Anna McCormick seems like a cliché from her basic coffee orders to her relentless drama; however she is more than meets the eye. Join the journey of Anna and Trevor Sullivan through the laughs, tears and heartbreak. Meet the Clairetown crew - each character is more interesting than the next! Warning: you may not be able to put this book down! Anna McCormick is every girl after a break up- she is vulnerable and seeks attention in the wrong places. She is easy to love and hate at the same time. Trevor Sullivan is almost too good to be true. He seems like he is perfect on the surface, but there is much more to him than meets the eye. Benji Shaw is the "perfect" boy next door. He has a bit of a hero complex and wants to fix everyone's problems. Tanya Rosen is the quintessential popular girl- everyone thinks she has so much confidence but really she is just as insecure as the next girl. The book takes an unexpected turn and I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. 'Hot Mess' by Madeline A. Rosenberg is book one in the "Tragic Love" series. This romance book story is of very young love and kind of remind me of my old school days were one day the hottest girl in our school was with one boy and then next day deep in a relationship with another boy. This story did keep you reading to see what was going to happen next. I would say this was a guilty pleasure read on how the young people seem to date and what goes through their minds. Anna was a main character in this book and she was very popular with the guys and seem to be somewhat spoiled and not sure what she wanted. This story did move forward some to when they were somewhat older but I didn't see to much change for Anna. This book also had good secondary characters that you got to hear/read what was happening to them...so that was a nice change. We didn't just have the main characters point of view. I personally have a hard time trying to decide on a rating.... between 3.5 or 4 stars. Some parts were really great and some parts I just liked but I kept thinking that it is because I am not a young reader for which this book would a ideal story...but overall I enjoyed it. So glad to have the chance to read and review this book.
Wow what a book. I am still shocked at how Hot Mess ended and I am trying best to come up with an awesome review for this awesome book. Written by Madeline Antonia Rosenberg, Hot Mess is a charming and enjoyable read about young love and the consequences of young love in todays society. This book was so special and it captivated me. Let me tell you, I devoured Hot Mess like I was on crack and I wanted to find out more and more. I was not disappointed at all and found myself actually thinking about this book after finishing it proving it to be so memorable to me.
Hot Mess centers around four characters, Anna(the girl who loves being in relationships), Benji(the player), Trevor(the nice guy) and Tanya(the popular girl) as they each experience the trials and tribulations of life, young love and relationships. It was so ironic because this book reminded me of the times when I was a teenager going through young love and relationships. It was so reminiscent of those days which made me smile a lot I experienced every emotion with Hot Mess. It made me laugh. It made me smile. It made me cry. It made me even fall in love with the plot. I do not normally read YA/NA but I am so glad that I gave a chance on this book because this book was just perfect. There was so much. My gosh, the drama grabbed my attention and the angst in this book caused my heart to pump a lot. My eyes were just glued to Hot Mess and my only goal was to find out what happens next. Even the cover just grabbed me. The lone girl looking at the mess in her closet reminding us that the book is truly about the mess we create in our lives. Madeline really nailed by capturing the essence of the story.
As I believe the characters make the book. You can have an awesome story but have characters that suck. Not this book because the characters each had such a dynamic and central part to the story itself which I loved. The drama between the characters was just so well written. Some characters were awesome and I loved for example Benji. I loved him. Some characters I just wanted to slap them to their senses lol like Anna and Tanya. They needed a good beating. But I loved that the author was able to capture their insecurities and vulnerabilities to give an edge to the story. Although I got confused with the shift of characters and scenes, I was able to adjust as I got into their stories.
Hot Mess is truly a fascinating story and I am so glad that I was able to read this story. It was truly an awesome journey and I cannot wait for more from Madeline Antonia Rosenberg.
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.
This story is a total teen after school special movie. I actually got hooked into the storyline. It hits the spot about what goes on in the minds of today's young adults. With the exception of the tragedy that happens among the characters. I cried my ass off visioning the outcome of such tragedy. I liked the story all together except for the ending. It left me with the thought of "wth?" The story does jump around a lot which being an avid reader I adjusted. Being a mom of four I totally get the self centered minds of young adults so this story was right on.
Let’s begin with the cover artwork. We are met with a cover that does do justice to the book’s title. With clothes hanging all over the place, the one word description that comes to my mind is: “Mess. What a mess!” And if I allow myself the freedom to extend the book’s title to include the young lady, standing with her back to us, arms akimbo, I would anticipate that she is the cause of this book’s title being, H-O-T M-E-S-S.
And if you will permit me to keep playing word games, by exchanging the letter “M”, for a letter “N”, I now have
“H-O-T-N-E-S-S.”
The curious thing about my word game is that nothing could be further from the truth. What this book is NOT, is hotness. It’s not hot, it’s not erotic, and it’s not graphic. There are no graphic descriptions of people having sex, not even one.
So, if you allow me to be frank, the title of this book and its cover don’t attract the author’s intended audience. The content of this book is tailor made for a small niche audience, people in the age range from 17 – 23. Under that age, yes, even at age 16, this book will not resonate with you. At age 24, you really need to move on with your life.
The book deals with that terrifying feeling of becoming a grownup, but not quite having everything figured out yet. This is a book for the misfits, those people who are having problems growing up. One and one, two and two, the numbers just aren’t adding up.
You’re trying to figure out who you are. You are still allowing yourself to be defined by the way others see you. It’s still important to be cool, to be admired, to be pretty, to have a boyfriend or have a girlfriend. You just want to belong to something bigger than yourself. You want to be loved, and to give your love in return.
And of course, you make mistakes. Genuinely honest mistakes. Some mistakes you learn from. Other mistakes cost dearly. They leave you badly scarred, emotionally, physically, for life.
This is author Madeline Rosenberg’s debut novel. At age 24, working with her grandmother, she’s given readers a look into the world she has recently emerged from. She writes in the language forms that teens and young adults will recognize, relate to, and feel comfortable with.
And yes, she uses vulgar, profane language when the situation calls for it. She uses it sparingly, but if you find vulgarity offensive, then you should avoid this book. It’s because her vulgarisms are of high quality. It must be her grandmother’s influence as her editor. (I smile as I say this)
It’s the language of Facebook, the language of text messages, and the language of Caller ID. It’s the language of teens making decisions that only teens and young adults have to make. Examples? Let me give you only three examples:
1. “I hope you’re on birth control.” 2. “If I control my eating, I can control my life.” 3. “I know I shouldn’t have done that, but I did anyway.”
What stands out the most to me in a book like this, is the sense of urgency that permeates the narrative. Everything is of the utmost importance. That lends itself to the multiple first person limited POV that Rosenberg uses as a narrative tool. We have unreliable narrators. Are things really the way they see them?
In other words, these are young people who are trying to make sense of the world in which they live. It’s a wild ride, a real rollercoaster of emotions and events and changes and friendships and relationships.
Why is it like this? Because our protagonists are in a state of becoming. They are becoming grownups, like me, like you. We were once like them, and if they are lucky, they will find a way to avoid becoming the grownups you and I became. They belong to a different time and a different age. They are products of their time, just as we are products of our time.
So, let me conclude. This is beautiful: it’s tragic, it’s heartbreaking, it’s heartwarming, it’s uplifting. Like I said, it’s a real rollercoaster. So, if you’re going to read this book, just make sure that you are the right person to go on the ride…
Meet the awesome foursome from Clairetown. Anna McCormick got issues about her social media status (she's on the phone every minute checking her messages!) and had boys who adored her, but she still didn't trust her own judgment. Boyfriend material Trevor Sullivan might had been the guy for her but turned out, there was something else she wasn't aware about him. Benji Shaw was the the one guy every girl wanted to make out with while Tanya Rosen was the insecure ex. Each had issues on his own, and each had issues with the other.
I thought this book was good, given that the characters somehow represent the youth of today - aggressive, insecure, impetuous, passionate, go-getter. Anna was the type of girl who fished for compliments, who wanted people to like her, who was always on her Facebook and social media accounts because that's where she found comfort and solidity. She was in a relationship with Trevor and had some falling out, and somehow she couldn't get a grip on her life when it came to breakups. Tanya, on the other hand, was everything Anna despised, and vice versa. The boys Trevor and Benji were more pleasing and lovable, in my opinion, because they got the personalities you wouldn't expect to love. Together they got the dynamics that can ignite and explode into something dramatic and feral.
Just like the title of the book, the characters here are all a hot mess. I seriously couldn't stand them, except for Trevor who got the tragic part of the story. But Anna McCormick? Wow! I don't know if I'm going to pity her or not. While it's true that she's got a lot of issues going on with her life, she's got that attention-seeking attitude that I really wasn't happy about. I don't know how to feel about the ending though.. I thought there was still something missing or lacking, something that Anna should have gone through, or something that she and Tanya had realized after the tragedy they experienced.
So far, given this mad feeling I got towards Anna and Tanya and this heart-wrenching feeling for Trevor and Benji, I can say that they really got me worked up. So did I like the book? Yes.. Was it a hot mess? Totally!
Talk about a crazy Rollercoaster ride.........especially with Anna, this girl is wired differently. The ups and downs really are a great lead up to the ending. Great start to the series
First of all I want to thank the author for sending me her book to read and review. I have to say that I didn't like this book but I don't want to focus on what I didn't enjoy, I prefer to tell what can be improved. 1) There are many characters. The main character is Anna, I hated her but that's positive. She is so well written that made me angry every time she took a bad decision, I felt for her while she was falling apart but hated how naive she was. I think that Trevor, Benji and Tanya description need more work because I would like to know how they turned up to be like that. Maybe there were too many characters and they took space from the main ones. 2) There isn't a real plot. I think that nothing really happen in the book other that all the dramas. It should me more depth. 3) POVs. They were too many and it was hard to follow the story at first. It would be better to have just two POVs every chapter.
In the end I have to say that I'm a writer too and I read a lot and even if I don't like this book I want to congratulate with the author because she was able to create a new original story that made me think. This is my honest review, I'm not leaving a rating because it wouldn't bring the author rating down and it wouldn't be fair. There is a lot of potential for a sequel that I'm sure will be better.
Hot Mess is exactly that. Anna McCormick is what guys want...but she falls for one guy or think she has and can't let go of him...even when the worst happens. One bad thing happens after another. Madeline Antonia Rosenberg's YA novel is full of craziness, drama, and emotions flying everywhere. It's addictive, funny, and realistically captures the whole teenage life all in a hot bubble. There's another guy that wants Anna. He's sweet and she obviously feels something for him...but she won't let herself heal...or will she?
Hot Mess is a must read. An exciting yet intriguing new read that will instantly lure readers into the story. The plot is well told and the characters will grab your attention from page one. I hope Madeline Antonia Rosenberg creates more novels about these characters and what happens next to them...The ending will keep readers wondering...what next. Overall, I loved reading this romantic yet messy read, and I highly recommend it to readers everywhere.
With a title like " Hot Mess " it instantly grabbed my attention. With that title you can pretty much guess there will be some humor! There definitely is. Anna is the epitome of the term " Girl" She is what we all are but hate to admit. Looking for attention in the wrong places, overly dramatic, anxiety filled life.
As real a story as you will find. You won't want to put it down. The characters jump off the page and bring up the memories of those in your life just like them. I know I had several moments where I would lay it down and think to myself " I totally know someone like her." or " I wish he had handled that the way this guy did."
With genuine humor and then terrible tragedy you cant help but love the way Madeline Rosenberg draws you into the story. The realness was a relief from my normal reads and I can't wait to read some more from this author.
Hot Mess is a fresh and contemporary book. This is the story of Anna McCormick, a misfit of sorts dealing with boys, fashion and mean girls. The story starts off in high school and leads into early adulthood.
Just as Anna thinks she can be happy with Trevor Sullivan, some tragic and shocking events happen. Benji Shaw, Trevor's friend and Anna's secret crush tries to help her deal with it, despite Anna's nemesis, Tanya Rosen trying to ruin things and make it worse for Anna.
Without giving away too much, in the end, Anna realizes that she needs to stay focused on what will not only make her happy but what will make her a better person.
I wasn’t really invested in this story because it was written in third person and I can’t find myself getting into it. Once I stuck it through, it was too juicy to put down. Some parts I was a little confused about, the past, present and the months earlier sections but if they weren’t in there, the story wouldn’t flow. All in all, it was an enjoyable read and I am really looking forward to the second book.
If you are looking for a great book, a great love story, and a great everything; this is the book. Hot Mess is the debut novel of the new author Madeline A. Rosenberg and she don’t disappoint at all. The story was refreshing! I can’t wait for more she can bring us, so keep going Girl!!! *ARC provided in exchange for an honest review*
I just could not put the book down and finished it in one day!! This was my escape to my younger days and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. I love the flow and the different variations of the characters.
What can I say about Hot Mess without giving any spoilers? The full title is Hot Mess: Tragic Love Series (Book 1) so that should tell you something. There is a lot going on in this synopsis- it mentions many characters. They are mostly in their early twenties and a few in their late teens. It reads YA to me with no descriptive sexual content and some profanity. The book is not written in first person point of view, but instead goes back and forth between several main characters. This can be a little confusing at times, but I liked how I got to see what each character was going through. Anna is one of the main characters and I think the book focuses on her the most. For me, I didn't care for Anna very much. She is self-absorbed, very selfish, needy, and immature for a twenty-year-old. BUT all the guys in the book are into her- and to me, she takes advantage of this. I do see potential with her character and have a feeling she will begin to mature and grow as a person as the series continues. I think this for all the characters. They have all went through a really tough time and now have to figure out how to deal with it. I was surprised at how this story went- it wasn't what I expected at all. I think each character was developed enough that I want to know what happens in the next book. I believe Benji is one of my favorites simply because he seems like there's more to him. If you enjoy a lot of drama in books, this is definitely the book for you! It had a lot of that!

As a mother this book hit me pretty hard. This is the story of Anna and Trevor. They are both young and deal with the pressure of growing up in their own way. Trevor and Anna aren't the only characters in the book. You will meet several others. Each one deals with drama. Boys, drugs, drinking, sex. This book has it all. Anna has issues. One of the issues is she doesn't know really what she wants. When she thinks one door closes, she is off to the next guy. But she finds herself back to Trevor everytime..She is young and unsure of how to deal with everyday issues She is really a lost soul. My heart broke for her but she also made me so mad.
Trevor was a good guy. He has had his fair share of mistakes. But those mistakes made him human. He has one major issue. One that he runs back to when things get bad..But this one thing changed his life. Not only for himself but everyone around him too.
It has been stated that this book felt like an after school teen movie.. And that statement is so very true.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt sorry for the characters in this book. Its really sad to see the kids go through this growing up. 4 stars for an emotional read that held me from beginning to end. Every teenager needs to read this book..
Oh wow... This book really surprises me in a good way. At first I have a doubt, because I got it in audiobook and I've tried audiobook before and I think it's not my thing, so I'm afraid I won't like it. But I'm so totally wrong, I ended up loving this book.
Okay let's talk about this book. This book is all about drama that revolves around Ana the drama queen, she's so obsessed with boys, so clingy, never listen to anyone, she's a girl with a lot of insecurities, everywhere she goes there's always drama happening.
Reading this book is like watching drama TV series. Yup we got that juvenile delinquency, jealousy, sex, drug, booze, parties and plenty of drama. There's so many characters here, which means there's many plots, it's a hot mess I know, but I'm okay with it, because I kind of fond with those characters, with all their teenage problems. This book also got some sad moments, especially with Trevor's incident, that reminds me that drug is a very dangerous thing and bring only bad things for the user and people around them. The jumping between presents and pasts is a bit bothering me, but because I'm so immersed in the drama, in the end I'm really enjoying it.
If you're looking for drama, you have to try this one.
This was a teen/twenty something Netflix drama in one book.
This is a debut novel by this author and it was written in the third person POV. The book was based around four people and their dramas.
Anna is the girl that seems to constantly need a boyfriend and a drama, but she's got her own set of issues and always seems to be attached to her phone and likes attention.
Tanya is that beautiful popular girl, who also has her own issues to deal with and is jealous of Anna, just as much as Anna is jealous of Tanya. Anna and Tanya just don't like each other and seems to be in competition for Trevor.
Trevor is the goody or is he? Trevor used to be Tanya's boyfriend, but now he's with Anna. Will Trevor's friend to lovers relationship with Anna survive?
Then there is Benji,he's the player, Trevor's friend and the one who all the girls like but he can't or won't give them more.
This was a good debut novel, was unsure of what to rate it because for me the story went from a different time period that sometimes didn't really make much sense. However, the story wasn't lacking in emotions and it does have some surprising twists.
I received this book in return for my honest opinion.
This was my first book from this author. I found that there were parts of the story that were real and kept my interest. Other parts were pure immature drama by the main characters. The underlying relationship between Anna and Trevor was dysfunctional and bordered on obsession...but some relationships are like that. Not every relationship is perfect and bubblegum and rainbows. They intentionally hurt each other and tried to be the one to save the other. I applaud the author for tackling the not-so-pretty side of some relationships.
I found myself having a hard time knowing which character's point of view I was getting...but adapted over the course of the book to the constant flipping between characters in the story.
I felt the last 10% of the book was real and left so much to be covered in a future book. However, the immature drama reared its ugly head and made me want to slap the characters!
Overall, this was a good introduction to this author. I would give it 3.75 stars. I will definitely check out the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed reading this book Hot Mess by Madeline A. Rosenberg. It's the first book by the author and I will say I can't wait for what she comes up with next. This book was filled with drama, angst and even more drama and I loved it.
This book has four main characters: Anna, Benji, Trevor, and Tanya. Hot Mess resolves around these four characters who are just finding out just who they are in the world. They all have some issues that they have to overcome in this story, we all know that nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, but what is truly unique is how you overcome that obstacle.
Hot Mess was a very enjoyable read, the characters were well written and the story itself was pure gold. It's not just about people falling in and out of love it gives us the readers life lessons that the past does not define you.
All in all a great read. Highly Recommend for YA Lovers.
Everything that happens in this book will captivate you the love triangles between friends the way the story has twists and turns in it.
Trevor , anna, Tanya and Benji all have feelings for each other I am not going to give anything away but the love triangle between them all is so electrifying. Anna is with Trevor after being hurt Micheal after 2 years together anna and Trevor hurt each other in a really bad way. Tanya is a popular girl who use to date Trevor but still has feelings for him Benji Trevor's best mate and he fancies anna but he does hook up Tanya.
Will they be able to sort themselves out? And save one another.
This book will keep you hooked from beginning to the end I am giving this an amazing 5/5 I hope that there is another book to come out I can't wait to read it if there is.the author well what amazing writer.
This book just wasn't for me at all. I tried, I got about 25% of the way through it and I just couldn't go on anymore. The story was being narrated by too many characters all at once. It would change just about every paragraph. I started getting confused who was telling the story, and whose thoughts were whose. The chapters ended very abruptly without any kind of end. It felt like everything just rolled on but chapter numbers were just thrown in bwtween. It felt rushed and I couldn't connect with the characters at all.The teen speak and lingo was a little too immature for me. Mostly it was a bunch of teens whining about their life. This book was set for a very young audience. The storyline wasn't a bad idea. It needs some work and then it might not be too bad.
I went into Hot Mess with the expectation of a hilarious trip into my own disastrous dating past, relived through the eyes of our MC, Anna. This book didn't disappoint for entertainment, but the jumping back and forth in the timeline was jarring to read and hard to keep track of at times. From the first page, Anna and Trevor are well developed characters, very 90210-esque (Wow, dating myself much?) and that's part of the fun. I think perhaps if I had been younger I could have better related. I wanted to love Hot Mess, I really did. Unfortunately, I could only like it. 3.5 stars from me. Since Goodreads doesn't allow a half star, I had to go with three on this tale of young love gone chaotically awry.
Okay so this is the first book by this author, so I really had no idea what to expect. What I was thinking when I purchased this book is DEFINITELY not what I got. This book followed multiple people's POV, and with that all their problems. The issues within this story are real and believable, which I absolutely love. Being able to relate to a situation is needed for me to be able to get into the story. Each character had some kind of past (or present) that they need to overcome. The question remains... will they? Mistakes made, lessons learned, now a future to plan. Curious to see how their stories unfold.
what a fab story, I'm so glad I got the chance to read this book. this book hooks you from the first page and keeps you hooked until the last one. this author has the ability to mix together a lot of characters into one story to give you a fab read. this is a story about teenage life and all the emotions that go with it, from heartbreak to angst to romance last. this author made this story very believable. I cant wait to read more by this author in the future and I'm hoping that there's a sequel to this book.
I was gifted this amazing book for my honest opinion and I have to say it is awesome I fell in love with all the characters and the story line it will keep you on the edge of your seat and the emotions you will feel OMG all I can say is please if you haven't read this book you are missing out on one amazing book. This is the first book that I have read by Madeline A. Rosenberg but I will be reading more of her books she is an amazing author and her writing style is awesome. I gave this book five stars it really wish I could give it more. Thank you so much ma'am for giving me this amazing opportunity to read and review your book you are amazing.
Hot mess Wow this book was not what I expected it was my first read of this author, this book was all go go go, we have multi POV's from a wide range of characters with all different levels of life issues and I loved it. I really enjoyed each character flowing through their mind set and thinking will they run through that tunnel to overcome there battles. This book was a great read full of drama, fun moments and a little crazy but so worth the 4 stars a great YA book. Must read and can't wait for more to come.
With multiple points of view I was worried that I would struggle with this book but I didn't. I found myself very engaged in this book and the story it presented. I will admit I am a hot mess so I could relate to the title the first time I looked at it only my closet isn't that awesome. I laughed repeatedly while reading and finished it in only two days. It is a fun read that is great pick for any gal wanting a good laugh.
Well I will say this book is titled correctly. You will delve into the lives of young people and how some think the world revolves around them. While others just don't know what to do with their lives. This book is really what a lot of young adults go through in life from personally disorders to eating disorders and even alcohol and drug abuse. While some may also end in tragedy how will this group of friends come to terms with all this and how will they react. This is a great eye opening book.
"Hot Mess"...definitely a title that grabbed my attention. However, the further and further I got into it, the less I could relate with the characters and their stories. It was to no fault of the author at all. I'm just at a different place in my life, and I believe that this story is more suited to a much younger demographic say between the ages of 17 to 24.
Thank you for the opportunity to review, it was greatly appreciated.
