A CounterTerrorism operative shows up tortured to death. An elderly prof goes missing. An eco-cult is recruiting at a weekend concert for young people at Battersea Power Station. A teenage felon's got to make a simple swap: Some photos for his freedom.
Only he's trapped inside Battersea Power Station. No swap. No way he can tell anyone about it. And the dawning horror that this time the missing and the dead will bring England to its knees.
He's got his GCSEs, his guitar, and a grasp of engineering. That's got to be enough.
Usually, I don’t read books of this genre. However, I got this recommendation and thought I’d give it a try. And I do not regret it. Blackout by Sam Grenfall is a fantastic thriller, and such a fun read. It contains really interesting characters who kept me engaged in the book. The book is great for teenagers (boys and girls). It deals with current issues and gives some interesting conversations, it’s also a good conversation starter with the kids.. This book is easy to read if you’re dyslectic, which explains why kids love the book so much. It’s a super easy read and yet a great one. The writing of Sam Grenfall will make it impossible for you to put the book down. It is that kind of book that makes you forget what page you are on and before you know it its dark outside and a few hours later. Absolutely recommended.
This epic young adult thriller, Blackout, centers around a young delinquent named Sebastian Cleary. Stuck in Battersea Park Station, Sebastion finds himself up against the Counter Terrorism unit and his only shot out is an exchange of photographs for his freedom. But how can he make the swap while he is stuck? This thrilling coming of age story focussed on themes that will resonate with many young readers, and grown-ups alike. Feeling isolated and lost, wanting to get away from things and focus on more important passions. Sam Grenfall has mastered the art of dialogue and will keep you turning pages.
Great thriller. The comparisons to James Bond and Breaking Bad are not wrong, but I think Sebastian Cleary offers a much more relatable character; and the choice of location – Battersea Power Station, was fantastic. A suave, fast-paced page-turner, I would recommend this to anyone looking for such a book.
On a side note, I think this book would have inspired me to work harder at science if I had read this while I was still at school!
I completely love the idea of Seb playing the guitar, stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time. I kind of wish he was real so I could download his songs of Spotify and listen to them myself. Seb's character is really interesting, he's both really nice and really edgy. He's a bad boy with a heart of gold, yet it seems very persuasive and very real. I'm sure there are people who won't believe he's a good guy, but I thought he seemed genuine.
What a great little page turner, what a great little thriller. I actually don't think age factors in this novel really, anyone of any age can enjoy how fun this book is. The language is really witty with lots of phrases that just made me smile and its full of adventure. I'm really looking forward to his next book not just for my sons sake, but for my own.
Blackout really turns its own pages. Written by Sam Grenfall, the teen thriller begins inside a Young Offenders Institute in Feltham, where our brilliant and audacious hero Seb is inmate. After a strong gym workout with his fellow inmates, Seb is left in solitary confinement without his guitar. Mr Granby and Ms Kokkini arrive from Special Opps. Sebastian is given a mission to get photos from a mysterious music concert at Battersea Power Station, in exchange for his freedom. Part 1 of the book is an exciting and entertaining deterrent to prison life, and prelude to a teenager winning his freedom and redeeming himself.
Sebastian Cleary, makes for an interesting character study. For teenagers and grownups missing their all-important ‘executive function’, you must pick this novel up! It is available in paperback by Claret Press and as audiobook by Essential Audiobooks.
Who doesn’t know Pink Floyd’s album Animals with the Battersea Power Station and a giant pink pig on the cover? This Power Station is the setting of Grenfall’s gripping book Blackout. Since I normally don’t read young adult fiction I don’t know whether this is a great introduction to the genre or if it is a refreshing new young adult book, but either way it’s a great read!
W O W this book was a fast paced action thriller of epic proportion. Throughout the novel you are constantly being kept on the edge of your seat, always wondering what is lying in wait on for you on the next page. If you’re looking for an exciting roller coaster of book then this is the narrative for you.
I don't generally gravitate to this genre, but considering that I didn't find myself bored and kept on reading I can only say that the story and the characters ought to keep you engrossed in this book, and it more than earns a read, even if it isn't your normal preference. Absolutely recommended.
An absolutely gripping read. Artfully written, full of suspense and exciting. I don't normally read this genre, but after this introduction to Grenfall's work, it is definitely something I want to read again.
BlackOut finds young misunderstood Sebastian Cleary in an intense white knuckle ride penned by esteemed author, Sam Grenfall. ‘Young Adult’ fiction tends to steer clear of contemporary settings, instead focusing on dystopian futures or fantasy realms. Grenfall’s approach to the genre is more nuanced, here we have a riveting character study coupled with a high-octane, espionage eccentric thriller. Both young and old alike will have an absolute blast checking this story out.
