About the Author: Mary Jane Hathaway is the pen name of an award-nominated writer who spends the majority of her literary energy on subjects un-related to Jane Austen. A homeschooling mother of six young children who rarely wear shoes, she’s madly in love with a man who has never read Pride and Prejudice. She holds degrees in Religious Studies and Theoretical Linguistics, and has a Jane Austen quote on the back of her van. She can be reached on facebook at 'Pride, Prejudice, and Cheese Grits' or her regular author page of Virginia Carmichael (which is another pen name, because she’s just that cool).
I have been thoroughly enjoying Ms. Hathaway's Cane River series! This is another story that is just as wonderful as the others. Those apartments above By the Book must be magical, it seems they've gotten quite the reputation by this time. Move in and you're guaranteed to find your true love! :D I love the family that Alice and Paul (from The Pepper in the Gumbo) have created around that bookstore. Everyone who comes into contact with those two immediately become one of them. And Rose and Blue are no exception! They do try and deny their attraction, but true love will not be thwarted, especially when helped along by Alice and Paul. ;) Plus all the literary references always give me warm fuzzies. Even when I may not know the book referenced! I sincerely hope Ms. Hathaway continues with books in this series because I want more of this surrogate little family.
Of course I love the book. I wrote it! In seriousness, I hope my readers will enjoy this last installment of the Cane River Romance series. It was a joy to write and I'm so sad to say goodbye to these characters!
The fifth in Mary Jane Hathaway’s Cane Creek series. We met Blue in These Sheltering Walls as the handsome lawyer who briefly dated Henry. This is his story. By the Book bookstore has apartments upstairs that seem to be cursed with bringing together those who are living there, so Blue is a little concerned when Alice and Paul hire a beautiful Creole girl from Baton Rouge to be the nanny for their 3 children and of course, live upstairs next to Blue. Everyone is pushing them together but Rose has some pretty deep secrets she’d like to keep secret and Blue is still recovering from the heartbreak of losing Henry. They devise a plan to pretend to be dating but this comes with it’s own risks. We get glimpses into these secrets through flashbacks in the form of hurtful words spoken to her. Blue has some of his own hurts we get a glimpse into and we see him finally stand up to his father. This lovely, clean, romance that emphasizes the ideas of grace, mercy and sacrifice (especially Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross for our sins) started a little slow (perhaps because I’ve recently been reading some high action suspense thrillers) but I am so glad I persevered. About ¼ of the way through I didn’t want to put it down. Good character development, realistic story line and great dialogue. Love the poetry, references to different genres of literature and the Creole culture. A great conclusion to the series.
I really liked this book, the characters, the story, and the writing. Again, the editing was not great. I love that this author writes about hard, thoughtful subjects. Her books are not fluff and I love that they are interesting, clean, well written, and have some spice. Totally recommend this series.
I like these books. I like the flawed but hopeful nature of the characters. Most of all, I love all the various literary quotes woven into the story. Great book.
Since I had read the first 4 in the series I capped it off with number 5; I may have been getting Louisiana fatigue, but I didn't appreciate this book quite so much as the previous 4.
What I love about Mary Jane Hathaway's books (the Jane Austen Takes the South series and the Men of Cane River series) is that they're all so... sweet. They're clean and well-written and filled with literary references and warmhearted, memorable characters and they always end with a romantic happy ending! This final chapter in the Cane River saga contained all the great couples that I had watched fall in love in the previous books, and I loved once again visiting my favorite fictional bookstore, Alice's By the Book. I identified with Rose- Blue, too -and their romance in that famous, upstairs apartment was fun to read. My favorite part was their first kiss on the beach! I'm looking forward to seeing what Mary Jane Hathaway comes up with next!
What can I say? I love second chance stories. Hathaway gives fans just what they want, a fresh couple in a familiar novel setting, surrounded by beloved characters. The beauty of the Cane River series is the family, friends and community who add layers of love. This story is not simply romantic (though it is that too) it is full of family type love, friendship type love, and bravely addresses the Godly love we receive from our maker. It is a lovely story centering around Rose a women searching for a second chance, and Blue the loveable lawyer (whom you meet and fall in love with in a previous book) who is outwardly in control, but inwardly searching for the courage to take control of his life.
