Karina Espinosa is a Colombian-American author best known for the Mackenzie Grey series, the Blood Weaver Trilogy, and her latest romantasy hit, The Dragon’s Ballad. When she’s not writing fierce heroines and magical chaos, she’s globe-trotting, bingeing Asian dramas, or teaching college students how to write essays—with a coffee in hand and fictional body count on the rise.
Follow her for more coffee-fueled chaos and character heartbreak.
When Mackenzie Grey left the Brooklyn Pact, she moved to the Los Angeles. She was employed by SIU (Supernatural Investigative Unit) to keep the weird things away from the humans. Her job helped her grow in power and strength. During this time, she wasn't alone. Her partner and lover throughout the year was Roman, a sexy vampire.
She was free.... for a while. It was only a matter of time before the Summit got her scent, and she needed to run again. But she can't run forever. She needed to make a stand for herself and all the other Lunas. They were meant for more than just being maids and breeders.
Due to the discovery of her lineage, she's wanted by every pack. There's a lot of action involved, and Sebastian and Jonah try to help her in their own way. The Alpha and Beta are still interested in her, but I'm not sure who to lean on. The attraction is there, but it's definitely not the first thing she focuses on.
I loved seeing all the characters from the previous book. Mackenzie is still loud, sarcastic, and aggressive. I can't wait to read the next book. Karina Espinosa did a wonderful job creating a story about girl power.
The story pick up right in the end of second book!!!
Kenzie has embrace her new reality has a werewolf! After a year training, working with all types of supernatural creatures she is more and more confident!
In this book her transformation is not only physical but also mental! She got herself a friend with benefits and a job that she likes...
INITIAL THOUGHTS As I began reading this book, I was really looking forward to catching up with the kick butt Mackenzie Grey again and to discover what has been going on in the Brooklyn Pack and how Mackenzies decisions in Shift have affected them.
THOUGHTS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK At 12% I was pleased to be realising that Mackenzie Grey was still the kick butt, full of attitude, wolf from bk#1. She is still very independent and wanting things doing her way. At 54% wow! there's even more pack politics for Mackenzie to contend with. There is also the return of pack hunks Sebastian, Jonah, Jackson! A surprise "mate" for Jackson to be revealed too!
REVIEW I received a free e-copy of this book from it's author Karina Espinosa, in exchange for my honest opinion and review. I think the cover for this book perfectly fits in with the cover for SHIFT, with the similarities of the blurred effect. The female on the cover, Mackenzie seems to be trapped and trying to push her way out, so that fits great with the title of CAGED. Would the cover of this book make me pick it up from a bookstore shelf? On the cover alone - Yes! I would be curious about the female on the cover and want to find out who/what was CAGED and why! So this book literally picks up where the previous book ended. Mackenzie is on the run, and with the help of head vampire of New York, Lucian she has a new name and identity documents to go with it. Though the name Lucian has given definitely isn't inconspicuous! Mackenzie is in her element busting criminal supernaturals along with a vampire (possible #bookboyfriend material) called Roman. The nickname Roman gives Mackenzie is "Ace" and it seems to stick with others around her calling her that too. It's during an operation to rescue a large number of kidnapped Succubi that Mackenzie rescues an eleven and a half year old called Emma. Emma is a Luna, her mother a Succubi, her father a wolf. Both parents are dead, so this presents Mackenzie a quandary....where should she take the young Luna? Eventually it is decided she will take the young Luna, Emma to the Desert Wolves. Once with the Desert Wolves she is informed that they cannot just take charge of this Luna. Emma must be taken to The Summit and they will place her where they think is best. All this interaction around wolves has Mackenzie/Ace missing "home" even more. It also opens old wounds as to the life a Luna is expected to live. Luna's live a life of servitude, always deferring to the male wolves and of course their Alpha in everything. It is thinking about this injustice against all Luna's that changes Mackenzie mind and has her returning to LA. Mackenzie is on a crusade, almost suffragette like, to improve the lives of Luna's - not just the ones she has met in the Brooklyn Pack but all Luna's. In this book we learn more about the Luna's both in the Brooklyn Pack and from other packs. The problem is Mackenzie doesn't realise how far certain packs go to rule their Luna's, that it's not merely housewifely duties but that the Luna's are submitted to justice, and harsh punishments are doled out by their own pack Alpha for any perceived wrong doing. It seems that a few Luna's have started to think the same way as she does, they are tired of the drudgery, and seeing to any whim or fancy of their particular Alpha. The question is are the Luna's prepared to take action if/when it is needed? Are they willing to risk harsh repercussions and possible death? Are any of them prepared for the aftermath? Mackenzie also underestimates her own value as a Luna, a very special Luna. Mackenzie has a very prominent parentage that makes her a very hot commodity to many packs. Mackenzie has yet to learn first hand how far certain Alpha's will go to get her to join their pack or to what lengths a few of the Alpha's will go to to have her as their mate. So because Mackenzie returns to L.A. we get to catch up with the Brooklyn Pack. Alpha Sebastian is still being pursued by the eager Luna Vivian, who takes great delight in rubbing this fact in Mackenzie's face. Both Sebastian and Jonah are still as protective of Mackenzie as they always have been, offering her a place to stay where she can be safe from other Alpha's and their packs trying to coerce and/or force Mackenzie to be their new mate/Luna. Mackenzie also gets chance to catch up with her human friend Amy, though things are somewhat awkward initially. There's lots of pack politics, orders and rules from The Summit flying about in this book too. So did I enjoy the book? I totally loved it. There really is so much crammed in this book! Everything from love, romance and flirting etc, to tragedy and violence. Along with some pack politics and we learn how brutal The Summit and their rulings can be. Would I recommend the book? Yes, if you love the shifter genre, then this is a must read for you! I would say it is easily comparable to Rachel Vincent's Shifter's series and how much I adored that! Would I want to read another book in this series? Yes! I'd read it now if it were available. I have grown attached to the Brooklyn Pack and would also like to learn more about the other Packs, either in this series or perhaps a spin off series? Would I want to read other titles by Karina Espinosa? I will be definitely taking a closer look at Karina's other series Sin's Of The Fallen.
FINAL THOUGHTS I could seriously ramble on forever about this book and series, so I guess I should limit myself to just one word? Amazing!!
So i didn't know if i wanted to continue on with this series. The first book didn't leave that much of an impression. However this one was better. So Mackenzie ran away from the Brooklyn Pack to Los Aneles where she continued her goal of working in law enforcement just more on the supernatural level. She's free, semi-dating a vampire, and living life. However she's found and decided to go back to Brooklyn where now everyone know who she is and want a piece. A lone wolf Luna is just not possible in their world. In coming back she's mire defiant as ever and many things happen including a revolution of the current luna's as well as retaliation from someone for that revolution......She's prety much to blame and screwed. Guess I'll read the next book.
This book really picked up the pace in this book and is definitely setting the story up regarding Mackenzies birth family and the Lunas. I love Bash’s character in this book and that you can see he has her best interests at heart and how conflicted Jonah is
I can't say enough how much in love I am with this series, it's different from what Ive read before. The drama, the suspense, the emotions!! There's no way you can put this book down once you get started. Karina Espinosa has a way with words that sweeps you into her stories and you just want to live there forever. Mackenzie Grey tries to run and avoid her life but that doesn't work out very well for her, not when people start to realize who she really is. We meet new characters and lose ones we've come to love but this is an amazing tell of Urban Fantasy and one of the first Ive read. I always had a love for shape shifters, especially wolves and Karina just fills my obsession with this series. I am still Team Jonah at this point, my heart really goes out to him, he's so sweet. I really love me a good love triangle but I always go for the underdogs. This is def a book you want to read over and over again because you wont be able to get enough of these characters, except for Roman. He needs to take his vampire butt somewhere else LOL
Now that everyone knows she's the kings daughter, everyone is after her. The alpha from Chicago is the worst and is the one who disfigured Rachel. He kidnaps her, but she is rescued. But the alpha Logan gets away. She ralleys the Lunas around her and they go after Logan, and kill him. She is taken to the Estate and caged to await her punishment. Wolves in the name of her father the king kill all the Lunas involved, and try to kill her. Kenz, Jonah and Sebastian crash the Summit meeting and she meets her father by video. He orders the three to Scotland.
This is the second book in the Mackenzie Grey series, and as such, you will need to have read Shift for it all to make sense.
We return to Mackenzie when she is living her new life in Los Angeles; all seems good and she even has a f*ck buddy. Unfortunately, Roman is more than happy to remain her buddy, whilst Mackenzie is starting to feel the need for more. However, that aside, life is good for her. She is working for the SUI and loving it. The bubble must burst though, and in this case, it takes the form of Emma, an eleven-year-old girl who is so like Mackenzie, it is funny! Mackenzie's scent is still on Emma when she reaches The Summit, and because of that, wolves are dispatched to LA to find her. Mackenzie is given the option of running again, but instead, she returns to make a stand of her own.
This book is darker than the first, in pretty much every way. Mackenzie has to deal with the fallout that occurred after she ran. Lives have moved on, and relationships have changed. Friendships and hatred are renewed as Mackenzie once again becomes the wild card in Pack politics. Sebastian and Jonah both still want Mackenzie, but she has her own issues, wants and needs to deal with too. And, of course, these two don't exactly shine as they both act like idiots in various parts!
There is a trigger warning about an incident which happens to Mackenzie, as well as a traumatic ending.
Once again, very well written with a smooth pace building up to a climactic ending. As with the first book, this wraps up the second instalment nicely whilst still leaving you definitely wanting more! Thoroughly enjoying this series and looking forward to reading more about Mackenzie.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Jun 19, 2016
Book 2 was just as good as book 1! I don't understand about people complaining in other reviews that Makenzie is so immature. The character is in her young 20s and had an awesome sense of humor! I think the character is hilarious.
Okay now glad I read on because overall this book packed a hell of a punch, and that ending had me hyped.
Still....I could really do with out the annoying romance going on & honestly just wanted to gloss over any of those sections when I was reading (which is probably not a great feeling to have when reading a pnr romance, but I digress. )
Actually no, in terms of romance I don't care who Kenzie ends up with bc both guys are a no go for me- but will def read on for the over arching plot.
I had no idea where book 2 would take me but I never expected to end where it did!?! WOW! Just...wow! My mind is spinning and I don't want to give away spoilers! I'm torn because I need to divulge my theories but if you haven't read this book yet...gasp...I can't! Just read it...right now! Well book one first then just keep moving on to book two. Make sure to buckle up because this ride is wicked in all the best ways! I LOVE Karina's writing style. I couldn't stop reading or read fast enough! She paints a vivid picture oozing with emotions! I personally love the witty remarks and side comments from our favorite heroine. I laughed as often as my heart stilled with suspense. Which was the whole story. I'm not one for reading about overly power-hungry crazy women but this book adds class to it. Too many "heroines" are just flat out annoying but Mackenzie is painted with good humor. Roman...I love him. He's a great addition to the storyline. I'd like to know Lucien's story and how he plays into Mackenzie's beginning. I guess we'll find it out later. Lastly, Jonah and Sebastian make me crazy and not necessarily a good crazy. The first book I liked both of them equally but right now Bash is so far ahead of the game. Jonah comes across as weak and seriously what he does to our girl towards the end, makes me growl.
I'm still annoyed at the simultaneous slut shaming while also trying to leverage the lots of hot supernatural guys want to bleep the main character and have a hard time (pun intended) controlling their nature etc etc thing. I also find the supposedly feminist bent overly simplistic (feminism should be more complicated than having the right to do violence to other people). Kenzie makes stupid impulsive, thoughtless decisions and the author throws out the word "privilege" a few times, and unsurprisingly people get hurt. I'm bothered by the token incision l inclusion of a lesbian in a weak attempt to counter the oozing heteronormative main character's neverending hyper-masc prospects, as well as the use of rape as a plot and character development device.
All of that said, this book to a turn at the end towards large-scale supernatural war/politics, which seems like it will continue to be entertaining, despite the series faults.
I enjoyed the book mostly, but I noticed a lot of inconsistencies. Blue was made out to be “strong” after she ordered Jonah and Sebastian to get Mackenzie’s clothes for her in the first book, but then she seemed so “weak” in this book. Also, Mackenzie annoyed me so much in this book. I couldn’t see why Jonah and Sebastian are so obsessed with someone who acts like she’s twelve, curses constantly, and literally never shuts up. Her personality was fine in the first book, i don’t see why she had to change. She reminded me of an obnoxious loud person. Some things just didn’t make sense either. Such as, why would she want to leave the protection of the pack immediately after being captured and nearly raped by the Chicago pack? A few things just didn’t add up or make sense.
Oh I can't believe I have to wait for the next book to come out. The ending to this one blew me away. Just wow.
Mackenzie is so very strong. She is strong physically and she has the strength of her convictions. In the first book, Shift (which you have to read first), and this book all Mackenzie has wanted and fought for was her freedom. What Mackenzie did not have, was foresight or experience and unfortunately that ends in a heart breaking and tragic result. I loved this book even more than the first and I cannot wait for the next one. The revolution has started, blood has been shed and the line in the sand has been crossed.
Damn!!!! Man I'm all over the place with this book ugh!!! Man I know this book is about the oppression, but dang it hits you in the feels, I am like literally upset at what just happened, and I hope everyone freaking dies. I'm even hating the guys, to be honest the vamps are the only guys I like at the moment. They seem how the others were treated, I'm come on, get ur heads out ur asses. Anyways I will continue on in hopes many will die.
This book was action packed and tense. Warning, may have triggers for some people. Mackenzie gets herself in even more hot water than you can possibly imagine. Book starts with her new life on Los Angeles, then her eventual return to New York. Lots of blood she'd and boundaries tested.
Wow wow wow brilliant. There are books that you read and wish you could re read then again for the very first time.... Ooooh this book is so one of those!! Mackenzie is back and she is all grown up. Fantastic action packed heart wrenching page turning read. Omg its awesome x
OMG!!! Such a good read Read in under 24hrs, I couldn't put it down. Vision quest complete, Mackenzie is now at one with her wolf and after a year in Los Angeles she heads back to New York. The plot line is gripping, with some shocking results!!!
Go girl!!!! Dit deel is spannend maar ook heftig. Er gebeurt best veel maar de hoofdpersoon wordt steeds sterker. Het einde is geweldig! Ik ga gelijk door naar deel 3!! Ik ben zo benieuwd welke kant het op gaat!
Yeah I see were this is going. Head strong female, who bows to no one. Yet part of a race who's females are oppressed.
She runs away cause she will never be subjugated like the other females of her race. Has some time to come into herself then, BAM!
It's yours destiny to save all the females of your race! Only you can do it! No one else, and you know it!
Randomly collects allies to complete this epic quest. The succubus she saves from being ttrafficked are one. Probably the vampires too cause that's who she has been with for the past year. Not sure who else cause I bailed when MC tries to give the little girl to the nice wolf pack and the alpha lady's all "only you can save her"
Gag 🤮
It just feels so weak! In the first book she finds herself face to face with others of her kind for the first time ever and spends how many days with them?
She speaks to a total of TWO lunas, one sweet, one a bitch. She sees a tiny bit of how they are treated and it sucks hairy balls. Cook, clean, pop out babies, obey. That's a load of bullshit right there.
I get that shit needs to change. I don't get why it falls to the MC to do it? What in the hell does she know about being raised and living with you and your entire gender subjugated and lessened to that degree? She grew up strong in a good family, went to college, got a good job wprking towards a good career then spent a couple weeks skimming the surface of werewolf life, sees practically nothing of of the Lunas but now she's gonna be the champion of their freedom!?
I get you don't need to be abused as a child to fight against child abuse. You don't need to come from a home of violence to stand against family violence.
But if you were to listen to a speech on family violence, on the pain and fear and life of it. Would you want to hear it from someone who has never dealt with it before, ever. Or a person who was born into that hell, who was raised in the centre of the storm and who, after years and years of abuse, through their own strength, survived it and now stands scared yet free a champion of the cause fighting to free others from the same hell.
The MC has no experience with the lifestyle she is fighting against so it just seems weak and shallow.
It would have been better if the MC was born a Luna, her whole life being beaten down, finding her freedom, and then going to free her fellow Lunas from the same.
Running from her past she ends up on the west coast in LA with a vamp, Roman. Her first stop a vision quest, that leaves her reeling on what it all means.
Now she is working with a special unit for her kind. Kenzie picks up a female werewolf on her last bust, that needs a pack to protect her. Her first thought is Sebastien, but she can't. Instead she heads to the Mojave dessert for the female alpha. The alpha agrees to take her to the Summit and find her a pack.
The Brooklyn Pack gets Kenzie's sent and now are hot on her tail. She is a hot commodity, everyone wants her, because of what she brings to the table. A title. Only she doesn't know that yet, until old man Caldwell drops the bomb on her lap. The pack life is not what Kenzie wants, she wants her freedom. And she isn't going to get that with a pack. She is going to get maid work and humping. No thanks. She has her own agenda, Revolution. Can she pull it off or will her emotions get in the way?
This is another fast paced book, that will have you laughing at how Kenzie reacts to certain wolfs and other species. She has grown up, but not and adult yet. She is coming into her own, giving the males a run for their money. I will admit, I liked Duke and hope he is in other books. You really learn about Sebastien and Jonah too and how they love her differently. Bash loves her for who she is and would be a strong partner for her, while Jonah is content to love her but stand behind her, protecting her and keeping her safe in his bubble.
i love the growth snd development in this book, the furthering of the world building and character dynamics, and the new characters that were added to the roster in book two!
bash and jackson’s character growth in this book were some of my favorite parts, and i love the connection mackenzie shares with roman as well and how her time in LA shaped her for what was to come!
also if homegirl doesnt become the alpha of a pack of lunas after everything is done that would just be wrong. i love how she keeps fighting for equality and freedom for the lunas and how they all were willing to rally together with her.
the development of the magic system from species and regions to specifics and folklore was really interesting! west vs east coast and additionally the european council’s stand on things is interesting. fuck everyone in the Chicago pack though. they are the worst. i struggled through chapter 16. it was written well but HOLY SHIT was i ready to wolf out and beat them up myself.
jonah was kind of an ass this book but thats kind of to be expected. he was too “book one dain aetos” in the first boo but his understanding was what mackenzie’s POV focused on, so it made sense that his “dain” tendencies would get uglier in book two.
the connection with emma (baby wolf) is really special and i am interested to see how her bond with Mackenzie, and now Amy too will shape her as she grows up.
i’m glad jonah and bash came through for her at the end. can’t wait to jump right into book 3
This series is so unpredictable that I have no idea how things are supposed to go. Things keep getting heaped onto Kenzie and what just happened at the end was ridiculous. It doesn’t make sense to
Also in book 1 they could compel, but none of that happened in this book. There were several situations where it would have been useful.
I kind of feel like this book was all over the place. What kept happening to Kenzie, event after event, was just...too much. She hasn’t had a break, she’s interested in a few people but nothing has happened really in what feels like a relationship.
I really like Roman the most, but the further we get in the book the less he is in it.
I’m not sure I want to continue this series. Yes I am interested in what happens next but I’m not too thrilled with all that’s happening. I’m getting way too many mixed signals. The writing is good though.
When I was looking for another shifter story/series to read/listen to I saw this series and noticed that it has a lower amount of reviews then I’m use to with a series…I try or purchase….but what ratings it does have are High…I took a chance and OMG…this series has some of the BEST WRITING/STORY TELLING…I have experienced in a long time…The Author has a magnificent way of bringing these Characters together and allowing the Lead to just Blow me away/aggravate/love/hate/and learn to understand why she does what she does…Makenzie Grey is such an amazing Character - with the Way she STANDS up for what she believes in NO MATTER the consequence & the way she is written makes ME feel like I am standing right beside her and going through everything with her-I love her HIGHS & cried and many lows she goes through. Her Friends and different co-workers are just so well written - I feel like they are my friends also-Greys independent attitude and her Real Struggles of coming to terms with her being a wolf and with what her true heritage is…is just a fantastic world I got lost in…I cannot wait to read/listen more …The Narrator is One of the BEST! I hope more people discover this series and character - so many are missing out on a WONDERFUL shifter series!!!
