The Lost Hegemon

Rate this book
Europe and the West face a social crisis as a brutal war in Syria has spread around the world. The ISIS, also known as Islamic State erupted violently onto the world stage in 2014 proclaiming its aim to create a Global Caliphate. War and terror in Syria have created a massive refugee crisis across Europe.
In autumn 2015 Russia was invited to help defeat ISIS in Syria. That Russian military action signaled a new era in global politics. Washington no longer dominated the military world. The world was ineluctably moving towards a new world war, one claiming to have religion at its core. Islam was being instrumentalized as a weapon of war, but by whom?
Few asked who was behind the IS terror or Al Qaeda. For that it would be necessary look back to the 1950's and the birth of a new American intelligence agency and their ties to the secret Muslim Brotherhood. What emerges is a picture so incredible few could imagine.

The Crusaders knew that the Pope guaranteed them a papal indulgence for all their deeds, however murderous, and those Crusades spanned almost two centuries. Any sin was removed by a Papal get-out-of jail-free card. That First Crusade alone murders 300,000 Christians. In what becomes Yugoslavia, the Crusaders slaughtered 4,000 townspeople for the crime of defending their own homes. Today’s American Christian right politics is similar to the Crusades in that its true believers demand a “foreign policy based on militant nationalism as an almost holy virtue.”

The US unfolds “Color Revolutions” in Tunisia. This involves the CIA and US State Department using CIA linked NGOs, Twitter, Facebook, and Washington-trained activists to change government leadership. NATO and the US got a lot of mileage from the faked filmed beheading of James Foley. ISIS changes its name to IS when it’s noted that the English name of Mossad is ISIS. ISIS, or IS was “a joint project by the CIA and Israeli Mossad” using “psychotic mercenaries posing as Islamic Jihadists gathered from around the world” known as Operation Hornet’s Nest. Al-Zarqawi was commissioned by CIA handlers “to found Al-Qaeda in Iraq”. It first was used against Saddam’s Baath Party, then later “as a Sunni terror force to justify a permanent US military occupation of Iraq. It failed when al-Maliki’s Shiite government orders the US to remove its troops. Washington hoped that financing political fundamentalist Islam would “secure a revitalized American global hegemony.” The Pentagon sought Full Spectrum Dominance, and what David Rockefeller called the New World Order. But Arab Spring failed to bring expected Muslim Brotherhood free markets across the Islamic world through US sponsored regime change. Yes, Arab Spring brought chaos that spread widely; but it was not a chaos the US could control. Interesting fact: Gene “Sharp’s handbook was used in every major Color Revolution up to and including the Egyptian Tahrir Square one.”

The US invasion of Afghanistan led to INCREASED opium exports – so much for the US War on Drugs and the Just Say No campaign. In 2013, Iran reported two million youth addicted to Afghani heroin. It’s a win-win for the US; helping the manufacture of dangerous drugs, assures the US gets the funds to pretend to fight them, yet helps foist addictive drugs on countries we don’t like. Deliberately creating your own enemy; what a twisted concept. Originally the US War on Terror focused on controlling Middle East oil, but now its job is to contain the threat of Russia and China to continue US total dominance. The US Military Ministry (run by right-wing fundamentalists) has an annual budget of $500 million; we are financing there a modern-day religious crusade under the radar of the American people. As Wesley Clark said, the role of the US Military is to start conflicts, not prevent them. The joys of intentionally acting as a rogue state.

Debt bondage was used by Britain to help loot the Ottoman Empire. Don’t protest only military war while totally ignoring financial warfare. “The secret Sykes-Picot British-French pact to carve up the Middle East was a Great Betrayal for the Arabs.” The Arabs fought against the Ottomans in WWI and got nothing for their trouble. Russia exposed to the world how the Sykes-Picot Treaty double-crossed the Arabs. Laurence of Arabia kept that secret, wanting the Brits to win, more than what happened to the Arabs.

Balfour, who wrote the Balfour Declaration, wrote Lord Rothchild “it is clearly being understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.” Jewish historian Arthur Koestler exposed the truth about the Balfour declaration: “one nation solemnly promised to a second nation the country of a third.” Britain wins Iraq’s oilfields after the war, and before the war it had annexed both Kuwait (1899) and Egypt (1914).

Intentional Minority Rule: Wahhabism controls Saudi Arabia while only 20% of all Saudis back then were members. The French did the same with “imposing a Maronite minority rule” (even though Maronites were only 20% of “the largely Muslim land”). The Muslim Brotherhood was behind the Arab Spring movement where it always pushed aside democratic protestors to take center stage.

Britain starts manipulating extremist Islam: Back then Britain was trying to see “how they might use that force of Islamic ideology as a political force against any indigenous democratic threats to their domination.” Britain funded Ibn Saud’s “conquest of all Arabia,” where all poetry and music was prohibited and adulterous women were stoned to death. The Brits install their puppets to rule in Jordan and Iraq. For the British, “Islam was a tool to legitimize the rule, tyranny and corruption of Arab leaders. To the West, Islam was acceptable; it could be and was used.” Creating despots beholden to their British and French masters. Britain uses Egypt’s foreign debt to take over the Suez Canal. Britain hands Lebanon and Syria from the defeated Ottoman Empire to the French to pull off the Sykes-Picot. Fascism glorifies death and has contempt for compassion, saving reverence for strength. After WWII “Al Banna’s Muslim Brotherhood was wanted for war crimes and genocide against Jews. Then, instead of being put on trial, the British Secret Service, MI6 hired the Brotherhood.” “What the British did then was to offer to ‘sell’ the Muslim brotherhood leaders they had trained to the newly created CIA.” For more than seventy years, there was an alliance between the Brotherhood and Saudi Wahhabism.

US starts manipulating extremist Islam: The CIA used Billy Graham’s anti-communist tirades against the Soviet Union, then found seasoned Muslim warriors in Germany (von Mendes group) and put them to work in Cold War activity. This opened the door to US manipulating Islam for its own goals. British puppet Farouk is dethroned by Nasser in 1952. Non-aligned Nasser finds the Brotherhood “antithetical to his nationalist secular reform agenda” whereas Farouk had funded them to counter nationalists and communists. MI6 repeatedly tries to assassinate Nasser for the crime of his wanting to nationalize the Suez Canal, and being a clear anti-colonialist. How dare you put your country first! That’s our job. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has a long history of violence and torture and has burned eighty churches. The CIA then smuggles Brotherhood members into Saudi Arabia where they combine “the doctrines of Nazism with this weird Islamic cult, Wahhabism.” Osama Bin Laden comes exactly from this union. “By 1954, Saudi Arabia had become the center of worldwide Muslim Brotherhood activity. The Saudi monarchy had struck a grand bargain with the Brotherhood” – we’ll give you the cash but ONLY if you do your nasty stuff outside of our country (Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, and Syria). This becomes “the petri dish for training the next generation of Islamic Jihadists and Salafists.” The unsavory alliance only dies beginning in 2010 when the Saudis fear the Brotherhood would turn against them. In 1957, the CIA discusses manipulating extremist Muslims to fight communism.

Wahhabism intentionally calls many other Muslims not “true” Muslims because Muslims normally can’t kill each other, but if your opponent is called not “really” a true Muslim, then you can. The CIA files on the Dulles brothers using the Muslim Brotherhood as a weapon against the Soviets are still classified for “national security”. Until it became common knowledge that Bin Laden was trained in Afghanistan by the CIA, few Americans “had the slightest idea of the sinister alliance” between US secret intelligence and Islamic radicals. Bin Laden was recruited for CIA Operation Cyclone when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Years ago, Rudyard Kipling called the fight for control of Afghanistan the Great Game. Yet surprisingly Milton Bradley and Hasbro never turned it into one of their titles.

Brzezinski gets empowered by being funded by David Rockefeller, who in 1973 creates the Trilateral Commission (Tri = US + EU + Japan). Brzezinski becomes its first director. The Shah of Iran is a Rockefeller crony. Brzezinski helps Jimmy Carter get elected and tutors him. In return Carter makes Brzezinski his National Security (foreign policy) Advisor. Brzezinski hates the Soviet Union because, like Anne Applebaum, he is Polish and lives to manipulate power globally (Dallas and Falcon Crest style) to continue US supremacy. And so, Brzezinski and the CIA “discreetly” direct the Afghan Mujahideen War against the Soviet Union.

“The Afghan Mujahideen received in total about half a billion dollars a year from the CIA and roughly the same from the Saudis, funneled (through BCCI bank) through Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)”. BCCI’s client list included the CIA, Saddam Hussein, Manuel Noriega, the Medellin Cocaine Cartel, and Osama Bin Laden. One of BCCI’s subsidiaries financed Harken Energy for George Bush Sr. “After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, the key figures in Maktab- al-Khidamat, including Osama Bin Laden, went on to form what became known as Al Qaeda.” From the 60’s to the 70’s the CIA was fine with the Brotherhood doing what it wanted as long as their target was communism and nationalism. This led to scores of religious schools (madrassas) in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Before the Soviet Union even invaded Afghanistan, President Carter authorized secret aid to Afghan warlords to fight the Afghan regime. “Brzezinski said years later he had convinced Carter that in his ‘opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention’.” It did.

The US paid $20 billion to Pakistan’s leader Zia who was a Sharia fanatic, in order to train over 100,000 insurgents (“freedom fighters”) between 1978 and 1992. A known charmer, Zia put “more than 15,000 female rape victims in jail because they would not comply with the Islamic condition requiring them to have numerous male witnesses of their victimization.” For merely disrespecting the Quran, Zia put you in prison for life. US elites were split on whether to support Iran or Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War, so the US supported both sides (just like in the US War on Drugs and the US War on Terror). Part of this was Operation Staunch, and Bush Senior clearly straddled both camps.

Engdahl Bombshell: “The Bush family was deeply entangled in both Columbian cocaine and Afghan opium and heroin operations.” Bush Senior “used his post to facilitate the inflow of Columbian cocaine via Florida, where his old CIA Cuban buddies controlled organized crime.” Alfred McCoy writes that the Sicilian Mafia exported heroin from Pakistan to the US, where it was distributed by Mafia controlled pizza parlors. The CIA funded textbooks made through a $50 million grant to USAID; one of those textbooks called on Afghan children to “pluck out the eyes of the Soviet enemy and cut off his legs.” Bin Laden creates Al Qaeda with US knowledge. Soviet defeat in Afghanistan was declared a victory for the Global Caliphate. Hate Soviets who you accuse of your own goal of trying to “rule the world”? Easy, help Muslim extremists in THEIR quest to rule the world. What could go wrong? After that Afghan victory, “the CIA helped bring key cadre of the Mujahideen into Chechnya, Bosnia,” and Central Asia.

US alone destroys Yugoslavia: The US wanted a pipeline through the Balkans to control Caspian Sea oil. The American Petroleum Institute estimated that the Caspian Basin had 659 billion barrels. But how would the US (as a declining power) control that pipeline? In addition to controlling oil, one analyst wrote that the US destroyed Yugoslavia in 1989, because Europe was becoming too independent of the US, and wanted US bases in Europe gone. Killing off Yugoslavia created the massive US Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, and expanded NATO (controlled by the US). Bondsteel alone helped the US control both the Middle East and the Caucasus. Under Clinton, US private mercenaries trained the Kosovo Liberation Army. The Washington Times published evidence that Clinton officials knew well that this KLA was also one of the most powerful heroin traffickers in the world.

A US law stated that any part of Yugoslavia that didn’t declare independence “would lose all US financial support. “Until that US law, there had been no civil war in Yugoslavia.” An advisor to Thatcher said, “The war in Bosnia was America’s war in every sense of the word. The US administration helped start it, kept it going, and prevented its early end.” The IMF, NED and Soros then destroyed Yugoslavia through shock therapy, giving it $21 billion in foreign debt. US multinationals then plundered its economy. By 1991, inflation there was over 140%. “Washington’s financial support was typically channeled into extreme nationalist or former fascist organizations that would guarantee a violent and bloody dismemberment of Yugoslavia.”

The Serbs were singled out because they were the strongest voices against dismemberment of Yugoslavia. Western media started calling Serbs the “new Nazis of Europe”; such intentional malignment led to the deaths of over 200,000 people. The CIA pays to bring Muslim extremists into this fight. PR company Ruder Finn’s job was lying about the Bosnian war (including lobbying congress) so that no one knew the real story. Ruder Finn amazingly got US Jewish organizations to ignore that Croatians and Bosnians openly worked in WWII with the Waffen SS to kill Jews, and instead turn on the Serbs, which clearly didn’t. “Tens of thousands of Jews perished in Croatian camps. So, there was every reason for intellectuals and Jewish organizations to be hostile towards the Croats and Bosnians.” Now that’s PR, repackaging lies as truth for the right price. Once Jews entered the game, it became easy to “equate the Serbs with the Nazis in the public mind.” “The way was clear to blame Serb forces for every imaginable crime.”

To help Clinton be able to say few of the fighters were foreigners, “the foreign Muslim Jihadist fighters were given Bosnian citizenship.” Bosnian Jihad received $2.5 billion in funding from “Saudi and other Islamic states.” “Egyptian intelligence at the time identified Osama Bin Laden as a key player in Bosnian Jihad”; Osama Bin Laden even trained leading KLA fighters. The KLA was then trafficking 20% of the world’s heroin and 40% of Europe’s heroin. The longer the war lasted, the more strength NATO got. This was helped by “fabricated accounts of tens of thousands of rapes of Muslim women”. The New York Times falsely claimed there were Serbian-run ‘rape camps’.” “With Kosovo in flames, NATO could intervene.” And it did. Former Ambassador James Bissett wrote that “Almost all of the non-Albanian population was ethnically cleansed from Kosovo under the watchful eye of 40,000 NATO troops.” The US wanted to provoke Milosevic’s army to “justify a new NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.”

In “1999, NATO strikes (in Bosnia) were done in violation of the UN Charter. Clinton authorizes “Operation Anvil with no regard to the UN, nothing about that anvil was noble.” “Clinton brazenly lied to the American people, claiming the events of the Serbs in Kosovo were comparable to the Holocaust.” “Clinton’s State Department claimed Serbian troops had committed genocide.” Punch Line: “Only 2,108 bodies were ever found.” Some genocide. Let’s put that “genocide” figure up against the 2-4 million Vietnamese killed only because of US aggression. Reverse progress: the area of Yugoslavia went from being the “most pro-Western society in the Muslim world, to being a “Jihadistan”. Did the US love Kosovo? “After the war, Kosovo unemployment was running at a depression level 45%.” Note: After $40 billion dollars of US funds, Kosovo declares independence from Serbia w/o legal basis or public discussion. Achievement Unlocked: the war created the Global Islamic Jihad Movement backed by the CIA and Pentagon through proxies.

Chechnya: The US could now get back to creating that oil pipeline it wanted to control and that meant next getting into largely Muslim Chechnya (which had predominately a mild Sufi sect) with its Jihadis. Dick Cheney and Halliburton saw the Caspian Basin as a new Saudi Arabia with $5 trillion at stake in oil; they didn’t want all that future cash going to its present owners – so what to do? Stage a coup in Azerbaijan against its elected president and create the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (through Georgia and Turkey to the Mediterranean). This was Cheney’s territory; angry balding amoral white men coveting what clearly doesn’t belong to them. And so, Osama Bin Laden then in 1995 moved his focus to Chechnya “from his US-approved safe haven in Khartoum in Muslim-Brotherhood-controlled Sudan.” In Chechnya back then Islam was personal, not political or evangelical. Baku was the shipping point for Afghan heroin where it was run by the Chechen Mujahideen mafia. The problem for the US was Azeri oil was largely flowing through Chechen pipelines to Russia. “At the same time the CIA and Pentagon were pointing Jihadists into Russia’s Chechnya, they set up a propaganda arm in Washington (ACPC) to make the case for Chechen independence from the ‘brutal’ Russian occupation. This US instigated war killed 50,000 civilians”, displaces half a million people and floods Europe with heroin. Nancy Reagan would be so proud. Your taxpayer’s money at work – pause to salute nearest flag or Lee Greenwood (or Toby Keith) poster. Two of the Chechen extremist Muslim leaders were paid millions of $ to make it happen. This violent chapter ends the Chechnya problem, the Russian Baku oil pipeline was now kaput, and BP and ExxonMobil could plan to run their $ profit-making pipeline through Georgia. And that meant a Georgian government “absolutely beholden to Washington.”

Georgia on My Mind: In 2003, to get that long damned pipeline done, the US gave Georgia a lovely color revolution – the Rose Revolution. “US NGO’s – such as the CIA linked Freedom House, the US Congress-funded National Endowment for Democracy, and the George Soros Open Society Foundations – financed or trained key opposition leaders and students modeled on the CIA’s successful Otpor regime change in Serbia against Milosevic in 2000”. It went so well that right after it, the US did an Orange Revolution in Ukraine. US orchestrated military coups of old are so passe! CIA-led planned street protests with planted extremists, and expensive viral propaganda, are the new black, Darling!

If you want to know the history of weaponized Islam as a force directed and funded by western intelligence services, this is the book for you. It starts with the break up of the Ottoman Empire by the British and French and traverses that history all the way to the modern day. Brilliantly researched and well written, it is a must read.

A little on the paranoid side but eye opener nonetheless.

Very interesting read, I felt I was given a digested and curated version of all conspiracy theories out there but in a thought provoking and none condescending way. Worth the read.
My main complaint is that the proof reading and editing are not up to par with "mainstream publications"; many repeated words, inconsistent structure, etc etc.

Engdahl is at his best. After wading through the vast geopolitical enigmas of the world, with sometimes over 60 references per chapter, he provides the factual baselines which enable a better understanding of “how the world works”.
Focusing largely on the use of the Muslim Brotherhood by the globalist Anglo-American power brokers, Engdahl begins with a historical recount of the greater Middle East, and continues to make plain that the widely known goals of those such as Sykes-Picot continue to this day via other means.

Good Review

Not as good as His first two books, A Century of War and Gods of Money, but still, there were plenty of interesting historical stories . While some chapters were very interesting, others seemed rushed and copy and pasted together..all in all, I learned somethings I didn't know before

The author seems genuine from his endeavours but hardly any of the sources are academic leading to a lot of erroneous conclusions.

I wont go into details but if even two percent is true it shows great negligence on behalf of politicians and great almost insatiable hunger for more and more wealth no matter the price. There is a gap in all aspects of society and those creating the gap are not shy anymore to make statements in which they see those below as cannon fodder. Very soon I expect them to say same words as Marie Antoinette - why eat bread when you have cakes!

In order to gain wealth they are ready to spread and support very harmful ideologies that are never under anyones control.

Very disturbing book thar shows what short-sighted get-me-profit-and-wealth-now approach is making of the world.

A Must Read

Very well researched and written. The Lost Hegemon is a history of the Middle East that answers many questions about the present most don't think or dare consider to ask. Riveting read, as much as I wanted to, I couldn't put this book down until I finished it.

Just ok

I made a bad choice
I was looking for more of a history. This was more of a rather biased but detailed list of specific problem points.
