We are still loving this series. This book follows Ellie as she is asked to be a flower girl. The dress is really blah so she tries to jazz it up but ends up getting a big blob of orange paint on it. They're also trying to get a little dog adopted. It all ends well in the end. :)

Ellie had always trained about becoming a flower girl. At her cousin Hallie’s wedding, she was the flower the flower girl!

Ellie’s dress was very plain. Ellie didn’t like her dress. One day, she accidentally spilled orange paint onto the dress! Ellie didn’t know what to do.

Barkley, C., & Bishop, T. (2016). Ellie the Flower Girl (Vol. 14, The Critter Club). New York: Little Simon.
• Summary: This book is the 14th in the popular Critter Club series. Ellie has always dreamed of being a flower girl in a wedding and decorating the aisle perfectly and beautifully; plus, Ellie’s friend Liz got to go to her uncles wedding last year! One day, Ellie discovers that her cousin is going to get married and she is so happy that she will be invited to such a spectacular event! Soon she recognizes that she may be a part of the wedding and have the opportunity to wear a beautiful dress too. Until one day, she is told fantastic news, Ellie’s big cousin requests her to be the flower girl in the wedding. Then Ellie gets even happier when a cute little French bulldog named Lulu, pops into the Critter Club animal shelter. However, Ellie works really hard to find the puppy a good home and gets overwhelmed that she may not be able to. In the end Ellie has the perfect idea for the puppy and herself that makes everyone happy.
➢ Higher level thinking questions
1. Create a new end to the story, if Lulu was not adopted?
2. How would you write this story from the puppy’s point of view? Write three paragraphs.
3. What choice would you have made if you were in Ellie’s situation with the puppy?
4. What did you like best about this story?
5. What examples support that Ellie made a good decision toward the end of the book about the home for Lulu?

This book is about Ellie getting to be a flower girl. (Who is getting married?) Hailey, her cousin.
(How does Ellie feel about this?) So really, really happy. (What is she most excited about?) The dress.
But it was just a plain violet dress. This wasn't very exciting to her. She decided to make it look prettier. So she got a sparkly pink belt and put it around the dress, and then got some other stuff out. (Did she make it better?) When she was trying to close it (the art thing) for dinner it was jammed, so she kept pushing harder and then suddenly the orange paint popped open and squirted straight onto her dress! Her mom couldn't do anything. Her cousin didn't respond when she was trying to tell her about it. And finally her cousin came in and was talking about adopting this puppy, but Ellie wanted to talk about the dress. Her cousin had an idea. She tried everything to get it off, then finally she cut off the painted part of the dress, put on a white underskirt - ruffled - and she she looked lovely. (How did it end?) When she had a wedding. It was really nice.

(Would you recommend this book to other kids.) Yeah. 'Cause I really liked it. (Did you have a favorite part?) When they were decorating the dress.

We actually DNF’ed this at Eliana’s request

Eliana’s review: “Ellie is going to ruin this dress and I don’t even want to look at this book anymore. Please read something else.” Well ok then!

Barkley, Callie Ellie the Flower Girl (The Critter Club #14), Illustrated by Bishop, Tracey.113 pgs. Little Simon, 2016. $16.99. Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G Violence: G

Ellie has decided that it would be wonderful to be a flower girl in a wedding, and her wish comes true when her cousin asks her to be just that. But things go wrong from the start, first off the dress isn’t fluffy and sparkly, its just plain. Then she has an accident with the dress. Will her dreams be crushed? Also the girls of the critter club are trying to find a home for a puppy and not having luck either. Features many illustrations to aide ease of understanding for new readers.

I adore this series, the text and plot is just right for K-2 grade new readers and is filled with adorable illustrations. That being said I usually only buy the first 2-5 books in a liked series, it just gets too overwhelming after that in my small school library.
