Chiar daca am vazut recenzii nu foarte bune, pe mine una nu m-a dezamagit, poate si pentru ca imi place stilul autorului.
Intriga, spionaj, dragoste, mister, C. Falconer a reusit sa ma transpuna in acele vremuri si am trait intens fiecare pagina.

A good start which is not followed in the second part of the book once it reaches Istanbul. A tragic end not expected but a lot hollows in between. There have been better love affairs in the time of war

just bad and one of the most monumental wastes of time in recent memory - having the action happen partly in Romania (obviously the author did not even check Wikipedia that well as there are enough mistakes about the Romania of 1940 that a cursory look online would show them, so I shudder to think what;'s wrong about Turkey in the same years when the action moves there) - made me read this book as well as the fact that the femme fatale de rigueur was Romanian (the hero being the introverted conflicted and honorable Englishman good in action, quick with a gun and smarter than anyone, though lacking the Bondian humor which made such bearable at least long ago)

Just as Bogart's famed 40's movie, 'Casablanca,' had its scenes of lazy, smoky, edgy atmosphere, so too does this masterful piece of historical suspense fiction by Colin Falconer. Romantic rendezvous and clandestine operations take place in bars, cafes and the exotic spots of a city clouded by the shadow of war.
Nick Davis is a spy posing long-term as an English diplomat in 1940's Bucharest, as the Nazi presence escalates. He falls under the spell of Daniella Simonici, a Jewish Romanian woman, beautiful, fragile, but with hidden depths of strength and a past that may not be all it seems.
Unlike some modern suspense novels with their 2 page chapters and constant scene cuts, Falconer's writing style owes more to those authors who offer detailed description of character, mood and place. This considered pace creates a wealth of images that stay in the mind and draw you deeply into the intrigue.
It is a story of love, but also of obsession and a man questioning the value of his life; it is a thriller of war-time espionage that shows us the consequences of greed and corruption, and which will keep you turning pages until the final, haunting twist.

Просто прекрасна книга!Фалконър умее да разказва и заплита сюжети.Благодаря ,че с тази пленяваща,но и тежка история научих някои неща за "Струма" и войната на балканите през втората световна война.Сюжета се развива в Румъния (Букурещ), България(София),Турция (Истанбул).Заплетените политически интриги и една не сладникава и не толкова красива,но силна любовна история еквивалент на невъзможната любов.

Well written and captivating!
I love historical fiction and this novel doesn’t disappoint you in any way. Vivid characters you believe in and you feel like you are there in every country and city - Romania, Istanbul and the trains or boats in between.

În alte împrejurări, s-ar fi aventurat cu precauţie în ruinele Bucureştiului după lăsarea întunericului. La şase străzi distanţă de hotel, oraşul era o lume a tenebrelor şi a umbrelor înspăimântătoare, luminată doar de flăcările albastre ale plitelor alimentate cu spirt, unde refugiaţii stăteau înghesuiţi în ceea ce mai rămăsese din blocurile distruse.
Se rătăci curând. Trase o înjurătură cu voce scăzută. Dumnezeule! Chiar şi cu revolverul care îi atârna greu în buzunarul de la haină, tot îi era teamă. Oraşul era plin de căutători prin gunoaie şi de dezertori.
Coti pe o stradă şi se lovi de un alt bărbat. Se sperie şi se dădu înapoi, gata să se apere de un eventual atac. Dar bărbatul îl ignoră şi îşi văzu de drum.
Dădu şi el să meargă mai departe, dar ceva îl făcu să se întoarcă în loc şi să-l urmărească. Bărbatul ieşi din întuneric şi atunci îi zări pentru o clipă trăsăturile, conturate în lumina lunii: avea o faţă lată şi pătrată, plată şi aspră ca o lopată, iar părul era tuns scurt. Îşi dădu seama că era bărbatul pe care îl văzuse în acea după-amiază în biroul lui Demişenko, stând în spatele şefului său, cu o faţă lipsită de orice fel de expresie.
Bărbatul intră într-o clădire aflată la capătul străzii. Gata! Ăsta era blocul unde locuia ea.
Îşi scoase revolverul. Trăsese la ţintă la poligon, dar nu trăsese niciodată la mânie, pe întuneric sau într-un spaţiu strâmt. Auzi paşii rusului răsunând pe scări deasupra lui. Începu să urce treptele în fugă.
Se împiedică în beznă de nişte gunoaie şi căzu cât era de lung, lovindu-se cu fluierul piciorului de ciment. Înjură de durere.
Rusul dărâma deja uşa. Strigă la el, sperând să-i distragă atenţia, şi se năpusti orbeşte pe scări.
Uşa apartamentului zăcea pe jos, smulsă din balamale.
Pe o masă din mijlocul camerei ardea o singură lumânare. O strigă pe Daniela, dar nu primi nici un răspuns.
Nu erau prea multe locuri în care să se ascundă şi nu avea decât câteva secunde să se hotărască. Nu putea să aştepte în cadrul uşii. Ţinând revolverul cu ambele mâini, alergă în bucătărie.
Nu era nimeni acolo.
― Daniela!
„Trebuie să vină mai întâi după mine. Nu pot lăsa să i se întâmple ei ceva.”
Auzi un zgomot în spatele lui, venind dinspre dormitor. Se întoarse şi, la lumina lumânării, zări silueta rusului în cadrul uşii. Văzu pistolul îndreptat spre el şi se simţi foarte calm. Avu un sentiment brusc de seninătate. Se terminase. Ştia ce avea să se întâmple şi îşi îndreptă într-o fracţiune de secundă revolverul în direcţia cea bună, ştiind că lucrul ăsta ar putea să aibă o importanţă vitală pentru ea, dacă pentru el nu.
Împuşcătura răsună ca o bubuitură de tun în spaţiul acela strâmt. Trase şi el în acelaşi timp. Nu simţi glonţul. Nici măcar nu-şi dădu seama că era rănit. Se concentră asupra ţintei lui, de parcă ar fi fost din nou la poligon, şi mai trase de două ori înainte să cadă la pământ. Nu simţi nici o durere.

This novel deserves five stars for the evocation of place. I felt all the cities came to life and it was obvious everything had been lovingly researched.
It loses stars because of its structure. The central plot of the novel is "British spy Nick falls for the beautiful Daniela. Does she really love him or is she a spy for the other side, and can they ever be together?" As a backdrop, Nick does his job, which includes getting involved in various James Bondian exploits, but none of it really engages, and the fact that he survives them is sometimes borderline miraculous.
And therein lies the problem. The book is about the romance, and there's nothing else (unless you're reading it out of historical interest) to keep you reading. And the romance drags on, with chapter after chapter of reunions and separations. At times, it felt as though their journey was engineered to put the characters in the right place and the right time to show off some piece of historical knowledge, rather than arising from the characters' themselves.
I'll read more by this author. I can see it could've been a good novel with fewer unbelievable action scenes and tighter editing.

I wanted to give Istanbul by Colin Falconer, three stars because of the poor editing. However, we know that good books sometimes have poor editing. Sometimes final drafts are not meticulously reviewed by the editor and/or author. Sometimes we think we’ve been thorough, but cringe when we discover errors in print. Despite this, although cloak-and-dagger, the book has a good storyline concerning the protagonist, Nick Davis.
Fearing Russia, Romanians allied themselves with Hitler’s Germany in July 1940, only to be invaded by Germany.
At the peak of the Second World War, Maverick, Nick Davis, worked as an attaché assigned to the British Legation in Bucharest, Romania. In actuality, he worked undercover as a Secret Intelligence Agent (SIS).
Nick is middle-aged, bored with his fading marriage, and not in love with his wife. One evening, at a hotel bar, he came to the aid of the striking Daniela Simonici, in a struggle with her German boyfriend. He escorts her home to the Jewish Quarter. Daniela is eager to leave Bucharest. She asked Nick to purchase three visas for her brother, her imprisoned father, and herself.
Attracted to Daniela, Nick extends himself to help her. What developed is a four year relationship with Nick and Daniela, which began in Romania and extended to neutral Turkey.
In Turkey, Nick works for the British Consulate. Daniela became a double agent, bedding Nick and German Intelligence Officer, Siegfried Maier.
Nick’s dominant, quasi-nationalistic, unpopular boss, Abrams, appears insensitive to the rights and feelings of his subordinates, as well as Hitler’s victims. Abrams is willing to exploit by any means necessary. Yet Nick seems to have a margin of freedom planning his own assaults against the Germans.
I liked the author’s expressive description of scenes and the feelings of characters, such as: “He felt as if he had been eviscerated with a blunt spoon.”
During war, sometimes all allegiance and loyalty are temporary.
I was enveloped in the deceit and subtle clues of the story. The author pointedly misleads you into expecting a certain ending, only to shock you at the surprising conclusion. This is where Colin Falconer’s writing excelled. I gave him four stars.

In Turkey, Nick works for the British Consulate. Daniela became a double agent, bedding Nick and German Intelligence Officer, Siegfried Maier.
Nick’s dominant, quasi-nationalistic, unpopular boss, Abrams, appears insensitive to the rights and feelings of his subordinates, as well as Hitler’s victims. Abrams is willing to exploit by any means necessary. Yet Nick seems to have a margin of freedom planning his own assaults against the Germans.
I liked the author’s expressive description of scenes and the feelings of characters, such as: “He felt as if he had been eviscerated with a blunt spoon.”
During war, sometimes all allegiance and loyalty are temporary.
I was enveloped in the deceit and subtle clues of the story. The author pointedly misleads you into expecting a certain ending, only to shock you at the surprising conclusion. This is where Colin Falconer’s writing excelled. I gave him four stars.

Mr. Falconer is an excellent author whose mechanics of good writing are excellent. Usually. The editing in this book was deplorable.
Set in Istanbul during WWII, the Allied Powers had to keep Hitler from access to Romania's oil fields. A secret op run by the UK was to allow Russia access only to the amount oil it would need to defeat Germany. Another secret op was to have Russia and Germany destroy each other.
We know how the Allied Powers restructured the landscape at the war's end. I wonder if Roosevelt and Churchill gave any thought as to how the boomers, like me, would live in daily fear of being nuked by the USSR. I spent my childhood wondering how my ally could be my enemy.

Dull book set in a time period and area that should have been more interesting. The characters were flat. The dialogue was flat. The ending just kept going on and on. I believe there was one chapter where the weather switched from summer to winter within the space of a couple of paragraphs during a chase. Just really not believable as a novel and it lacked emotion. The plot just meandered and the love story felt very forced.

I really enjoyed the history in this book, set in Bucharest and Istanbul during WW2. The details were well-drawn and often heart wrenching. The plot and characters were more standard thriller fare, but the well-researched setting elevated this above most entries in this genre.

Interesting in parts, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as Anastasia.
