Although I studied western classical music as a kid, my grasp of music theory has always been bad and this book can be dry, technical, and even contrarian in that respect. But even so as a lifelong lover of African and African-influenced music this book was essential reading, an enlightening experience, and it seems to be the only book of its kind.
