An ok story about Darth Malgus right after the Empire lost Alderaan to the Republic, with a telling of a fight with a Jedi while also showing us Malgus when he was younger with his father and his teachings.

A prequel to Decieved.

Taking place immediately after the cinematic trailer for the game called “Hope,” this shows Darth Malgus taking down a handful of Jedi as he hunts through the forest of Alderaan, but it reflects upon his history and childhood as a primer for the novel he features in. Even if it’s merely for that reason that it was made, I think it ultimately stands alone very well for a short Sith story, and it has an ending that punches in such a way that I actually ended up immediately rereading this to catch it all again. And if you’ve read this, you’ll understand— that really put me in the mindset of the character in those closing moments, and it was haunting. Very effective stuff. This is a highlight of the Old Republic era so far, in my opinion, alongside the cinematics.
