Ralph Forney is born in Texas, in a time of strife, and is drawn into the War of Aggression. After returning from war, the youngster leaves home with virtually no money, but with enough grit and determination to succeed in life.
With his resourcefulness and wit, Ralph soon becomes a deputy sheriff, and courts a young woman who falls in love with her, but their path together is laced with adversity and loss.
Will Ralph be able to find his way through these perilous times, to find happiness and purpose, and a place for himself in the world?
I enjoyed this book that takes readers back to the old west and the life of Ralph Forney around the time our country was going through a civil war. This is a fairly quick read and I wish it was longer, but it doesn't take a lot of pages to tell an interesting story and that's what the author has done. I like Ralph, he is a man who has seen life good and bad and has his own ideas about the law. Some thing he will let pass, but others he just won't abide by and I feel a connection with him in that. This is a story of life and readers follow along as Ralph becomes a deputy and gets married and has children, who learn from him about right and wrong and how to others should be treated. I enjoyed this book and the feel of the era that the author was able to produce. You don't have to love westerns to read this book, it doesn't hurt though. But if you have to love is a good story and a bit of history and you'll be glad you picked this one up.
