Most Christians believe in God’s power, yet few see evidence of the supernatural in their lives. Mike Pilavachi and Andy Croft believe that God wants each of his followers to know the work of the Holy Spirit. In Everyday Supernatural, they Everyday Supernatural is an engaging, biblically based invitation to make supernatural power a part of everyday life.
As you would expect from two of the main components of Soul Survivor this is a light hearted but not lightweight book about living a spiritual life. It would especially appeal to late teens/early 20s but can and should be read by all who want a deeper walk with Jesus. I was given this book by NetGalley and the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
We read this book as a small group study in the last 3 months. It was very encouraging to read the honest stories from Mike and Andy, written in very humorous and engaging ways. The book is very readable and the fact that it included examples of what one would think as 'failure' it made the 'supernatural' more accessible. As a group we discussed the questions which were very helpful, and the guide for ministry time was also productive for a session where we practiced prophecy.
One observation is that the language used is colloqial, which might be difficult for readers who do not have English as their first language as there were expressions and sayings which are not so easy to explain.
Nevertheless a very helpful book for a small group to grow in being Spirit-lead and more open to God's working supernaturally in the everyday.
Awesome book about living a supernatural life, everyday. It focuses on subjects such as prophecy, healing and power evangelism. It is biblically based, practical, and full of hilarious quotes and anecdotes, including stories of the authors own failures, which were humbling to read. Reading this book I felt reenergised in my faith and ready to step out and do big things for God. I would reccomended this book to anyone, no matter how many times they've been round the block! Don't be put off because it's written by the soul survivor guys, even older Christians have a lot to gain from this book,
Good and solid but not mind blowing. Encouraging nonetheless. Would be a great intro to this stuff. My 16-20 year old self would have found this very helpful.
I was drawn to this novel by not only it’s eye catching cover but it’s title and sub-title. How can you not be intrigued by a subtitle of a book called Living a spirit led life without being weird?!
I have had this book on my ever increasing to be read pile for the last six months, but following our churches recent 3 week teaching on The Holy Spirit, I felt led to give this book a try. I was definitely not disappointed.
From the first chapter I pulled in by the down to earth nature and writing style of Mike & Andy, they are two very likeable guys, the type that I could imagine sitting down for a chat with over some good food. The subject of The Holy Spirit, while important is an incredibly difficult subject to speak on, as there is just so much to cover and let’s be honest here we probably would never figure it all out if we read a thousand books. But what Mike and Andy have done is created a very every day explanation of the supernatural, the book does exactly what is says on the tin.
Subjects that have been a puzzle for me since I became a Christian became clearer through reading this book, especially the section on healing. This is something that I can be honest in saying I have struggled with during my Christian journey and I know I am probably not alone. Yet the way it is taught in this novel opened my eyes to some new ways of viewing prayers for healing. I know the next time I see someone suffering I will feel a lot more confident to step out and see if they are willing and open to receive prayer.
The honesty relating to struggle and failure within this book gave me a lot of confidence, and I have to admit it feels much better to know that even amazing leaders like Mike and Andy have overcome failures in their Christian walk. It makes me think if they failed a few times before they had success then I can get over a failure or two as well. There are a few Christian leaders out there who would like us to think they had never failed, which personally I don’t think is helpful to anyone they are leading, it only succeeds in making others feel inadequate.
Another thing I loved about this book is that it was so full of heart and humour, no-one would think a book about The Holy Spirit could bring you laughter but these two managed it. Through their real life experiences they brought many smiles, and they also showed their complete hearts for God’s work.
This is a great read, whether you’re new to faith, exploring your beliefs or just wanting to reach a little further into the Spirit Led life. It’s not always the big things, you don’t have to step out into something huge and terrifying, it’s about the every day, those little things you can do for someone to make them feel valued, or help them out, even just to offer a word of encouragement when you sense things are tough. Be faithful in the little things of life, and you will be amazed at what comes next.
It showed me some of the areas of my life where I can definitely start reaching out for more of the Spirit, and whether I see instant fruit or I am just the sower planting the seed for future fruit it’s always worth it.
Thank you to Mike and Andy for inspiring me to lead a more Spirit led life, and for writing the book that was my inspiration for my first night of leading our student group at church. We had some fantastic conversations off the back of what I learnt through reading this and what I felt God speaking to me about.
As a born-and-raised presbyterian, I was naturally a little skeptical about the premise of this book - that God (especially the Holy Spirit) acts in the world and in the lives of believers in all manner of ways that most normal (dare I use that word?) people would describe as, well, a little "weird". This premise goes hand-in-hand with a specific theology of inspiration and a particular way of understanding what the so-called "Gifts of the Spirit" are (especially healing/prophecy/tongues), how they manifest, and also how to acquire or use them.
I think Mike and Andy do a decent job of making the case that the Holy Spirit DOES do amazing things, and that he can reveal hidden and highly specific knowledge to people who ask for it, or who are willing to receive it from him. I also think there are some compelling instances of physical and emotional healing described in the book. The personal narratives are strong points, and they are well balanced with some serious theological reflection on the "why", e.g., an extended case is made in the first chapter that what we ought to seek first as believers is not power from God per se, but rather, his presence (from which power will always flow). I think this has real merit.
I did not find the discussion of the gift of tongues very convincing. That said, the book did challenge my over-all perspective on the prevalence of God's "unusual" activity in the world. Perhaps the Spirit giving some a word to speak, or a vision to see, or a true physical healing, is not or should not seem unusual at all.
This is a great introductory book for learning about walking into an increasingly supernatural lifestyle with Jesus at your side. You'll learn foundational principles for some of the charismatic gifts, but the premise of this book is consistently Christ and a relationship with him. The two authors poke gentle fun at each other throughout, easing you into the truth that 'supernatural' people are only ever normal, sometimes fearful, often foolish, folks, who are empowered by and partner with the Holy Spirit to glorify God and demonstrate love to his creation. Scripture and insightful explanations, coupled with the authors' own stories of successes and failures, will hopefully leave you inspired to try and trust God for more 'Kingdom come' in your everyday.
a beautiful book written by two dudes who i now feel like i know quite well. although it is no replacement for the living Word of God (and they don't claim it is!), Everyday Supernatural: Living a Spirit-Led Life without Being Weird is a great tool to grow in general as a Christian. i bet i've written this on every review of a Christian book i've read, but i truly believe this can help anyone in their faith journey, although it is more directly intended for those newer to the faith. you are loved by the one true king!
As it says on the can, or in the title in this case
I've read a number of books on the supernatural in the Christian life, but I don't think I have read any as down to earth and practical as Everyday Supernatural. The authors are honest and vulnerable about their own, at times, faltering experience, and yet how time and again God has been there and used them. Great teaching earthed in the real. Read it and you'll be encouraged and inspired that yes, God can work supernaturally through you!
Absolutely brilliant and written in such a simplistic and relatable way. I’ve really enjoyed going over this book with my home group and I feel that it has really deepened my understanding of how to have a relationship with God. It is best not to rush this book and devour it in one sitting... it has more of an impact to stretch it out and really look into each chapter. It’s really good that it has questions for each chapter to prompt discussion and to deepen your understanding and relationship with God and it also helps to practise in your daily life.
So many of the stories were not new to me as I've been to many Soul Survivors and Momentums over the years and yet I loved the book. It's acessible, amusing, biblical, humble, Jesus focused and honest. I thoroughly recommend this to anyone seeking to do the stuff Jesus did.
I will definitely be encouraging a number of people to get this.
A really useful and biblical book about the charismatic gifts and how to exercise them well. It’s also very funny (in a good way) so much so that I literally laughed out loud, even if I was in a busy pub. Since starting the book, I’ve definitely become more aware of the Holy Spirit’s prompting in every day life and feel more confident to pray boldly for others, expecting to be used by God and for Him to answer.
This book is good, nothing particularly ground-breaking but it is a good foundation for understanding the Christian life in the supernatural. Much of the book is written in an entry level style and thus the nuance and depth of the supernatural life is often lacking. But generally it was a good read though I imagine it would be better if the reader knew the authors somewhat as it is written in quite a conversational way.
An enjoyable read with worthwhile challenges to live naturally supernatural lives empowered by the Spirit. Gives a good British take on discipleship from a couple of guys most known for youth work. I found the book a good in between of Sam Storms practicing the power and Jared Wilson’s Supernatural.
This sounds weird from the title, and I appreciated how up front the authors were about this, and the fact that it is outside most peoples’ boxes. A few of us from my church read through it together and it was interesting to explore some of the more unusual spiritual things that people experience and talk about.
Great book, easy read insight into the Holy Spirit and Christianity without too much biblical references. Andy and Mike's commentary throughout made it thoroughly enjoyable and at times very funny. The testimonials were incredible and the small group questions at the end provided some thought and exercises between Chapters.
A helpful look at 'doing the stuff' that God calls us all to do. Mike and Andy's personal writing style makes this book accessible to all, with their stories and anecdotes adding a nice flourish to the theology and discussion. The small group study guide at the book helped to bring this book to life, adding some good questions and challenges to take forward into each week.
I have been deeply blessed by Mike and Andy’s teaching on the gifts of the spirit. This book is a very useful and pastoral guide to help all of us to walk daily in the gifts of the spirit...without being weird.
Down to earth introduction to supernatural work of God
The book was very helpful, funny and practical introduction to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how to minister with prayer to help people meet with God.
Great read. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to know about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It's also quite a welcoming book, not too theologically heavy, but also comedic at times. This is the second time I've read it and it always seems to encourage me.
Likes - really practically based and very easy to follow and so encouraging. It made me feel so valued and adequate enough (in God’s power) to step out and live for Him and trust Him to work through me more. Dislikes - it was a fairly easy ready which isn’t much of a dislike but I like to be challenged or get a lot out of what I read and although this book had so much to say and to think about it was already confirming what I felt and know so felt more of an exploration into what I already know about the Holy Spirit - which definitely isn’t a bad thing!
There are so many truths in this book which, while I might know, are a welcome reminder and incentivizes me to step into the supernatural even more than I currently am.
Lots of insight. One chapter didn’t quite line up with my beliefs, but the rest of the book was so packed full of good nuggets, I’m willing to overlook it!
