"I have never seen a guy so bitter." "He likes to play that 'sad guy' card." "Not really, sadness and bitterness are two different things. A sad guy still wants to be happy; a bitter guy thinks happiness is for the imbecile. The sad type puts the blame on everyone; the bitter type may rant but in his heart, he knows he is the only one to blame."
This play follows a philosophy freshman and what she sees when a few students face prosecution after a protest. A slick play revolving around activism and debates, highlighting the perennial conflict between idealism and careerism with nuance and sophistication, set in the most ideals-oriented university of Hong Kong*. The tension and intensity of its lines make it a gripping read with much food for thoughts. A treat to be enjoyed but it may be shorter than expected: this script of an 2-hr-long play can be easily finished in 50 minutes. Strangely, the epilogue scene may be too stereotypical.
