Marooned on an inhospitable planet, they need to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction. But how can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again, and she made a solemn pledge to destroy him? (Shortlisted for the RoNA Awards 2017)
For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed reading and writing Westerns, Science Fiction/Fantasy and Adventure stories - always with a strong romantic element.
My first novel, 'Starquest', a futuristic romance was published by The Wild Rose Press, followed by a sequel, 'Children of the Mist'. A third story in what has become 'The Destiny trilogy' 'Beloved Enemy',was published in 2016 and I'm delighted that it was shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists Association 2017 RoMNA Award and was runner up for the RONE 2017 awards and winner of the 'Best Banter' contest in the SF/Fantasy categories. My novella about the Greek Muse, Terpsichore, set in 5th Century Wales and originally published by TWRP, is also available, on Amazon, from Smashwords or my website. Look out for my new book, THE MATCHMAKER'S MARE a sweet paranormal equestrian romance published by the Wild Rose Press on 5th May 2025. (More details on my website)
A horse and dog lover, I live with a little terrier called Choccy, adopted by my late husband and I, and who rules the house. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, 'Hywela' is Welsh and is my first name. Since I've always been called by my second name, Lyn, I thought I'd combine the two and use Hywela Lyn as my pen name)`

This book was an amazingly enjoyable read! I had no idea that this was the third book of a series. This was a fantastic stand alone that can be read without having read the first two of the series. I was immediately drawn to Cat (and Shifter) and Kerry. The characters were so well written that the reader quickly developed a feeling for them. I loved the twists and turns as they existed on the planet. A fan of sci fi will just love this book.
I found myself lost a bit with the quick scene changes that were hard to understand, at first. When the big surprise hit and there was a larger presence involved, I was struck by how quickly I found myself looking for Captain Picard and Q. I am a HUGE fan of that series so this worked for me on many levels.
The action was fast paced and exciting, the growing yet begrudged feelings between Cat and Kerry was really well written. This is a page turner and hard to put down. The superb ending was just the icing on the cake and I would love to read the first two and cannot wait to read the 4th installment. Super highly recommend this book to every fan of science fiction!
My Rating: 4.5 stars * -.5 for just the hint of loss of originality in places *
I received an ARC from the author in the hopes that I'd review it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour for a fair and honest review and rated it 3.4 out of 5 Stars.
I can’t remember the first time I read a science fiction romance but I know it’s a subgenre that I’ve enjoyed reading in the past so when I got the opportunity to read and review Beloved Enemy by Hywela Lyn, the third book in her Destiny Trilogy, I jumped at the chance. Set on an “uninhabited” planet, Beloved Enemy tells the tale of two people, determined not to fall in love with each other, who find themselves being tested and judged by a “superior” race of beings determining whether they should allow mankind to expand further into space or put an end to them. Filled with action, emotional angst and just the right amount of romance, this is a book science fiction romance lovers will definitely enjoy.
Ms. Lyn does a good job introducing us to her primary characters, Cat Kincaid, a “pirate queen” and Kerry Marchand, a man with a colorful past. A red haired beauty, Cat, is intelligent, skilled with weapons and a talented space pilot. When her spaceship is attacked, she flees in a small escape “vehicle” and ends up marooned on a planet hoping to be able to find some sort of rescue. It was a little difficult to connect with Cat at first because of how the story begins – right in the middle of her becoming marooned- but once I got to know her, and her companion “Shifter”, I liked her and enjoyed watching her character develop. I liked Kerry’s character right from the start; a handsome man with unusually colored yes, he’s smart, tough and dedicated to the crew of his ship. Though he doesn’t know it, he and Cat have someone in common in their past who was very important to them both.
The secondary characters are Kerry’s crew members, the “superior race” of beings who use the planet as a staging area for their “tests” of the humans that have landed there and members of the “Union”, a governmental organization Kerry hates and Cat sort of works with. Ms. Lyn does a good job combining all of the characters and action in the story and I found myself turning the pages to find out what would happen next. Especially when it came to the chemistry between Cat and Kerry, chemistry they couldn’t ignore.
Will Cat and Kerry be able to prove that humans are worth keeping alive? Will they ever get off the planet they are stuck on? And will they realize that they are destined to be together? You’ll have to read Beloved Enemy to find out, I enjoyed it look forward to reading more of Ms. Lyn’s work.
I have to say the blurb sounds a bit dry, but not at all what Beloved Enemy was like. Twists and turns, enemies relying on each other for survival. Ultimately, they were on trial. For what? Oh, just read it and find out! No spoilers here!
I loved Cat. She was a well rounded character, intelligent and quick on her feet. She was hunting for revenge against the man who caused her sister's death. Her closest companion her faithful pet "Shifter". She crash lands on a planet when her ship is hijacked and she escapes in a pod.
Kerry is a strong minded, honorable man. Trying to stay away from the corrupt Union that was taking over planets all over the universe. His ship is tracking an SOS beacon and when they land to assist they are attacked.
Cat comes to Kerry and his party's rescue. If anyone is going to kill him it will be her.
I haven't read the first two in the series but Beloved Enemy is a stand alone. A good one!
This book was so good. It started with action and it never let up. There was great tension between the two main characters. The author did a good job of keeping the reader questioning who was on which side, and what would happen next. There was solid scifi world-building. The ending resolution was satisfying. Well done. I'd read more of this author's work.
This was my first time reading anything by Hywela Lyn and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this great story. Hywela Lyn has given us a story with twists and turns and enemies that is relying on each other for survival. They were ultimately on trail for what you will have to read the story to fine out no spoilers from me. This story tells us the tale of two people who is determined not to fall in love with each other ,they are being judged by a superior beings who are determined to see if they should allow mankind to expand further in to space or should they put an end to them. This amazing story is filled with everything from action ,emotional angst and the perfect amount of romance. These characters are just great and the primary ones are Cat Kincaid a "pirate Queen" and Kerry Marchand who's a man with one colorful past. Cat is a beautiful red hair who's intelligent and is very skilled in weapons and one talented pilot. But then there's Kerry that who is handsome ,sexy, smart tough and who is very dedicated to his crew on his ship. The secondary characters are the crew members on Kerry's crew ,and then there's the union a governmental organization who Kerry really hates and who Cat kind of works for them. The way that Hywela Lyn has combin all of the characters in this great story will keep you locked in the pages of this book from start to finish ,and will also keep you on the edge of your seat until you fine out what is going to happen next. I could go on and tell you more, but that would just spoil everything for you .So I highly recommend that you read this amazing story ,you won't you be disappointed.
I have to admit I’ve never read many romance stories set in space, but after reading this one I’m hooked! Wonderful, kick-ass heroine and brilliant hero, and the world-building was totally believable. Would definitely recommend this!
This is the first book I've read by this author. 'Beloved Enemy' is a science fiction/romance. The action begins on the first page and doesn't let up until the end of the book. It was a very enjoyable read. The characters are fully developed, and the conflict between them makes for great entertainment. Both characters are strong-willed and fight for what they believe. The story line reminded me of a Star Trek episode. That wasn't a bad thing, as I am a huge Star Trek fan. Ms. Lyn creates a believable world. Her descriptions of the planet where her characters are stranded are both vivid and filled with detail.
Whilst this is not the first book in this Romantic SciFi series it can , in my opinion , be read as a standalone .
The book is full of action with twists and turns from the start - who was on which side , what would happen next ? The story tells of two people determined not to fall in love , both have ulterior motives for their actions...... but at what cost to the future where their very actions are being monitored by 'Superior Beings' ..... will Mankind survive ?
An enjoyable book with characters that keep you invested in the outcome .
4.5 stars: (review request submitted by the author for an honest critique)
The best science fiction tv shows are the ones that have you eagerly anticipating the following week's episode or have you zooming through the commercials because wading through 2.5 minutes of ads feels like eternity... pure torture. When a show is that good, you wish for a few more minutes. When a scifi/fantasy book is equally grand, you crave a several more pages.
When I was nearing the end of Beloved Enemy, I kept hoping 20-30 pages would magically appear -- much like things in the book. No such luck though. However, despite my wish not being granted, I was thoroughly satisfied with everything I did read.
Each chapter in Beloved Enemy contained enough scifi, mystery elements/creatures that maintained my attention from the beginning to end.
Most memorable (for me):
The huge ass water and sand creature. They are the things of nightmares and deserve a spot on any otherworldly show! PS. I am rethinking ever washing off in a lake again. bio-regenerator: This device enhances the body's natural healing process. Imagine how many lives would be saved, children or an adult's pain eased in minutes instead of days, and the profound effort it would have in combat missions. Medical marvel!
After dealing with inhospitable creatures, more than one crash, physical altercations with humans, and other WTF moments, I am not surprised Cat and Kerry relationship went from allies for a common cause, to becoming friends, and then progressed to full on love. When you been to hell and back, your troublesome times either break you or make you stronger. Their bond definitely became stronger. It's what actually saved them. And that's all you'll get from me. To find out more.... read the damn book. No seriously, read it. It's a page-turner, for sure!
