Tristan has never wanted anything more than to play in the NHL, but if you want to be the best, you have to make sacrifices. Tristan’s always known that. He’s willing to give up anything to get where he wants to be. He’s made peace with being gay, but he knows his teammates can never find out.
Tristan’s gotten this far by setting two rules for himself: work hard, and never crush on your teammates. After a lifetime of putting hockey first, the hard work has finally paid off. He’s a hotshot new rookie in the NHL, and it’s better than he’d even imagined.
But Linus, his fellow rookie and new best friend, is hot enough to make him forget about all his priorities, and the rules he’s followed to get here are looking less reasonable every day. Tristan knows he needs to keep his hands to himself, but Linus is proving to be an impossible test for his self-control. Can Tristan keep a handle on himself or will he lose his lifelong dream?
**This 25,000 word MM sports romance novella has a few steamy scenes, a HEA, no cliffhangers and is a standalone. Shot on Goal is also Book 1 in the Highlight Reel Hockey Romance Series.**
3.5 stars from me. This could've been so much better with an editor to smooth away the rough edges, clean up the punctuation and get rid of the typos.
I liked the characters of hockey rookies Tristan (seems to be a popular name at the mo) and Linus. Tristan with his runaway mouth, who more than once put his foot in it and Linus, who being Swedish, sometimes got things muddled up in English but once he discovered that being asked back for coffee at 2 in the morning was apparently tantamount to being asked in for sex (at least it was with women), he realised that Tristan felt the same way about him as he felt about Tris. Honestly, these guys and their refusal to talk about important things like being in love with one another **shakes head in amusement**, but to be fair, Tristan had first-hand experience of what happens to hockey players when they fall in love with another player at one of his old clubs...they were banished and shamed.
The next one in the series features the goalie Jamie, and is a much longer read but I'm not sure I'll be taking that on if there is no editing...
I really loved the story: what is it with men and communication? And it's also sexy as hell! BUT: this book almost dropped down to three stars because of the non-existent editing and the large number of typos - it's a crying shame... I will still read the 2nd book, though, as I would really like to read Jamie's story - and I also hope to catch another glimpse of Tristan and Linus in that one :-) It's hard to find both books on Goodreads, though, as the author seems to have two (!) author pages, stating book one and book two, respectively, and nothing indicates the two books being part of a series! (FYI: The second book is called "Shot on goal".) UPDATE in December 2016: In the meantime, the author has remedied the two-author-pages situation.
I just really liked it. And even though the chances of continuation of the series seem pretty low, I would have loved to read more! Both books just work for me.
Snippet Review: I’m looking forward to reading more of this series. I liked both the main characters and the rest of the team. It is also fun that the author set this team up as the Connecticut Whalers. I love when authors use old, defunct hockey teams! I’m really glad that I stumbled upon this title on Goodreads and that it was available for free on Kindle Unlimited. Just when I think I’ve read all of the MM hockey romances out there, another one just appears like magic. Thank goodness!
