If your a seagull and there is a food court in the area then all the food you could ever want is there on the tables and in the trash. But how do you work with others to make sure everyone gets something to eat. Stop SQUAWKing and read this book - that's how!
Great read. At the end of the story, you realize you learned some valuable management lessons. It also put a name to the face of several people I have worked with that thought they were getting results and weren't.
People may join companies, but they will leave bosses. No one influences an employee’s morale and productivity more than his or her supervisor.
The seagull manager creates the need to swoop in and set his team straight, the superior manager gets everyone headed in the right direction from the very beginning by ensuring that expectations are full fledged. Whereas the rare visit from the seagull manager results in a lot of squawking, the superior manager maintains a steady flow of clear communication. And whereas the seagull manager manages his team’s performance by dumping on everybody, the superior manager ensures that positive and negative feedback are delivered in small, digestible doses.
1) Communicate your expectations to your employees 2) Listen to their issues when they talk to you 3) Chip in and help out when there are problems.
There you go. I just saved you the hassle of reading 130 pages of a poorly written, awkward parable about an inane seagull in charge of a flock at a food court. (On the unlikely chance that you are living in a bubble somewhere, and didn't already know that those were good management practices).
I usually do not enjoy parables for business, but I did like this one. It's a little silly to think about a bird seeking help from turtles, sea otters, and dogs to learn new ways to manage his flock on the food court, but it was cute nonetheless.
In this book, Dr. Bradberry discusses the three virtues of superior management: (1) Create full-fledged expectations for every member of the team, (2) Alter your communication style so that it clicks, and (3) Hands-on performance.
Full-Fledged Expectations "To manage is to achieve results by making use of what you have available to you." Only crystal-clear expectations lead to results. You have to reveal exactly what needs to be done before you can expect to see it happen. It's important for the manager to realize the difference between expectation and result. In this story, the birds getting food was the RESULT... the EXPECTATION was performing the tasks that led to obtaining food. Full-fledged expectations ensure employees' efforts are spent doing the right things the right way (this is similar to the definition of "leadership" expressed by Stephen R. Covey in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People).
Communication That Clicks "If you aren't staying in touch, you aren't doing your job." Communication clicks when it's constant and in a language everyone understands. Don't get caught up in your daily to-do list... your #1 priority is communicating with your team. You stay in touch with everyone on the team in order to monitor their progress, help them solve tough problems, and let them know you have their back.
Hands-On Performance "Hands-on performance ensures I praise work that's well done, guide errant performers back on track, give the team a healthy sense of independence and interdependence... no micromanagement or seagull management*." Pay attention to each team member's performance, and offer praise as frequently and emphatically as constructive feedback. Superior bosses balance praise with constructive criticism because they understand their sole purpose is to guide their employees to results.
The real question, Bradberry says, is not IF you are a seagull manager, but WHEN you are a seagull manager. We have to recognize when we have a tendency to be seagull managers, so we can overcome and practice superior management skills.
*seagull manager: one who flies in, makes a lot of noise, craps on everything, and then leaves

While this book is a fun parable about a seagull named Charlie who manages a flock of seagulls at a local marine park. When the flock becomes too large, and birds begin starving, Charlie must learn how to stop being a “seagull manager”, and begin learning how to change his management style or risk losing his flock. While the book is fiction, there is a lot to learn about management styles. Our society is changing, and the seagull style of management is one that simply doesn’t work anymore…causing more harm than good, it can actually lead to company closures. I can think of several managers and supervisors I’ve known over the years who could really use this book!
Squawk! did a couple of great things for me. First, it was a really fun read. It was such a page turner that I got lost in it and forgot that I was learning. BUT I WAS!
The three virtues it teaches are the most dead-on center description of what managers (anyone who manages people, from a corporate exec to a youth soccer coach) need to make their primary focus if they want to get results. All in all just a really outstanding book that I think a lot of people from all walks of life will enjoy and get something out of.
It was a great story, and had some good tips. Usually, management books are dry and boring, but this caught my attention, and kept me engaged in the story.
Items of Note: * Emotions are signals, not commands. * Growth starts when you move beyond your emotional comfort zone. * A win-win solution is the only one that truly works because it’s the only one that lasts.
I'm not big into animal fable books. I want real world solutions in an easy understandable manner. Well this book is very easy to understand. It's borderline juvenile. It takes a seagull that is living at the food court and shows how he can grow his flock and get them to dive bomb innocent humans better. This book is extremely short and it not been easy to read and fun then I would have lowered my score more. It relies on three concepts that are no brainers. It's not going to help anyone become a better manager or supervisor, but it might re-energize you some. Or even get you to look at how you communicate and what you communicate to your staff. I would think a quick talk with your own supervisor could do that but this book may help. I didn't think this was a great business book and there are a lot of better ones out there using animal fables. It's just ok. I would recommend it if you can get it under $10 or borrow it from the library.
If you are brand spanking new to the world of management and need a quick, common sense read about the basics of management this may help you tremendously. If you are someone who is well versed in management and have read serious, well-rounded literature on the subject, you will find this title to be a waste of time.
O recomand!
I always enjoy Dr. Bradberry's leadership fables. This one gets the point across perfectly, and it is a needed point. I have been around seagull managers, and don't doubt that I have been one myself at times. All of us, even those who don't manage, can benefit from this fable.
Very much like 'Who moved my cheese?' and 'Fish!'...only not as enjoyable; felt the book costs too much for 3 simple principles for managers that are pretty obvious. If only we can just walk the talk!
This is the second book I am reading from Travis and I must say he writes in an engaging way. The principles taught in the book were taught in a simple to understand yet enjoyable way.
