The Unseen Trilogy #3

Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel: Long Way Home

Rate this book
Dark Universe

Buffy and Angel find themselves launched into a frightening reality where fierce dragons and other fairy-tale monstrosities rule supreme. Once they locate each other, they rally the missing teens - including Salma - and attempt to make their way through the interdimensional portal back to Sunnydale. Little do they know that two unlikely allies have also come through to alternity: Spike and the rogue Slayer, Faith, both with their own respective - and complicated - MOs.

Back in L.A., gang violence and vigilantism are at a fever pitch. The Slayerettes - now an extended unit - are holding down the fort, awaiting Buffy and Angel's return. But Slayer and Vampire are feeling moral conflict that rivals the physical strain of demon-slaying: each wonders if a reality exists where their love could have survived. And when one of the duo's charges is suddenly killed, the portal to Sunnydale is sealed. Now, before they can worry about ridding their own universe of supernatural chaos, they've got to find a way to get back to it...

This is the final volume of a crossover trilogy reuniting Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer... the shows, not so much the characters. Buffy and Angel finally spend some time together in this concluding volume and have a bittersweet if-only/maybe moment. It's worth noting that the book was released early in September of 2001, so world events probably had a big impact on its reception and sales. It's set between the fourth and fifth seasons of Buffy, which was concurrent with the first and second seasons of Angel. It's a good conclusion to the trilogy, with all of the loose threads tied-off, but the story starts without much of an orientation to what's happening, so readers should have all three sections are on hand before reading this one. It is pretty interesting once it gets going, and Mariotte and Holder do a fine job of capturing the characters voices, complete with some clever quips and snappy dialog. It's quite suspenseful, and what with Buffy off riding dragons like she's auditioning for a role in Pern or Westeros and Giles and Wesley sniping at one another and all manner of things going wrong... well, you just gotta have a little Faith that it'll all work out in the end ... Grrr & arrrgh.

This final chapter in the Buffy-Angel crossover goes on for too long and takes the characters into the wrong locations.

Picking up from the previous novel, Buffy and Angel (with Spike close behind) enter the portal of infinite worlds to bring the captured children of L.A. back home. However, each of the characters is in a different reality: Buffy in a fantasy world with dragons, Angel in a fantasy world with witches, and Spike...I'll leave that surprise. Eventually the two leads end up together so they can complete their quest. Meanwhile, back on Earth, there's a lot of filler that doesn't progress the plot: the gang war is going on, Giles and Wesley continue to snipe at each other, Tara pines for Willow, and supporting characters created for this series can have their chapters skimmed over with nothing effecting the overall plot.

I was pleased to see a familiar character return for the conclusion, but I can't say much else I found positive about this book. A major disappointment.

[Edit] I noticed earlier in other older reviews I wrote, that the old fashioned < spoiler > html doesn't work anymore.
I did use them partially on this review, but like I said, they don't work anymore.
This review is riddled with spoilers, just a heads up!

Not sure how to really rate this book. I wasn't sure to give it 3 or 4 stars. But overall it was a really good book. I was definitely engrossed in it, wondering what would happen next and how they'd all fix this mess.
But the ending to me was separated in 2 parts. Which was good, and bad.. The very last pages really led me down.

To give a wider opinion on the book(s), first the things that bugged me (and you'd think that, seen as it's quite a lot, I didnt like the books. But that's not true. I just got a strong opinion) :
The Salma character kinda bummed me out at first. She seemed like this whiny, spoiled brat. But when the time came she had to be brave, to me, she came through. And I forgave her her whiny'ness.
I am Very glad her brother Nicky died. Cos he annoyed me the most throughout the entire trilogy! If the hadn't killed of his character, I personally would have loved to jump into the book and take care of it myself. He's really a complete asshole! (Sorry, but it's the truth). It doesnt matter that he saves his sister. Some bad deeds just cant be erased by a good one. And his attitude alone is sickening.
Now I do wanna mention that Faith's appearance was one of those next that really annoyed the hell outta me. She made comments to Buffy that were just uncalled for and I cant believe that neither Buffy nor Angel didn't at least tell Faith to shut her piehole or punched her in the face. But I think that was mostly the writers their fault. Cos in my opinion Faith went to jail and was already changing. Before she went she showed guilt and remorse about her actions towards Buffy. So her attitude aginst Buffy just didn't add up to me. But hey, that's just my opinion ;-)

All the stuff about gangs & maffia did irritate me too. I know it was crucial to the storyline. But personally, I couldnt care less about stupid gangs or maffia.
So some parts were pretty hard to get through for me. (and I mean throughout all the books. In book 3 there was the least gang/maffia stuff)

I also think that Alina's parents really gave up and in to their daughter way too easy & fast. They didn't even put up a fight. Which really conflicts the picture they painted of them earlier on, how they forced Alina to use the reality tracer against her will, etc. And now Alina tells them no, and they just go along with it. I dont know if it's because they realised all along, over time, that it was a lost cause? This never showed or has been said though, so it's mere speculation. But to me, it was really weak how they just gave up.
Quite unexpectedly I did end up teary eyed when her parents left her behind, when they went through a portal, leaving their daughter behind.

This is the part of the ending I liked though. I liked how they were able to find the teens, but not without trouble or a fight. And that they weren't able to return them all. I like (in a sad, sympathetic way) how Alina's parents left her (she's better off this way anyway), and I like how in the end everything was back to normal. A bit cliche, true, but I like those endings ;-)

Overal, I enjoyed the books. They aren't a great Masterpiece, or something. But they were definitely enjoyable. And in the future (in a couple of years) I think I'll definitely will read them one more time.

I like to read about my favorite Buffy/Angel characters, and I like that they kept their natural Buffy-language going. Some things I knew they picked straight out of the series. But then, how much of a Geek am I for knowing this, right? Haha!

The end of the trilogy! Overall I enjoyed it, but I do have some nitpicks. First off, the last book ended with Buffy stepping through the portal and Giles going out and rage killing demons, this book starts with Buffy stepping through the portal but Giles doesn't go out and kill any monsters. Also, I was bummed that once again, Buffy and Angel were barely together in this book. What interactions they had were poignant and made my heart happy, but I was hoping for more. Also, Alina's level of Russian-ness changed depending on the scene; sometimes she barely spoke English, and other times she spoke English fluently. Also, the end seemed way too rushed. This book should have been about a hundred pages longer. I did love the parts with Faith though.

I read the trilogy in rapid succession so I'll just post the one review.

A decent romp with the Scoobie gang. At it's best characters were well portrayed and their interactions interesting. Unfortunately, the story dragged at times, and could easily have been edited (for the better) into a tale half as long.

Beware, the events take place between seasons 4 & 5 (IIRC) and are replete with spoilers.

Read in 2019, a fun revival for fans of the show's golden era.

Long way home is the last book in the Buffy and Angel trilogy Unseen by Nancy Holder and Jeff Mariotte.

Buffy and Angel have both enter a portal, a different one. But it led them in the same frightening reality. While looking for each other, Buffy have to fight a dragon, and an armor just to name a few. Once reunite, they must locate the missing teens and go back home to their own dimensions. Going back might not be that easy.

Really loved this trilogy.

Book 3 of the Unseen Trilogy. Best of the three. Buffy, Angel and Spike go through a portal to retrieve the missing kids from Los Angeles. Things go awry and Faith is brought in to bring them all back.

Picked up a little from the last book, if only because there was less tech sci-fi and less gang warfare. However, the plotting here just wasn't doing it for me. It felt like we took forever to get Buffy and Angel into the alternate world, and when they're there they once again just sort of meander around, and then start rescuing hostages with very little fanfare. Faith is introduced as a sort of deus ex machina to bring them home in literally the last 50 pages of the book.

Thoughts on the trilogy as a whole - it feels like, on paper, when you read the blurb, this whole series is really interesting. In reality, it feels like the writers just didn't really know how to go about expanding that idea into a novel, let alone three novels. So much meandering. So much back and forth.

And the concept of the 'Unseen' felt... weak? There were a couple of lines thrown in about characters feeling unseen, but not in a way that really felt thematically poignant or developed enough to even warrant throwing in, let alone enough to name the trilogy after it.

I think that if this had been one book, I might not have felt quite so negative towards it, but stretching it out over a trilogy just honestly made me quite resentful of how much time I was investing in it, sorry!

ORIGINAL REVIEW - 2 stars

Read 29/03/2013 - 07/04/2013

Honestly, I think it was a mistake to read all 3 parts of the trilogy in one go, because by this point I was getting pretty tired of the story. Either that or it really was just quite a poor conclusion. It feels like the story has been dragging on far too long, and it feels like some elements are really completely unnecessary. This one is ranked lower than the other two, because, in my opinion, it lost a lot of the characterisation, and the parts that did make the other two more enjoyable. This felt a lot more like "how do we wrap up a plot" rather than "how would Buffy and Angel solve this plot?"

And also, despite being (in total) almost 900 pages long, the conclusion still managed to feel rushed - there was detail of one rescue, and then about a page to explain how every other kid was then rounded up in quick succession.

Overall, the trilogy wasn't bad, necessarily, but could have been largely improved.

An anticlimactic end to a disappointing trilogy. The first two books were very slow and tedious reading, but I assumed they were leading up to a climax, but up until the last 50 pages the story seemedto be going nowhere. There certainly wasnt eniugh plot in the Unseen story to warrant three books. The weakest of all the Buffy and Angel tie-in novels I have read

It was great to finally finish this trilogy. It was a good ending to the series. It was a little boring at times, but it was really interesting reading about the alternate worlds the missing teens were on. The story did get a bit lagging towards the middle. Felt repetitive so it became harder to read a lot in one sitting. Still enjoyed it.

The final book in the trilogy, is better than the 2nd one. This series seemed to try to do too much at once. It used every character from the scoobies, to cordy and wesley to faith and kate. If you're only an average buffy fan I'd pass on this series....leave it to the diehard fans.

Buffy rides a dragon! Faith returns! Everyone I like is in this trilogy except Oz (although he is mentioned). Enjoyable if you love the Scooby gang as much as I do.
