Debra Salonen has done it again with Black Hills Billionaire, delivering a book filled with warmth, a few angsty moments, smiles and laughter. Set in the small town of Sentinal Pass South Dakota, this book picks up where Black Hills Baby, the first book in the series, leaves off. You should read that one first. It too is a lovely warm book and it adds context to this one.
Black Hills Billionaire tells the story of Hollywood producer Shane Reynard and Sentinal Pass poet Jenna Murphy. They knew each other back in college and the way they parted has troubled Shane for years. His main reason for being in Sentinel Pass is to make amends for the past, though developing the TV show his friend Cooper has dreamed up certainly gives him a good excuse to be in town. The history between these two nicely balances their obvious attraction for each other and certainly kept me guessing as to how their relationship would progress.
You can't help but love Debra Salonen's characters. They're well developed, realistic and for the most part the sort of people I'd like to have as my friends. Couple that with a story which keeps you guessing even though you know all will be well in the end and you have a winning combination. I for one am sitting on the edge of my seat eagerly anticipating the next book in this series.
Black Hills Billionaire by Debra Salonen is the second book in her Black Hills Rendezvous series. Shane Reynard, Hollywood’s producer/director, agrees to set Cooper Lindstrom’s new TV sitcom in the Black Hills. What Shane doesn’t admit is that he already knows one of the residents of Sentinel Pass, the location for the sitcom.
Jenna Murphy left college during her sophomore year, after a date rape that had gone bad. She found solace in journaling her thoughts in poems. She currently takes care of her hypochondriac mother and the visitor experience, The Mystery Spot, her late father created. She is surprised to encounter Shane, who she knew from both being in a college class.
Shane was impressed with her during college, losing his heart to her. Regrettably, he lives with the guilt of knowing who raped Jenna, his twin brother. Shane offers Jenna a chance to earn some badly needed money by helping him to write the script for the sitcom. Shane’s twin brother returns to destroy Jenna, setting into motion a number of unfortunate events to harm her. Love was not enough to save their relationship as Shane fears he too has those same evil genes of his twin. However, stubbornness could win the day.
I highly recommend this book to all readers. The characters were well written and complex. The plot was riveting and kept my attention to the very end.
This was a great book. I am hooked on Sentinel Pass and all of the interesting people that live there. Jenna is a great character, strong in spite of (or maybe because of) her damaged past. Shane was damaged by the same event in college as Jenna - indirectly - but Jenna doesn't remember him right away. There were some great romantic parts, as Shane helps Jenna build some confidence in her writing skills. And the drama that unfolded later on in the book had me on the edge of my seat. This book had a great combination of romance, drama, and quirky characters that just fit together perfectly.
I've read other books, which I loved from this author so I was surprised I found it slow & had a hard time sticking with it. Around chapter 10 it picked up and flowed much better. In the end I not only enjoyed Shane & Jennas story but the subject matter.
