Frederik George Pohl, Jr. was an American science fiction writer, editor and fan, with a career spanning over seventy years. From about 1959 until 1969, Pohl edited Galaxy magazine and its sister magazine IF winning the Hugo for IF three years in a row. His writing also won him three Hugos and multiple Nebula Awards. He became a Nebula Grand Master in 1993.
A nicely mixed bag of '50s-'60s SF with a wide range of styles and themes. It's scary to find that I still recall "Preferred Risk" (written with Lester del Rey) from when it first appeared as a 3-part serial in Galaxy in 1955. This forward-projection of global corporate corruption would find a welcoming home today. The other stories are solid, except for "Search the Sky," the only other one co-authored, this time with C.M. Kornbluth. It's a stinker, with the plot, tone and underlying outlook flopping all over the place: Apparently Pohl and Kornbluth shouldn't have tried collaborating.
