Sacrifice: the thrilling conclusion to the Snow Queen series!

Rakel, once feared and exiled for possessing magic, is now hailed a hero. Leading resistance forces against the Chosen—an army of magic users that invaded her homeland—she is granted everything she has longed for: acceptance, a home, and the love of her friends. But the battle for her country has just begun.

The Chosen’s powerful leader, Tenebris Malus, has come north to aid his army. His troops pillage the villages and cities they cannot hold, and Rakel’s brother—the King—refuses to rule. Most troubling of all, Rakel—who has always loved her magic—sees great similarities between herself and the deadly Tenebris.

However, not all is lost as the Chosen Colonel Farrin Graydim questions his loyalties to his leader, and the attraction he holds for Rakel.

Can Rakel’s overcome her doubts and defeat Tenebris? Will Farrin choose to follow his heart or his loyalties?

THE SNOW QUEEN: SACRIFICE is a story of magic, love, and friendships. It takes place in the same world as the TIMELESS FAIRY TALES series, but occurs centuries prior.

This is not really a review as much as it is just a statement of fact. I finished this 2 book series and it was one of the better things I have read in the last 6 months, Heart of Ice (The Snow Queen Book 1) and Sacrifice (The Snow Queen Book 2) together comprise one of the best fantasy stories in years. The characters are wonderful, the story is full of all the things that make us love great stories and an epic ending. The fact these were both FREE on KU is just a bonus since I would have bought them anyway. i have yet to read anything of hers that was not totally entertaining. I started to sit down and comprise a review but figures that with 103 reviews and 98% of them 4-5 Star and the reviews I read were actually good that I could really not add a lot. I might copy this post out for Goodreads but another 5 Star review for Amazon does not really add anything :)

Again, I just wish there was more to the story so I could have more time with it! It was so fun!

I really enjoyed the power struggle and character development with Rakel and our main villain. That is always fun to read.

I felt the villain was a little too predictable and wished for more but I love brutality....as odd as that sounds.

I was a bit disappointed in the quick and easy flip it was for some characters to switch sides....really? that's it? that's all it took? Not gonna lie, I rolled my eyes a bit.

The romance was a bit too easy and fast for me although I loved the uncertainty of it all. I REALLY enjoyed where it came from and with who. YES!!!!

Overall I loved this 2 book set and enjoy the writing and world building this author creates.

Re-Read Review:
The audiobook version of this book is SO good! The narrators do such a good job at bringing this book to life! I especially liked the male narrator (blanking on his name).

Original Review:
K.M. Shea never disappoints! After blowing me away with Heart of Ice, I seriously couldn't wait until Sacrifice released. I went out and bought it the moment she announced it was available!

This book picks up where Heart of Ice left off. It carries the same, slightly darker tone than her other novels, but I still loved it! I loved Farrin's torn loyalties and the struggles that Rakel faces with wondering whether or not she will become just like Tenebris. Like Heart of Ice, this novel is a step up in character development and deep POV from most of K.M. Shea's previous novels, and it is exciting to see her growing in her craft. I can't wait to see what she writes next! :)

I can't say enough about how much I love all of K.M. Shea's novels. They are always fun, quirky reads. :)

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and since this duology basically is also a prequel to the timeless fairytale series, a series I'm really looking forward to, I was even more excited to finish reading Rakel's tale. Especially since I had the impression that quite a few amazing things were waiting for me in this book. I was prepared to read about romance, about magic and I knew for sure a big war was gonna end in this book.

I'm a sucker for romance. I love reading stories about characters coming together and finding out that they want to spend the rest of their lives together. However, I quite enjoyed how the romance in this book wasn't the focus of the story. It was there. It was clear that even Rakel was slowly warming up to her knight, even though she needed more time to feel the love than he did, but it was not what this book was about.

This book was about war and it was about what royals should actually be doing in wars, instead of hiding in the back, commanding their troops. It's quite easy to like Rakel. Not only because she doesn't want any of the power her brother offers her, but also because she understands what it means to love a kingdom and its people. She's not expecting anything in return. She doesn't blame them for everything that's been done to her. She loves. Unconditionally.

Just like in the first book the book creates the perfect mix of emotional scenes, tactical meetings and actual fight scenes. I'm usually not a big fan of long and detailed action scenes, since they're really hard to follow if you don't see images or videos while reading, but combined with the stakes and with how much we know about what the characters are gonna do and what their goals are even the fight scenes become quite interesting.

This was an interesting sequel, and it picked up from where the previous book ended. There was some character development and Rakel went through a considerable improvement. Her internal monologue and self-doubt were minimized, which made her more pleasant to read about.

But like in the last book, Farrin stole the limelight in this one as well. I saw the positive changes that he went through in his life, and his feelings for Rakel and the way he chose to express them was very sweet.

This book had more war strategies, spy missions, and twists compared to the last one. The relationships between all the characters also had a sense of depth. These things proved to be a major plus point for the storyline.

The book spoke about love, acceptance, and redemption; these messages were conveyed beautifully. The found-family trope is one of my favorites, and it was explored well in the book.

My only complaint is that it had some loose ends and that some characters' stories needed to be a bit more. Some of the answers were provided separately in a book of short stories, but I felt disconnected while reading them. I wish the author had found a way to include them in this book itself.

Overall, I would say that I enjoyed reading the book, and I recommend it to readers who enjoy fantasy novels with romance, a rag-tag group of friends, fairytale retellings, and some magical action.

☞ Trigger warnings:

This was a nice ending to the duology. I wish it was longer, and more in-depth but it was satisfying regardless. I hoped the villain would be more complex, but he was very predictable and one dimensional. I expected Farrin to change sides but that happened way too fast and for his entire regiment to flip to decide mid-battle was kind of ridiculous. I appreciated Farrin's sections about his internal struggle and it was great to see his P.O.V. and his character growth explored.

I love a good ending with a time-jump/lapse. It makes it richer when the characters have to pick up the pieces at the end and we see snippets of them coping with the fallout of the resolution.

WHAT A CONCLUSION!

I just knew I would love everything about this book! :)

I wasn't worried that Rakel will lose her sense of self. She's one character that has a strong mind and amazing willpower, so there wasn't any doubt in my mind. One tiny thing concerned me though. Surprisingly, it's her love life that I doubted. I wasn't very sure if they were on the same page. Anyway, it all worked out well for the both of them.

Ended like a fairy tale! I'm so glad I read this series!

“Stand proud, Snow Queen. You have no equal.”

Within two days of finishing Heart of Ice, I bought Sacrifice so I could continue the adventure of Rakel the Snow Queen. And let me say right away, I was not disappointed.
There was a lot of character growth, which was amazing especially since it was the second book. Also, the love story was super sweet. At times, I found myself with a silly smile on my face as a result of the relationship between Farrin and Rakel. It wasn’t sappy or cringe-worthy, it was just really nice and beautiful. And unlike the first book, Farrin is featured quite often with Rakel as well as by himself which helped me get to know and understand his character better. Likewise, there is a closer view of Tenebris, the villain. A few scenes that showed how he treated his soldiers really made me dislike him and want Rakel to defeat him. Further, Rakel’s inner struggle of whether or not she was becoming like Tenebris, created some tension which was good - it kept her character interesting and humble.
One small aspect that I didn’t enjoy, was the way the plot was laid out. It seemed like a continuous cycle of battle, rest, battle, rest, etc. Further, the dialogue between the fight scenes sometimes seemed a little unnecessary, but this had definitely improved since the first book.

“It seems you didn’t understand me,” Rakel said, adjusting her grip on his hand. She had to spit the words out around the pain that tore through her. “When I say that love is pure, I mean it stands unrivaled in its power.”

And finally, the ending… I loved it! Way to go KM Shea, you nailed it. Rakel made an honorable decision that made me respect her immensely. It also proved more than anything else that she wasn’t like Tenebris.
Overall, I highly recommend this book (and I suppose you can’t really read this book without reading the first one so I then recommend the first book too!). I really enjoyed this series by KM Shea and I am excited to discover other jewels she has created.

In the end, this wasn't a very satisfying story.

Rakel was too overpowered and virtuous. I'm not saying I need a wounded hero, or anti-hero - but her foot never slipped, her magic never failed. She never seemed to pay any substantial price.

The villain didn't matter. Rakel could turn him back and block his attacks. Graydim told her he'd send assassins - he didn't. He never made any substantial attack against the army that was with her, and all of his damage was off-stage, where we didn't have to worry about it. It just wasn't real. Our only glimpse of why he mattered was his general plan (enslave all non-magic humanity) and his goal (get this mirror, for reason we don't know or understand). Lots of failed foreshadowing opportunities there. We never knew why the mirror mattered, we never got more than a faintly icky feeling about it.

There were a few hiccups and bumps here and there, but in the end, the challenges didn't seem to matter that much. Wounds were healed with minimal scars, we all agree that Rakel is the awesome, amazing, loving Snow Queen, aaaand - all conflict ended.

I never got into Phile that much. (and I had trouble with the names Rakel and Phile in my head anyway - how are those pronounced? Ra-quel, Rack -el, Raw-kel? File, Phil? Phil-eh, File-eh?) There was an opportunity for something between her and Oskar that apparently was never worth pursuing.

The books were mostly: Here's how to fight if you have endless amounts of snow power.

I'll try one other book not in this series, but if it has the same problems, I'll be done with this author.

Tenebris has arrived, the dark shadow that has loomed over Verglas since the beginning of the war. His goals are threefold. Conquer Verglas, find the mirror, and kill the Snow Queen. He doesn't care how many he sacrifices to get what he wants.

Farrin Graydim's loyalties are stretched to the snapping point. All he really wants is a place where he belongs. Until now, that has been with his Commander, Tenebris, the man who saved him. Rakel is making him see things in a different light. But surely she would never accept a man with such a monstrous past?

Rakel's life has been turned on its head. Once feared, now the people all but worship her, rising up everywhere to fight in her name and under her flag. She has no idea what to do with their newfound respect and adoration. Rachel does not want power, but her brother the King, remains absent and fearful of her. Can she convince her brother to take hold of his place as King before the people try to raise her up in his place?

Sacrifice was even better than book one: Heart of Ice. Like the title suggests, sacrifice is the very core of this story. Rachel knows that to win this war she must lay everything down, perhaps even her life, but this wonderful girl never hesitates. for the love of her people she is willing to make any sacrifice necessary to ensure Verglas has a future.

I honestly can't see the reasoning behind all those five-star reviews. This duology is just bland.
After reading the Tainted Accords series and looking for something similar , this came as a recommendation. Boy, am I disappointed!
To start off, the main character...!!! Is there anything remotely likeable about her? She's pretty, yes we all got that; and tormented; - she's so good, she has no flaws. Okay, alright. But what else? No depth, that's for sure.
The author's writing is so eloquent and pretense it just severs most of the dialogues. The bits in italics, or the characters' inner musings are just ridiculous.
And don't even get me started on Farrin, who is, in my opinion, a completely ruined character.
To sum up, if you expect an exciting story with breathtaking battle descriptions, move on.
If you are an experienced reader and are searching for a fantasy romance, don't even bother.
Although, there was one line (repeated 3 or 4 times maybe) by Phile, which made me cackle, that gender-neutral thingy...

The absolute beauty of this series is indescribable. I read these at a time when I was feeling pretty hopeless not just from my own problems, but also because of what those I loved were going through. This series was a powerful reminder that there is always hope and that love will conquer hate. Ms. Shea, thank you for these wonderful books.

Better than the first! Another great, powerful female lead from Shea, with another lovable hero. My only complaint was that there were so many secondary characters that dialogue sometimes got confusing/dragged with all the character's adding their two bits. Still, another fun fantasy!

Shea completely enthralled me with this touching, humorous and action packed adventure! Her delightful characters continued to not only charm, but to bring forth moments of inspiration. She was able to craft a story that exemplifies love overcoming all. While in that same vein, she points to the fact that it is not our circumstances that determine our outcome but our choices. We must choose love, hope, faith and press on.
For those looking for a fun, light but action packed magical adventure, with a bit of romance dashed in; this one is for you!

This series overlaps with this author's fairy tale series. It could be considered a prequel but it isn't necessary to read prior to the other books unless you want to pick up on the subtle references you'll occasionally find.

I really enjoyed this book duet plus the extras given in a third book. I fell in love with all the characters.

What a thrilling second instalment in this Snow Queen series. After reading book 1, I charged straight into Sacrifice without pause. And I wasn't disappointed. There wasn't a thing not to like about Snow Queen, Rakel, except how hard she was on herself. I was entranced by the story, the characters, the world and the magic. I wonder how Rakel will save the kingdom and can she keep the love of her hero?

Nice sequel. I like the characters and the plot was good(if not predictable-but it is a fairytale retelling so i guess that is to be expected xD), however fairytale or not the dialogue was a bit too cliched some times(even for me xD). I liked both Farrin an Rakel as characters and I liked that it wasnt a insta-love, however the romance fell a bit flat(dont get me wrong they were a nice couple and some of the interactions was quite fun but it just felt like: I love you-a bit later: Oh i just realized that I love you too- okay thats good well lets become a couple and start saying cliche stuff to each other). Other than that it was a good book^^

I ADOOORED THIS BOOK

Steiner was a cinnamon roll 😻
His relationship with rakel in this book was BEAUTIFUL

Oskar remains the sweetest person on earth and he deserves the best

General halvor still remains a mystery to me.
I wonder what he whispered to rakel after she semi-died and saved the world.

I adore rakel and farrin together
They are actually one of the very best written OTP
I wish there was a wedding 😻
That would have been magical

Phile, the robber maiden friend who stole the heart of everyone.
I loved how she was-as she would call hersef- "a bosom friend- to rakel.
They're friendship was heart touching.

Lastly, I wanted to say that I need an EPILOGUE PLEASE

This was a nice wrap up to the series. It was nice to get some insight into the other side of the story. Heart of Ice was very Rakel-focused (makes sense, she is the protagonist) but, now that we know her very well, the other characters are given a voice in this book. I know the romance was one of the main points and, while it was tastefully handled, I much preferred reading about Rakel's magic and the public's reaction to this magic. I liked the balance between the different plot points and I felt all questions were answered. However, I tried my hardest... but I still can't get on with Phile. She needs to be quiet and let me think.

This is the daring sequel to K. M. Shea's Heart of Ice and the conclusion to the duology. You know, I very much like the Snow Queen story. It isn't one that's commonly told and, even then, it isn't typically a very happy story. Shea managed to maintain aspects of the fairy tale that make it the Snow Queen, but she used them to create a really cool world and a cast of characters who maintained hope and light where many Snow Queen stories get lost in the dreary dark.

I really enjoyed the plot of this sequel. Not only did we build up to an appropriate climax, but there was a satisfying resolution as well. I tell you what! In the aftermath of the climax, I was wound tight! Shea had me near tears! I can be at peace with the way things ended, though there was one cheap shot thrown in that kind of disheartened me. Anywho, the whole story was engaging and well-paced. I read most of it in a day and found myself trying to puzzle out the solution to their problems before Shea's solutions revealed themselves. An engaging story line and a satisfying end to the duology.

We saw a really cool array of characters, both returning as well as a few new ones, in this book. I loved seeing the relationship between Rakel and Farrin kind of bloom a little. I loved getting to see more of Farrin's background, where he'd come from. Tenebris proved to be a formidable foe--though, to be honest, I'd have liked to see more of his backstory. And, come to think of it, whatever happened to Sunnira? There's a story there--where those two came from and how they rose to power, why they searched out the mirror, etc. Anywho, Rakel is surrounded by a beautiful family of characters that just warmed my heart. Kai is precious and I adore him completely. Steinar, oh Steinar, he just melts my heart into a giant puddle. I would have loved to delve deeper into that man's character. I loved Halvor and Oskar, their devout loyalty and honor. Even Phile kind of made me smile with her fierce loyalty and quirky personality. Snorri and all of the nifty magic users really worked to make the story itself magical. The characters were the most heart-warming part of the whole tale, I think.

This story had just as much variety in setting as the first. I did find my bearings a little difficult to maintain, but the book was pretty clear about which cardinal direction we were moving to and from for the most part. I wasn't bored with the landscape, though I did kind of miss Rakel's ice castle! I had hoped we'd see it again. I really enjoyed how each different village and city felt unique and different, but all part of the same nation. I loved the vivid descriptions of the winter and that slippery time in between winter and spring. Well-done!

I only found one error in the book, but it was minor and easily dismissed. The writing was otherwise well-done. The story was well-paced, and all issues were addressed, neatly tied up by the end. Overall, a pleasing read and I would certainly recommend it! I look forward to trying out more of Shea's work.

There was some mild violence--they are fighting a war--but none graphic and all very appropriately handled, in my opinion. There was no foul language. There was some very sweet, very mild romance, but nothing more explicit than a kiss. There were some allusions to slavery and a rather merciless, hateful villain, but I'd feel comfortable giving this to a pre-teen.

This was the absolute PERFECT conclusion to the Snow Queen Duology. In my honest and humble opinion Shea couldn’t have written it any better. There was beauty and love, hope and Shea’s personal spark of humor, and the quintessential amount of sacrifice and despair to make the reader feel all of the feels. I laughed, I smiled, I cried (in both happiness and despair) and I finished overcome with the realization that Sacrifice was one of the absolute best concluding novels in a series that I have ever read.

Princess Rakel and her Verglas Army are attempting to take back the conquered pieces of their kingdom but Tenebris—the vicious magical leader of the Chosen—is relentless. He’s got his eyes, army, and magic set on domination and the magical mirror hidden somewhere in Verglas and the only thing standing in his way is the Snow Queen. And unless Rakel can come up with a plan before spring, the Verglas army may fall. But lucky for them Rakel has a few ideas and a mind for strategy and if she can set plans into motion maybe…just maybe…they can stop Tenebris and the Chosen forever.

Again, this series has sooooooo many amazing characters. Each of them completely unique and masterfully written. Be it Ferrin and his unwavering love and loyalty to Rakel, King Steiner who was a perfect combination of strength, repentance, self insecurity, and extremely just, or Tenebris who was despicably evil, beyond greedy, and the perfect kind of villain that the reader can’t wait to see get the punishment that they deserve. There are just sooooooo many amazing characters and they all work perfectly together to create one amazing story.

So if you love a great story that will make you laugh out loud one moment, cry the next, and then in the next breath experience joy and hope for the future, where the characters take center stage and make the story and world come alive, where the magic can be both absolutely deadly and completely beautiful then you just need to read The Snow Queen!

A great read

This was an Beautiful story, where Rakel the long exiled and proclaimed Snow Queen uses her magic and the help of her friends and comrades to destroy a terrible evil in the form of Tenebris and his chosen army for the lives of every citizen in Verglas and the World. But Rakel also has to deal with the Sole Reason why Tenebris has invaded and that is a Mirror that houses a formidable Evil within and can not be destroyed even by Rakel who is the strongest Mage in the world, this causing a problem on how to stop Tenebris and people like him from ever using it. Throwing in a handsome colonel and his love for a certain princess, Rakel experiences new and powerful emotions that fuel her desire to protect those around her (her family). I loved every minute of this story it has everything that I wanted and even so much more it was wonderfully written and don't like to read. Are you very much recommend the story as it shows the true power of friendship and the love and respect you can experience when you open yourself up too people who can truly show you that you're not alone in the world but are valued and wanted above all.

A great story. And towards the end I even cried because as I followed the story I felt that I was apart of it in a sense, that when the sacrifice happened I could not bear it so I have to let out something to express my anguish over what happened. But I am so glad that it turned out well in the end and everything was as it should.
