The Survivalist #7

Avenging Home

Rate this book
In “Enforcing Home” Morgan and his group suffered some loss. They discovered their old foes weren’t gone as they’d thought. Not only were they not gone, they were now stronger than before. Morgan would have to deal with this threat, while at the same time trying to restore some sort of quality of life back to his community. But this isn’t going to be easy. With the bombing at the market and wounding of his daughter Taylor, it became all too clear to Morgan that he was once again in a fight for the lives of those that matter most to him. Taylor was injured and would need care for some time. It wouldn’t be easy. Added to that, was the realization that he would have to deal with second-guessing himself. Was it his fault that she was now hurt?In “Avenging Home” we see how this long-running battle between Morgan’s people and their number one nemesis plays out. While Morgan thinks this is the biggest threat they face, there are things on the horizon he cannot yet see that are going to dwarf these problems. Morgan has lived in a vacuum. He’s had little information about the outside world. While he’s used radios to listen to what he can, there’s been precious little real information. But now he’s found what he believes to be a reliable source, and knows when and where to listen. But is it valid? Or is it simply propaganda?News and information can be powerful tools; but they must always be taken in context to make an educated decision. And the challenge is that there’s only one source. When you have to make decisions that mean the difference between life and death, the process becomes even more critical. So, we’ll follow Morgan and his tightly knit group as they are once again in the fight. Will they finally defeat the Federal thugs in their backyard? And more importantly, what will be the cost?

Too preachy

While I enjoy the underlying story line... this book in particular was just too preachy for me. So many rants about liberals and academics, communists and democrats... I get it, you're a republican who doesn't trust the government. It was just to much for me this time.

Morgan doesn’t want to shoulder the responsibility of being sheriff, jury, and judge. He is evaluating members of the surrounding community to step-up for the role of judge. But, an outside has swooped in like royalty and is demanding the job. Morgan and his cohorts have bigger fish to fry than this wannabe. The time to remove the DHS once and for all has come.

American’s seventh novel in The Survivalist series, Avenging Home, looks at the cost in human lives that it will take to secure Morgan’s community. It’s a grim reality in this new society. Several of his neighbors have already paid the ultimate price and even his own family has suffered almost grave injuries.

Every book in this series has offered pain and hope. I do believe it is a realistic view of what could happen in a microcosm if folks were willing to do whatever it took to survive.

5 out of 5 stars.

Back to himself

It seems the author is back to writing well and I enjoyed this installment much more than the most recent one.
I hope he keeps this up.
He includes more storylines and more personal interactions. He isn't condescending towards the women & they r seen as having strength again. The 3 stooges carrying on is much less and I was happy to c that. It was getting old and asinine. Short messing around with some dignity is much better.
I was disappointed about how sarge killed that man. I don't think it is necessary to the story & actually makes him more like the enemy n my mind.
Also there was the new guy hanging around the police station that is suspect but nothing happened. Maybe n the next installment.
So all n all he pretty much redeemed himself from the previous installment n my opinion.
Much better writing & I hope he does even better next time. Keep building storylines n a more personal manner. Invest us n each character and develop them.
Keep out the asinine goofing around but when it is included make it intelligent and humerus kind of goofing off maintaining dignity to each character.
And please stop having the good guys cross the line n2 enemy type behavior. It is a fine line.
I really did enjoy this installment. Much better. This series has been one of my faves all along & it is good 2 c it get back to better writing.

Going into this series I knew A. American would not be a liberal or float in the middle to left. His dislike of liberals and DHS shows up several times in this book. I also realize that his comments about the President were probably not directed at the current administration as this book was published ten months before the 2016 election, yet are more realistic to something this administration would do more than any previous administration. This book had the most violence yet also had much happiness.

"In the Before, we were seen as ATMs. Now, just a strong back. What you’re saying reminds me of the way the Nazis dealt with the Jews and others they considered undesirable. One of the first steps of this process is to dehumanize people. If you can get folks to view others as less than human, then it’s much easier to abuse them." In the past couple of years there has been more dehumanizing than what I have seen in my 40 years. We must change.

This is a good enough continuation of the stories to keep the series moving forward. I enjoyed listening to the latest confrontations in this series although I didn’t find it as good as some of the earlier books. This one seemed to have a little shallower focus on the characters while preparing for a showdown with the very nasty federal opposition. The books really should be read in sequence to know the characters.

The local town community is still seeking leadership from ‘Sheriff” Morgan. Morgan meets new suppliers in the market, gathers engineers to work on the power plant, recruits workers for the community garden and prepares his family and friends for a shoot-out. Meanwhile he must deal with captured enemies as well as drunken murderers and local thieves. Morgan doesn’t want to be judge, jury, sentencer and executioner… but someone has to do the hard jobs. He is seeking someone to serve as a judge at least for sentencing if not for fact finding as mostly the facts are clear when the culprits are caught in the act. Sadly, the man who steps forward for the job is just not the right person and he and his guards have to be dealt with firmly.

There are the usual antics from Sarge and his sometimes infantile and trigger-happy army guys, Mike and Ted. This repeated some of the male crudeness and of course violence considering the battle that occurs. Other characters add their part -- humor, determination, fear, revenge and even romance -- to the story. There were more survival tips shared, although maybe not as many as earlier books. I guess the help from the local military and the powers in high places really gives Morgan's neighborhood an edge but I couldn't help feeling that things were just a bit too easy going in the town.

Morgan catches a radio broadcast that brings disturbing news. They can’t tell if it is true, a hoax or propaganda, but it is scary if real. This book does a good job of continuing the story, wrapping up one phase and introducing a new conflict for future books. I hope the next book has a little more depth to it.

Audio Notes: Duke Fontaine does his usual solid narration of these characters. It just seemed to me that even he didn't have quite the same enthusiasm for this episode. Or maybe that was me projecting. I do enjoy listening to these though as they move well in audio.

I read books 6 & 7 of the Going Home series, "Enforcing Home" and "Avenging Home". The Feds are back and are playing dirtier than ever and A. American does what so many writers are afraid to do: he lets "the good guys" off their leash to deal with a threat in a not nice way that might cause some to question how good the good guys really are. The aftermath of behaving that way is also dealt with since that is a real thing too.

The humor that is sprinkled throughout the series stays strong and, again, I think it's one of the author's strengths: not taking himself too seriously, inserting humor into dark or tough situations (which is a real thing but one that often gets left out of stories that portray those situations), and getting the humor "right". I've heard the kinds of jokes and one-liners that are in the books on job sites, in bars, and other places where real people hang out and to me they ring true. Another couple entertaining reads.

It's interesting how a good book changes how one reads. This book went by quick. The last three or four books (not of this series) seemed to drag on and on and on........ I just couldn't get into those books. My reading style waned because of it.

I've been hooked on this series since the very first book. The previous six books have had their ups and downs. This book is above average. Even the down time events are interesting to read. The battle that takes place towards the end of the book is brutal. One of the more heart-wrenching battle descriptions I have read.

I feel this could be us as a country any time now, the way world events are happening. Although this is fiction, it's hard to image having to live in the conditions this group has to. What's today's fiction is tomorrow's reality.

This is a very good read and can be read on its own. But it's better if you read the first six books in order.

This survivalist series was a bit annoying as it based most of conspiratorial plot on the government getting people dependant on the state. After people needed welfare, food stamps, assistance in any form they were somehow not as worthy to freedom and would blindly comply with the government. This political philosophy is wrong in my eyes, but there are some that believe this. This is just a story and I enjoy the DHS jokes. The book has spelling errors and is not a mainstream published book. I like that about it and the story is good. The is good for me because it follows a few people and their adventures while imparting some prepping knowledge. The book series is now becoming more engaging for me as the basic skills for survival and specialized knowledge used to thrive in a cam setting are used. This book does not have a lot of surprises but it is an easy and good read.

Book #1 is mainly about him getting home. Book #2 is mainly about them surviving their neighborhood. Book #3 is mainly about them surviving in the woods. Book #4 is mainly about them surviving the DHS camp nearby. Book #5 is mainly about them surviving back in their old neighborhood and a huge forest fire. Book #6 is mainly about them surviving old and new enemies.

This one is mainly about them dealing with their old Federal enemies, the DHS, who are more numerous than before, and much better armed.

I have really been enjoying this series. The author states this is a natural ending for those who want to finish reading but he will to continue to write more for those who want to continue reading. The most moving part of this one is after a major skirmish two of the main characters are talking about what stays with you and haunts you after you kill people in battle and how to manage it. I will keep following the series.

Another good story in the series. I recommend that you start from the first book in the series. The story continues from book to book. This is a really good read. If you like dystopian novels you will love this one.

This is the seventh book in this series. I strongly suggest that the reader start with the first book and read them all. It is a continuous story from book to book.

Wonderful to read!

I've enjoyed reading all of the books in this series! The story, as it plays out, is compulsively readable. Each of the fully formed main characters are lovable, fascinating, and capable of moving the story along. I love dystopian books with all of the inventive ways people manage to live without all of our unnecessary luxuries. Read all of the books in this series, you'll be glad you did!

The DHS goons are back and making trouble by proxy. As Morgan, Sarge, and the guys work to rebuild the local communities, the shadow of war and possible invasion by Russian and Chinese forces looms in the background. A. American keeps the story going by focusing on the local DHS issues while giving little glimpses of the larger world. I appreciated the use of AMRRON and John Jacob Schmidt.

Best Yet

This series just seems to get more and more intense for me. As bigger factions are coming together this author really keeps the main characters as well as the new characters easy to understand. This particular installment really had all the humor I've come to love out of some of these characters as well as fear, anxiety and remorse.

I enjoy this series because, unlike other dystopian novels, the characters are actually working to restore society. They're not facing a zombie apocalypse or other fantastic epidemic. Society is in shambles and the characters, in their own little way, are restoring what they can. The books are well written and the plot flows smoothly. Recommended.

Morgan and his group find that any thoughts of safety are just that; thoughts. The Federalist defeat wasn’t as cut and dried as they thought. They must still fight on to destroy the evil that has turned the country into a third world nation in their goal to “remake” America in the way they choose.

Good, but need a military reviewer

Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is not Special Operations Command (SOCOM). Most of what people are calling errors are attempts to mimic accents, but using the wrong command really snaps the suspension of disbelief.

Another great installment in the Survivalist Series. I guess they can't all be 5 stars. This was not quite as exciting or as packed with knowledge as some others in the series, but still a wonderful story.

A. American's books still need help with editing and proofreading. As an English teacher, I can't help but notice all the errors. Nevertheless, the stories hold my interest. This book took only a day to read. It's a good thing I have books eight and nine ready to go.

This book is the 7th book in a series of twelve. What would happen if the nation’s power grid went down? How would humanity survive? This series provides these answers. Well written and riveting, I highly recommend!
