So, I loved the title because it upon first reading it, I thought: “Damn, really? Shots fired? That’s so ‘extra’ for writing copy.” Then the SECOND, more confrontational voice in my head said: “So the f—k what if it’s extra... that’s the point... we are evoking EMOTION and emotion is extra... duh.” As one who has worked in PR for 15, and specifically branding for five, years, I thought copy was low on the totem pole of items I needed a refresher on.
I. Was. Wrong.
Part of the refreshment of this book was that it confirmed, added credence to, validated what I include in my practice. Another was that it shined a light on items I either frequently overlook or downright abandon because it seems trivial or time-consuming.
Without spoiling the fun for the readers, I’ll point out one of these “frequently overlooked” lessons that I believe, in conjunction with other practices, will elevate my performance as a brand strategist and marketer. It’s Ms. Beverly’s “SO WHAT?” method of elevator pitches. That one concept unlocked an entire arsenal of tools for me to use when pitching to clients or on their behalf as well as on grassroots campaigns that I personally execute.
I won’t recap the whole book here but I’m excited to be a brand strategist in this day and age of technology and innovation and with books like this to polish my old skills and introduce me to new ones.
The author has an easy,conversational,yet professional and direct voice. She’s a straight shooter and as a straight shooter myself, I appreciated that perhaps more than the content.
