Divorced at 40, Chloe has few illusions left. Chloe knew a few things: 1 never going to be thin, 2 never going to be a famous singer, and 3 never going to be sexy enough to keep a man, a hot man. Chloe gets her life back. The first step was to file for divorce, next quit her job, then move across country, and finally spend quality time with her friends. Chloe never expects to sing in public for the first time in a very long time. She and her girlfriends have the time of their lives. So much fun in fact, Chloe meets Jasper Wade. He takes her on a whirlwind ride of unrestrained kisses, renewed hope, and a chance to discover who she is and what she could do now. This was a fun read that gave power back to the woman over 40 and looking to make that right move for her life and her circumstances.

Donna McDonald's Next Song I Sing is a wonderful story about three women who feel the need to start something new after they have been burned in love. This is a touching story, with Chloe feeling insecure because she’s not California thin, blonde or tanned. As Chloe starts flirting with Jasper, with her friends’ approval, she realizes life still has a lot to offer.

~Listened via Audible's Romance Package.

I am sorta loving this older couple romances. They are a bit quick to love and I kinda find that hard to believe being 41 myself. But I do remember when I met my husband 20+ yrs ago I just KNEW he was the one. From first date to marriage was less than 6 months, so..... I have to believe it to be true.

Ok onto the story. These characters will be fun to follow, much like the Never Too Late cast. I really can't wait for Max's story.

Vikki’s Musings

I read Her Best Mistake by Donna McDonald and loved it. When I discovered Next Song I Sing, I immediately downloaded it. It has taken me a while to get to it, but what a delightful read. As with the first book of Ms. McDonald’s, this one had me laughing out loud all through the book. Donna McDonald writes sparkling dialogue that brings her characters to life.

Chloe Zanders is a free woman. Her divorce papers are only a week old, and she has arrived in California to start her new life with her BFF’s from college. To celebrate her release from the cheating ex-husband, she begins her vacation at a 5 star hotel and spa, determined to find her easy-going fun self again.

Jasper Wade owns the Blue Skies and Spa Hotel. He has been divorced from his model wife for two years, but like the preverbal bad penny, Rayonna shows up once or twice a month. While no longer attracted to her, at least his sexual needs are somewhat taken care of, even if they are lack luster.

When Chloe and her friends take over the piano bar in the hotel, Jasper is blown away by the gorgeous, well-endowed woman with the fantastic set of pipes. He’s not alone, the bar patrons feel the same way. While Jasper is normally reserved and always conscious of his image, he cannot resist Chloe and pursues her in a way he has never done before.

Will Chloe give him a chance to prove he is sincere, and finds her more than generous curves, her amazing voice and quick-witted personality a huge turn on, or will she allow her beaten down self-esteem to keep him at arm’s length?

I love a good romantic comedy, and Next Song I Sing is a fantastic one. I fell in love with Chloe and Jasper’s characters from the first page and rooted for them to find their happy ending. The romance between the pair sizzles, and the love scenes are combustible. They are truly an explosive combination!

Chloe’s ex-husband did a real number on her self-esteem. She’s self-conscious of her size 14 body and her double D chest after five years of constant comments concerning her weight. This aspect to her character immediately gained my empathy. It’s not often where a heroine is less than perfect, and I found this great fun. Her ability to laugh at herself makes her a truly entertaining character.

Jasper is a bit straight-laced, but Chloe is so good for him. She helps him let go of his cheating ex-wife for good. Once he sees the delightful Chloe, he at last kicks her to the curb for good. I loved his journey of self-discovery, and his determination to capture the heart of the first woman to send his libido into over drive since his college days. But, please understand, he is also drawn to Chloe’s effervescent personality. The woman just glows.

The secondary characters, from Jasper’s brother Max, to Chloe’s BFFs, add greatly to this hugely entertaining book. Ms. McDonald sets up the future books in this series perfectly, and I can’t wait to read the next novels. I was a bit disappointed to find out that they are not out yet. Since she is doing a book tour for Next Song I Sing, I hope they are at last going to be released.

Now for the reasons I could not give this book 5 Gold Crowns. It needs professional editing badly. There are a lot of missing words, which had me re-reading to get the full meaning. Also, Ms. McDonald does a great deal of head-hopping. That kept me from getting as attached to the main characters in the beginning. While these issues were irritating, the story more than made up for these problems.

If you enjoy an entertaining romantic comedy, then you are going to love Next Song I Sing. This is an amusing tale of a woman starting life over at forty. At times, I laughed so hard, I had tears in my eyes. Bottom line, I loved this book, and will be looking for the next two stories in this great series. Hurry Donna, I want to read them. Happy reading!

Chloe catches her husband cheating so divorces him and moves to California where she has very good friends she has known since college. Even though Chloe is now 40 she is pushed by her friends to sing in the lounge of the hotel they are staying in. Since she used to sing when she was in college everybody thought it was a good idea for her to do it again. She didn't know that the owner of the hotel, Jasper, was watching her along with his brother and good friend. She has an outstanding voice that made Jasper offer her a singing job. Oh, and he just can't take his eyes off her either. Their mutual attraction gets complicated when both their ex's want them back.

The character development was very well done making the reader really know them. I especially loved the characters Jasper and Chloe. Chloe's strength to perform even though she was scared was inspiring. It was nice to see Chloe stand up for herself and face her ex. This was a really enjoyable story and I particularly liked that it was about a curvy woman and actually looked down on model thin women. It was also nice that it had 40ish characters with their life induced flaws instead of perfect little 20 somethings.

I highly recommend this book.

Ok, first off I have to say I know this lady, BUT, I've seen her writing grow like crazy, and this is my favorite of her contemporaries! The characters were awesome and real and so believable. I loved Chloe, maybe because of her size but definitely because of her attitude! Even though she had fears about what she was doing, she valued herself enough to move on. I love that!
The secondary characters were all likeable (or not!) and I found myself rooting for each of them, in different ways.
The tangled ending was fabulous, and this books sets up so many more romances that I can't wait to read them.
You ought to check this lady out!

This was a really good book! I loved that the character was not a stereotypical 40 year old divorcee. There was great character development, a wonderful story of love, and the pursuit of passion (not just romantic, sexual passion but passion towards things like singing) and the pursuit of dreams. Some great laugh out loud moments and lines. Very good! Our book club has it on the list of books to read.

Had to read this when I saw that book 2 is on its way! Chloe, Emma and Taylor are three friends who are all divorced and 40! Chloe is the last of the trio to go through a divorce leaving her cheating ex. She has moved from the east to the west coast and the three have decided that it’s time to take control of their lives. Next Song I Sing has Chloe revamping her life and deciding where she wants to go now. She used to sing in her college days and was quite good, Taylor and Emma her friends are working on getting her to sing again. Jasper Wade is the hotel manager where the three are letting loose. He is very attracted to Chloe however, he has an ex who, just won’t go away! Throw in Jaspers’ brother Max who has the hots for Taylor, Ryan who wants Emma back and we get a great book watching things come together for everyone.

Refreshing and Hot!
No one writes mature characters like Donna. They have real life experiences and believable baggage, but also hopes and dreams. The three friends are all 40, recently divorced, and hilarious after a Mai tai. They meet at a boutique spa hotel for a weekend and try to regain the confidence and fun they had in college, turning heads wherever they go. They take over the piano in the lounge and sing together again and Chloe’s mesmerizing voice gets a lot of attention. There is some serious steam between her and Jasper, though they have some outrageous interruptions. Well worth the read. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series, and I hope we see a lot more of Sam and Marla too.
Enjoy!

Good read, funny, sexy, and enjoyable.

A Book that gives hope to every unattached 40 and over woman who isn't the perfect size 6. Or, who thinks they isn't a man out there for her because she has moved into the double digits, (10 and up).

Chloe and Jasper both had some insecurities. It was fun to read as they worked their way into a relationship. I know there is a book about Max and Taylor. I just hope there are two more; one for Sam and Marla, and one for Emma and Ryan.

I've read the books in Donna McDonald's Never Too Late series, and the her Art of Love series. I can truthfully say that I have enjoyed every book of hers that I have read so far. I plan to keep working my way through the series.

When life gives Chloe a second chance…

A story of three friends who at the age of forty find themselves having to start over could really be a drag, but these women choose to lift each other up and focus on the future not the past. Their journey starts with Chloe, and Jasper, and what a crazy ride they have. Jasper is a bit of a stick in the mud, but when Chloe comes to his hotel he can’t resist all of her charms. Chloe has just divorced her husband of five years and is grieving that stability but also trying to revive her old nature that has been suppressed. This tale is heartwarming, hilarious, angsty to the max, and a joyful read for women of all ages.

Loved it!
You can always count on Ms. McDonald for a wonderful read, and this is a perfect example. Chloe returns to California after her divorce. She meets her two best friends from college at the Blue Skies Hotel and Spa for a celebration of her freedom from the serial cheater. You could say that Jasper Wade, the owner, is her “destiny” as his ex cheated on him. This is their story as they find not only themselves but also love.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book and purchased a copy for my collection.

WOW. I really enjoyed this book from Donna McDonald, her vibrant characters are just what was required for this story of moving on. The banter between the characters is just another plus. I can not wait for the next in the series. This story is well written and makes you want to find out what happens next to the many characters that are introduced in the story. I was taken into the story as only a good authors can.
I was gifted an ARC for an honest review.

This is Next Song I Sing, book 1 of the Next Time Around series written by Donna McDonald. I really love this book! We meet 3 lifelong friends all in different stages of their lives as they each try to pick up the pieces and start down the next path. First up is Chloe. A beautiful busty woman with the voice of an angel. It’s very entertaining to see how she starts her new life and just whom she allows to be involved in it! Can’t wait to read the next one!

Next Song I Sing by Donna McDonald

Songs can activate the cells in your heart and make us happy. What's your favorite song to sing?
Donna McDonald author of Next Song I Sing harmonizes the sounds of laughter, conversations with friends, love, discovery and recovery. When all of these elements are blended together you can expect a book that makes you appreciative. Ooh Baby, Ooh Baby!!

Next Song I Sing touches the funny bone and the sexy side of women everywhere. Ms. McDonald shatters the mirror and creates a positive self image by kicking to the curb the characterizations by societal standards of body images and beauty. Ms. McDonald's book Next Song I Sing cultivates and nurtures the psyche that speaks to women all over the planet. Embedded within the pages of Next Song I Sing are flirts and stimulates all five senses bringing about feelings of love and harmony. Ahh yes!

One of the best concepts I found charming about Next Song I Sing is the constant positive reinforcement about body image and age. I devoured Next Song I Sing and felt completely sated. Ms. Mc Donald's books tickles me while it reinforces how much fun and excitement mature women should be engaged in for a healthy lifestyle. Next Song I Sing gratifies the readers as the author portrays convincing characters, settings, emotions and rich dialogue that kept me reading from start to finish.

The setting: Western California at the luxurious resorts BlueSkies Spa and Resort in Laguna Niguel . At this beautiful resort in western California ladies are relaxing and being pampered with spa treatments and most don't eat and enjoy the delicacies of fine cuisine because in order to maintain the sizes 2 - 6.

Chloe Zanders is a voluptuous woman who visits her friends residing on the West Coast where the size of most women are painfully thin, young tanned and blonde. Chloe is newly divorced and has a set of vocal cords that can weaken the knees of both genders and excite the main brainstem of a man. :-) Chloe and her friends Emma and Taylor are songbirds and their renditions of Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Lisa Stansfield to name a few causes enthusiastic applause from the club audience and anyone passing by.
Chloe is gun-shy, logical and extraordinarily sexy which she discovers is true from the reactions she invokes from both sexes. She has a body that causes all males to swoon as the observe this curvaceous goddess lounging by the pool.

Taylor and Emma Chloe's best friends and college singing partners with big hearts, magnetic personalities are also easy on the eyes. The three women are very supportive and patient with one another. Emma and Taylor convinced Chloe to visit California to alter her outlook on life as she moves into a different phase after her divorce. Taylor and Emma maintain the California stereotypical look: tall and skinny. These enchanting songbirds are stunning and forty-somethings rediscovering what their bodies are made for. (hint, hint)

The owner of the hotel luxurious resorts BlueSkies Spa and Resort in Laguna Niguel along with a few other hotels. Jasper Wade is 45 years old, a total professional, sincere gentleman and totally fascinated by Chloe. Jasper's reserved, prim and proper personality is shaken as the lovely ladies enter his establishment. He too is divorced and has not been involved in a meaningful relationship for a couple of years. Jasper finds Chloe tempting, gorgeous and runs interference whenever other men notice her. His ex-wife Rayonna cheated on him. Jasper and Chloe's painful experience is the common denominator making both very anxiety laden.

Sam, Max unlike any platonic and sibling relationships are supportive and protective of Jasper's battered heart. Taylor and Max enjoy each other however, Max's flashy, star athlete and womanizer reputation precedes him hence making Taylor reluctant to get share more than a casual conversation, joke or singing.

Ms. McDonald takes the reader through the process of doubt and hesitation many women over 40 have before engaging in intimate relationship after the painful end of relationships. Her writing style and terrific sense of drama, suspense and action along with the lavish love scenes, ignite endorphins, testosterone and flying high libidos take the story on a real coaster ride.

The dating dance and lovemaking is slow and melodious which lulled me into a comfortable space. I conjured up the sensuous sound of rain hitting the window pane and thinking about the fantasies Ms McDonald has created for lovemaking. Ooh, baby, making me quiver, Ooh baby. Suddenly, I am hit between the eyes thanks to Ms.McDonald's cleverly throws in a zinger I did not see coming. It was pure perfection.

Ms. McDonald's secondary characters are very adorable and adds plenty of spice to help Chloe and Jasper shine like the brightest meteorites. Could drama and chaos possibly be the path to clarity of heart, mind and body bearing gifts too abundant to behold?

If you want to have a thrill and relish mature eroticism, friendships, love and faithfulness, this is a book for you. Yes, there is an HEA but the transportation there is a fiery one. This is the perfect vacation book and I truly wallowed in it!!

AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall 4 Narration 3 Story 5

Starting off with a bang, the characters and conflicts are set in rapid fire dialogue and interactions, establishing Chloe and her concerns within a few short minutes. Chloe is newly divorced after a horrible marriage: her ex-husband played on all of her insecurities and nearly wrecked her self-esteem and dreams. But, with the help of a supportive group of friends, she is starting to take back her own life, and working on herself.

I liked Chloe: we’ve all been in situations where we don’t make the healthiest choices for ourselves or our self-image. And it isn’t helped by the never-ending fascination and obsession with youth: from media to celebrity to fashion magazines. She was trying to make a marriage work, and giving more to the relationship than her husband deserved. Her willingness and determination to move past the hurt feelings and find a new life for herself.

When she heads out to California to hang out with her college friends and spend time at an upscale spa for the pampering, the connection between Chloe, Emma and Taylor is palpable: these are women who know each other’s secrets and dreams, and are determined that time won’t change the hopes or desires they held from their first meeting. While Chloe is more filled out and less California slim and tanned than her friends, they are all invested in the rebirth of the ‘new’ Chloe and are encouraging her blossoming in every way.

Jasper is the spa owner, and is instantly captivated by Chloe: her spirit, her joy and her voice. It doesn’t hurt that she is his fantasy woman come to life, with a body made for sin and a heart that he wants to cherish. Chloe is flirting with him, encouraged by her friends: but his reactions, his words, his touch, all speak to something much deeper. Hot and sexy, these two show the potential and possibilities of a second chance, and is a fun listen for romance fans who want something with future hope.

Narration for this book is provided by Anne Johnstonbrown, and as with earlier works that I have reviewed with her as narrator, her performance starts out quite rough, with character voices varying from little definition to over the top differences that can be quite jarring. Once she starts to relax into the story, however, the character portrayals start to acquire a subtle distinction that is far less distracting. The reliance on a pronunciation style that is over-reaching at best and pretentiously adopted at worst does seem to diminish as the story progresses, most accurately described as what one would ‘think’ a British accented narrator would use for a more American delivery style is the closest I can come. While I wasn’t in love with the narration, the quirkiness of the pronunciation and delivery did become less distracting as the story progressed and the overall effect was a competently performed listening experience.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title from the author via AudioBook Jukebox for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This book had a very bumpy start as I had difficulty being thrown into a very spirited & fast-paced conversation that sought to establish conflicts, complication & basic character traits in the span of about 5 pages. It made my head hurt and I started and stopped this one several times before pushing through. Once I did, my patience was rewarded!

Next Song I Sing features characters that I love and Chloe & Jasper are my second favorite couple (Regina & Ben from Dating Dr. Notorious will ALWAYS be my fav, I think). I am definitely on board to read book two as Taylor & Max seem interesting. I'm expecting Emma & Ryan to be about as boring as Lauren & Jim (Dating a Saint) but McDonald always carries these stories with updates from old favorites making every book worth the read.

I was disappointed by the choice of Marla for Sam. She seems crass with little in the way of redeeming qualities and I like Sam -- he deserves classy cheek, not what Marla is fanning up. Loud-talking, boob- squeezing, rude pissing contest bossiness just doesn't seem to jibe with a man who purchases a classic car & cherishes it for decades. I dunno, maybe she will grow on me and I do appreciate McDonald's commitment to diversity in body styles, personalities, and skin color. Guess I can let it go given everything I liked.

Overall, fun read & I loved the drama!

Well written and edited stand-alone story with no cliffhanger, although the seeds are sown for at least three other couple’s stories.

This is an entertaining story about a group of really likeable people, who all managed to find themselves divorced from really unlikeable people. Marriage to the wrong person really damages someone’s self-perceptions, and that’s probably the real subject of the book – overcoming that damage and moving on. Serious stuff wrapped in a funny, bright chick-lit package.

The three women featured in the story have been friends since college and have all gone on to successful, professional lives. They’re independent, sassy, funny and loyal to each other in the way that reminded of me of my own friends. Although this is chick-lit, and there is some over-the-top comedy, everything about the story seems like it could be true. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story with men like these – attractive inside and out, but slightly damaged in ways that are real. Sex is discussed more than described, but there is some steam.

I finished this story and immediately went in search of book two – only to be crushed to discover it’s not yet published.

Highly recommended to fans of grown-up chick lit.

Truly enjoyed this story of a 40 year old woman who divorces her cheating man and moves to California to be closer to her true friends, While on break from life she and her friends stay at a posh hotel. She is pushed by her friends to sing in the lounge there. Unbeknowest she has been watched by the hotel owner, his brother and friend. She is has a voice that reaches the heart of Jasper the owner. Chloe and Jasper both have ex's who want them back. I laughed out loud several times at the antics of all involved. I see here that there was to be a second and third book out. But since this was written in 2012 there is no other book to look forward to. Donna McDonald please finish this series with Chloe's friends.

So refreshing!
I'm playing catch-up with books I've had l around for simply ages but haven't gotten to until now.
This story really shows the different strengths in three ladies who no longer have men in their lives until one get-away weekend.....
The main story is about Chloe and Jasper's remarkable affair (and their horrid and undeserving exes) and their friends and family, but it is mainly about Chloe and Jasper.
It is a beautifully written love story about characters who aren't looking for love, but who also know what to do when they find it. So refreshing!
A definite recommend for this!

This as a delightful, fun read and I can't wait to see what happens with Max and Taylor; I'm also hoping that we will get to watch Sam and Marla along with Emma and Ryan! I have read all the stories to date in the Art of Love Series and can't wait for the next, and this series proves to be just as engaging. It is refreshing to see the heroine not be the typical ideal of woman that is expected, and it is also wonderful to see a mature woman that has had a bad relationship find real joy and happiness. Keep them coming Donna!

Fair

Chloe is just divorced and moves back to California. Jasper owns the hotel Chloe and her friends are staying in. One look at the busty brunette and Jasper is in love. But it'll take a lot to convince her because she's been hurt my her ex. I really believe this is a 2 and 1/2 stars. First, the cover model....Chloe is a size 14, the model is definitely nowhere near that. Also it has the pov's of too many people and it didn't separate the different characters pov. One paragraph would be one and the next another. Totally confusing.

This very enjoyable read is a story about Chloe, a curvy 40 year old divorcee who is making big changes in her life by moving back to California. She goes an a spa weekend with her two best friends and ends up catching the eye of the hotel owner, Jasper, and the adventures start there. This was funny, sexy, and Donna McDonald has a knack for writing about women of a certain age. Jasper, his brother, and his best friend were all super sexy men that I wouldn't mind taking a turn with! Some cliches were there and Chloe was so hard on herself sometimes, but I still loved the book :)
