Rate this book
Where to Go When: The Americas highlights the very best North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean have to offer, and suggests the perfect time of year to enjoy each destination.

Written by a team of travel experts, this book combines informative narrative with beautiful photography to present more than 350 vacation ideas and experiences. Six different themes-Festivals & Carnivals, Natural Wonders, Active Adventures, Unforgettable Journeys, Luxury & Romance, and Family Getaways-ensure that there is something for everyone.

From the remote Alaskan tundra to the lush Amazonian rainforest-via buzzing cities, island beaches, deserts, great lakes, and ancient ruins-the landscapes, cultures, and peoples of the Americas couldn't be more diverse. Cruise the inside passage to Alaska through stunning fjord-like channels; saddle up at the Rocky Mountains Dude Ranch in Montana; bask in the crystalline waters or on the powder white beaches of Anguilla; and so much more.

With it's simple month-by-month format, Where to Go When: The Americas makes planning the ideal vacation even easier, whether you are looking for the perfect romantic getaway in winter, a fun family trip in July, or an autumn-time adventure.

Venezuela: might want to wait to visit there,
until that country's economy stabilizes.

I'm a sucker for these kind of big, visually stunning books that inspire the urge to travel. I can't squeeze in nearly enough trips to keep up with all the places they list, but that doesn't make them much less enjoyable.

I appreciate that this book isn't trying too hard to dig up obscure destinations; sometimes authors of books of this type try too hard to show they can find unlikely destinations. My personal preference would have been for a few more destination in the U.S. If I ever do get to many South American destinations, then honestly, they are going to be some of the most obvious choices.

The practical information in the books won't fit a lot of travelers. The price estimates are high. Unless you're going to stay in deluxe accomodations, book a lot of expensive add-on private tours and high-end restaurants on your trip, you won't spend as much as the authors estimate. The daily itineraries are inspiring, but I hope no one will try to squeeze as many activities into a single day as the book suggests. I consider myself a high-octane traveler, but I can't cover as many sites in a day as many of these itineraries suggest.

But the practical information isn't really the point with books like this. They are published to give you ideas and inspiration, or to help you engage in a little armchair travel. In that sense, this book succeeds better than most.

I was surprised by how much I loved this book. It had everything that I look for in a travel book: great color photographs, suggested itineraries, and most importantly when the best time is to go!!!

I had borrowed it from the library, but I immediately ordered myself a copy of my own, 'cause this is a book I'll be flipping through frequently.

[2010.07] Nice photographs. Helpful during the brainstorming part of planning our Fall 2010 South America trip. Also added a few places to our "to-go" list for Central America.
