In a not-so-distant future, human beings are being relocated from Earth to established settlements in near-space. But don’t worry, it’s all for the good of the species and survival of the planet. Belinda Q is among the most recent collection of people scooped up for assignment to other planets. Before she goes, however, Belinda and the other ‘expendable’ men and women will have a three-hour window in which to find a soulmate. It’s called the Attachment Race. Half absurdist tradition and half pragmatic matchmaking event, the Attachment Race will fill the final evening on Earth for Belinda and her peers. What could go wrong?
Belinda Q. is a woman who's time has finally run out. At 30, she is collected and interred for forced immigration from Earth.
I like stories that feel like a real possibility if the technology existed to make it happen. Would the various Earth governments send their undesirables away if they could? A quick glance at the current political situation can answer that.
But this story is much more personal, and focuses on Belinda, how she copes with the knowledge that soon she will be sent away permanently, the choices she makes, and the chances she takes. I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen to her. I only wish the story had been longer, and maybe delved a bit in the final outcome.
A future where people are forced off earth to colonize planets for the good of the ones remaining. Of course, it's the rich remaining. Interesting concept, remind me WW11 and concentration camps.
Kevin Bliss has done an amazing job with his story telling. You are drawn into the life of Belinda Q as she enters she last days on planet Earth before being relocated to the stars right from the first page. A must read.
