Heart breakingly good

I am a huge fan of Ike Hamill, and have been devouring his books. His horror has kept me up reading until beyond dawn. But, this isn't a horror story. It is a poignant study of an older man coming to grips with life in the year after his wife's death. At times it was a hard read, not because it's poorly written, it's a wonderful read, but because it hit a bit too close to home at times. I lost my long term partner, and I barely remember the first year afterwards, only remembering bits and pieces and going through each day like an automaton, wondering how did I end up here, why am I doing this. I felt the confusion Dr. Orlov felt, understood his reluctance to acknowledge that "the bastard", a stray dog he rescued, had become more than a stray. That would mean admitting to himself and the world that he was allowing an emotional connection that can end in heartbreak into his life again.
Only Ike Hamill can have a widower crying in bed at night be a happy ending. And, it left me crying too.

I really like Ike Hamill's books, all of them. They're all so different from each other but they all run along the scary, sci-fi, horror genre. I am a big fan so can get overly enthusiastic about his books. That said, this was one of the most poignant, emotive & tender books I've ever read. I'm not just saying that as a fangirl, I promise. The theme of this book is loss or grief and Ike Hamill handles this with depth & true feeling. It's a beautiful story, full of family, loss and of course, a big daft dog. I loved this book - it was so unlike any of his other books but it really struck a chord with me. Losing someone close to you is something we all experience at one time or another and this book speaks of that loss in an elegant and respectful manner. It's not a weepy, sob story, it's a story of coping; of learning to live a different life; of the importance of family & friends, and - of course, of the brilliant daftness of dogs.

I haven't given a book 5 stars in some time, but this book was such a pleasant surprise, catching me totally off guard and keeping me fully engaged from page 1 to the very end, I could rate it no less than 5 stars.

After a long and happy marriage, after Grace's death, her husband, John, basically goes into free fall. Trying to find himself, his new place in life is what this story is about. It was a strange and unusual journey John went through, but it all ended well enough, thankfully.

I really enjoyed this story. A lot of what I enjoyed about it was that it was totally unexpected and yet told so well that you slowly and yet surely start to root for John and hope he will manage to find some joy and contentment eventually. With his children, with himself. Very well written, and thoroughly enjoyable!

There aren't any words to describe how this book hit me

If you're a fan of Ike Hamill, beware! This is not his normal forte, but wow does he do it well! Life is sometimes mean and cruel and heartless. Sometimes little by little. Sometimes all at once. Follow the main character as he goes on living after the death of his wife. This story is bold and honest and, if you're like me, the ending will move you to tears.

Just not my cup of tea..

Not Mr. Hamill’s typical work. More true to life following one man’s life after the lost of a spouse. It was easy to step into the main character’s shoes, but there wasn’t much happening in the span of a year that you travelled. The story was well developed and told; but didn’t really carry the characteristics I look for; or enjoy.

Such a well-written story that kept me full engaged and ready for each page turn. The comments after the end truly resonated with me. When I lost my husband 26 years ago when we were just 49, I thought that I could never survive without him, so at times have felt guilty for doing so well adjusting to life after the initial high impact grief. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Life After Death

In all honesty the depth of this poignant story is both wonderful and horrible. This tale gives me a whole new respect for author Ike Hamill and his craft. A poignant story that resonates with anyone who's lost someone they love. Well written and very emotional.

Ike Hamill is known for his horror. This is not a horror novel. It`s a beautifully written novel about a man who has just lost his wife. He doesn`t know what to do with himself. He finds himself alone with adult kids who he doesn`t really connect with and a stray dog that he lovingly (eventually) refers to as the bastard. Life is hard when you suddenly find yourself alone. This story takes us on an unpredictable journey of an old man figuring out who he is outside of another person. It made me wonder (and worry) what will happen to my own parents when something happens to one of them. Mr. Hamill proves once again that he is an author that is not bound by any genre.

Post Grace by Ike Hamill was one a tear jerker at times. This book totally deviates from his usual bite-your-nails thrillers. I found myself reading until the wee hours of the morning. I wondered if this would be me. There weren't a lot of characters in the book...just basically his whole family (obviously post Grace), and a few other well defined characters. I absolutely loved this book. I felt peaceful while reading it, and the conclusion was wonderful.
