One More Time
Love, Vegas Style, Book 3

Small town cop Will Jacoby is comfortable in his life, or so he thinks. When he realizes that Brannon Frost, his neighbor and friend, has grown into a handsome young man, he’s confused by his interest. Things get even more messed up in Will’s head when Brannon kisses him.

A man would know he’s gay before the age of thirty, right?

When Brannon’s father dies, Will steps up and becomes the friend Brannon needs. Soon Will is no longer able to deny his feelings for the young man, even though it could damage his carefully constructed life and career.

This story was formerly part of the multi-author anthology Uniform: A Man in Uniform MM Bundle.

This story means well. Bless its heart.

There's a cop, Will, who insists he's straight even as he's lusting after the sexy young man who lives in his apartment complex. And there's the said young man, Brannon, who obviously crushes on Will and shows it by rough-housing with him in the pool.

When a tragedy befalls Brannon, Will is there for him and can finally admit he's gay ... not just for Brannon, but in general. Probably.

Will also suddenly remembers a 14-year-old boy from summer camp who broke his heart, so he swore he'd never fall for a man again. Which really makes no sense because who doesn't have their heart broken at 14, but not much about this book feels realistic.

Everything happens too quickly and too easily. The language is so simplistic, this book reads on a fourth grade level; not the content, obviously, but the conversations are wooden and the characters lack depth.

Also, Will is 30 to Brannon's barely 18, and that felt a little creepy. Brannon can't even support himself.

There are a couple steamy scenes and a nice HEA, but I had to look up the names of the MCs to write this review, even though I just finished this story a couple hours ago. That tells you something.

To love or not to love.

Will Jacoby is content with his life. It's on an even keel and he's moving along. Until he starts having feelings for someone he didn't expect. And that unsettles him. Attraction, interest and caring are fundamental building blocks to a romantic relationship. Will has all of these feelings about his teenage neighbor Brannon.

Needless to say, the age difference concerns Will. Not just the difference, but Brannon's relative youth and inexperience with life in general. Combined with the unexpectedness of Will's sexual awakening, he finds it disconcerting.

I like the premise and the setting, but here is where the short story didn't work for me: too much ground is covered too quickly without the sense of reasonable transition including the push to the ending. In order to cover that ground the deeper elements are glossed over. I always felt kept at a distance and the characters appeared wooden, their motivations not given enough elaboration. I think I would love this story spun out and seeing the conflicts Will feels more thoroughly explored. It just wasn't the age gap love affair I was hoping to read.

A little over two years ago, I read a story, by Marie Sexton, called One More Soldier and it ripped my heart out. It didn't exactly have a happy ending but it was such a powerful read and the love story was so beautiful, I gave it 5 Stars, and I would again. I didn't realize at the time, but One More Soldier was based on a story by Ethan Stone that eventually turned into One More Time . There is no plagiarism on either author's part, though, so no worries there. It's all laid out in the Acknowledgements of One More Time and, I went back and looked, in the Dedication of One More Soldier.

One More Time is a perfectly enjoyable story, set in the present time. It was a low angst, friends to lovers story, and I do love those, but, it lacked the emotional punch that that One More Soldier had. What One More Time does have, though, is a happy ending. I can't tell you how much I appreciated that.

Thirty year old Officer William Jacoby moved to Mesquite, Nevada years ago after a four year stint with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and he likes his quiet life in Mesquite. Not much happens, and after dealing with punk gangbangers in Vegas, he likes it that way. One of the highlights of his day is his neighbor's kid, Brannon Frost, coming to talk, swim and play around with him every night after his shift.

The two met when Brannon was just thirteen, and their friendship has grown over the years. When Brannon turns eighteen he approaches Will and lets him know of his interest.

At first Will is just confused. One, he's always identified as a straight man, and two, even if he weren't the difference between eighteen and thirty is huge. Will puts some distance between the two while he tries to sort out his own feelings.

When Brannon's father dies though, Will steps up and becomes the rock that Brannon needs. When their relationship evolves into romance Will realizes that he doesn't want to lose Brannon and rolls with it.

This is a May/December, low angst romance and coming of age story. It highlights that there's always something we can learn about ourselves no matter how old we are.

I would have preferred to see more time with Brannon and Will as a couple, perhaps an epilogue giving them a more solid HEA and finding out whthe repercussions, if any, with Will's job and Brannon's decision for school, etc. At the end of the day, I just felt like it was unfinished and I longed to know more about the couple.

Note: I kept flashing back to Marie Sexton's One More Soldier, which Ethan Stone explains in the beginning is because that story was based on Stone's original idea for this story and used with his permission. However, that was a historical story without an HEA, and Stone's One More Time is a contemporary romance with an HFN.

Yes! I love this book. I have to admit this series is so varied and fun to read. We had the raunchily erotic first book, then the roller-coaster that was the second book. In this third book of the series, the author brings you a beautiful and tender story.

Will is a cop in a small town. His life is pretty sorted. He has a good friendship with Brannon, a young man, whom he's watched grow up. When Brannon kisses him, Will is confused. What are these feelings he's developing for Brannon? He couldn't suddenly be gay at the age of thirty, surely not?

When Brannon's father dies and he's left alone, Will steps in and becomes his shoulder to lean on and his source of comfort. He begins to realise that no matter how much he tries to deny it, he feels a lot more for Brannon than just friendship.

We stayed in Will's POV throughout but I never felt as if I was missing anything. Brannon's feelings and emotions were displayed for the reader to see in all his interactions with Will. In truth the conflict was always Will's.

This story is just wonderful. I had a lump in my throat on several occasions. I'll admit it's not the raunchiest story I've read by this author. But that wouldn't have fitted these characters.

This story is about finding yourself and falling in love for the first time. It's delightful. It's beautiful. It's sexy. Sweet perfection!

I should mention that the books in the 'Love, Vegas Style' series by this author are novella length, basically less than 100 pages. If you're like me and sometimes want a quick #MMRomance read to get lost in, then they are just right.

Will is a straight sheriff who moved from Vegas to a small town to get away from the drama and violence. He loves life in the quiet town and doesn’t even mind the gossip and ridiculous calls he gets for domestic fights and whatnot. He has an established routine that includes a daily swim in his complex’s pool that he shares with his neighbor’s son, Brannon.

He’s known Brannon for a while now and only recently noted that he’s less a boy and more a man and interestingly enough – Will begins to have erotic thoughts about him. To keep his mind clear he begins to avoid Brannon, and when Brannon approaches Will about it, things detonate and Brannon admits his feelings for Will … But Will can’t accept these feelings… yet.

When tragedy strikes, Brannon and Will are forced to spend time together and Will can no longer avoid his feelings. Now that he’s exploring his options, how will the small town react?

**

This is a short story, but very well done. There is a reasonable progression from noticing the desire to acting on that desire that feels plausible. Though Brannon and Will don’t always act in a way that felt natural, it was very sweet and at times sexy, too.

I loved that Brannon never backed down and that he confronted Will with his feelings rather than dance around them.

Fans of May/December romance and hurt/abuse will enjoy this very much.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

This was quite an emotional short story involving cop William Jacoby, a man pretty set in his ways who would do anything for you. He has a dilemma that comes in the form of Brannon Frost, a young man he has watched grow up over the years and who one day makes it obvious that he sees more in William than just a friend. William, who has always considered himself straight, panics and starts avoiding the young man at all costs.

When Brannon has to deal with a tragedy things are no longer so black and white and he needs Williams support more than William needs to carry on avoiding him. It’s a slow burn romance with a bit of teasing but I love how protective William becomes, when the man makes a decision he puts everything behind it and he loves hard.
