In one short day Lily Beckett's life falls apart when she loses her dream job in fashion and finds out her boyfriend is having an affair. Totally devastated, she ends the relationship and flees the city.
Lily heads to the country town she grew up in to seek sanctuary with her big sister, Violet, and niece, Holly. But bad luck hits her yet again when she crashes her car on the way. Fortunately a local grazier, Flynn Hartley, arrives on the scene to find her dazed but uninjured.
Gradually Lily's life picks up and she decides to stay put for a while, helping out her sister and renovating the beautiful old shop she inherited but has never had time to focus on. Meanwhile, Flynn showers her with attention, but Lily is aware of his bad-boy ways and isn't willing to risk heartbreak by becoming his next conquest. And yet, he won't give up and insists he's turned over a new leaf.
From bestselling author Nicole Hurley-Moore, Hartley's Grange is an inspirational story about a woman putting her life back together, pursuing her dreams and taking charge of her future.
After suddenly quitting her job and then finding her photographer boyfriend entangled with one of his models Lily decides the only thing she can do is head home to Violet Falls and spend some quality time with her sister and niece. But Lily’s nightmare isn’t over yet as on her way home she crashes her car on an outback road. Fortunately local heartbreaker Flynn Hartley finds her and deposits her safely at her sister’s. Lily’s life is a mess and love is the last thing on her mind but Flynn Hartley seems to keep running into her everywhere she goes.
Flynn and Lily are two emotionally broken people but the parallels in their lives help them understand each others fears. When Flynn finally opens up to Lily even I got a little teary.
Hurley-Moore conveys natural banter with ease. Conversations between men, sisters and friends all had a natural authentic feel.
I think Hartley’s Grange would have to be the most natural, easy-going book I’ve read in a long time. Here I am in Violet Falls with all my friends. Real people with real hopes and real fears, not over dramatised, just the same hopes and fears that we all have.
Hurley-Moore writes both love scenes and nightmare scenes with depth and feeling. There was a perfect balance of romance and mystery without one overpowering the story.
The whole story has a wonderful country feel with the community banding together to support each other.
Hartley's Grange is the second novel featuring the residents of Violet Falls and I can’t believe I haven’t read a Nicole Hurley-Moore novel before! I’m off to find McKellan's Run and immerse myself in Violet Falls again.
A perfect rural romance with a touch of spice. I am certain the residents of Violet Falls are going to be a favourite with all rural romance readers.
With my thanks to Allen and Unwin for my copy to read and review.
Lily Beckett’s arrival in her home town of Violet Falls wasn’t as smooth as she had anticipated – the horror day had continued when her car unexpectedly spun out of control in the storm she was driving through. Fortunately for Lily she wasn’t badly hurt and the arrival of farmer (and schoolgirl crush) Flynn Hartley meant she was able to continue on to her sister, Violet’s house.
Lily’s life had spun out of control and she had no idea what to do to put it right again. Her big sister had always looked out for her, so Lily’s decision to flee from Melbourne was a sensible one. Her niece Holly was a delight; the three of them in their grandparent’s old home was a comfort to Lily. Gradually Lily found a quiet peace in Violet Falls – she decided to renovate the old shop which had been left to her by her grandfather and turn it into her own business. But suddenly Lily was hit with unexpected problems – what on earth was happening?
When Flynn continued to bump into Lily around town, he realised this woman from his childhood had settled into his heart. But he had deep-seated issues from his past – there was no way he could commit to a long term relationship; he was sure it would be no different with Lily…
Hartley’s Grange by Aussie author Nicole Hurley-Moore was a quick, easy read which was set in a fictional town not far from Bendigo in Victoria. The heat of the summer months with the threat of bushfire always in the minds of the locals is incredibly real – Australia in the grip of summer is notorious for that. Although I was a little disappointed to not “see” more of Holly I enjoyed the novel overall. Highly recommended to lovers of rural romance.
With thanks to Allen & Unwin for this copy to read in exchange for my honest review.
After many years Lily is returning to Violet Falls after being betrayed by her boyfriend and in an unrelated incident, her workmate. Home to where her sister Violet and niece Holly live but on the drive there, she nearly hits a kangaroo and crashes the car. Luckily for her she's not hurt badly and she's rescued by Flynn Hartley, the boy she had a secret crush on many years ago. After being at a loose end she decides to do up the old, derelict shop her Grandfather left her as she has dreams to establish a business to design and sell her own exclusive dresses.
I enjoyed engaging with Violet and Holly again as they featured in the authors previous novel, McKellan's Run. This is a typical Australian Rural Romance, we all know there is going to be a HEA but it's the journey there that we partake in. This was a quick easy read with a little bit of suspense/mystery, I enjoyed all the characters although I sometimes find this genre a bit formulaic, that's not a bad thing because I still keep coming back to them.
Thank you to Goodreads and the publisher for my copy I won in a giveaway.
Hartley's Grange is a story about young girl Lily Beckett whose dreams was to be a fashion designer in the City and a young man Flynn who believes that no one will love him. However, this was not the case, and the readers of Hartley's Grange will follow Lily and Flynn to see what happens to them in Violet Falls.
I enjoyed reading Hartley's Grange it allowed me to complete the story of what happens to the two Beckett sisters. I meet the two sisters Violet and Lily Beckett reading McKellan's Run which was the first book I had read of Nicole Hurley-Moore. I like the way Nicole Hurley-Moore portrays her characters. I love the way Nicole Hurley-Moore describes country life which makes her readers feel they are part of the story.
Readers of Hartley's Grange will learn about how rural communities help each other during crises. Also, readers of Hartley's Grange will see how cut throat fashion industry is and the consequences for the people involved. Hartley's Grange highlights that family violence does not only affect young girls, but it also has implications for young boys too.
This was a pleasant and easy to read novel, however it left me feeling unsatisfied. I felt it was lacking in substance - not enough character and relationship development.
Lily Beckett is a talented junior designer in Melbourne for an up and coming fashion house, until she is put in a position that leaves her feeling like she has no choice but to quit. Devastated she heads over to see her photographer boyfriend, only to find him in a compromising position. With her life in tatters she flees the city for the country town she grew up in.
On the way she runs into a huge storm and then crashes her car avoiding a kangaroo. It really is not Lily’s day but she is found by local grazier Flynn Hartley, who Lily knows from her childhood.
Violet Falls is a small town and the Beckett’s have been there from the beginning, Lily is running back there to be with her older sister Violet and her niece Holly. She decides to check out the main street shop she inherited while she’s in town.
Lily has always had issues with her body and her self-esteem, and she has always been unlucky in love. This latest farce with the photographer sees her swear off men, or the bad boys at least. The next man she decides to date will be dependable, reliable and probably a little bit boring. But she didn’t count on the sparks with resident bad boy Flynn.
Violet has a wedding coming up and her event planning business is taking off so while hiding from the world Lily decides to stick around for a while and help out. The sisters are extremely close and it has been difficult for Lily to have been separated from Violet and Holly when they moved back to town.
Growing up Lily never really felt she belonged in town but that seems to have changed in all the years she was gone. Now that she’s home things are coming together for her, she is back with the friends that she left behind when she fled to the city with her sister almost a decade ago and she has her work cut out for her with the shop.
Hartley’s Grange is told by both Lily and Flynn, so we get an in-depth glimpse into the workings of Flynn’s mind also. He is carrying quite a bit of baggage from the past and it’s why he has never been a big fan of commitment.
This is the story of Lily’s return home and courageous chasing of her dreams. It is a well written story with a couple of interesting twists that I wasn’t expecting, as well as some predictable plotlines. I want to say it was a nice light read but the baggage both our leads are carrying adds quite a bit of depth.
When you walked into Kmart and stumble around looking for a book to read, and they only have a small selection to choose from and all of them are old or romance novellas, but you are craving a new book and just take what you can. Well this was one of those books. And even though I am a fan of romance books, I am glad that this one was better than I thought it would be. When down on her luck Lily stumbles in on her boyfriend making out with one of his clients, Lily grabs her stuff and does a runner. She heads to the town where she grew up and where her older sister Violet lives. After a not so smooth entrance to the town, Lily finally makes it home and to her loving family. Stuck grieving for her ex-boyfriend and the amazing job she gave up, Lily doesn’t know what to do with herself. But soon a lightbulb turns on and Lily doesn’t have enough hours in the day to make her dreams come true. A shop, that has been in the family for generations is now Lily’s and with her heart and mind made up, Lily makes herself a home and place of work to love every day, as well as find herself a new companion too. “On the fourth day, Lily decided that she needed to get the tatters of her life together again and work out what the hell she was going to do. Lily was unemployed, homeless, single – a triple threat in the negative.” Page 35. This down to earth, romantic, fiction novel is going to make your heart swell. Set within Australia, with a picturesque backdrop of rural farm towns as its setting, Hartley’s Grange is about more than finding romance, the story is about finding a home and people who love you for who you are, and finding out who you really are and what you want to do with your life. I like the simplicity of this book, yes, it’s a cliché of a girl in distress fleeing back home and falling for the town bad boy. I mean who doesn’t love a cliché every once and a while. But this book is a little bit more than that. It is also about family and growing up with people who don’t love you and the consequences of abandonment issues and commitment issues. The story is also about revenge and unrequited love, and tragic Australian bushfires. Filled with a romantic notion and a little bit heartbreak Hartley’s Grange is filled with everything you would want in a book to take away with you on a holiday or even to binge read on a Saturday night. You will get through it immediately with much appreciation. The writing is great, and will make you feel like you are part of the story and will make you want to a life like Lily’s, maybe without all the disasters. If you are looking for a feel-good book that will make you feel good on the inside, then go out and grab this book. Its more than your ordinary chick lit book.
Sometimes the place you ran away from is the where you find your heart and home…
After finding one of her colleagues taking credit for her fashion designs and then finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman, Lily Beckett packs up her Melbourne life and fleas back to her hometown of Violet Falls and her sister Violet. And as if her day couldn’t get any worse, she has a run-in with a kangaroo when she’s almost at her destination. Luckily for her, Flynn Hartley is her knight in shining armour, helping her get to her sister’s house and organising for her car to be repaired. Lily has always had a bit of a crush on Flynn, but he’s sort of always seen her as Violet’s baby sister. Not to mention, he’s a bit of a player and avoids commitment at all costs. As Lily begins to find her feet again in Violet Falls and starts working on a plan to renovate the old shop she inherited from her grandfather, Flynn isn’t far from her thoughts or view. There’s undeniable chemistry between the pair, but both have baggage they need to deal with if there’s any chance of them having a future together.
Rural romance is always such a comfy and familiar read for me, and this book was no different - as someone who grew up and continues to live in a small regional community, I just love getting to experience that in book form. The cast of characters in Violet Falls are all so familiar, even though I’ve never read about them before, simply because I know of people in real life who are very similar. Nicole has perfectly captured the personalities of small-town Aussies so effortlessly, and even the setting of Violet Falls seems so real even though it’s a fictional town (although I wish it wasn’t because I need to visit it!).
Lily and Flynn’s individual stories were really interesting to follow as they both had their own dreams that they were endeavoring to pursue, while also dealing with previous heartbreak and struggles that they had to overcome. And on the romance front, their relationship was super sweet and fun as it developed over the course of the book. The timeline that Nicole established in the book helped it not feel like an insta-romance, and that their road to a relationship developed over a more natural period of time.
I’m a little annoyed at myself that I didn’t realise this was technically the second book in a companion novel duology, with the first book McKellan’s Run following Lily’s sister Violet - I’m definitely someone who prefers to read companion novels in order to fully enjoy the timeline, but it’s obviously not the end of the world. If anything, having seen Violet’s happily ever after throughout this book, it has me even more excited to go back and experience the origins of her story. I also just really enjoyed Nicole’s writing style, so I definitely need to check out the rest of her books!
If you’re looking to escape to the Aussie countryside and get swept up in rural drama and romance, this is definitely a book you need to add to your TBR!
Lily moves back home after another designer steals her design and dress which she then passes off as her own to the fashion designer they both work for. Moving home to the house and shop she and her sister have been left in the grandparents will,Lilly decides to set up her own design business. All is going well, she has 2 men interested in her, Jonno the builder and Flynn a local sheep farmer who is haunted by his grandmother and her cruelty to him as a boy. Things are going well until there is a spate of vandalism aimed at the shop, Lily is the victim of a hit and run, then the shop is set on fire just as Lily has been offered the chance of working with the fashion house she was originally with. Decisions decisions..... should she stay or should she go.... read the book and find out.
Flynn has trouble committing to relationships, leaves them before they leave him. Lily moves back to her childhood home after quitting her job, and catching her man in the arms of another lady.
Flynn rescues Lily from a minor car crash on the same day... Lily is having the worst day!
Flynn and Lily become romantically involved.
Lily opens up her own business.
But someone seems to be after Lily, sabotaging her new business...who is it and why?
At the beginning of the story it felt a bit run-of-the-mill. There were some clichés of the genre and it was a bit repetitive here and there, but I soon got absorbed in the story. It really picked up with a bit of action and mystery.
Lily and Flynn both have a rough background and past and are dealing with their own insecurities. They're both really sweet and likeable and find something special with each other and it's great to see that unfold. Almost all the characters are likeable and it has a great setting too. By the end you really feel a part of the Violet Falls community. Hartley's Grange is an easy to read, charming romance, and an enjoyable story.
*I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaways*
I really enjoyed this read, read it so quickly.I like how it followed on from previous book and included some references from it,all blended well. The farm life , the romance was nice to read, and how dreams can be achieved when life takes a different direction. Very relatable and made me feel I was part of the community and family whilst reading. I would definelty recommend, thank you
Thank you for my advance reading copy of this book. 3 1/2 stars - you know what you are getting from the cover - a rural romance with a hot male lead character. The book was everything I expected, light escapism, well written, it moved along quickly with a good story line.
A quick easy and enjoyable read. Lily Beckett with her life turned upside down in Melbourne returns home to the country town she grew up in, Victoria Falls.
Life in Victoria Falls starts to come together for Lily and even though she swears off men she of course meets someone and the sparks fly.
This is a story of Lily's return to her country town and of her following her dreams. There are some twists which make the story interesting.
I really enjoyed the story and thank GoodReads for the chance to review .
It is the story, Lilly Beckett, her return to Violet Falls after she loses her job and discovers her boyfriend having an affair with a model. She spends time with her sister and niece. Lily meets up again with Flynn Hartley who lives on Hartley Grange after it was left to him by his grandmother when she has accident with her car. Lily feels the attraction she had for Flynn still there from when she had a crush on at school. Lily decides to renovate the shop left to her by her grandfather and turn it into a store where she makes and sells dresses as she is a designer. Lily and Flynn fall in love but however there a few dramas along the way to them finding that they love each other. I thought this story was great it showed true emotions of the characters. And it is the follow-up story from Mac Kellan Run.
This romance is set in country Victoria. Hurley-Moore gives the reader a good sense of country living and country characters by using Australian colloquialisms and events. Whilst this story is enjoyable to read, the plot, although not entirely predictable, plays it safe. There are several episodes of banal dialogue between characters which repeats the plot and does not develop the story. However, there are some fun exchanges between Hartley and his best friend Mac. All the characters - bar one - are likeable.
Some people steer clear of 'chiclit' me I read anything and everything. If a book is well written and engaging the genre is irrelevant. That is the case with this book Hartley's Grange, it is engaging, fun and the pace is great. The characters are believable and likeable. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars was that I thought the sense of place was missing and there could have been a little more showing of where it was set.
I won this in a goodreads giveaway, thanks Nicole for an enjoyable read.
I don't read rural romances very often, but when I get a great book like this, it makes me wonder why not! Loved the h&h - Lily and Flynn captured me from the very first pages and it was classic romance all the way. From Lily's life falling apart, sending her running to the small town she used to call home, to Flynn recognising his failings and trying to find a way to make things work, to some suspense and someone conspiring to keep them apart. I was sucked in and thoroughly enjoyed reading every page.
This is an easy read Australian rural romance. It made me want to find out what was happening next and I completed it in the one sitting. It seemed to skip forward unexpectedly in a couple of cases or end abruptly in some chapters but it was an enjoyable read. I will be happily finding the other novel set in Violet falls and the newest set in White gum.
I received this as part of the Goodreads Giveaway.
