Trouble #2

Trouble Makes a Comeback

Rate this book
“How do you like life in the fast lane?” Digby said. “Is it everything you thought it would be?”

Good question.

Achieving high school “normal” wasn’t as hard as Zoe Webster expected, but she’s beginning to think Hollywood oversold how much fun it all is. Isn’t dating a jock supposed to be one long Instagram dream? Shouldn’t she enjoy gossiping 24/7 with her two BFFs? And isn’t this, the last year before the finish line that is Princeton, meant to be one of her best? If “normal” is the high school goal, why can’t Zoe get Philip Digby—decidedly abnormal, completely chaotic, possibly unbalanced, undoubtedly rude, and somehow…entirely magnetic—out of her mind?

However normal Zoe’s life finally is, it’s about to get blown up (metaphorically. This time. She hopes, anyway.*) when Digby shows up on her doorstep. Again. Needing her help to find his kidnapped sister. Still. Full of over-the-top schemes and ready to send Zoe’s life into a higher gear. Again.

It’s time for Zoe Webster to choose between staying in the normal lane, or taking a major detour with Digby (and finally figuring out what that stolen kiss actually meant to him).

Guess which she chooses?

* This is a mistake; Zoe should know better than to expect there not to be explosions when Digby is in town.

REVIEW:
THIS BOOK WAS UNBELIEVABLE AND I COULDN'T EXPECT ANY LESS. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! *By the way, I'm reviewing the ARC of this novel*
description

I loved every minute of this book! This was so much better than the first one. In the first book, Digby left at the end of Trouble Is a Friend of Mine. Now, he's back when Zoe's life changed. We also have the whole gang back-Sloane, Bill, etc. There was a quote at the back of the ARC saying that it's a combination of Veronica Mars and The Breakfast Club. At first, I wasn't seeing it. I can see it now after reading the book. I don't know how and why, but Digby always had that ability to turn things upside down. Just as Zoe is getting a new life, it ends up being more complicated during Digby's arrival.
description

I'm trying my best not to spoil, but if you ship Digby and Zoe in the first book, then you are in for a treat.
"Still not wearing your retainer, I see."
He wiped off the sweat from my top lip.

Oh, and there is a love triangle. I surprisingly found it endearing. I know, I'm weird.
description
Remember when I mentioned that Zoe's life changed when Digby left?
"Austin Schaeffer, huh? You teach him the difference between left and right yet?"

description
description
I closed my eyes for our kiss and when I opened them, I was shocked to see Digby standing directly behind Austin.
I said, "Digby."
Austin said, "Austin."
Digby said, "Zoe."
"Digby," Austin said. "Why am I even surprised?"

This book definitely made me laugh out loud.
I will be disappointed if this is the last book, because were left hanging in the end.

At this point I love this series so much, the only way I will cope with the wait until book 3 is re-reading the first 2. Some random thoughts because my feelings are still all over the place:

- OTP is gold and I finished this book with a silly smile on my face because of that.

- the love triangle was kind of dragged but honestly it didn't bothered me, it was pretty clear what was going to happen and I think it was necessary so Zoe could have a character development, realizing what she thought she wanted versus what she really wants in terms of friendship/romance.

- seeing Zoe and Sloane bound was the best thing, in the first one it was a thing that bothered that Zoe only hanged out with the boys and when she would talk with other girls there was always judgment and even slut-shamming.

- the sort of misfits group is still going strong and I love them all to pieces.

- can someone please kill Bill (omg, kill bill, ok, stop), she is so annoying.

- book 3 now please, because those discoveries were like wow and now I have to wait more than a year probably and oh my god, why god why.

I'm not sure what compelled me to download this book, seeing as I didn't really care for the first one, but I'm glad I did.

Zoe and Digby are so irrational and semi-dysfunctional and somehow it really works for them. I really liked the aspect of Zoe trying to be "normal" and the additional characters that brought in. Sloane was especially fun.

The plot was crazy and completely unbelievable and yet I was captivated from the beginning. There was still a lot of eye rolling and I couldn't commit to just enjoying the story, regardless of how fantastical it was.

Overall, I liked this one a lot a lot a lot more than the first one and if there's going to be another book, I'll definitely read it.

**Huge thanks to Kathy Dawson Books and Edelweiss for providing the arc free of charge**

The dream team of Zoe and Digby are back, and I couldn't be happier. The second book in the - gasp! - apparent trilogy steps on the gas from the moment the book opens and doesn't stop the wild ride until the very last page. Tromly has created an almost absurd romp and caper that includes snappy dialogue, tons of snark, and a cast of supporting characters that are endlessly entertaining. There are drug dealers and kidnappers and reclusive millionaires oh my! But let's be honest: we're here for the Digby/Zoe dynamic, and this doesn't disappoint. My only frustration is that now I have another year or two to wait and find out where they're going to take us next.

And yes I begged for an early copy and you bet your ass I stayed up and read it all in one sitting.

I heartily enjoyed this one probably better than the first book. I love seeing Zoe and Digby together accompanied by the quaint cast. I died laughing. Nobody writes a delightful witty story like Tromly. Though, Kevin Kwan is totally an exception to that. I can't wait enough for the next book.

This one did not disappoint! I do think there was a lot more build up for the larger mystery ahead (which I'm assuming will all come together in book 3...?) then there was in the first. There's definitely a Veronica Mars vibe (as the book jacket of the first promised) and for some reason I noticed it a bit more in this one. Zoe takes the lead more often instead of just always being dragged along on Digby's crazy quests. There weren't as many laugh out loud moments as the first, but I liked the ending. This was a great sequel and I can't wait to read the next one. :)

I enjoyed "Trouble Makes a Comeback" as much as I enjoyed the preceding "Trouble is a Friend of Mine". I enjoy Ms. Tromly's writing style and use of humor. She excels at character development (including the unlikable characters) and I cannot wait for the third book in the story; just don't listen to the fans on Twitter who think killing off the protagonist, Digby, is a good idea! I will definitely be looking forward to more of this author's works in the future!

I have the silliest smile on my face right now. This OTP tho srsly.
So so good. I'm obsessed with Zoe and Digby. And their little group of misfits; Felix, Henry & Sloane.
These books are the best kind of feel-good, dark and intelligent mystery & humour combination.
I hope there's a third book coming! THERE BETTER BE!

This felt like such a filler book, like a stepping stone to the real mystery that will unravel in the next book. Really wasn't a fan of the relationship between Zoe and Digby in this one, either, so I'm disappointed with how trivial everything felt compared to the first book. BUT, I'm not giving up hope and I still want to know what happened to Digby's sister, so I'll keep my eyes out for book three.

A great addition to the Trouble series. Here the focus was much less on the loose mystery and much more on the romance than in Trouble Is a Friend of Mine... which I couldn't possibly hate.

The character growth was pretty strong in the last book and was therefore pretty much nonexistant in this book. I suppose that's the benefit you get from writing a very strong first book in a trilogy. The romance was palpable. I'm not a fan of love triangles (maybe it was more of a rectangle?) but it was so so sweet in here. And the love triangle (again, rectangle?) didn't stand a chance, really Digby and Zoe only had eyes for each other in this book. And it was hilarious how Digby kept popping up everywhere to annoy the hell out of Zoe's "boyfriend".

Once again, the hanging mystery at the end of the book was an invitation to read the next book. Which I can't wait to do!

Not as funny as the first book, but I guess that's to be expected when things get a lot darker in the sequel. Is the story plausible? Heck no, but that's not why I read books like these.

Digby's back, and the team is getting back together for even crazier shenanigans! Digby's matured a little (but he's still the irreverent, fast-talking nerd from book 1) and he's still hunting down the people who kidnapped his little sister and destroyed his family. Zoe's finally gotten her life back to normal, just in time for Digby to come crashing back in. Yeah, there's a love triangle....but it's pretty fun to read because Digby's just so extra.

Zoe makes an even better John to Digby's Sherlock, and I really loved seeing her pull her own stunts, handle her father, and define herself. She's gotten much, much better at putting Digby in his place and working around his quirks.

description

The first half of the book is still pretty light, so you'll get fun bits like:

“Did you tell Henry you were coming here?”

“As every Cosmo girl knows, keeping secrets from each other is a Relationship Don’t. The honesty you give is the honesty you get,” Digby said. But Sloane looked genuinely worried, so he said, “Relax, I said I was taking Princeton to lunch. I didn’t tell him where.”

and

“And why is your phone ringing non-stop on a Sunday morning?”

Mom sighed. “I have crap going on. It’s why I love your teen drama so much.” She started typing a response. “My crap is just so . . . middle-aged.”

The second half of the book got a lot more intense than I was expecting, but I loved it. It was a bit like jumping from Veronica Mars to BBC Sherlock and it threw me a little, but the stakes are gonna be higher than ever in book 3. I'm unbelievably excited to see how Tromly pulls everything together.

How do you expect me to move on from this? I find myself wondering how, like Digby, my life will be after (if ever) we find out what happened to Sally. So now we wait? But we dread the wait. At the same time, we dread what we would find at the end of the wait.

So, Stephanie Tromly, how do we move on from this? When's it going to end? Are we ever going to escape from Planet Digby? Will we ever want to?

The real review of the book: The slow reader in me got kicked into high gear, and I couldn't wait until I could get to the last page though I dreaded the after-book experience of having to figure what to do after.

People who would probably like this book: readers who like a good mystery, a charmingly confusing guy, an equally confused girl, and the love-hate relationship of teenagers with life.

Fall in love with Digby. Then get annoyed because you never really know what he's thinking.

Super entertaining and interesting. It was light even when Zoe and Digby got into a lot of trouble. It was definitely fun.

The characters were amazing like in the past book, however the Mom keeps being the weakest character. After everything she went through with her ex-husband she still acts like a stupid teenager in this book.

Re-read April 2022

3.5

I had forgotten how much I disliked the mom in this book, she is so immature and annoying. Cooper could do much better than her. The teenage drama makes sense but the mother was too much.

Good but not as great as the first book. Would definitely read the third instalment if it was out now but spring 2018? Doubt I would remember all the shenanigans which means as with many series books I've read I doubt I'll still be interested when it's finally published. Shame but who knows ...

Maybe an iota less epic than the first book in the series, but still pretty darn addictive. I LOVE the evolution of the Princeton-Sloane friendship in this book. The charm, snark, quirk, and shenanigans still carry on. Can't get enough of these characters. What can I say, I love these crazy kids.

**I received a copy of this book via NetGalley**

So I admittedly did not realise this was book 2 in a series when I requested this and have not read book 1 so this will simply be a breakdown of my thoughts rather than a full review.

* This book is populated with fun and wonderful characters. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Zoe and Digby but I was particularly taken by the misfit kids who made up the rest of the gang.

* The writing in this is really fun, witty and heartfelt and it certainly made for an adorable read. The story is incredibly fast paced and as far as contemporaries go, it has all the gooey parts that make for a good read.

* There are some great laugh out loud moments thanks to Tromly’s stellar writing as well as some hilarious hijinks by Zoe and the gang.

* Downside? A love triangle

Has anyone read book 1? Would love to know your thoughts.

I stumbled upon the previous book in this series by accident, read it and really enjoyed it. When I saw the second book was on NetGalley I had to find out what happened next. Does Zoe get her peaceful life, and what about that kiss!!!
Trouble Makes a Comeback picks up a few months after the previous book. Zoe is in a relationship with Austin, and her previous actions have long since been forgotten. More people are accepting of her, and her Mum has a boyfriend who Zoe likes. Most importantly Zoe has a job at the bookshop in the mall, her boss, Fisher, is pretty strange but laid back. Life is going swimmingly until Digby returns to the scene.

We all know Digbys arrival means trouble, and immediately we see this in action. His questioning about Fisher, her life at school, and also updates on the criminal that is behind bars, hoping to find any lead that solves the mystery of his missing sister.

Trouble Makes a Comeback was a book I knew what to expect from, with crazy investigations and schemes up his sleeve, life with Digby is never a dull moment. But Zoe is determined to hold onto her 'normality' for as long as possible, but quickly finds herself becoming distant from her friends and boyfriend, but becoming somewhat closer to an unexpected person. I love how crazy and unexpected this book was, it definitely keeps you on your toes over what mishap will happen next. I loved the adventures that the characters took me on, and definitely felt nervous with a few of thier encounters.

Trouble Makes a Comeback was exactly what I expected, but I did find myself enjoying this one more than the previous book. However I did feel sorry for Zoe, with Digbys arrival her plans have gone astray, and initially is unwilling to have any contact with him and follow him on his stupid investigations, but she isn't one to let her friends get themselves into danger, even if it means making sacrifices with er own friends, and this is one of the many reasons I love this friendship between Digby and Zoe, they are crazy, get up to mischief, and nothing goes as planned, but they are perfect for each other.

Final Verdict
I really enjoyed Trouble Makes a Comeback, and the ending has me needing to have the next book in my hands, eager to find out how this new plan is meant to happen and go down without a hitch.

Update 2019: Reread this, and I only have positive feelings.

2016 Review:
This series is so much fucking fun, I swear. There should be more humor novels in YA. While I don’t think Trouble Makes a Comeback was quite as pitch perfect as Trouble Is a Friend of Mine, I once again read the whole thing in just a few hours, totally caught up in the hilarity.

For the most part, I dropped the rating because I feel like the plot arc of this novel’s less cohesive and satisfying. Plot-wise, there’s a bit of a sophomore slump going on. That doesn’t make it less entertaining, but the resolution of this book’s plot is very similar to how book one ended. Most of the plotting time goes into the overarching plot of Digby’s kidnapped sister, and book three should be fantastic. DO NEED.

Also, the shipping is at a high frustration level here. After book one, Digby left town and didn’t talk to Zoe until he came back four months later. In the meantime, she started dating Austin, aka quarterback junior or whatever it’s called when you’re not the starter. This, in and of itself, is fine, because I totally believe these weirdos would mess up feelings and not call, and it’s cool that she could move on a bit and try out that different life she kind of thought she wanted. However, the fact that he once again picks up with Bill to make her jealous or something was ugh. And both Bill and Austin are such pieces of shit that this double love triangle nonsense was annoying.

This all sounds very negative, I realize, but it’s just that I don’t have a ton to say about all the awesome stuff because that’s unchanged from my book one review. The banter’s on point, Digby’s amazing, etc. I will say that Sloane totally lived up to my expectations, and I am loving the tentative friendship growing between Sloane and Zoe.

Most excellent fun is to be had here, and I am not thrilled about waiting a year until book three. The waits always seem even longer when the next book in the series hasn’t even been announced and put on Goodreads yet. *pouts*

Everyone knows, when it comes to acting, comedians are the best actors out there because comedy is THE HARDEST thing to get right. I will say that same about writing. And Stephanie Tromly NAILS IT. These books, you guys. Just read them, please. It will make your day. I'm so pleased this second book is just as amazing as the first. Seriously, SO MUCH FUN and the writing is superb, and the characters! Bravo, Stephanie! <3

Verdict: Digby and Zoe are the most delightfully snarky and ship-worthy spying duo to exist.

Reading about them makes me feel like

Of course the plot is very zany and wacky yet clever and I appreciated getting back to spy hijinks with the crew, Sloane included, and I am so excited for this third book please give it to me now.

Suffers from middle book syndrome (everything introduced in a rush, nothing resolved) as well as characterizations, plot points, and dialogue that rely heavily on cliche and feel totally unrealistic. Audio performance is nice, but enough to redeem the writing.
