Sir Hrardorr was once the mightiest of fighters. Now he’s blind and useless. His knight is dead and he can’t even go into proper mourning because he needs help just to get around. Part sea dragon, he decides to go to the Southern Lair to rusticate by the coast. He can fly out over the open water and dive into the sea, where he still has at least some ability to hunt on his own. He doesn’t expect to meet a human woman out on the water, fishing in her small sailboat, but he does, and unexpectedly, they become friends.
A young man who gave up the sword to help the Lair’s healer…
Seth grew up in the Lair and has long had a crush on the most beautiful girl in the town, Livia. But she is the famous sea captain’s daughter, and far, far above him. It’d be one thing if he was a knight or at least a candidate to be one, but Seth gave up all dreams of knighthood when he chose to apprentice himself to the Lair’s elderly healer—the closest thing to a grandmother he’d ever had. His gentle heart has changed the course of his entire life and he’s not sure it’s for the better, but he sees no other option.
A newly made knight who doesn’t know how to be one…
Sir Gowan is a warrior. He was a teacher of fighting when he caught the dragoness’s eye and she chose him as her new knight. Genlitha is a stubborn female and though Gowan tried to refuse, he found he could not turn down the magnificent dragoness, even though he knows nothing about being a knight. They have come to the Southern Lair so Genlitha can teach young fliers how to best navigate the tricky winds off the ocean, and to gain time for Gowan to learn how to be her proper partner.
Three humans. Two dragons. Attraction that cannot be denied…
Both Seth and Gowan are drawn to the lovely Livia, and Genlitha finds the attraction she had for Hrardorr when they were still both dragonets has only grown stronger over the years, but there are obstacles. Hrardorr has sworn to never choose another knight. Seth has sworn to be a healer, even though it’s not his true calling. Gowan is just trying to figure out how to survive in this new world of knights and dragons.
And then they are attacked from the sea by a mighty fleet with dragon-killing weapons, and the town and Lair find themselves totally unprepared to fight. It will be up to the five of them to save the town…if they can. It seems impossible, but they have to at least try.
Bianca D'Arc is the USA Today bestselling author of over 100 romance titles. She has been published traditionally, by a few notable small presses, and indie. Before becoming a full-time writer, she ran a laboratory, a legal department, and jetted around the country on business while working for a Fortune 500 engineering firm.
OMG this was mostly plot, action and a smidgen of pining plus the to be expected smut. I do like the introduction of the sea dragons - which I assume have wings- even though they are deep sea divers with gills? (Not sure how that's supposed to work with amphibious breathing but *hand waving / magic / dragons* so I'll just suspend that disbelief. ) Cautiously optimistic for book 2. Although the snippet of her Father's reaction is confusing- I assumed she's late 20s mid thirties? Grounded? Really? Chickie, you have your own $ just move out already.
**Re-read after her Daddy's book. NO I still don't like him, yes his companions make up for it … she still hasn't given a detailed description of how the sea dragons differ from the standard aside from webbed toes & more muscled shoulders. Oo
I guess I should have checked this out better but I've read almost this entire series over the years and never had a cliff hanger so wasn't expecting one. Sigh. A definite disappointment.
Bianca D'arc's Sea Dragon is the perfect blend of courtly sensibilities, fantastic dragons, edge-of-your-seat action, and scintillating sensuality.
The story opens on Sir Hrardorr. A once heralded dragon warrior who, after being grievously injured in battle and suffering the death of his knight, has come to recuperate in the Lair at Dragoncove.
Because Ms. D'Arc opens her story with her dragon as the lead character, rather than a human counterpart. Readers are put on notice from the beginning, that dragons will not be relegated to the secondary role of sidekick, transport, or prop in this adventure. It is in fact, Sir Hrardorr and his forays into the sea, that act as the catalysts for all human interactions taking place within the read.
Dragons are so central to this plot, that they are the cornerstones on which the foundation of this book's world rests. This changing of the guard in adult fantasy, allows a great deal more of said fantastical element to permeate the story in much the same way it does in stories intended for younger audiences.
To their credit. The human element in this yarn do their dragon brothen proud. They, both collectively, as with the townspeople, and singularly, as exemplified by leads Gowen, Livia, Seth provide a drama, carnality, and emotional touchstone for both dragons and readers as the story progresses.
If you are a fan of swordplay and water battles...this is the book for you. The action found in this book's battle scenes, is enough to get one's heart rate up and keep it there. Adding to the splendor of this battlefield bounty, are the surprising ways in which the gifts of Hrardorr, Livia, and Seth are called into play. Allowing each character time to shine, without making his or her spotlight glaringly obvious.
Where this story differs most from others of its ilk however, has to be in the structure of its romance. Because the humans who are destined to live with, partner with, and care for the dragons can only mate within a triad. Livia, Seth, and Gowen's bond, and the love scenes that result, are nothing less than spectacular. Not only do they showcase the ménage scenario beautifully; there is also the added treat of sub/dom play between Gowen and Livia. Not to be left out. Sir Hrardorr even manages to find love in the person of dragoness Genlitha.
The one downside to this amazing story, is that it ends. This tale of knights, dragons, battles of both body and mind, and mastery of destiny is one that you never want to relinquish. Not to worry though. There is hope. The story is set to resume right where Sea Dragon ends, in its follow-up novel, Dragon Fire.
Reviewer's Note: I received a review copy of the above referenced literary work in exchange for the honest review provided. Resulting opinions have in no way been influenced by the work's author, or Inkslinger PR.
This is the kind of menage romance I was hoping to enjoy, yet I was very disappointed.
First the story ends with a cliffhanger. The cover says: The sea captain's daughter .... no mention of Trilogy, no mention of Part 1. It was totally a WTH moment and a nono for me. (VERY unhappy reader here)
If I liked the fluidity of the writing and got into the plot easily, many inconsistencies pulled me back to enjoy this story. The main one is that during her father's absence, she is in charge of all his business, even has her own. She is respected and she handles many employees... good for her!
Then why the freaking heck the author decided that his father who was absent for far away sailings, that she could not fall in love or even BE with a man or men??? The cliffhanger is his father returning and punish her in her bedroom like a little kid...
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???
One of the man is a to-go to the healer, quite unsure of himself... at the end of the story he became pretty much the leader of the city.
The dragons cannot 'marry' unless their knights do in threesomes... They have many knights in their quite forever lifetime... so it means basically that each dragons are pretty much virgins for hundred of years....
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???
The heroine keeps repeating that she needs to pay her maid because she is no longer a virgin and she had a couple of flings. I mean one time is okay but when the heroine keeps saying the same thing over and over again...
So nope. I know Bianca D'Arc is writing romantic romances. I read her a couple of times. It is just sad that she is writing for young women and forget her middle aged readers.
This was a good book right until the end when it ended suddenly on a cliff-hanger (which I didn't know or expect) and that shock knocked 2 stars from the final rating.
I loved the first 11 books that came before this one but honestly am loving this one even more. The characters are more fleshed out and the relationship is growing in a different way that is making it more. Plus getting the viewpoints from the dragons more has been refreshing and great. Plus I love the nautical feel. Definitely want more of our blind Hrardorr.
I did enjoy this story, however what I didn't like was the abrupt ending in the middle of a scene that forces you to get book #2. I don't read reviews before I read a book myself (don't want to see spoilers or know what to expect), so I didn't know it was a trilogy OR that is ends in the middle of a scene. If this was a contemporary romance book, I wouldn't pick up books 2 or 3. But since it's a paranormal and I can handle books not having a HEA being paranormal, I'll read the trilogy.
I'm enjoying the storyline and how the author does not lose focus despite so many characters that are needed to impact the growing threat. This book did end before there was resolve for Gowan and his dragon though it is quite clear what needs to happen with Livia. I'm certain it will be a task to get Seth and Hrardorr past their stubbornness. On to part 2.
Livia knows what she wants and doesn't make any bones about it. Finding herself with two men worries her at first but soon things settle in. An attack brings all the elements together in an unusual way. I loved Hrardoee. He is just amazing.
I have read a lot of books in my lifetime and I have to admit that I have not truly enjoyed a dragon book like Sea Dragon by Bianca D' Arc since the "Pern" books by Anne McCaffrey! Not that I have not enjoyed the other dragon books that I have read because I have but Sea Dragon is written in a similar style close to the above mentioned books which I found most enjoyable and very intriguing.
Bianca D' Arc's characters are fully fleshed out and complex. I truly was able to connect to them and their situation. I was drawn in from the very beginning and my heart was won over by Sir Hrardorr the part sea dragon that was blinded and yet was still able to help in his own dragon way. Seth, the young man meant to be a knight and yet gave his dream up to help the healer of the Southern lair and Sir Gowan a newly minted knight and his dragon Genlitha, these four make for a truly magnificent story. I will say Sea Dragon is truly a st of this storyory well worth reading if you love dragons and the way they enrich their humans lives as well as their own!
Livia is in love with Seth and Sir Gowan however since Seth is not a knight it is possible that the relationship may not be allowed. In this story the dragons are mated as a pair and it is normal for two males and a female to form a loving bond and "marriage" raising their children and dragonettes together.
When the town is threatened by pirates these four work together with the townspeople and the lair to defend the town.
I will warn you that there is some very sexual situations that just add character to this story. Two hot luscious males and one uninhibited woman makes for some exciting sexual energy, guaranteed to get your mind going and raise your temperature!
I highly recommend this book and plan on acquiring the second book in the series.
Reminiscent of Fire Drake, Seth is the youngest child of a triad of 2 dragon knights and their mate, as well as their dragon partners, who chose to help out an older family member by acting as her apprentice when she has difficulties as their lair's healer. He had trained as a knight and misses parts of that training, especially having to give up the possibility of being chosed as a knight by a dragon - which also limits his expectations of being able to offer for Livia, the daughter of one of the richest men in town. When Sir Hrardorr comes to town, it is almost like a hermit going into seclusion. He was wounded and blinded by skith venom and his young knight was killed as they fought to defend a town until other dragons could arrive. He lets Seth tend him, but his first friend in town is Livia, who he meets out on the ocean when she is fishing from her sail boat. Add to that Sir Gowan and his Lady Genlitha, who has fond memories of the friendship she'd felt when she was a young dragon from Sir Hrardoor, then stir in an invasion by pirates and a father's unexpected return home and you get a very entertaining book! Struggles are both internal and external and there is still much to be decided, but this gives a solid beginning to the relationship starting to gel. All involved are a bit different, although I won't list spoilers, and they don't suffer fools gladly. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in this trilogy.
This was actually a really touching love story that made me truly feel for the characters! The storyline was completely original and the author did a spectacular job building the unique world with it's intricate double culture. I was completely intrigued and devoured this book as quick as I could. The characters were all incredibly complex with emotions that were so palpable I felt my heart squeeze and flutter a few times! Even the dragons seemed realistic and believable, making me fall in love with them. The descriptions were beautiful and the dialogue was full and complex all throughout. The romance was flaming hot and absolutely enchanting, seeming more beautiful and caring than some vapid porn others write nowadays. There was plenty of action and intrigue in this book too! With dragons, battle, love, sex, angst and self-discovery, this book has a little something for everybody! I absolutely enjoyed this book and can't wait to delve into the sequel when it releases! Beautiful!
I like the concept of the story. A group of "mis-fits" who make their circumstances work for them and don't judge based on "expected norms".
I have really enjoyed this series ... but ... cliffhanger ... now after so many books -- really? This is the first book in the series where the author was unable to finish the story and chose to leave readers hanging without warning readers in advance that the story was incomplete. (Other authors who write true trilogies finish the core story in each book ... perhaps this really isn't a trilogy but a really long book the author has chosen to break into 3 segments) My 2 stars if for the incomplete/cliff hanger. I'll wait until all the books in this "trilogy" are published so I can read a complete story.
I’ve read this book several times now, this Sea Captain’s Daughter trilogy is possibly my favourite 3 books from the Dragon Knights series.
Sir Hrardorr arrived at the Southern Lair, having lost his knight. Blinded and recovering from other injuries after being injured in a battle with the Skiths on the northern border. He is being attended to by Seth, the healers apprentice who should have been a knight.
Lady Genlitha arrives at the lair with her knight partner Gowan to fill in for another injured knight pair.
Hrardorr befriends Livy, the sea captains daughter whilst spending time in the water.
When a fleet of pirate ships attacks the cove the 5 work together to save the town.
Me agradaron.
This book is a little different. We have a noble son who was knight chosen and a lair bred son who isn't a fighter but chooses healing. Both find themselves enamored with the strong willed and independent daughter of the richest sea captain in Dragonscove, the town at the base of the Southern Lair. The one issue holding back a true mating is the male dragon, Hrardorr, who was blinded by Skith venom and is fit of battle as a knight's partner. The story revolves around each human and dragon character accepting that their lives are changing, for the good, and things just might work after all.
This book has it all sea dragons, land dragons, and air dragons, knights, enemies , friends, lovers, fighting, pirates and heros! Livia and her friendship with a blind dragon Lord Hrardorr tells all who read this story that even when you think the door has close and you are finished another one opens and you go on. When a armada of pirates come calling even the blind dragon can help especially when he is part sea dragon and part land dragon. A must read for all everyone!
I was really enjoying this one, and would have given it 5 stars if the end had lived up to the beginning. Unfortunately, the book finishes rather abruptly in the middle of the story, with no resolution for any of the characters. I know this is a continuing series, but each book needs to be able to stand on its own. I don't mind teasers for the next entry, but NONE of the major plot threads were resolved at the end of the book. Not one! It's a pranormal romance - you'd think at least the romance would resolve! This one was a disappointment.
It continues in the universe of the last books, but it is a story in itself. I loved the turn of events, the fact that even if it it completely part of the series, the author was successfull in creating something new with was already in place.
I don't mean that I was getting bored with what was happening in the north, but being honest, it was getting too elaborate and far-fetched.
Here, is a story worth its time and weight n gold, my friends.
A wonderful addition to her Dragon series. While this one is a little different (the first of a trilogy) it is no less engaging. The story resolves nicely in this book but there is so much more to the characters and their stories. Hrardorr, Livia, Seth, Gowan and Genlitha are wonderful characters full of flaws and courage. I loved them all and I really liked that Hrardorr's problem wasn't a quick fix to resolve the book. Can't wait for the next book in the trilogy.
My first thought on finishing this book was "When can I get the next one?" My second thought was "wow"! This book had everything I look for in a great book: interesting multi-dimensional characters, a well planned world, a strong female lead, two intelligent, hunky male leads, an interesting storyline, and dragons. What more could you want?
Fantastic read as always. Dragon Knights was the first series I read by Bianca and I'm always excited when she releases new material for this world. This story and the great characters in it have the added bonus of being a trilogy, meaning that there is a lot more to learn about the Southen Lair and the knights, dragons and the sea captain's daughter. This love story is more complex than any of the other HEA's in the series and I for one cannot wait to read me.
I loved this book. Loved how Sir Hrardorr, Lady Genlitha, Gowan,Seth and Livia met and all became friends and came together to protect themselves and their home. All went through some up and downs and came out believing in themselves and their own strengths. I can not wait for the next book. Erin
