John Peck first tasted the thrill of adventure at the age of 21 on a British Army expedition to climb the volcano Mount Popocatépetl in Mexico. From the moment he stood on the summit, looking down into the crater, he was hooked. His adventures since then can only be described as eclectic. They have taken him to the top of unclimbed Himalayan peaks, the frozen Arctic ice of the North Pole, the heat of the Sahara desert and across the Atlantic Ocean.
Yet Peck is not an exceptional climber; nor runner, rower or sailor. In fact, his first experience at sea ended up in one of the most famous RNLI rescues of the 20th century. What he is, is passionate about adventure, and that secret knowledge that only comes when your resilience and resourcefulness are tested to the limit. Restless is for anyone who has ever wondered if they have what it takes to do the seemingly impossible.
We had the privilege of having the author, John Peck, come into the office to have a chat about overcoming challenges and becoming resilient. A nicer man you will struggle to find. What I found most inspiring is the fact that he took lessons from every single adventure he undertook, including ones about being too self-assured when he was younger. He freely admits to any shortcomings he had that could have contributed to a challenge not working out the way it should have.
Although maybe not "perfectly" written, one has to remember that this isn't a novel, it is a memoir, written first had - and a very worthy memoir at that.
I would highly recommend this book to anybody who feel like there is more to life than just living and who have any obstacles to face.
