Daughter of Hades #1
Endangered
Chrys has been in the Underworld for thousands of years, hidden away by her father, Hades, from all of the other gods. He's afraid that if someone finds out about her, they will destroy her because of the dichotomous power that she holds, the power of life and death. So she has remained in the Palace of Hades all her life, making very few friends and always bored out of her mind.
Huntley would have never guessed that after he died he would wake up with a beautiful girl standing over him. And that she would be the Dark Lord of the Underworld's daughter. Yet, for some reason, she keeps him around as her tutor, as if he knows anything about the world. But Huntley knows that all she really wants is a friend; being trapped in the Underworld can get pretty lonely.
That is, until Chrys decides she wants to run away to the human world after a big fight with her mother Persephone. Chrys claims her father is just over reacting and that nothing bad will come of it. There's no way that the gods will notice she's there for only a couple of days...right?

What I thought
Chrys is the daughter of Hades and Persephone who has to be hidden from the other gods because of her power. There’s not much to say, this book was ok nothing special. The characters were likable enough just not compelling. It did have a good premise though and I did like the mythology aspects. Sorry that’s all I got to say.

Ok, so I'm struggling with myself because I don't know if I want to give the book 3 or 4 stars. It has everything I love in it but at some parts, I found it a bit choppy and over explained... like the poker game, yet I still read it in a few hours and found myself wanting to find out more, because of this I will settle on 3.5.
Chrys is the daughter of Hades, Greek God of the dead and ruler of the Underworld who can never be known to exist because she has great powers that Zeus himself would frown upon. After thousands of years being stuck in the Underworld but still a teenager her curiosity gets the better of her and she wants to see Earth, who could blame her? Imagine being stuck there all that time with only your father and two other teenage boys to keep you company jeez! The only other person who comes to visit 3 months out the year is her mother Persephone who is married to Hades and is the Daughter of Zeus & Demeter which technically makes Hades her uncle because he is the brother of Zeus but yeah... who are we to judge the gods?!
Hoots did a great job of mixing the present with Greek Mythology which I absolutely loved but sometimes I feel it fell a little flat with the characters. These people are Gods, Goddesses, Demigods, Immortals, Titans and whatever else is lurking around so I believe they could have been built up a little bit better but never the less I still enjoyed it.
I found the book to be really funny and full of banter especially Huntley, he was witty, sarcastic and really made the book! I think Chrys is a really good leading lady and I can only imagine how she will grow through the series which I'm really excited to see. Believe it or not, Pothos was one of my favourites, I like the cheeky overly confidence that he posses.
The book was a good read, easy to follow and leaned more to a young teen audience but still I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read on.

I had heard about this book through some friends on GR. It sounded like a light fantasy which I enjoy so I requested it. Unfortunately I did not enjoy it.
The book begins with Chrys and her father Hades. Chrys has been told by her father that she needs to sit and watch him judge people. To see which parts of the underworld said people will go to. At this point Chrys is so used to the begging and screaming that she doesn't care. The only thing Chrys wants is for this to be over so she can start her tutor session with Hunter.
I didn't finish this because I felt that this was too light for my taste. I felt that at some point it would become ridiculous so I just dropped it. This book is not for me.
However there were some things that I liked. I liked the writing style and the relationship between Chrys and Hades. It was a sweet father-daughter relationship. And slightly complex. These aspects were not enough to save the book for me.
Overall this book was not for me. I recommend it to anyone looking for a light mythology book series.

Wow! This was one amazingly kickA book! The writing was just phenomenally excellent! The storyline was incredibly unique and had me completely enthralled from beginning to end! I'm a huge fan of mythology, so how the author interweaves classic myths into this modernized urban fantasy was flawlessly done. The characters were very well developed and complex with palpable emotions and they felt like actual real people. The details the author put into everything were just amazing and gave me wonderful visualization in my head of the story! This was a really fun, awesome book and I completely enjoyed it! I can't wait for a sequel to roll out!

One of my favourite themes to read about is Greek Mythology and renditions of famous stories , one of them is the tale of Hades and Persephone. In Endangered we discover that the pair had a daughter named Chrysanthemum aka Chrys and she has been living in the Underworld with her dad Hades and learning the family business. She has also been given strict instructions that she isn't allowed to wander outside of the underworld realm as nobody knows she exists as Zeus believes that Hades is sterile and can't have children but of course this hasn't proven to be the case. In Endangered we also glimpse another side of Persephone which actually made me hate her character and like Hades a little more as she is a cougar busy dating and sleeping with as many men as she likes. Persephone only spends 3 months out of the 12 months in the Underworld and hates it here, she would rather spend her time on Earth. Chrys longs to spend some time on Earth and see what it's like , so she gets an idea and soon Chrys, her tutor Huntley and AJ - who is Posiedon's son head to London. While they are there though, it seems that there are other Gods and Goddesses roaming the streets and they are about to use Chrys as a pawn in their games in order to gain power. Can Huntley now a mere mortal save Chrys or will she discover that being the daughter of Hades can benefit her in the game of life and death ?

this is a snarky fun hoot of a book. I feel for chrys and Huntley to some extent. the one I feel for the most and never thought I would say this is Hades. Yes I feel really bad for Hades. And again never thought I would say this he is totally misunderstood, mistreated and deserves a hug. Hades in this story is so wronged by his brothers particularly Zeus and I love the love he has for his daughter who he protects with everything he is.
Chrys is the daughter of Hades, never having left the underworld and her friends are Huntley a human who she finds in the river and I think has feelings for and AJ-a demigod who is the son of Poseidon. Frankly Poseidon got what he deserved in this book from Chrys. I hust hope the one who hurt Chrys the most does as well. He wronged not only Chrys but Hades as well and deserves his wrath. Chrys is adored by her father and Huntley, her mom not so much. Her mom is the one that angers her and drives her to do something stupid. She endangers herself and her friends so she can go to Earth. A place she has never been so she can see what that world is like. Not thinking anything would happen but boy is she wrong and it blows up in a spectacular fashion. So much that you truly do feel for Hades at the end. Heck even Prometheus and Menidoe are on Hades side and feel he has a bad rap and is a nice guy. Hades is so wronged by his brothers and I hope that him and Huntley can work together to help Chrys in the next book out of the predicament she is in due to her rash actions done from anger. You can see the love and adoration Chrys has for her dad and disdain for her mom as well throughout the book. Favorite scene: the poker playing with Hades and reading how Cerberus is a misunderstood puppy.
This is a fun hysterical book. The story is a great twist on gods and demigod and done in a entertaining, snarky at times but fun way. We have Hades as the misunderstood nice guy who loves his daughter and protects with all that he is. He is sad and lonely and gets a bad rap on Earth. His daughter is the light of his life. Huntley and Aj are Chrys’s friends. Huntley is fun loving and mischievous and AJ has an arrogant air of superiority around him.He is also a jackass in my opinion and a coward. Chrys is the snarky mischievous daughter of Hades and Persephone who is curious about what her mom sees that is wonderful about Earth. Her father is her world and she loves him dearly. We see why she is protected so fiercely by her dad in the end of the book and left wondering what is going to happen. It is so sad to see her budding romance squashed, her dad so heartbroken and sad, and her feeling like she let so many down. The story is entertaining and captivating. the characters and their interactions keep you wanting more as you explore the underworld, Earth and see why hiding Chrys was so important as danger comes her way and she makes a decision that saddens many and has then all wondering how they can stop the fate that is now Chrys’s. a truly entertaining book and I am excited to see how this plays out. Again this is a shocker for me to say but I so hope Hades gets to have happiness and win what he wants the most in the end of this series for this is a fun wild riding series if the first book is any indication and one that will keep us sure entertained.

Well ... this book took me by surprise, I did not think I would go to like much , but it did ,so I'm very pleased with it.
Some time ago I was looking forward to read something about mythology, since one of my favorite series ("the goddess test") is of the same genre. I found similarities between the books but Endangered shows be super original although both try to Hades as one of the main characters. So if you liked "The Goddess Test" no doubt you will like "Endangered" and if you've never read anything of mythology you have to give it an opportunity :) .
The type of writing that the book has is one of those you can't stop reading, can assure you that is a fast read , fun and not at all heavy .
As for the characters, I loved Chrys!. Her personality is great and I loved every scene with Hades, besides I understand the why of the majority of their actions .
Also I love Huntley is a very good friend, and I love how protective he is with Chrys, his point of view made me laugh more than once.
And personally I think A.J should have a greater role, is a mysterious character and I am wanting to know more about him
The idea of creating modern gods has been a super original point on creativity for Dani Hoots I've loved that :)
My punctuation has not been higher , because I believe that not much happens during the first part of the book, and that has bored me a bit, but luckily I have not left it because it improves considerably in the second half, where there is more action and intrigue that makes you want to know more.
But in turn I think it's a great book that introduces us to the story and introduces us to the characters (which in my opinion are the best part of all)
The world where history unfolds... I loved it, not to mention that I personally love England so I enjoyed it very much, and that end !!! I can not wait to read the next one , I need to know more :D

Sooooo ..... after being locked out of my Kindle app I've decided to have a bit of a clean up in my various "Books Read" lists. I'm onto my Couldn't-Get-Into-It-May-Try-Again pile now, which is where I will, in the future, slot books that I couldn't get through first read for whatever reason. I'll then go back to the list after a good length of time and either DNF it or put it into a new list.
As of 7th May 2022 I've decided this isn't a book for me, so I'm moving it to a new list of It's-Not-You-It's-Me pile. I've also changed my rating to 2.5 🌟 instead of 3, which I think will be my standard rating for all books that come under that list.

I would say the series is aimed at YOUNG YA readers and so, missed the mark for me. I think it would be a wonderful series for young readers, just not for me. Plus I was constantly flipping between the book and Google for info on the mentioned Greek mythological characters.

Loved the story. Not a big fan of some of the language. I don't feel it's necessary to drop the f bomb to get a point across. I'm also not a fan of the Persephone of this story. Hades and Persephone has always been one of my favorite stories of Greek mythology. I always thought Hades got a bad rap. He and Apollo are my favorite Olympians.
Chrys, daughter of Hades, is a wonderful character. She's a normal teenager who just wants to explore. The fact that she's a goddess and stronger than just about all the Olympians together, well, Hades keeps her hidden for just this reason. She has a tutor, human, named Huntley. He's quite a character.
Without going too much into the story, and giving away anything, if you're a fan of Greek mythology, you will LOVE this story. It's the first in a series. I can't wait for the next book. In the meantime, I'll just pick up a few of Dani Hoots' other books to keep me company while I wait for book #2 in this series.

This book was a surprise and a fun read.
I was intrigued because of the Greek mythology.It was really good.
Chrys is the daughter of Hades and she is hidden by her father because of her power.So she remains
in the palace in Underworld.Getting to know the mythology was nice.
I loved that the author showed the gods as humans and I loved Chrys and the relation she had with her father.
This book really warmed me to Hades,the Lord of the Underworld.
Then there is Huntley,Chrys's tutor,a human and her friend.I wonder where things will go between two of them.He is sweet and loyal to Chrys.
There were many characters that I wish to see again.
Thoroughly enjoyed it but the only problem were a bit of typos. Anyone interested in the Greek mythology should give this book a try.And that end,can't wait for the next one.

I am so happy to be back with my beloved Greek gods and especially Hades. Hades has always been one of my favorites with Ares god of war. Ok, I will be honest and admit that I do love a few more but I always thought that the story of Hades and Persephone was totally cute (Plus it is a lovely explanation on why we have the different seasons).
In this baby, Hades and Persephone have been married for eons and they have a daughter Chrys that no one especially Zeus knows about. Chrys has been living in the Underworld hidden from all with 2 friends A.J (demigod son of Poseidon dead for 4000 years) and the more recent Huntley (Human and died not too long ago).
To make a complicates story short, after a fight with Persephone, Chrys decided to go to earth and see exactly what her mother loves so much. I am not going to tell you more as you need to be reading the book instead of me feeding it to you. But I can tell you that it is good, just imagine a goddess that has never left the underworld, a guy who was alive the last time 4000 years ago and well the recently deceased boy from Philly.

Chrys has been locked away hidden from the world. She is a secret her father intends to keep. If anyone were to find out about her existence, there could be hell to pay, especially since her father is Hades, god of the underworld. But, the truth is that Chrys was never suppose to be born. Hades and Persephone were never supposed to be able to have children. Zeus made sure of it, and would destroy her if he were to ever discover her. So, Hades does the only thing he knows that will protect his beloved daughter - he keeps her secluded in the Palace of Hades with just a few souls for companionship.

This is the first in this series, so I hope that we are able to learn a bit more about how these characters operate and fit into Hoots’s world. I give Endangered a 3.5 star rating!

Endangered is a cute, funny book that readers will love.
It's about Hades' and Persephone's teenage (in goddess age, she's real been alive thousands of years) daughter Chrys and her best friend/tutor/crush Henley. Chrys has been hidden in the underworld with her father her whole life, and has always dreamed about seeing the world. When she is finally pushed to the limit, Chrys, Henley, and their demigod friend AJ sneak away to earth. They have a grand time, but there is always the threat of them being found out
Endangered is multiple POV which I absolutely love in any book. Unfortunately, this book is just chock-full of grammatical errors. Lots of sentences don't make sense and the words "worse" and "worst" are often mixed up. I do really like that Hades was portrayed as a good guy and that Zeus, usually a hero, was the antagonist. Also, him (Hades) being the supportive parent was very unexpected which was cool. It's not a great, epic read, but it's definitely a fun, fast read. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Perfect for an in-between read when you're waiting for a new book to be released or something like that.

Endangered is the first in the Daughter of Hades series and it’s a fantastic way to get introduced to a fun and energetic cast of characters who Hoots definitely has big plans for. My first impressions of this book were that it reminded me a little of the Disney movie Hercules, in a good way obviously!
Retelling traditional Greek myths for a modern teen audience isn’t a new idea but it’s done in an inspired way in this book. Chrys is a fantastic character, typical teen in many ways but of course, as the daughter of Hades she’s not exactly got a typical teen life. Like many her age Chrys just wants to see something different and in her case the place of her dreams is Earth.
Obviously the main sticking point is that whilst Chrys acts and presents like a teenager, she is a goddess who has been alive FOREVER so there were times where I had maybe expected her to be a bit more mature or have a bit more about herself. She’s a fun character though and a great protagonist to follow throughout the novel.
The plot is engaging throughout and I enjoyed the world Hoots’ created, especially the in depth descriptions and meanderings into different elements of a scene. I loved the mythology elements most within this novel and think Hoots cleverly brought it to life and interspersed it with the more modern elements of the novel.
I will be looking out for the next in the series!

I do not know if I should rate it 3or 4 ! I really liked this book! I loved the idea of Greek mythology and modern era, and the fact that there will be a fight between the gods is amazing! Chrys, the main character is the daughter of Hades . She is just as any other teen, and her friends too! I read this book with the help of NetGalley.I loved this book.Chrys is amazing.She lived all her eternity in the underworld.She loves her father.She goes with Huntley and AJ to the human world.She soon finds herself in trouble.She finds a way to save herself at a great cost.She faces the consequences of her actions instead of running away.This is an amazing book.I look forward to reading the next book.

I signed up for this tour because the premise seemed pretty cool, it's about Greek myth and I've never read a book centred around Hades. I'll be honest, the synopsis and book cover doesn't do the book justice, because I was initially hesitant to pick it up well in advance as it didn't seem really inviting. I finally went ahead because this tour was looming up on me. I'm really glad I signed up for this, though.
As soon as I read the first line, this was my reaction: "Aha!" It clicked with me, if that makes sense. After that, I read it in almost one sitting because it was that good.
Chrysanthemum "Chrys" is Hades's secret daughter who has never been outside of her father's ream since the time she was born (which was way way back). For companionship, she has taken Huntley, a dead human and AJ, a dead King who is also a son of Poseidon as friends. Huntley is supposedly her tutor and teaches her about human matters, but really, they just hang out. In this book, Persephone is a bitch, and Hades is a sweet guy. (Oh my gosh Hades, leave Persephone, marry me!) When Persephone is being her bitchy self again and Chrys gets hurt, again, she finally has had enough and wants to escape to Earth to see why Persephone loves Earth more than her daughter.
This leads to a major part of the book which is basically Huntley showing Chrys and AJ around Earth and being their tour guide. Chrys soaks up everything and likes Earth but in the end, she does feel homesick and misses her father. But! Complications complications because the problems rise up of which Hades was afraid of and kept her hidden from the start.
Now, I don't know much about Greek myth other than what I know from Rick Riordan books. I did see some similarities-the main one being almost everyone hating the gods. The story took a twist in the end and almost everything was unpredictable except the actions of one character (who I completely figured out a few chapters in).
Talking a bit about the characters: Chrys is this super-powerful goddess and a total teenager . I don't get that feeling that she has been alive for very long. She and Huntley have had a totally platonic relationship till now and it changes slowly. Huntley is also a normal teenager, who is dead, and he's a pretty likeable character.
But Hades, oh Hades. He's this sweeeeeet guy who loves his daughter and doesn't hold Persephone's hatred towards him against her. He tries to mend their relationship a lot and always thinks about his daughter's feelings and tolerates Huntley just because he makes Chrys happy. If I had to choose who to date between Huntley and Hades, I would say Hades without hesitation.
The writing is good, brings you that teenage spunk and mindset, easy to dive in. I found out one small mistake that should have been picked out while editing, but I got an ARC so I hope it'll be rectified out later.
Overall, a really good book, and I'm really glad that this portrays Hades as a good guy. The plot, the meaning, all the emotions were shown really well. The ending brought the high a bit down because I just didn't feel that oomph! I had running until then. Still, I really want to read the next book. Recommended to anyone who likes Rick Riordan books.

I love anything to do with Greek mythology so I was intrigued by this book about the daughter of Hades. Chrys is the secret daughter of Hades, who has been kept hidden all her life as she should never have been born. She decides to sneak out of the Underworld to find out exactly what it is that her mother, Persephone, loves so much about Earth and eventually we find out exactly why it is that she has been kept hidden for so long. I really enjoyed this and look forward to the second book in the series, however I did find quite a few errors in the text which need to be fixed as these really bother me when reading and I think would probably would bother most readers.

I recieved this ARC from netgalley for a honest review. It was entertaining and a fun read, but also felt like its for younger teens. It was predictable yet really good. I really enjoyed following Chrys and Huntleys little love adventure.

“Endangered” is the first book in the “Daughter of Hades” by Dani Hoots, a series that blends urban fantasy, Greek mythology and paranormal romance into a compelling, interesting story.
Chrys is the daughter of Hades and Persephone, who has been secreted away in the Underworld Palace for centuries without end, due to Hades fear of retaliation by the Olympian Gods, first and foremost Zeus from whom Chrys powers could signify an end to his own rule. But Chrys is lonely and bored, even the most glorious palace is not better than a jailcell after a couple of millennia, she longs to visit Earth, and thus when she finds Huntley, who he keeps as a tutor/pet looking for stories about the earthly realm and all its wonders, and then that faithful day comes, when one of the periodical visits of her mother ends on a big fight, and she decides that she have enough, she is going to the living realm, just for a couple of day, nobody will notice, right? Long story short… they do, and the Gods don’t take these kind of things lightly.
Dani Hoots constructs a very appealing Greek mythical world, populated by interesting denizens: Gods and Goddesses, Demigods, Titans, immortals, underworldly creatures. The story is a fast-read, easy to follow, with a good balance between world-building, story-arc, character development, action and romance.

I really enjoy reading books about Greek Mythology and I really love reading stories about Hades and Persephone. So when I read the summary for Endangered I knew I had to read it. I wanted to meet their daughter Chrys.
Chrys has lived in the Underworld with her father for many, many years. Chrys only gets to see her mother Persephone for like three months out of the year as the rest of the time her mother is on Earth.
Hades is trying to teach Chrys how to run the Underworld in case something happened to him. But of course, Chrys being your typical teenager gets bored real quick with his lessons. All she wants to do is to spend time with her friends Huntley and A.J.
Chrys is forbidden to leave the Underworld as it would be very dangerous for her if she did. Chrys has some very powerful magic and if one of the Gods ever found out that she existed then it could prove to be perilous for her. Like any teenager Chrys just wants more freedom to do what she wants. Chrys would very much like to visit Earth but is afraid of her father.
But after the fight, she has with her mom and then overhearing her mom and dad fight Chrys decides to disobey her father and go to Earth. A.J. has convinced her that it would be safe for a couple of days but Huntley is very afraid for Chrys but would never let anything happen to her if it is in his power to stop it of course.
I think Chrys wants to visit Earth mainly because her mother spends most of her time there. Chrys just wants to see for herself the place that her mother would rather be than with her own daughter.
Endangered was a very captivating and spellbinding story that had me from the first page to the last. The characters were all well developed and sounded like real teenagers do. The world-building was incredibly and superbly written. I can’t wait to see where Chrys and the rest of the crew take us in Engaged book two of the Daughter of Hades series.
I definitely recommend Endangered to all fans of Mythology, Greek Mythology, fantasy, and magic. Now it is time to one-click your copy of Endangered today for another great adventure to the Underworld!

Another fun read by Dani Hoots. The pacing is exceptional; the story moves right along. My biggest gripe is the first person point of view as I always struggle with it no matter how well the book is written. First person POV just feels very limiting to me, and sometimes makes the MC seem selfish. Hoots has a great knack for ending on a cliffhanger. Must read book two!

The First Five Words/Intro: “Hello and welcome to the Underworld. My name is Chrys, and I am the daughter of Hades. May I take your coat?” Sets the tone for the story but didn’t inspire much confidence. For a goddess who’s never set foot out of the Underworld she’s got a definitively modern style to her. If she’s been alive for so many thousands of years- and was personally mentored by Shakespeare himself- why does she only have contemporary references yet remain so clueless about things?
Style: The POV switches between Chrys and Huntley; an interesting tactic that allows you to see the story from different perspectives. The overall tone is pretty consistent yet uneven. Again, this is the centuries-old daughter of a god and a goddess in her own right, yet she’s only matured physically/emotionally to a high school level? I’d like to think there’s a reason for this, especially as every other godly being encountered is clearly an adult- aside from her own friends, conveniently- but we’re not given one.
Characters: Chrys is interesting enough but seems stuck in a permanent state of wangst. She can’t seem to make up her mind about much of anything other than being self-absorbed Ex: “My father was one of the most important people in my life, if the not the most important…” Really? You’re not sure? You know all of four people and you can’t tell where your own father ranks among them? Smooth. For a main character she doesn’t have much of an arc or growth through the story.
Huntley is an ok dude with some depth and develops more than Chrys does. He’s never much examined his circumstances and always treaded carefully, aware of how fragile his status is, but begins piecing things together and wondering about his place as a mortal amongst gods.
AJ or Agenor, has a potentially interesting backstory as how a son of Poseidon ended up in the Underworld, but we never learn it. This Agenor seems like he was based off the one from the Wrath of the Titans movie than actual mythology. You know he’s up to something; but what it is and why isn’t what you’d expect.
Story & Conflict: When we finally get to it, it’s a little disappointing. Without going into spoilers a lot of trouble could’ve been avoided if Hades had done what he should’ve all along and only offered to after everything hits the fan: train Chrys properly. The whole story centers around keeping Chrys under wraps and unknown to the rest of the gods, yet Hades never bothers to develop her powers even though he knows what she’s capable of and she’s constantly frightened of what could happen should she lose control. But no one ever teaches her.
Right when things were getting kinda interesting, the author pulls out the same old MarySue/Chosen One card: Chrys is the one from the prophecy with the power to destroy the gods, etc, blahblahblah.
I was ready to stop reading right there.
I don’t understand why *every* PNR/UF story- especially YA- want to go down this road. What’s the point? Where’s the struggle and conflict if the character is all-powerful right from the jump? Why can’t they just discover (not all of) their abilities, work around their limitations and face challenges with/against their peers? Ultimate beings are ultimately pretty damn dull and this doesn’t leave much room for improvement in the sequels: who can stand up to an all-powerful entity who’s fated to win? Why would anyone even try?
Proficiency: book needed proofreading. Simple as that.
Dialogue: Everyone speaks in a contemporary style, fitting enough for a modern day setting. But again, you’d think Chrys- and everyone else who resides in the Underworld- would have more formal & archaic speech patterns as they never leave it and have limited exposure to the world.
Narrative/Pacing: a pretty even keel for the most part. The bulk of the story is filled with the dynamics of the relationship between Chrys & Huntley and how they relate to everyone else. It’s not bad, just could’ve used more punch, or maybe a little something from Hades’ own POV.
Overall, there’s a story buried in here and has the potential to be a good one. It just needs to be treated as what it claims to be: a goddess who shouldn’t exist coming into her own to face those who want to destroy her, instead of a whiny teenaged girl whose tantrums could destroy the world and the father who never trained her not to. Because with the latter everyone else has a good point in wanting to stop her.

Huntley is an ok dude with some depth and develops more than Chrys does. He’s never much examined his circumstances and always treaded carefully, aware of how fragile his status is, but begins piecing things together and wondering about his place as a mortal amongst gods.
AJ or Agenor, has a potentially interesting backstory as how a son of Poseidon ended up in the Underworld, but we never learn it. This Agenor seems like he was based off the one from the Wrath of the Titans movie than actual mythology. You know he’s up to something; but what it is and why isn’t what you’d expect.
Story & Conflict: When we finally get to it, it’s a little disappointing. Without going into spoilers a lot of trouble could’ve been avoided if Hades had done what he should’ve all along and only offered to after everything hits the fan: train Chrys properly. The whole story centers around keeping Chrys under wraps and unknown to the rest of the gods, yet Hades never bothers to develop her powers even though he knows what she’s capable of and she’s constantly frightened of what could happen should she lose control. But no one ever teaches her.
Right when things were getting kinda interesting, the author pulls out the same old MarySue/Chosen One card: Chrys is the one from the prophecy with the power to destroy the gods, etc, blahblahblah.
I was ready to stop reading right there.
I don’t understand why *every* PNR/UF story- especially YA- want to go down this road. What’s the point? Where’s the struggle and conflict if the character is all-powerful right from the jump? Why can’t they just discover (not all of) their abilities, work around their limitations and face challenges with/against their peers? Ultimate beings are ultimately pretty damn dull and this doesn’t leave much room for improvement in the sequels: who can stand up to an all-powerful entity who’s fated to win? Why would anyone even try?
Proficiency: book needed proofreading. Simple as that.
Dialogue: Everyone speaks in a contemporary style, fitting enough for a modern day setting. But again, you’d think Chrys- and everyone else who resides in the Underworld- would have more formal & archaic speech patterns as they never leave it and have limited exposure to the world.
Narrative/Pacing: a pretty even keel for the most part. The bulk of the story is filled with the dynamics of the relationship between Chrys & Huntley and how they relate to everyone else. It’s not bad, just could’ve used more punch, or maybe a little something from Hades’ own POV.
Overall, there’s a story buried in here and has the potential to be a good one. It just needs to be treated as what it claims to be: a goddess who shouldn’t exist coming into her own to face those who want to destroy her, instead of a whiny teenaged girl whose tantrums could destroy the world and the father who never trained her not to. Because with the latter everyone else has a good point in wanting to stop her.
Typical fare for the YA genre.
