Rose Gallant was always the agreeable sister, which is why she’ll do anything to help her Cajun family find their father in the wilds of Louisiana. Joseph Gallant was separated from Rose and her two sisters thirteen years ago during le grand dérangement, the brutal exile by the British from their Nova Scotia home. So when a rich Louisiana Creole offers marriage and a chance to help, Rose believes the union will reunite her family. But it’s the passionate and handsome Coleman Thorpe that sets her heart to flame. Thorpe is both English and Protestant and therefore forbidden, but Rose will soon learn how determined a man can be in love, able to break down all boundaries and bring a family together.
"Ms. Claire's tale of the Acadians (Cajuns) is rich in Old World traditions as she explores the early beginnings of what was to become the melting pot of American society. Rose and Coleman's love is the stepping stone to a new beginning and readers' hearts will be warmed by their love and its powerful message." —Romantic Times Magazine

I grew up in SW Louisiana and married a Cajun. Their history is so rich, so full of both tragedies and triumph. From the age of 6 when we moved there following the oil, I could be found at the knee of one Maman of another learning the stories, the history, the legends and superstitions. A good thing too, because I married a Cajun and have five amazing children as a result. When the oldest was a year old (the only one born in Louisiana), we moved to Arkansas. But all of my children grew up with all the stories, the history of their people. A heritage I wanted them to have as much as their heritage from England, Ireland and Native American on my side.
I mention this brief bit of my personal history to put point to my next statement. This author has caught the Acadians, the Cajun people and their earliest days in America to perfection! I normally read most books like this with at least a bit of disappointment, regardless of the talent of the author of how captivating the story. They just do not capture the Acadians, the changes they endured, the way they both adapted and melded in their new land, yet stood proud and talk over their family, culture and faith. This author did a lot of research, listened to a lot of old stories and took them to heart, then brought them to life again in this book and these characters. To say I am impressed is an understatement. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series. Thank you for treating my children's heritage with such respect and caring to be accurate. To readers, if you have a real interest in early Cajun life in America, then let this book be a beginning for you.
I must have downloaded this when it came across BookBub for free. It is the second in the series, so unfortunately I felt a little like I was dropped into the middle of the story. While the author tried to catch up the reader, our hero and heroine had met and fallen in love prior to the start of this book. So that’s a bit unusual for a romance.
Otherwise, this book had some really well written engaging elements, and introduced me to a history that I was unfamiliar with. However, other times the writing felt a little sophomoric and the editing was inadequate.
I gave it 3* instead of 2 because I am pretty sure that I would have enjoyed it more if I had started this series from the beginning. That said, a quick search led me to discover that book 1 is currently free. I downloaded it and hope for the best.
My resolution for this year is to be kinder to my books, but when you can't you can't and with this book I just can't. I couldn't even make it through the first chapter. Let me give you a taste of the writing I was getting from this "award-winning author": Rose is riding in a pirogue. Did I mention she's in a pirogue? Because she's in a pirogue. Her sister is up front in the pirogue. Sitting behind Rose in the pirogue is the man who owns the pirogue. It begins to rain so they must stop the pirogue to get out of the pirogue. Pirogue pirogue pirogue. When this award-winning author wrote She couldn't of asked for a better brother, I was done.
Book two of the Cajun Series is a good read. This book continues the story of the Gallent family focusing on the youngest daughter Rose. Though this is about Rose, all of them win characters are still in play which makes this book such a good read. The contnuity draws you in so it is hard to put the book down. Looking forward to book 3.
An amazing story! Full of historic places, clothes, food and music. I cried twice reading this story, not something I normally do. Pleasurable read, I highly recomend it! Thank you for a wonderful time.
I choose the book base on the cover and the fact that I read Emmillie first. I like the journey of love and the effects love had on the entire community.
What an amazing story Cherie Claire has written! The realism is such that you can feel the heat and the mosquitos. It’s got romance and a cultural situation.
Enjoyed this story of families making it in the 1700s and how they could still manage to make things work out even when there were so many differences.
