Rate this book
In the shade of the Giant's Throne Mountain, and on the coast of the Indian Ocean, Port St. Christopher is home to Apley Towers; a riding school for girls and boys, young or old, who learn what it means to be a true horse rider.

Trixie has outgrown her stable horse, Slow-Moe, and realises she has to put the past behind her, and find a new horse to ride. But after a terrifying incident with an advanced horse, she begins to question whether moving on is worth the risk. With a little help from the Kodas, Trixie learns that she must face her fears. But will she find her perfect horse? And if she does, will riding ever be the same for her again?

‘Siren’s Song’ is the third book in Myra King’s series. We are reacquainted with the characters of Kaela, Trixie, Phoenix and Angela and the Apley Towers Riding School, but, this time, it’s Trixie who takes centre stage. If she wants to make progress in the field of dressage, she realises she must leave her old horse, Slow-Moe, behind. But when no other horse at the riding school is suitable, Trixie knows she must look elsewhere. And so begins the horse-hunting shopping trip until she finds the horse that she’s drawn to – the one that is ‘meant to be’ and the one that she is destined to own.

On the way, we learn that horses can have feelings too, with just as much personality and character in their ‘sentient being’ as humans and the bond that is created between horse and rider becomes never more apparent than in the relationship between Trixie and Siren’s Song.

Myra King paints a delightful picture of the South African setting throughout, with its mix of sugarcane fields, oceans, mountains, monkeys and snakes and it makes for a fresh and interesting setting.

Like its two predecessors, this book is delightfully written with characters that are sympathetic, warm and believable. Their attitudes and inner feelings are identifiable whilst their dialogues and online chats are amusing. It was compelling to see how their relationships were developing and how they hint at what may lie in the future. The old familiar teenage themes of jealousy, insecurity and self-doubt reappear but the story is essentially a charming and satisfying one.

The subject matter may be firmly rooted in the equine world but the issues the story tackles are universal and which no doubt will strike a chord with many teenagers, if not us all. I’m positive future instalments of the series will be just as enjoyable.

Absolutely loved this 3rd book in the Apley Towers series.
Getting to know the characters better is always one of the best parts of getting lost in a good story and Myra has done such a great job at bringing the reader into the inner circle of the Kodas.
I look forward to getting to know each one better in the rest of the series and seeing where the other relationships with the other characters lead.
On that note, although this book was focused on a very sweet attraction between a girl and a horse with a special song just for her... It had other sweet moments of romance and youthful flirting that had me reminiscing and hinting to my husband for more of that...

The third book in the series is more about Trixie who faces a new problem. She has outgrown her stable horse, Slow-Moe. The girl is aware that she needs to put the past behind her and move to another horse, but it’s not that easy to find the ideal replacement. Trixie is actually in the search of the siren’s song, which will lure her straight to the perfect horse. She tries out many horses at Apley Towers, but none of them stands out. After some awful incidents, Trixie feels lonelier and more confused than ever.
One day her parents decide to let Trixie buy her own horse, so the girl goes horse shopping with Wendy Oberon. There are many options lying straight ahead, but there’s no stroke of luck around the corner. The girl looks upon this situation from a different perspective and tries to imagine what it would be like if she stopped searching. Perhaps the horse that it’s meant to be will come to her on its own.
