Who says dating a vampire is easy? Raven's nocturnal romance with her immortal love, Alexander, is definitely dicey, but even more so with Alexander's meddling half-vamp cousin in town. Claude and his sketchy gang are on the hunt for a stash of blood-filled vials that can turn them into pure vampires. With an old family feud casting a shadow on the search, they'll do anything to get their hands on the vials. Raven and Alexander must swiftly mastermind a plan to outwit them, but will the very lure of the vials create more risk for Raven than she could ever imagine? And deepen her own quandary about the possibility of becoming a vampire?
Before I took pen to paper, I was an actress. I attended a local university majoring in theatre and spent a summer in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where I learned about the “Old Bard” from amazingly talented teachers.
When I returned from London, I relocated to Chicago where I lived for five years. There, I graduated from the Second City Training Center and performed improv, Shakespeare, comedies and dramas--I even sang and danced on a cruise boat--without falling in Lake Michigan! A classmate of mine from Second City and I created and performed a two woman show for a year before I braved it alone doing stand-up comedy. It was during this time I began to write an adult novel about a rock star--I had always enjoyed writing...
Fast forward a couple of years along with a move home where I was performing “stand-up” at comedy clubs in the area. On a plane to LA to decide my fate-- “to move to LA or not to move to LA” that is the question, my big bro, Mark, coincidentally with the same last name as mine (author of PRINCES IN EXILE, DREAMS OF THE SOLO TRAPEZE and STARCROSSED) handed me a young adult book he found at the library he thought I’d like to read during the flight.
As I read the book, I thought, ‘I can do this!’
I returned from LA, and instead of moving there, I wrote my story about the rock star as a young adult novel and called it JOHNNY LIGHTNING. Mark, my writing mentor, edited JL for me. He was kind enough to send the manuscript to his publisher in Belgium--Facet--and they published it! In Dutch!
I was now on a new life path!
In 2001 HarperCollins made me an offer I couldn’t refuse! Not only was HarperCollins going to publish TEENAGE MERMAID, but it was in a language I could read and book stores I could walk into! HarperCollins also bought VAMPIRE KISSES and COMEDY GIRL.
It was a dream come true!
Since beginning my new life path, VAMPIRE KISSES, TEENAGE MERMAID, and MY MOTHER, THE CLOWN have been published by Facet in Belgium and JOHNNY LIGHTNING has been published in Germany by Ravensburger.
Then my fabulous editor at HarperCollins asked me for a sequel to VAMPIRE KISSES! HarperCollins published VAMPIRE KISSES 2--KISSING COFFINS and now the soon to be released VAMPIRE KISSES 3--VAMPIREVILLE. I am currently writing VAMPIRE KISSES 4!
When I'm not writing about the love affair between vampire obsessed, goth girl Raven and my favorite mysterious dark-eyed hottie, Alexander Sterling, I enjoy working on my other novels, shopping for Hello Kitty items, and attempting to gain control of the remote from my boyfriend.
I realized I had read volume 1 of this manga, but not volume 2. I couldn't remember why, so I checked it out from the library.
Now I remember why. I should have checked my Goodreads review first.
This vampire story is okay. It's a teenage story - high school goth chick dates a vampire. He's perfect and gorgeous. But - there's all of his creepy cousins who are out to do really bad things.
I see I likened this to Twilight. And I didn't like Twilight.
Okay, if I can remember, I will not read volume 3.
(I'll forget that, of course, and a few years from now I'll be picking up volume 3 at the library going - "Wow! Vampires!")
I had read the actual books when I was in middle school and enjoyed greatly, the humor and the creativity Ellen Schreiber had beautifully written into her imaginative works of art. When I noticed that there were graphic novels, I immidately started reading them and found that I liked them even better than the books. I loved the wonderful artwork and the story plot and encourage all Raven fans to join her on another humorous, heart pounding, romantic journey.
When I read the first volume last year I could not wait to get my hands on volume 2. Fortunately, I was not disappointed.
Full of great illustrations this manga rocks. Sometimes I find the picture to be confusing for some graphic novels/manga but this one I actually found the picture to be good. I could clearly understand and see what was going on and that is what a good manga should be all about.
The story line was a good one. I enjoyed it because not only was there vampires but there was a little bit of mystery in there too.
The ending left me wanting the third installment. But at the same time I felt as though the ending made the rest of the book seem slightly pointless. I dunno, I think it was just the way I was thinking at the time.
This manga and the first volume have the same characters as Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses novels. The storylines are just different between the two.
So if you like vampires or the Vampire Kisses series by Ellen Schreiber then you should definitely check this book out.
Okay so Vampire Kisses II got even better! (When I was younger I loved it) Vampire Kisses got even lovinger and more dangourer as you read with V. I then with V. II! This is getting better with more action! Dont have much to say, but when I was 13 years old with this book, it was a big hight to me and I fell in love with it. When I was 13, (Now in 14) everything was unpashent. Number I and II were already out but I couldnt find V. III when i went back to the store, I looked and look and looked online and i wasnt coming out till next mouth.
When the day came read on the next book in my shelf and you will know more on what I had to saw on V. III. See you there Friends!
Etwas, was Raven auf gar keinen Fall möchte!
📖 Summary: Raven's back in black and still caught in the middle of a vampire feud she never asked for — but you better believe she’s going to handle it in style. 🕷️
Claude is on a full-blown rampage, trying to lure Alexander into his sinister plans — and Raven? She’s not here for it.
This volume gives us:
🔥 Vampire showdowns in abandoned places (naturally)
💔 Tension between Raven and Alexander — trust issues are creeping in
🕯️ More backstory on Claude and his messed-up mission
🖤 Raven being the only one with actual survival instincts
And of course, a classic dramatic cliffhanger to keep you flipping pages like your life depends on it
💖 Character Reactions:
🦇 Raven — Still queen of the graveyard. She’s clever, impulsive, and totally ride-or-die. The way she goes full goth detective this volume? Chef’s kiss. 🖤
🖌️ Alexander — Brooding softly in the background but trying his best. Still sweet, still tortured, but maybe too protective sometimes.
🩸 Claude — Fully unhinged now. Manipulative, theatrical, and loving it. He’s a chaos demon with a flair for melodrama and fangs.
🎨 Art & Vibes:
The panels are super expressive, with lots of dramatic close-ups
Still heavy on shadows and eyeliner
Gothic manga style continues to serve emo realness
🔥 Smut Level: No spice — just longing stares and romantic neck proximity. You’re here for vibes, not bites. #SmutTags: #GothLoveContinues #ProtectiveVampireBoo #NeckNuzzlesAndWhispers #TeenParanormalTension #RomanceWithFangs
Much as with the first volume in this series and my review on it, this is like reading a manga spin-off that is also chocolate chip cookies with M&M's in it. The more and more I read this, the more I feel like I'm glad that I've started here with the manga, rather than the original novel series. Given the sheer amount of stereotypes about goth girls and their obsession with the dark and the macabre, and the romanticizing a vampire boyfriend (not to mention the town that Raven real original name for a goth girl there, by the way lives in is literally named Dullsville,) had I known of the original novel series to start with, I don't think I could have taken it seriously at all. It would have felt like an extreme joke or satire, and yet, I feel as though a lot of those things that may have originally bothered me as a teen (had I tried to read the books) or would make me roll my eyes as an adult actually work quite well for this manga.
If it isn't apparent already, I'm definitely enjoying this, and I look forward to eventually finishing the series by reading the third volume. (I believe there was a second series intended in manga form, but it only ever wound up getting one volume released. Not too surprising, given it was published through Tokyopop. But I wouldn't mind picking up that volume and reading it as well.) Who knows? Maybe by the end of this, I'll be willing to give the actual novels a go.
Ari
Raven and Alexander formulate a plan to foil Claude and his minions from getting their hands on full-fledged, ancient vampire blood (and therefore scary levels of immortal power). What's not to like? But probably my favorite aspect of vol 2 was Raven herself: the conflict she feels because, despite Alexander's love and care for her, she still yearns to be more fully submerged in his world (and possibly become a vampire) herself.
Yet we get the sense that Alexander doesn't want that... but the why of it remains a tantalizing mystery. Raven meanwhile also sees a new side to Alexander - a willingness to keep things from her which adds to her insecurities. To sum up, I guess, Raven's character development in book 2 both intrigued and kept me engaged.
I would like to see, though, as the series continues, more subplots explored... and maybe see a side to Claude besides his overt obnoxious and power-hungry self. Claude's 3 minions also intrigue me and I hope to get a stronger sense of their individual personalities as the series progresses.
Alexander's cousin wants the vials of blood hidden by their grandmother. Remembering a map from when they were kids Alexander and Raven hatch a plan. They decide to try to trick Claude hoping he will return to Romania and leave them alone. Unfortunately Raven has to be the bait in this scenario. When Claude gives Raven a choice to spend eternity with Alexander...should she do it? She would be able to be with Alexander eternally, to live like he lives in the darkness together but she would have to give up her friends and family. What will Raven decide? Will Claude be fooled by their trick?
The art is great as usual. Love Rem's anime style art. She adds a lot of humor to the story which makes the romance sweeter. She also makes the characters come alive with unique designs that make each of them stand out from each other. The story is cute and if you like vampires this will be catnip. Alexander is the perfect boyfriend: handsome, romantic, a vampire with a hidden past. The main character feels a little bit over the top but maybe she's typical for a teen. She's emotional, impulsive and doesn't really think through her decisions. Are her feelings for Alexander real or is she in love with the image of a vampire? I guess we'll find out in book 3!
While there's some pacing issues (including a rushed ending), the best aspects of the first volume return in spades. The character and outfit designs continue to be the standout and you can tell that a lot of love and passion was put into this book. A shame that this would be the last one illustrated by Rem, but she went out with a bang.
I started this series when I was 10 years old; and, while I loved it at the time, I never got beyond the fourth book for various reasons. Thanks to the wonders of the Public Library System, I have been able to ILL the books I was missing (including this one) to finish up! This is technically the second book in a sub-series to the original, and takes place between the X and X book. It follows Alexander and Raven as they try to protect Dullsville from Alexander's cousin who wants to find vampire blood-filled vials that the Sterling Grandmother hid before her passing. Claude (Alexander's cousin) is half-vampire, but because of that he feels like he doesn't really fit in with either world. He has collected a gang of other half-vampires and showed up to cause trouble. Alexander and Raven are planning a fake hand-over with the hopes of getting Claude out of town - the creation and follow through of this plan is the focus of the second book.
Quick and fun read. Looking forward to reading the third one of these. I don't read a lot of Manga, but found these especially fun and easy to read compared to others I've tried. Plus I really enjoyed the book series so it's nice getting to continue the character's stories.
