The second volume collecting the Ava's Demon webcomic. It continues the adventures of Ava Ire and the demon Wrathia trapped inside her.
Book Two, also referred to as Volume Two, is the second volume of Ava's Demon and contains the second 604 panels of the webcomic, from Chapter Seven to Chapter Twelve. Throughout the book, there is one animation called "Maggie's Garden."
Ava's Demon ticks all my boxes, Lordy. Paranormal, queer representation, beautiful art, compelling story, characters with depth and dimension, and all available for free on the net. This story's so good I want to throw all my money at the author-artist anyway. Living for updates now!
this hardcover Kickstarter edition is SUCH a freaking GORGEOUS book. The art and story are really interesting and engaging. I absolutely want to know more about Odin as what we have so far is fascinating. I love when reading comics inspires you to create fanart.
Book two of Ava's Demon had some of my favorite artwork. While the plotline progressed a bit slowly, the art and exploration aspect was worth every moment building up towards the third book.
Read through this book in one go. In this volume, the world in this universe expands and so does the characters. There are both added some new ones, that I'm looking forward to getting to know better, and then the characters we had already been intruduced to in the first book, are much more explored in this one, including the relationships they form with each other.
The art is amazing, and I love this book in particular, because there are so many more colours in this volume. Looking forward to the next book!
How is the story getting so good, how is it so enthralling, I literally cannot put this down. The second book has everything the first did PLUS the amazing plot development. UNREAL.
I liked this book almost as much as the first one, but there is not a lot of significant plot development that didn’t already occur or at least get suggested in the first book.
The art, of course, was absolutely stunning.
I did find a typo—“bare” instead of “bear” on page 69.
Nevy is still soooo gorgeous.
I was really hoping to see Wrathia and Pedri’s reunion, but instead was just tantalized with the possibility of it.
I’m still very excited for the following books in the series!
[Logging this book to account for everything up to the most updated chapter, as of February 5, 2024.]
Oh no, I got tricked again by a long-form comic!
First of all, somehow, the art got even more incredible. The unique character designs, the distinct style, the texture, the fun expressions, the fantastic use of colour and light... All I want is a tutorial from Fus and her colourists so I can one day hope to achieve even a fraction of this beauty.
But, well. Look, I don't consider myself a webcomic pro, but I have been reading a lot lately, and I swear once they breach a certain amount of chapters, they all have this slump section where not enough happens for way too many pages. Unfortunately, in Ava's Demon's case, because of the amount of hiatuses over the twelve years it's been in production, this slump--consisting of what felt like 2 drawn-out, repetitive conversations and a smattering of random side stories with no plot progression--eats up a huge amount of its runtime.
Don't get me wrong. Within this section was a ton of beautiful moments, with character backstories, hints at more little bits of magic and worldbuilding (what's going on when Ava takes out the magic drawer in her chest? How else has Titan brainwashed and controlled its people and the planets? What do the other warriors look like? HOW CUTE IS BABY ODIN?), but when I hit the latest update, I was like...that's it? I read like 1000+ panels just waiting for these kids to stop talking and go to bed? AND IT'S BEEN TWELVE YEARS?!
Serious bummer, because I know I had a place for Ava's Demon in my heart. I still feel all my inspiration gears turning like crazy thanks to this premise and world. Farewell, weird little infinite story.
6/3/2024 4.5 stars. Super loved this, but would love it even more if publishers would stop shifting around their pub dates w/o notice so much, graah. Full review tk at TheFrumiousConsortium.net.
6/21/2024 I adored the first volume of the Ava's Demon series, and am even more impressed by this follow-up effort! My biggest complaint about the first volume is slightly alleviated here, too, as this cover is definitely less awkward than Volume One's.
After the catastrophic events that capped Book One: Reborn, Ava finds herself battling Wrathia for control of a body that barely has enough energy to stay conscious. Odin collects her unconscious form and manages to make it onto the transport that Gil and Maggie, coincidentally, are using to flee the devastated space station. Maggie, ofc, is less than thrilled to be stuck on yet another spacefaring vessel with Odin and Ava, even before Odin explodes her lies to Gil. As the quartet try to figure out what to do next, they slowly learn more about each other and how to become more vulnerable and honest with one another... well, some of them do, anyway.
Meanwhile, Odin's (adorable) sisters Crow and Raven are reporting back on their errant brother, as we learn far more about their family's messed up dynamic as well as their fascinating background. Elsewhere, Strategos Six has been tasked with a mission from Titan following the destruction Wrathia caused, and has promoted a soldier to the position of Taxiarch Five.
Compared to the first book, not a whole lot of action happens here, but I genuinely didn't even notice as I frantically turned the 300+ pages of this volume, lapping up both story and the gorgeous, gorgeous art. To the story first: these chapters were entirely necessary for the development of our characters' interior lives, as well as the exposition into their demons' (and even their own) pasts. I am dying to know what happened between Gil and Odin, and thought the bit with the storybook an incredibly clever if infuriating subversion. I was definitely a little confused by the epilogue, but have enough faith in Michelle Fus' storytelling to believe that my questions will be answered in Book Three, which I can hardly wait for.
And now let's talk about this AMAZING art. I loved what the author did with the first book, but they've gone way beyond even the glories of that volume with Aftermath. The switch between styles to suit different planets, the use of color and light, the seamless transitions between beauty and horror and cuteness and sorrow... Mx Fus is one of the most talented comic book artists working today, bar none. These two plus books have taken over a decade to produce but honestly, you can see why. I'm just so glad Skybound/Image has decided to put these into print so I can binge the pages all at once without getting lost on a webpage, as these were originally presented.
Ava's Demon, Book Two: Aftermath by Michelle Fus was published June 11 2024 by Image Comics and is available from all good booksellers, including Bookshop!
So some backstory: this was originally a web comic (which is still ongoing) I stumbled across in high school and have sporadically read over the years as it's been updated. I've read the first 10 or so chapters at least 3 times as I've had to go back and remind myself what the story is (which I've never minded; the art is absolutely beautiful). Michelle I guess now has a deal to release them as traditional graphic novels, so I bought this one last year when it came out and read it! I needed something short and quick after Wind and Truth omg.
So I checked on her web comic page and this graphic novel is nearly caught up to where she is in the webcomic so I guess we will not get another one for a HOT SEC which is a bummer, but just looking at the art I can tell how time consuming it must be so it's okay. I definitely got past the point that I'd read before, but I also forgot a lot lol.
I can't say it's my *favorite* thing ever, but the art is soooo good and unique and so is the story--the characters kindaaa annoy me at points and the story can get a little confusing, but I can see there's a lot going on and I'm so curious to see what is going to happen. I have no idea how much more story there is but I'm along for the ride! I genuinely think these are worth picking up for the art style alone but I am also invested in what's going on for sure. I will continue to purchase these as they come out!
And here we have a typical case of webcomic curse! What a huge disappointment!!
Jeez, 350 pages of people trapped in a spaceship talking and telling stuff that happened before. Useful to understand the story altogether but boring because nothing freaking happens.
What's the curse, then? Well, we have authors who think they have unlimited pages to tell their story with no constraints. And so they keep adding details and little stories and more panels. But you need constraints. A novel, an article, a comic book... they are all work of subtraction. Meaning that the first draft it's always longer than the finished product: you then have to be brave and take away unneccessary things. But here, what's the point of omitting stuff when you virutally have no limits?!
There are also a couple of flashbacks that don't make any sense. And some dreamlike sequences that left me baffled.
But this ist also a feast for the eye! From an aesthetic point of view, this graphic novel is magnificent. Hence the second star. And that's the reason why I'll back the third volume as well. I'm also a tiny bit curious about the story, to be entirely honest.
God, did Michelle step up her game between chapters 16 and 17 of this.
I'll never forget the amount of fangirling I did over this section of the comic as it came out. Getting to see the main 4 characters and their demons all interact the way they do in this book is so gratifying after such a long time leading up to it.
In specific, it's wonderful to see Ava and Odin connecting after most of the characters are, in some way, so hostile to one another for so much of the story. Their blossoming friendship is so sweet to see, makes me love them as characters even more than before, if possible.
And god, the art. Every detail, every texture, every facial expression is just...absolute chef's kiss. Everything looks so soft yet so sharp in detail, and the characters' faces are more consistent, more defined.
This is just contains so much improvement, so much growth. I only wish it had a more interesting action set piece after Book 1's explosive ending, but that's just me nitpicking. The overall quality of this book's contents just blow Book 1's out of the water. I can't wait to get all caught up again to see more!
This volume picks up where the previous one ended in the tale of Ava Ire and the demon Wrathia that is trapped within her. The story has expended to cover the background of the other three teens that have become her companions as they are confronted the intersection of a possibly corrupt corporation that is controlling many of the planets in their galaxy and the rise of a group of demons like Wrathia that seem set on returning to their own power.
The artwork in this series is pretty amazing. The backgrounds of the primary characters and how they all intersect is different. There definitely is a shift that has made the characters feel a lot more teenish than in the earlier volume. They are a bit caught up in teen dramatics while the primary story takes a back seat.
So I apparently made it all the way through book two when I was first reading this comic. I really didn't know I made it that far. As for the series, I think the characters are interesting for the most part. Maggie isn't my favourite type of character, but she has potential. I really feel for Ava, and hope that things end up going more her way as the series goes on. Odin is very reletable to me today, I'm also really tired of everything. As for Gil, I think Fus really got the cult mindset right with him, and it's going to be interesting to see how he navigates that.
This had a lot more of the comic than I was expecting! The profiles at the end were very great too, eagerly awaiting a book three! (Also: I shelved this as 'lgbt' because the majority of the characters are even though the only one thing that gets touched on in the book is
I was confused how the hardcover copy of this book looked this thicker than volume one, but then I saw that the panels in this volume are waaay larger than the previous book and therefore take up more space lmaoooooo. It’s good cause it looks better this way, being able to see the details and all, but also hilarious because they had to find a way to pad this volume out seeing as though the story has moved an inch lololol.
It’s cute. It reminded me of Lore Olympus with the colored saying bubbles and the characters themselves.
After finishing it, it’s almost similar to Percy Jackson and Naruto. Gods and goddesses are mentioned along with spiritual vessels. Think Gods and Goddesses from Percy Jackson and Kyuubi and others from Naruto. In that framework, Ava’s Demon Book 2: Aftermath is like a crossover between Percy Jackson, Naruto, and Naruto Shippuden.
This had pretty artwork. However, the story read like a drunk person was tasked with telling a SFF story to small children, and not in a Drunk History fun sort of way. More like a person laying next to a toilet and spewing nonsense between barfs, kind of way. What a waste of time. Pretty drawings tho.
This is the second volume of Ava's Demon and it was even better than the first! This one finds Ava and "friends" continuing their journey to find the different warriors in order to eventually take the battle to Titan. I love the art and the feeling of this webcomic and think Michelle does a wonderful job with it. Can't wait for book 3!
It only takes about an hour to read this, but it's so epic and so so worth it. I already love the worldbuilding and the story and all the characters and I only just heard about this webcomic yesterday.
The newly published version is absolutely stunning. The artwork and world building are beautiful. The mysteries are so intriguing and I can’t wait for them to be further unveiled! I am eager for the next book in this beautiful series, whenever it may be published
Our main characters are trapped on a cargo ship for the length of this. Time for 300 pages of exposition dumps. Some of it was fine. Some of it dragged like you wouldn't believe. The art is still really good though and I wasn't turned away enough to not read a third volume.
I love this series, can't wait for the 3rd one. I had read the whole first volume online before but I've never read this, and it was awesome. Love the character progression, love the tension building with possible relationship crossovers.
This webcomic is such a great blend of genres. Beautiful worldbuilding even when expository. Be a patron for the artist here: https://www.patreon.com/avasdemon/ove...
La suite du premier tome tant apprécié, malgré l'épaisseur du volume, on ne s'ennuie pas en lisant Ava's demon, il y a toujours un rebondissement étonnant ou amusant à la prochaine page.
