Buffy is being stalked by a creature intent on killing her so that it can bring about the end of the world. So, what else is new? The only person who can save her is a Slayer who should have died a long time ago. Confused? Well, so are Buffy and the gang. If that's not weird enough, what's she to make of a backpack full of maggots? How about a herd of rats that overrun the cafeteria just as she's sitting down to eat? Just how much can Buffy take before she gets totally grossed out? Chris Boal, Tom Fassbender, and Jim Pascoe join Buffy artists Cliff Richards and Joe Pimentel to bring you two tales of revenge and retribution.
Every time a past slayer travels through time to aid Buffy and the Scoobies, expanding on the established Buffyverse is always a thrill for me!
The first story is all about this time portal-jumping demon who is after our Slayer. Then comes Adja, who from the 11th century Buffy and the gang encounter and therefore have to figure out why this demon's targeting Buffy and the other question as to Adja's purpose as there is a language barrier which Giles is trying to decipher as to why both an 11th-century slayer and this demon ended up here in present time.
The second story starts off with some pretty unusual happenings such as maggots spilling out of Buffy’s school bag EWWWWW!! I hate bugs!! and RATS are EVERYWHERE!!
SPOILERS!!!! (ok honestly should've put this warning above, but anyways! 😊
The reason? A voodoo-like demon who can control zombies, a lovesick girl who has a vendetta against Buffy for slaying her vampire lover who wants to trade Buffy's soul for immortality.
Yeah, honey, you should quit while you're ahead lol
Oh, of course, there is Spike!
What I liked is two slayers who are separated by time, culture, and language barriers are still able to bond and share a mutual understanding and acceptance with each other as very few would personally understand what Buffy experiences as a slayer, only another Slayer would relate.
I liked the scene at the end with Buffy and Spike, can't help but see some foreshadowing or a nod to future episodes from Btvs Season 4 onwards to Spuffy's evolving relationship.
It's OK. The characters mostly feel like the ones from the TV show and the stories could have been from TV too. I guess Buffy comics are just not my thing.
This was basically two stories in one, and I thought both where mediocre at best compared to what I have read in the past.
The first story revolves around this demon that jumps through portals in time and a Slayer from the 11th century that is following it. Buffy and the gang have to figure out why it seems to be targeting Buffy and why they ended up here in our time.
The second story revolves around some unusual happenings such as maggots spilling out of Buffy’s school bag and rat’s coming after her in the cafeteria, and they all seem to be linked to what I can only describe as some little leprechaun with Voodoo powers. I know, but I’m really not sure what he was supposed to be.
As I said I thought the stories were not up to par, I think the reason for my feelings are that they seemed rushed where as so much more could have been done with them. Maybe only focus on one story, instead of two so that they can be done justice instead of trying to cram two into one book.
Oh well I know there are many more really good ones out there waiting for me to read them. :0)
Two stories set amid the fourth season of the Buffy TV series. Here Buffy encounters a fellow Slayer who has travelled through time from the 11th Century and confronts a woman tapping into the macabre powers of vodoun.
It should be cool to see Buffy fight alongside a Slayer from the past but unfortunately it isn't. You see the past Slayer doesn't speak any English, leaving her and Buffy to just exchange a general sense of bitchiness with each other. Buffy herself also points out in the story that other Slayers are constantly popping out of the woodwork, despite her being the 'one and only'.
I was intrigued by the idea of introducing voodoo in the second story here and Baron Samedi is a nicely inscrutable antagonistic presence, but nothing significant is really done with the idea and it ends up feeling like a wasted opportunity.
Also, am I the only one who wants to see Xander fed into a woodchipper every time he utters a line of dialogue?
This is a high-octane adventure where a slayer from another timeline chases a demon into Buffy's world. What makes this demon different is that it is seemingly indestructible. An exciting story from start to finish with great action and deep moments.
I think this is my more enjoyed one out of the three i own. Not the biggest fan of these random trades but they predate any run of comics to do with the Buffyverse, it had to start somewhere I guess
I am not sure if I should give this a 2 or 3 star review so it's probably more of a 2.5 star rating. It's not bad and it feel like it fits in with the Season Four timeline. The idea of the two stories is great but they're weak in execution. The two stories contained in this bind up are too rushed and are missing something even though there are lots of typical BtVS elements.
