Desron 22 was on standard, shakedown maneuvers when the squadron discovered the Pleasure Bound. The massive cruise liner was adrift, everyone aboard her, dead except for a single survivor. The man's wild tales of monsters from the deep were hard to believe until those very monsters came after the squadron itself. Now a desperate battle for survival rages on the waves as the firepower of the United States Navy goes head to head with unspeakable terrors no human was ever meant to see and live.
“The last thing Wirtz saw before he died was the view of a tentacle too large to put into words through the window as it came crashing down onto the ship.”
All you fans of Battleship (2012) and SyFy Channel movies, this is your quicky. Fast fun kaiju horror.
A navy ship stumbles upon a cruise ship. On the cruise ship littered with bodies, there’s only one survivor left. He says the ship was attacked by creatures. They don’t believe him at first as he’s a notorious horror writer and what he’s spouting sounds very much like one of his stories. But they quickly realize he’s telling the truth.
I like that we readers don’t immediately get thrown into the deep end here. The story takes some time to warm us up. Starting with the survivor on the ship, surrounded by eerie silence, blood and death. And following that up with the navy ship finding the drifting and unresponsive cruise ship, not knowing what to make of it. This adds an element of mystery, while also giving the protagonist a little bit of time to establish himself. This doesn’t take long though. And once the Kraken army attacks, it’s a festival of gruesome horror action scenes to the end.
It reads like a short horror movie about Kraken. Horror and action scenes aplenty.
Sea creatures! Wooo! Love me some sea creatures! This one had a unique creature idea and an interesting story.
Ships in the middle of the Atlantic are being attacked by mutated squids that move on land like spiders. How do you fight something like that? You don't. You're just screwed. If you are looking for happy little endings, find another book. This one is violent and grim.
My only real beef with this book is that in the kindle version, about half way through the book, the editor apparently gave up because the rest of the book had so many typo's it just got ridiculous. It was frustrating because the whole book was filled with great action scenes but the typo's just would take you right out of it. >.<*
Over all it was another fun book from this author. If you enjoy sea creatures and /or just want some crazy fun and carnage, this book is for you.
Fast paced book with some gruesome bits! I think it would be a good B Movie... it reminded me of that kind of scene. Pity about all the typos; words left out, two choices of an adjective left in, countless uses of the word "passed" instead of "past", the list goes one. However the action and suspense were all there.
Everyone on board the luxury cruise ship are having a great time out on the ocean. Nobody knows that a large shoal of killer squid are tracking them and looking for a way to get on board. As the squid start to swarm all over the ship, killing everyone they find as people flee in terror to try and find somewhere safe to hide. In the aftermath, the few remaining survivors must find a way to get to the bridge and call for help before the squid find them...
DESRON22 consists of 4 destroyers and 6 frigates who are preparing for future joint missions together. One frigate receives an alarming distress call from the cruise ship and go to investigate. As they approach the stricken liner, the boarding party have no idea what to expect beyond the strange brief ravings of a survivor. As they try to save whoever is left, they discover that all the frigates have lost contact with the destroyers and the story they have been told doesn't sound quite so crazy now...
This is similar in format to Kraken Rising in that a naval convoy come into contact with survivors of squid attacks and have to formulate a plan to deal with the threat to them. If that isn't bad enough, they will then have to deal with Mother Kraken coming to dinner too. The story again is very fast paced, brutal and gory, with great action sequences of the attacks themselves. And there are lots of attacks, first on the cruise ship and then on the naval fleet. It is non stop pretty much from start to finish, and is every bit as good as the other book.
I have very much enjoyed both of these Kraken stories. Other than saying that there are lots of death by squid moments, I don't want to go into too much detail about the book so I don't spoil any of the story. It is great to get a different kind of sea monster to enjoy in the horror genre and these krakens and squids are great fun to read about. If you like creature features, you should like this one. I'm very keen now to read his shark offerings!
Here we have another fantastic book from Eric S. Brown. Full of suspense, terror, and horror, Kraken puts us in the middle of the ocean with a terrifying group of sea creatures hell bent on tearing us apart. It's well written, with all the action driving you to keep turning the pages. Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed immensely was the not-so-subtle pop culture references. Not only was I cringing at the horror wrought upon our characters, but laughing at the well placed humor. This is an author who never disappoints or let's his readers down. This is definitely one to add to your list.
Good creature-from-the-deep story with a realistic feel- there's no immortal action hero here who saves everyone from the monsters.
One quick note for the author: is Captain Ivan Ivonava meant to be Russian? If so, "Ivonava " is feminine. It should be Ivan Ivanovich (first name + middle name: Ivan, son of Ivan) or Ivan Ivanov (first name + last name). Spelling is kind of a free-for-all when transliterating Cyrillic so the "Ivonav" spelling also works. Sorry, Russian language nerd here ;)

Pretty bloody horror story of nature paying humans back for not taking care of the earth. Wouldn't want anything like this to happen, but reading is always good.
Gotta love a good creature book. This book is about attack squids with a monster mommy kraken. It was a fun creature novel with all the blood and gore. A quick read lots of fun.
This is a well-written monster book that really has some great descriptions of monster mayhem and death. It is a bit rushed, most likely due to its relatively short length, but overall it is a good way to spend some extra time. You may not want to read it in a cruise ship though.
This book had potential, but in the end it was unfinishable. I want to read every book about Krakens, but this book is clearly a first draft. I hate to write any sort of negative review about indie authors. Particularly those who write for Severed Press because I am a huge fan of what they do. But this has to be the most carelessly tossed together book I've ever read. It's the kind of book that when you read it, you want to swear off indie authors altogether. I'm not going to do that because there are so many good ones out there, but I fear others might.
The story here is not half bad. The first half of the book before I finally quit anyway. But at some point you have to stop reading when the author has not put forth the slightest effort at proofing the work before publishing it.
Don't waste your time with this, there are far more professional works available on Wattpad.
Kraken by Eric S. Brown was an awesome novel. I tore through it quickly and enjoyed it very much. It starts right up and doesn't let go until the very end. I've enjoyed everything by him I've read and this was certainly no exception. Check it out!!
Hello, this story felt like it wasn't cooked until it was done. Rather rushed and extremely abbreviated in almost every way possible. The story had great promise but ran out of gas way too quick. Thanks.
Good short monster thriller with squids versus the U.S. Navy. I think the story could use a more through editing but overall it kept my attention for a few hours.
