Double S Ranch #2

Home on the Range

Rate this book
Can the brother left behind and a woman without hope work together for the good of two precious children?

Nick Stafford stayed in central Washington, working his family’s large ranch after his brothers left to pursue other passions—but his toughest job is being a single dad. As a child he watched his father fail at marriage and parenting, so Nick was determined to show him up. He’d be a better husband, father, and ranch manager than Sam Stafford ever was. Despite that commitment, three years after Nick’s wife left him, he has a daughter in trouble at school and both of his girls are facing issues that force him to rethink his stubborn plans.

For Dr. Elsa Andreas, life fell apart when tragedy caused her to abandon her family therapy practice and retreat to the backwoods of Gray’s Glen. Her school principal sister believes Elsa can guide the Stafford girls and that working with kids will draw Elsa out of her protective bubble.

Summer on the Double S teems with life and adventure. Amid the bounty of God and land, will Nick and Elsa find the courage to build futures based on faith rather than fear?

After about halfway, reading this became an effort for me. I couldn't put a finger on why I stopped burning through the pages; it's a good book and written well, so it might just be mood.

I liked all the descriptions of ranch life and loved the characters—Nick, Elsa, Cheyenne, Dakota, along with recurring Angelina and Colt from book one—but really disliked all the scenes with Whitney.

Content: drunkenness (not condoned), kissing.

I enjoyed the first book in this series. This one I struggled with. I struggled to connect to the characters. I struggled to stay interested in the plot. Honestly, I didn't care one way or the other about whether or not I finished the book. But this is a review title. So I struggled my way through it.

I liked being able to catch up on the characters from the first book. I liked seeing Nick start to change. But I really felt blah about most of the book.

Other readers are really enjoying this book, so please don't just take my word for it. This book is one that just wasn't for me.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher for free as part of the Blogging for Books Program. I was not required to like the book, only give my honest opinion.

In this second book of the Double S Ranch Series, we get Nick's story. Nick is a single dad with two elementary school aged girls. Nick's wife left him and didn't stay in touch with the girls.

What I enjoyed about this novel was the way that Nick realized the motivations behind his marriage and how that impacted the outcome. Nick saw himself as the perfect son. He was the one who stayed to help at the ranch and "deserved" happiness.

I look forward to Trey's story in book three.

I love to read. It is, quite simply, my most favorite thing in all the world to do. There are those times when you open a book to begin reading and you are drawn so far into the story, (from the first paragraph!) that you just don't want to leave it for long. This was such a book. This is Ruth Logan Herne's second book in her Double S Ranch series and just her best ever, in my opinion. I loved everything about it.

Herne has that unique ability to make her readers *feel* everything that is happening in her books. Her characters are so well fleshed out that they feel real, making the reader feel like they are in the room with them, watching all the action from their position as a fly on the wall. Even the secondary characters seem real!

The first book in this series was wonderful, but this one is even better. And, what's even MORE better is that we see all those characters from the first book in great quantity here, too.

Herne deals with a very difficult subject here: abandonment of her children by their mother. Tough subject. Very tough. Children are hurt, sometimes forever, by such a thing. The mother/child bond is the most powerful here on earth, in my opinion. Children long for their mother's approval and love. There is so much hurt here, but Herne handles it with such a deft hand that the reader is amazed.

Truly, this was a most excellent novel and as I read the excerpt from Book # 3 in the series, I wept. I really did. I enjoyed every single minute of this book and now I'm so sad it's over. Sometimes you don't know whether to read slowly and prolong the pleasure or read faster to find out what's happened. I'm going to be living with these characters a while. I guarantee you that. I absolutely am longing for book # 3! I can't read it soon enough. I love the Stafford family. I highly recommend this book.

Home on the Range is a great addition to the Double S Ranch series, yet can be read as a stand alone, too. Since the characters are family members who appear in each book, I would personally recommend reading these novels in order, to enhance the reading experience.

This story was packed with emotion. I had to set this book down so many times because of the issues that were being dealt with. There was Elsa and the past trauma she experienced and Nick with the feelings of abandonment and failure that he carried around. Watching the stirrings of romance between these two while they battled their pasts was touching.

The very hard parts to read about for me were when I was reading about Nick’s oldest daughter, Cheyenne. She was so wounded from her mother’s abandonment years earlier. It was hard to read about her behavior and the way she either resented or lashed out toward people. I knew why she reacted the way she did, but it was still tough to see her being rude or bratty to the people who were trying to love her.

This was a very engaging story with a lot of heart. The character growth for Nick, Elsa, and especially Cheyenne felt realistic.

I received a complimentary copy of of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Cowboys, western wear, and puppies... What's not to like?

Home on the Range was an enjoyable story about family, faith, and second chances. I especially liked how the author so expertly used the therapy angle. I've seen it used before in books, but it usually makes me feel like I've gone through a crash course in psychology 101. This book, though... the therapy was a beautiful part of the story, enhancing and drawing out the best parts of the themes.

There were a couple of noticeable point-of-view switches, otherwise known as head-hopping, and I wasn't a fan of the heavy emphasis on alcoholism, but I understood it. Those are the reasons why this isn't a four-star read to me.

I loved the aspects of faith, building of legacies, protecting kids, learning to cling to God rather than attempt to please people, and giving second chances just as much as you take them. I'm looking forward to the third installment of the Double S Ranch series. It comes out next spring, and I can hardly wait.

The second in Ruth Logan Herne's 'Double S Ranch' Series, Home on the Range, takes on second son Nick Stafford's story. In the first book - Back in the Saddle, we actually get a good insight into Nick's life and his challenges raising his 2 daughters alone, abandoned by his wife years earlier. I felt a connection to him while reading that book, and so was really hoping this series would continue and that Nick would be next. Its always interesting to see what route an author will take with a character, and it was a pleasant surprise that she brought child phycologist Dr Elsa Andreas into his life. Her sister is the principal of the school Nick's daughters attend, and the oldest Cheyenne, is struggling in many ways, which as it does for children - often shows itself in the school work, and grades & their ability to interact with peers and adults in their life. In fact, it was quite comfortable reading, in today's society I feel like we are more aware of the issues that children can face, we talk about it more openly, and a certain level of understanding a desire to help the child is more prominent than in past generations. I found it helpful even as a parent, to read some of the lines of this book. In many of the situations Nick & Elsa found themselves in, they were able to handle something in a much more calm and prepared state than I think most of do today in reality. It teaches you to think before you act, and to consider the implications of 'reacting' to anothers words or deeds before you choose how to respond. This is especially true, when the sudden arrival of Whitney, Nick's ex-wife and estranged mother to the girls. She adds an interesting mix. I especially enjoyed that Nick & Elsa, were open to the possibility of the feelings that were developing for each other. This is not the norm in contemporary romance fiction, often there is a desperate inner battle to fight against the emotion until much later in the book, whereas this came at a much more natural steady pace, and I think a lot more realistic. I enjoyed the flow of the story. There was no huge chunks of wasted space in this book, you can read this book and get lost in the beauty of the descriptions of the area, the inter relations of those that work on the ranch, and a sufficient inclusion of Colt & Angelina to feel content at the flow from the first book into the second. As always, with this kind of story, there is the inclusion of the animals and the connection to what is happening to the characters of the book. I liked the verses of inspiration and overall this is an uplifting read - with a strong message, on taking time to recover yourself, from whatever you have faced in life. Then come out stronger on the other side. As always, to put your trust in God, that He will help you through the dark days, and you can bask in the light once again. I absolutely cannot wait for Trey's story, he seems like he has it together, so calm and patient - and I loved that he arrived at 'just the right time' in this story.

I received this book from Waterbrook Multnomah & Blogging for Books. This is my honest review.

When I pick up a novel to read, it is with the hope that I will be swept away by the characters and can become one with their world. It is rare to find an author who can do that, let alone, do it consistently. Ruth Logan Herne is one of those authors that can consistently create a world of characters that pull you in and let you become one with the story. Her newest book, Home on the Range is the second book in her "Double S Ranch" series and it pulled me in from the very first page. The first book in the series, Back in the Saddle (read my review here), was without a doubt the best contemporary novel I read last year and Home on the Range is the best contemporary novel I have read this year.

I loved this book. From start to finish the characters captivated me and pulled me into their story. Nick was a character I met in the first book of the series. I can honestly say I didn't get the warm fuzzier about him in the first book but as the author allowed him to reveal his issues and hurts in this book my heart melted and I grew to love him. Elsa, I liked right away, especially when she started working with the girls, Cheyenne and Dakota. She was sweet yet firm and allowed us to see deep into her hurts and issues as well. Now the girls were special. They had me wrapped around their little fingers right off and I didn't want to say goodbye to them.

Another thing I find rare in an author's work is when they can write in such a way that it engages all five senses in the reader. Ruth Logan Herne did just that in this book. There is a scene on pages 130 -133 that engaged all my senses. Elsa takes the girls into the forest to a small bog. On the way you will hear birds chirping and frogs croaking. You will smell the dampness and earthy smell of the forest. When we get to the bog, we will hear the sound of the Spring Peepers...tree frogs. The characters sit down and listen and it is amazing how I was so transported into this scene that I could feel, hear, see and smell everything that was occurring in that scene and I felt at peace, just as the characters did. This to me is a true gift of story telling and Ms. Logan Herne has truly been blessed with this gift.

I could go on and on about this wonderful book, but I don't believe in giving out spoilers. I will say that this book can be read as a stand-alone book but if you haven't read the first book in the series you might want to pick up a copy and read it first. I would highly recommend both books in this series. Home on the Range, releases on September 17, 2016.

I am looking forward to the third book in this series, Peace in the Valley, which is due to be out in March 2017. This will be Trey Stafford's story and I'm anxious to learn more about him.

On a 5-Star Scale = 5 HUGE Stars!!!!!

I would like to thank the author Ruth Logan Herne for my copy of Home on the Range. I received my copy for free in order to read it and give my honest review.

First off -- let's take a moment to savor that cover. Doesn't it make your heart all melty and turn your knees so wobbly it feels like your bones have been replaced by cooked spaghetti? Insert blissful sigh here. And the book delivers exactly what that beguiling cover promises.

Second -- I want to live in a hobbit house in the woods. Yes, that's my takeaway from reading this book. Not the only one...but important nonetheless.

Herne excels at reminding us of what matters most. Life is messy but God will see you through...if you let Him. That's a tough lesson to remember in the midst of family drama. Nick is barely hanging on, trying to figure out how things got so gnarled up. I can tell you -- Stafford male pride. But really -- what kind of cowboy hero isn't all prickly proud and of the "I can do it myself" mentality? And isn't that why we love them so much? And want to bop them over the head until some sense rattles through their brains?

Elsa is an intriguing mix of tough vulnerability. I love the inner strength that dictates her healing on her terms. And the way she handles Nick and his girls is sheer brilliance. She's unflappable, though not immune to the guy who is "a twelve on a 'smokin' hot cowboy' one-to-ten rating system." (p.9) Their romance is delectably slow and halting. There's plenty of complications and two sweet girls to protect after all.

And, oh mercy, the angst! I had to read with one eye closed as I braced myself for one particular situation. I kept thinking, "Ruthy wouldn't do that to her readers, would she?" Of course she did! But that's life, isn't it? Full of twists and turns that sometimes include desperate circumstances.

Fans of the first book, Back in the Saddle, will be thrilled to meet up again with Colt and Angelina. There's nothing like a teasing brother who also has your back. And the Double S ranch is the perfect backdrop of an epic family saga.

Real and raw and peppered with grit. The kind of story that can make a difference if you let it.

My thanks to the author for gifting me with a copy of this book.

Home on the Range was a nice change for me to read. It had little romance. It did it through family then set it all on romance like normal romance books. Ruth Logan Herne doe a wonderfully good job with her book.

This book is based on a single father raising his two daughters. Will he better than his father Sam Stafford. Nick wants to outdo his father and learn it hard to do. Being there for his girls is more important than it is being a ranch hand or owner.

Nick got to deal with this oldest daughter anger and to do that he goes to start therapy to help his daughter. He learns lesson as well as help out a woman named Elsa as well. There seems to be secrets and twist and turns that ever page turned from binging to end. There seems to be forgiven and courage throughout the book. Will they get what needed or will it all fall apart?

You know it's a good book when it leaves tears in your eyes. I believe I said that about the first book in this series, but the same is true for this one. A beautiful story of hurt and healing, letting go and forgiveness. And ranch style cowboys don't hurt either. *I received a copy of this book*

Nick is a single father of two and works on a ranch causing her life to be quite busy. In the hopes that things will just work itself out he's be stalling taking his troubled daughter to a counselor. Now hes faced with the option of his troubled daughter facing a respect of a grade or summer school. Things are looking thought and now he's grudgingly getting the help his daughter needs. Dr. Elsa is the one to help out with counseling his daughter and tutoring the troubled child. But she isn't exactly thrilled out this situation because she has her own past that leaves her wanting not much from anyone at the moment. The longer the two are around eachother things start to get confusing and a few conflicts along the way set things back and they are on a mission to get things working out again.

I'm not even sure if that is a good description of the book but I tried. I have a soft spot for reading books with cowboys and this book was perfect for me. Thing is I didn't realize until halfway through this book that it was book two, so that goes to say that this book does well as a stand alone but would probably be better if the first book is read. I loved that there was plenty going on with the characters that kept be interested. It was interesting seeing the changes the girls went through in the ups and downs of this book. I thought it was interesting getting to konw Elsa's story and seeing why she pretty much turned herself into a hermit. I loved the sweetness of Nick and Elsa's relationship. Overall I thought this was a pretty good book and I really enjoyed it.

Home On the Range is the second book from Ruth Logan Herne's series, Double S Ranch. This installment involves Colt Stafford's brother, Nick. He is still dealing with his ex-wife, Whitney, leaving their family three years earlier. Struggling being a single dad to his two little girls, he gets the help he needs from psychologist Dr. Elsa Andreas. Elsa, too, had her own struggles in the past and has to learn to trust herself and live again. Just when things were coming together, Whitney shows up, turning everyone's world upside down.

I absolutely love the first book of the series, Back in the Saddle, and could not wait to continue the series. Home On the Range did not disappoint! I was not sure if I really cared for Nick when I first was introduced to him and Back in the Saddle. He sure did grow on me! I sure love his sweet little girls. My heart just ache for them not having their mother, but admired Nick's courage and determination to be a good dad to them. They were so cute with Elsa and love the authors comedic references to the Disney movie, Frozen.

I truly enjoyed everything about this story. It is beautiful, tender, well written with some laugh out loud moments, and more importantly, a wonderful reminder it is never too late to forgive and move forward. Looking forward to the third book of the series.

5+ stars.

Take a hard-working cowboy who’s doing the best he can to raise his two precarious daughters after his wife left him years ago, throw in a successful cattle ranch, his rugged elderly father trying to change his ways after several decades, an older brother who returned not long ago and soon-to-be married to the best house manager around & a washed up children’s therapist and you got yourself the makings of a whooper of a story!

I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the Double S ranch to learn of Nick’s story. He likens himself to the brother of the prodigal son who stayed to help his family. The one who feels he has everything to prove with nothing to show for it, except two girls who are so different and test him at every turn. Finally realizing the need to ask for outside help to deal with Cheyenne—the oldest one—he meets Elsa, a child therapist who has a hidden past. These two butt heads at first & she is reluctant to get involved, and that makes for a whole lot of sparks to fly! Eventually she gives in to both her sisters demands and a chance to be free of a painful past. Bolstered by a successful first meet and instant connection with the little girl, thus begins the healing process—not only for her and the girls but maybe just Nick himself too?

This author knows her stuff when it comes to writing family sagas. The emotional depth she portrays through each of her true-to-life characters not only connects me to them, but makes them literally leap off the pages! I enjoyed not only getting to know Nick more, but reconnecting with his father Sam; his older brother Colt & his bride-to-be Angela; Angela’s mother & son, Isabo and Noah; and a smattering of ranch hands. There were quite a few surprising twists and turns that I had no idea how the family would react to each one, but the author handled each with the grace I’ve come to expect from her. She knows how to take the reader from the highest heights and lowest valleys emotionally wise. And her spiritual wisdom comes straight from Father God’s heart! I loved seeing the characters grow in their faith, bolstering each other in reminding them of various times when God was there for each of them or just stating a well-placed scripture or two. And the love story between Nick and Elsa?? Absolutely exquisite!! They both have past hurts and trust issues & I loved seeing them work together through them, so a sweet & poignant –it melted this readers heart! There are so many facets and layers between the lines of this book, some of them took my breath away or made me sigh with contentment. I’ve come to love this authors writing and her way of handling life’s messes with grace, mercy and love. Her faith shines through and refreshes my spirit, reminding me of God’s infinite love for me! I absolutely can’t wait for the next installment of this wonderfully powerful and emotional series “Peace in the Valley”—youngest brother Trey’s story. I can’t recommend this book or series enough, especially if you love stories of redemption, love, faith and with all the emotional depth you can handle!

"God wants his children joyful . . . . . throw off the mantle of sadness and wear joy."

Family life is messy, it's never easy, it's comprised of imperfect people who love fiercely, anger easily and grieve deeply. Nick Stafford knows how messy family life can be from the inside out, as he struggles to be a single parent while still reeling from the abandonment of his own mother years ago. His older daughter, in particular, needs professional guidance, so when Nick acquiesces to her principal's suggestion, he never expected to meet a reclusive, but utterly lovely, wood nymph by the name of Dr. Elsa Andreas.

Elsa retreated to her hobbit-style house in the forest on purpose. Emotionally damaged from public tragedy and misplaced guilt, she has scarcely made her presence known in the small town community of Gray's Glen, Washington. When a larger-than-life cowboy appears at her doorstep with his two adorable girls, begrudgingly asking for help, her immediate response is "to take one step back and shut the door in his face". Fortunately, that awkward introduction is rewound and Elsa finds herself drawn into all things "Stafford", threatening her professionalism and eventually her heart.

Ruth Logan Herne's second addition to her "Double S Ranch" series is a good one, full of life lessons for families with any and all combinations, including a powerful reminder that forgiveness will always trump regret.

Here’s a fun fact. I got to meet Ruth Logan Herne (and a bunch of other Christian fiction authors) at the Christian Fiction Readers’ Retreat this summer. It was a blessing to get to learn more about several of my favorite authors—and there was lots of laughter throughout the day.

But let’s get back to why you’re here. Readers met Nick Stafford and his daughters in Back in the Saddle but we get to know this little family more in Home on the Range. As Nick’s oldest daughter Cheyenne struggles with school, she’s on the verge of being held back. When the principal suggests a counselor, Nick is unsure. Surely he can help his daughter—both of his daughters. He doesn’t need any help.
These two characters were a perfect fit for each other. Nick’s a gentleman at heard, caring for the little ladies (and the new woman) in his life. Elsa is patient and everything Nick needs in his hectic life.

The author depicts life on the farm (the good and the bad) in a beautiful way. And since some of my family lives in Washington State, I could picture the Stafford Ranch clearly in my head. Even if you’ve never been to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, you’ll experience it in Home on the Range.

The author can certainly write children! Especially sisters (boy, did Cheyenne and Dakota remind me of my cousins at that age). These are no two precocious little angels--they are the usual sort of children who whine, cry, sulk, and fight. They know exactly which buttons to push to get a bigger rise out of the other. And just when you're ready to break down and give up, they hit you right in the heart with how sweet they can be.

I liked Elsa a lot--she's not at all the stereotype of a child psychologist. She's sensible, fun, and quite mom-like, but without the heightened emotions of this being Her Own Troubled Kid she's dealing with.

To me, it felt like Nick's reaction to Elsa's reveal of her history was overblown, but then I don't have abandonment and trust issues like he does. However, I felt that the situation with Whitney (the girls' mom) was done really well--the characters acted with wisdom even in the face of her manipulation and antagonism. It's a good example for anyone dealing with a manipulative and untrustworthy relationship--"wise as serpents and innocent as doves" in action. Godly and loving, yet with very necessary boundaries.

Side note: the dance dad thing is pretty cute.

Nick has done everything right in his life, or at least has tried. He's at a point in his life now that he needs to do whats right for his girls, even with the world around him seems to be falling apart. When his family pushes him to take his girls to a therapist he is non to happy but he knows he needs to do right by them. Will he be able to convince Elsa this is whats best for his family and get her to help?
Elsa is facing some demons from the past and she is not happy that her sister keeps pushing for her to things that are just out of her comfort zone. Will she be able to face the past and find a future that she always wanted?
I really, really loved this book. I felt like I was catching up with friends not reading a book. I really loved how the characters felt like the situations were very much real and could happen in life and not just fiction. The storyline is well written and gets to the heart of the matter. I loved how life is not perfect, and the author didn't try to make it that, no matter how much you try and protect the children its not always that way and that came across in this book. This book will not disappoint and is the perfect read and reminds you that at the end of the day Family is whats most important. This book will not disappoint and you can't go wrong, totally worth the read.

Nick stayed on the ranch when his brothers left for greener pastures. He dealt with his strong-willed father and raised his daughters alone when his wife abandoned them. But now the effects of that abandonment are starting to show themselves in his daughters. Nick will do anything for them, but isn't thrilled with the idea of a therapist. Especially one who lives in a hobbit home in the middle of nowhere. But Elsa seems to be reaching Cheyenne, his eldest, in a way he never could. Maybe things are beginning to look up for a change.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and this one followed in the same path. The characters are so authentic and have depth. The people and descriptions jump off the page and create a wonderful scene for me to envision. I think the book could be read as a stand-alone, but with characters from the first book playing major roles in this one as well, I would recommend reading book one. You won't be disappointed. The author draws from the family's conflicts and ties in messages of forgiveness, patience, love, and family without coming across as preachy or overdone. I loved the flow of the plot and how the situations were resolved in a realistic manner. Can't wait to read the book about the third brother when it comes out.

Home on the Range is the second book in the Double S Ranch series and I haven't read the first book, but it was not a problem at all. Actually I didn't even realize it was a sequel until I finished the book. I was able to follow the characters and the plot line just fine.

I would not normally choose a book about cowboys or a ranch, but I did enjoy this one. Really in the end it is a love story more than a cowboy story. Rancher, Nick Stafford, has two daughters who need counseling after their mother deserts them. They begin seeing Dr. Elsa Andreas, who has struggled with her own issues. Healing and love soon blossom.

Really, even more than the love story, I was touched by the family story. The Stafford family has had its problems, but each member is learning how to love and is finding his or way back to God. They work hard on the ranch, but they also love (and eat) well. Redemption is a major theme of this book and I was blessed by that.

Home on the Range is about family, love, trust and forgiveness. It's about being broken and about loss and togetherness. It's about learning to lean on our Heavenly Father for strength, guidance and comfort. Filled with drama, as well as light moments, my heart broke with the characters, my smile mirrored theirs, and my tears shed as the story takes us there. I've lived with these characters, and love is not a strong enough word to tell you how highly I think of Home on the Range. I can't wait for Trey's story in Peace in the Valley .

The Stafford family took up residence in my reader heart during Back in the Saddle yet Ruth Logan Herne managed to make me love them even more here in Home on the Range! I felt a strong kinship to both main characters in this story and saw many of my own strengths and weaknesses come to life on the pages.

Ruth Logan Herne is a master at creating authentic child characters and Cheyenne and Dakota are my favorite yet! These little girls are perfectly complex and unique with age appropriate behaviors and mannerisms. More often than not, authors focus on adult characters and leave the children to act as fillers or props. Herne stands out and brings entire families to life.

This series is going on my all-time favorites list. It's fabulous and I highly recommend it!

No family is perfect, and the Staffords are no exception. Broken families need a little tender loving care. Some need a lot!

I loved the characters of Back in the Saddle (Double S Ranch, book 1). Home on the Range picks up right where we left off, like getting together again with good friends. Nick's two girls, while opposites, tug equally on your heart. My psychology-loving self also adored Elsa and her compassion for the family.

The events in the story may not have been surprising, but the characters' journeys seemed realistic and relatable.

Because of the interconnected stories, this is one series I would recommend reading in order. Now I'm anxious to read Trey's story! If you're in the mood for a lighter read or a "trip" to the rural Pacific Northwest, Home on the Range (and the Double S Ranch series) may be just what you're looking for!

This is the second book in a series and so far my favorite! We are back to Double S Ranch and Nick is raising his two girls by himself. I found the characters to be very realistic. The setting is wonderful and I loved to read all the struggles of each person. It makes it more realistic and easier to read and believe. Elsa is a wonderful character as her and Nick are rather forced in meeting. I love that her past is a secret until the end of the book, very well written. There was a lot of heart put into the details of this novel and this one is made unique with the two little girls. I was very pleased with this contemporary cowboy read.
Five stars.

No tears, but close.

Nick Stafford is looking to help his oldest daughter, Cheyenne, adjust her attitude. Cheyenne doesn't care about school and does whatever she wants, despite being told not to. After her action land her in an accident, Nick realizes he needs help.

Elsa, a former psychologist, finally agrees to help the handsome cowboy and his daughter, although she first slams her door in his face.

As time progresses, Elsa realizes Cheyenne is responding to being abandoned by her mother, just like Nick was. Nick begins to fall for Elsa before he learns of her past.

Herne's story-telling is slow and steady with solid character development and conflicts spaced appropriately to encourage readers to enjoy the journey.

Home on the Range is a wonderful addition to the Double S Ranch Series. Herne does a marvelous job of crafting believable characters and drawing you into their story. I couldn't wait to dive into this one and had no trouble making my way through it yesterday.

These little girls and their Dad will capture your heart and Elsa is a delightful addition to the cast. Really looking forward to Book 3, due out May 2017!
