After collecting the fourth element (wind) in Antarctica, Ret returns home to find the resistance is only increasing. Every nation has joined the effort to stop him, and there’s talk of a threat against Coy Manor. Thanks to an ally at Waters Deep, our heroes learn a secret that takes them to a mysterious tree in Russia where Ret discovers a land lost in time (and a new admirer).

Meanwhile, a death in the community sets Ana on a mission to uncover the truth about nutrition, eventually gleaning her answer when Paige discovers a strange drawing of Stonehenge deep within the Keep. At the same time, Jaret accepts a mission to steal an item from Lye, and Mr. Coy stumbles upon a deadly weapon that could spell Ret’s doom...

The stakes are high as the quest to fill the Oracle takes on a whole new dimension, including Lye's plan that eliminates his need of Ret entirely. Find out what the past can reveal about the present in the adventure to collect the fifth element (wood)—an adventure that will teach Ret about a different kind of element by revealing the mutant in us all.

Wow. While this book was just as amazing as Solar wind in excitement and adventure, it took a very twist with your emotions. The true challenges and hardships of aging and being forced to deal with a more adult reality shines throughout the entire book. It's amazing and wonderful to be with all these characters again through their developments. The reader really gets to know each character a little better and go through those challenges of aging (again, for those of us that are already full grown). The lessons and new views of this book are wonderful and really force the reader to stop and think about what's being said and how we can apply this to our own world. With each book their world becomes less of a "far away made up land" and starts to mold closely with our current reality. Though the book does touch on a lot more serious matters, it is still an amazing read, again, with a lot of humor mixed in. Definitely recommend!

“Oracle: Mutant Wood,” the fifth book in the series created by C.W. Trisef, is a very interesting adventure that takes place around the world. The story continues the adventure of a mutant boy named Ret who has the power to control certain elements like dirt, fire, metal, and wind. He gains this power by collecting the six elements of the earth in a device called the Oracle. Ret and his family have collected four out of the six elements, and the next element they need to collect is the wood element which is somewhere in Russia. As with the first four books in the series, it was action-packed, which is what I enjoy in a book. In addition to the action, I enjoyed the great amount of character development throughout the book. All of the characters have very realistic personalities and are full of emotions that are very common in families of the modern era. I could easily relate to them because they all have problems that normal families have. In addition, however, they still have to worry about the otherworldly problems of filling the Oracle the best they can, which adds to the excitement and action.
Throughout the book, Ret(the main character) was trying to figure out his true identity. He couldn't understand why it seemed like the whole world hated him. However, he eventually finds mutant people that accept him into their society, and he finds out who he truly is, “He was a mutant. Yes, a mutant-not only in his appearance but also in his past and present, his hopes and habits, his family and fears. If anyone in this world was a mutant, it was him, for he was the most different of all”(Trisef, 173). This is when Ret truly accepted his identity, and this change is what motivated him to complete his destiny of filling the Oracle. This experience helps him grow into someone who accepts anyone, no matter how strange or different they are.
“Oracle: Mutant Wood” is a book written for teenagers and that is exactly who I recommend it to. Throughout the book there are references that younger readers would not understand and older readers might not be able to relate to. The particular group of teenagers that would thoroughly enjoy this book are those who enjoy action, adventure, and a little bit of fantasy. They will be very interested in the book to see the characters develop and the story advance. All readers of the book will have a different opinion about themselves and the world around them after reading this book.

About two or three years ago, Trisef did an event at my school and that's where I bought the oracle series. I finished the first four books that year before taking a break. Recently I finished the Mutant Wood and thought it was decent.

The Pros:
The first thing I'd like to do is congratulate Trisef on the amount his writing improved throughout the series. I've come to notice that he has enhanced his world-building, diversified his plot, and even improved his writing style. I especially thought the way Lionel was written was pretty clever. I also liked how Trisef gave Ret a bit more character development in this book, but though it came a bit late.

The Cons:
I thought Mutant Wood was more so on the generic side of things, both character and plot-wise. There are a lot of books in YA Fiction and I understand how hard it is to write something "more than" with all the tropes and cliches flying around. There were also several questionable plot points that were in use and the scene writing sometimes came off a bit cheesy.

I hope to see the 6th and 7th installments of the Oracle come out soon. As to CW Trisef himself, I sincerely hope he continues to write and improve his craft.
