by Bernadette Watts who always captures country life, animals, plants and children with such skill.
